The Finn Valley AC man won his heat in a time of 1:46.96 to automatically qualify for the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Commenting after his win, English said:

“The main job was to secure qualification for the semis and I am really looking forward to Wednesday. I treat every race like my final race. Today I was a bit boxed in earlier in the race so I was happy to then get out and qualify.”

Cian McPhilipps disappointed in his heat of the same event. A fourth-place finisher from the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo last year, the UCD athlete finished in seventh in 1:46.84.

Neville into 100m semi-finals

Ciara Neville ran 11.29 when finishing in fifth place in heat 1 of the women’s 100m, good enough to see the 26-year-old from Limerick progress to the semi-finals this evening. Neville will run from lane 9 in the second of three semi-finals, with her race off at 8.18pm.

Lauren Roy, unfortunately, did not progress in the same event. Competing in the third heat, the Fast Twitch AC sprinter clocked 11.32 seconds in finishing sixth of eight competitors.

Jack Raftery of Donore Harriers finished second in Heat 2 Round 1 of the men’s 400m. Crossing the line in a time of 45.81 seconds, the DCU Masters student did enough to qualify for Tuesday’s semi-finals which will begin at 9pm.

Six members of the Irish team will be in action in the morning session which gets underway at the Alexander Stadium at 10.30am.

Both Cian McPhillips and Mark English will be quickly into action in the men’s 800m heats which begin at 10.45am.

Ciara Neville and Lauren Roy will get their women’s 100m campaigns underway shortly afterwards when they contest the heats at 11.25am.

Jack Raftery runs in round one of the men’s 400m at 11.55am, before Eric Favors will become Ireland’s first field competitor in action when qualification begins at 12.40pm for the men’s shot put.

There will be much Irish interest in the Monday evening session with at least six Irish athletes in action, but potentially up to nine, depending on results in the morning session.

Nicola Tuthill will begin her attempt to qualify for the Women’s Hammer Throw Final. There will be two qualifying groups, A and B, with the former underway at 7.10pm and the latter at 8.38pm.

Limerick’s Sarah Lavin competes in round one of the women’s 100m hurdles at 7.35pm.

Round one of the women’s 3,000m steeplechase gets underway at 9pm where Abbie Sheridan will make her European debut.

Prior to that, three Irish men will compete in the 5,000m final at 8.40pm – Darragh McElhinney, Nick Griggs and Brian Fay.

Depending on results in the morning session, Ciara Neville and Lauren Roy may compete in the Women’s 100m semi-finals at 8.10pm, with the final of that event at 9.50pm, while Eric Favors could have a slot in the Men’s Shot Put Final at 8.33pm.

The Dubliner set a championship record time of 22.80 seconds in winning her first senior outdoor national 200m title at the 123.ie National Senior Track and Field Championships.

Amy Foster of Fast Twitch was second in a time of 23.49 seconds, with Lorena Harrison from Ratoath AC third in 24.61 seconds.

It’s mission accomplished for Rhasidat Adeleke who blasts to victory at the Irish nationals over 200m in 22.80 (-1.1m/s), securing the qualification standard (22.85) for next month’s Europeans.

Newport AC’s Sharlene Mawdsley pulled up injured during the 200m final.

The ‘A’ standard for next month’s European Championships in Birmingham is 22.85 seconds.

Speaking to Athletics Ireland after the race, Adeleke paid tribute to the home crowd whose support helped inspire her performance.

“It’s been a rough year,” she admitted. “I didn’t really have any expectations coming in here. I just wanted to come out in front of a home crowd and show up, and whatever happened, happened.

“I wouldn’t be able to do it without this crowd here, honestly. I knew that if I can do it anywhere, it’s at home, so thank you to everyone who supported me. So many sent me such nice messages. Sometimes you’re in a bad place and you think the worst of yourself, and then you see the amount of people showing you love and support. It just lifts my spirits.”

 Adeleke aims for European qualification

With the Birmingham 2026 European Championships next month athletes continue their pursuit of European qualification.

Among the most notable will be Tallaght AC’s Rhasidat Adeleke who will bid for the qualