Allianz Football League Division 1

Saturday 15th May 2021. Austin Stack Park, Tralee

Kerry 4-21 Galway 0-11

Score-by-score

Peter Keane’s Kerry came out with a point to prove after a disappointing end to their Munster championship campaign last year. One got the impression that winter in the Kingdom was spent dwelling on that dramatic exit. The Tribesmen struggled badly to keep pace with Kerry’s tempo, particularly in the first half. To be honest this game was done and dusted by the interval as Kerry led by ten points despite playing against the wind.

First Half

Paudie Clifford got the scoring underway with a point into the teeth of the wind. Damien Comer fisted over a quick leveller from the kick out. David Clifford showed that anything his brother could do he could replicate. Killian Spillane notched Kerry’s third point. A Matthew Tierney free came back off the post at the far end as Galway struggled to cope with Kerry’s pace and movement in the early stages. David Clifford kicked his second of the game and Kerry led by 0-4 v 0-1 inside the opening five minutes.

The pace of scoring slowed down after the frantic opening spell. Galway’s Damien Comer saw an effort from the left get pushed wide by the strong cross-field breeze. Kerry’s next score came from a well struck 45’ from David Moran which was dubiously awarded after Seán Mulkerrin knocked the ball off Seán O’Sheas hip. David Clifford drilled over his third from play on twelve minutes.

A sustained spell of Galway possession inside the Kerry half led to Dessie Connelly wining a free which Shane Walsh duly converted.

The game was even enough in this early stage, however, that all changed dramatically on the arrival of Kerry’s first goal. A quick free caught out the static Galway defence. Quick hands from Seán O’Shea and Killian Spillane set up an effort which David Clifford calmly palmed into the net. Killian Spillane fisted over a point after Bernard Power made a point blank save from Dara Moynihan to prevent a second Kerry goal in as many minutes.

Water break: Kerry 1-7 Galway 0-2

Paul Conroy sent over a point from distance for Galway after a patient build up. Paudie Clifford drilled home the second Kerry goal after a clever reverse pass from  Moynihan. Shane Walsh hit another poor wide for Pádraic Joyce’s side. Gavin White missed a superb chance for a third Kerry goal as the Kingdom were cutting the Galway defence open at will. Paudie Clifford’s initial effort was well saved and White slipped at the crucial moment when the goal appeared at his mercy.

Paul Conroy kicked his second and Galway’s fourth score. Joyce could see his side were struggling and he was quick to make changes on the sideline as Cooke and Heaney were replaced by Ronan Steed and Cathal Sweeney on 25 minutes. David Clifford was proving a handful for the Galway defence as he added another stylish point with his left foot from the right hand side.

Dara Moynihan set up another goal chance for Paudie Clifford. This time the Fossa man dragged his right footed effort across the face of goal and wide.

The Galway defence couldn’t lay a glove on their Kerry counterparts. Killian Spillane kicked over another score for Peter Keane’s men after a passing move which probed and tested for a gap before the space was created for Spillane.

Dessie Connelly brought the Galway return for the half to five and Matthew Tierney made it six from the opposite side in first half stoppage time. There was still time for Spillane to add his fourth before the whistle for the interval. A ten point lead at the break was a fair reflection of the one sided nature of the half.

Half-time: Kerry 2-10 Galway 0-6

The heavens opened in Tralee at the interval. Not that it bothered the home side. Kerry took up where they left off on the resumption. Sean O’Shea clipped over another free before David Clifford struck his second goal of the game. Damien Comer was repelled by debutant Fitzgibbon at the other end. The young shot stopper was a late replacement for Shane Ryan. The hat-trick was completed three minutes later with a soccer style goal. Clifford dummied his initial shot and a Cruyff style drag back left the defence bamboozled. Clifford then slotted the ball into an empty net.

Peter Keane then emptied his bench and replaced David Moran with debutant Paul O’Shea (Kilcummin), a cousin of the Clifford’s. Brian O’Beaglaoich was black carded for a foul on Shane Walsh on 45mins. Damien Comer clipped over a point for Galway. Finian O’Laoi came in for the injured Paul Conroy as the day went from bad to worse for the tribesmen.

David Clifford dispatched another free from the left to bring his personal tally to 3-06 prior to the whistle for the second water break. It was to be his final contribution of a superb personal display as Tommy Walsh replaced the younger Clifford.

Second water break: Kerry 4-13 Galway 0-7

Substitute Paul O’Shea kicked his first senior point for the Kingdom as the drubbing continued. Shane Walsh who had been unusually quiet kicked his first score from play with a booming left footed kick. Tommy Walsh kicked a point from a mark as the game ticked towards 60 minutes.

Sean Kelly pointed and brought Galway’s tally into double figures. A brace from Sean O’Shea and another from Paudie Clifford rounded out the scoring as Kerry opening their league campaign in stunning fashion. Bernard Power made another point blank save from Sean O’Shea to prevent a fifth Kerry goal. The resulting wind assisted 45’ was sent over by O’Shea. Robert Finnerty won a late free for Galway which he converted himself. The final whistle which sounded shortly after came as relief to the by now dispirited Tribesmen.

Full-time: Kerry 4-21 Galway 0-11

Summary: The third round of national league action was played out in difficult weather conditions as storm Ciara lashed the country with high winds and rain. It’s a credit to the ground staff all around the country that all the division one fixtures went ahead. The eight teams in action sever up some great football despite the conditions. All four games were close encounters with one draw and the other three games decided by a single point.

First up on Saturday night at headquarters was the meeting of Dublin and Monaghan. Banty McEneaney’s side will feel they left this one behind them. They were six points ahead as the clock ticked into the 70th minute. Kevin McMananmon’s goal cut the gap to three points. Sean Bolger picked off a brace of points before Davy Byrne levelled matters nine minutes into stoppage time.

All three Sunday games also went to the wire. In each of the three fixtures, the points were up for grabs as the games went in stoppage time.

In Omagh two late red cards were the game’s major talking point. Peter Harte walked for a second yellow on 58 minutes. Ten minutes later, while Tyrone were two-point ahead, Kerry’s David Clifford also got his marching orders for a second yellow. Clifford appeared to be dragged to the ground in a headlock by Ben O’Connell. Both players were booked. Despite Kerry’s protests, it was now 14 aside for the last few minutes. Tyrone held out despite for a one-point win.

In Letterkenny, the home side lead by 7 points early in the second half after Ciaran Thompson’s goal put them 2-05 v 0-04 ahead. However, Donegal would only score two more points. Goals from full-backs Johnny Heaney and Sean Kelly turned the game in Galway’s favour. Michael Murphy had a chance to snatch a draw at the death for Donegal, however, his late free into the wind drifted wide.

Finally, in Navan, two second-half goals looked like giving the home side their first points of the campaign. But not for the first time Kevin McLoughlin came to Mayo’s rescue. He hit 1-2 off the bench, with his injury-time goal proving decisive.

Kerry 1-15 Galway 2-11

For the second week running the Kingdom got out of jail late on. Paul Geaney’s goal levelled the contest as the game ticked into injury time. An even later David Clifford effort hit the post and substitute Killian Spillane reacted quickest to pop over the rebound to give Kerry the win by a single point.

For the second week running the time-keeping was a major talking point. The Galway management fumed on the sidelines as Cillian McDaid had spent 12 minutes in the sin-bin. Kerry’s winning point came while Galway should have been returned to the full compliment.

David Clifford got the scoring underway with an early point. James O’Donoghue doubled the home sides lead before Damien Comer hit Galway’s first point. Kerry settled into the game quicker and further points from Michael Burns and a Clifford free stretched the home sides lead to 0-4 v 0-1.

Paul Geaney and Clifford added to Kerry’s tally and Walsh picked off another point for the Tribesmen. John Heaney’s goal after 18 minutes brought Padraic Joyce’s side back to within a point.

James O’Donoughe responded with a point for Kerry, but points from Damien Comer and Michael Daly brought Galway level at 0-8 v 1-5. Further points from Stephen O’Brien and Geaney sent Peter Keane’s men into the interval with a two-point lead.

Second-half

Michael Burns and Eamon Brannigan swapped points on resumption. The sides again traded scores with points from two Walsh’s – Shane and Tommy – before  David Clifford extended the home sides lead back out to three points at 0-13 v 1-07.

Shane Walsh and Brannigan fired over to reduce the gap and then Walsh blasted past Shane Ryan in the Kerry net just before the hour mark. This saw Galway hit the front for the first time in the match. Walsh added another point to his tally as Galway went three ahead as the game ticked final ten minutes.

Cillian McDaid’s black card handed the Kingdom a numerical advantage for the closing stages in Tralee. Geaney’s late goal and Spillane’s even later point snatched the win for a scarcely deserving Kerry side.

Both sides head north next weekend as Galway travel to Ballybofey to face Donegal and Kerry have a trip to Omagh to meet Tyrone.

Kerry v Galway
Allianz Football League, Division 1
Austin stack Park, 7pm Saturday 1st February 2020.

Kerry came away from Croke Park last Saturday evening with a single league point to show for their efforts. David Clifford’s late-late equalising free securing a 1-19 apiece draw with the Dubs.

Peter Keane’s side went blow for blow with the All-Ireland champions and showed why they will be a force to be reckoned with at the business end of both league and championship this season. Clifford, who only turned 21 during the week, scored a superb solo first-half goal.

In a replica of the drawn All-Ireland final last year, Kerry could have won as they led by 3 points with 65 minutes gone. A couple of Ciaran Kilkenny scores and a Dean Rock free looked to have given Dublin the win. However, Clifford was nerveless as he drove over the free a full ten minutes into stoppage time.

Galway’s new approach under the new management trio of Padráic Joyce, John Divily and John Concannon was tested by Banty McEnany’s Monaghan on Sunday afternoon. Galway shaded this tight encounter by the bare minimum.

Galway’s attacking style was very direct against Monaghan. The quick ball into their forwards was in direct contrast to the often slow laborious build-ups witnessed by Galway fans last season under the previous regime. However, there were signs that Galway will be susceptible to conceding scores just as easily as getting them at the other end. Monaghan’s attack troubled the Galway rearguard when they went direct up the middle of the park. There was uncertainty in the tribesmen’s defensive system. Galway’s midfield faded in the third quarter of the game. During this stage, Monaghan reeled off five points on the spin.

These two sides met in Tuam Stadium last February in round four of  league. On that occasion, the visitors won by a single point. Galway 1-10 Kerry 0-14.

Peter Keane has made three changes from last weeks side. There are new faces in the 7,8 & 9 shirts for their Saturday evening clash with Galway. Eamon Brannigan and Damien Comer both start. Michael Boyle, Adrian Varley & Paul Conroy are the players to make way.

Galway make the trip to Kerry on Saturday night with a 7pm in Tralee knowing a win will put them in an excellent position following their opening round win over Monaghan. We have a preview, team news and betting information. We will also be updating on the score of the game.

Preview

Padraig Joyce will be delighted his side got the win over Monaghan at Pearse Stadium. There is always room for improvement but he will be delighted to get the two points on the board. Speaking to RTE Sport he said, “It was very important to get the win with a couple of tough away matches coming up,”. He continued, “It’s a start, it’s a base, it’s the end of January, nothing is won until later in the year, but it’s great to get two points early in this tough league.”

Galway were full value for their win in my opinion. They had some impressive performances from Shane Walsh, Rob Finnerty and Finian O’Laoi. Joyce will be hoping the trio can put in a similar performance against Kerry in Tralee.

Kerry will be delighted with their performance over Dublin. They are not far away at all from them. What really impressed me was the fight they showed not to give up to the final whistle. Peter Keane was also impressed with the performance, he said after the game, “Had we won I wouldn’t have been jumping out of my skin in here and had we lost I wouldn’t have been crying,”. David Clifford, James O’Donoghue and Paul Murphy all impressed in that game for me and these will likely be key to Kerry getting a win here to.

Team News

Teams are not yet named. However, here are the teams from their last round of games.

Kerry: Shane Ryan; Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley, Brian O Beaglaoich; Paul Murphy ,Shane Enright, Gavin Crowley, Adrian Spillane, Sean O’Shea ; Gavin O’Brien , Paul Geaney  Stephen O’Brien ; James O’Donoghue , David Clifford , Tommy Walsh.

Galway: Connor Gleeson; Johnny Heaney, Seán Mulkerrin, Johnny Duane; Garry O’Donnell, John Daly, Cillian McDaid; Paul Conroy, Cein D’Arcy Michael Boyle, Finian Ó Laoí ,Michael Daly; Adrian Varley , Shane Walsh  Robert Finnerty

Betting

Kerry are favourites at odds of 4/11. Galway are outsiders at 10/3. I fancy Kerry to come out on top by 4 or 5 points here.

Mayo will meet Dublin on Saturday evening at 7pm in MacHale Park, Castlebar in Round 2 of the Allianz Football League. We have a preview, team news and match betting ahead of the game. We will also be providing live scores of the game.

Preview

Both sides come into the game on the back of drawn games in their opening fixtures. James Horan’s side needed a stoppage time goal from James Durcan to come away from Donegal with a draw. Dessie Farrell’s first game in the National League as Dublin boss ended in a 1-19 to 1-19 draw with old foes Kerry. Both sides will be very eager to get maximum points here.

James Horan will likely look to players Colm Boyle, Tom Parsons and Diarmuid O’Connor for leadership once more. Dessie Farrell will look to Ciaran Kilkenny, Dean Rock and Brian Fenton who was superb against Kerry landing four points from play.

Team News

Teams have yet to be revealed. However these were the teams that played last weekend first round games for the respective teams.

Joyce has yet to show his full hand as Galway are still short some of their club contingent. Corofin captured their third All-Ireland Club crown on the trot last weekend. While Oughterard added the Intermediate All-Ireland for the county with a win over Monaghan’s Maghercloone in the curtain-raiser to Dublin v Kerry at headquarters yesterday evening.

Pre-season has shown promise for Galway new approach as the FBD title was secured with a win over Roscommon. But that would count for little, as Monaghan in top-flight action would be a more daunting proposition. Séamus ‘Banty’ McEnaney was back at the helm for the Farney men as they came in search of another win at Pearse Stadium. Two years ago Monaghan cruised to an easy win in a Super 8 game at the Salthill venue.

The home side started well with two early points from a Shane Walsh free and a cleverly dummied point from the inventive Finian Ó Laoí. The later coming into the starting side as a late change for Tomás Flynn.

Monaghan responded in-kind with two points from Conor McManus. McManus was also a late change to the Monaghan line-up. Not originally listed to start the veteran forward came into the side in a late reshuffle for full-back Drew Wylie. Needless to say, McManus did his work at the other end of the field as Ryan Wylie, Dessie Ward and Dermot Malone all dropped back a line.

Crucial Goal

A further two-point exchange between the sides saw the score tied at 0-4 apiece before Robert Finnerty struck for the games only goal. Shane Walsh showed great vision to pick out Michael Boyle, who in turn fed the goal scorer. Finnerty, the son of former Mayo stalwart Anthony, showed great composure to round Rory Beggan in the Farey goal before slotting the ball into the empty net.

Monaghan reduced the gap to a single point with scores from Kieran Hughes and Conor McCarthy, but the home side pushed on with a trio of unanswered points from Adrian Varley and Shane Walsh (0-2).

The drama continued unabated during this spell as there were goal chances at either end. Firstly a stray fisted back pass from Ryan McAnespie caught Beggan flat-footed and the keeper did well to prevent it from ending up in the net. Soon after at the other end, Monaghan had a glorious chance to square things up when Dessie Ward was fouled. However, Conor Gleeson in the Galway goal sprung to his right to parry away Connor McManus’s spot-kick. Gleeson, a former Galway United goalkeeper, is quickly gaining a reputation as a fine shot-stopper. He also saved two spot-kicks in Galway’s recent FBD final shoot-out win over Roscommon.

Monaghan Kepper’ Rory Beggan drove over a 45’ and Tuam Stars wing-back Gary O’Donnell shot over at the other end to a goal separating the sides tied at the interval. Galway 1-08 v Monaghan 0-8.

Second-half

Galway outscored Monaghan 3 points to 1 after the restart to push the gap out to five points. Firstly Finnerty blazed over the bar when he could have had a second goal, before McManus responded for the Farney men. Paul Conroy and Walsh then added two more Galway scores.

At this stage it looked like the home side would pull away for a comfortable win. However, Padraic Joyce’s side then showed the failings of old. They took their foot off the gas and went the next twenty minutes without a score. Monaghan made hay during this spell. The tactic of Rory Beggan carrying the ball upfield unmolested reaped dividends. The Monaghan keeper’s forays up past his own 45’ created space for others. Five unanswered points from Kieran Hughes, McManus, McCarron and substitutes Chris McGuinness & Aaron Mulligan level up the game at 1-11 v 0-14 as the game entered the last ten minutes of regulation time.

A Shane Walsh free, after he had been cynically taken down, edged Galway back in front. Conor McManus then tied the game up again. A move that started with a goal-line clearance from Seán Mullkerrin led to a fisted point for Damien Comer. Matthias Barrett then added another point from the kick-out. Conor McManus cut the gap to the minimum with a sublime free-kick from the lefthand sideline.

Galway hung-on during five additional minutes at the end as the Farney men pressed for a draw. They survived a hop-ball inside their 22’ and an even later scare when they won a free out at the death.
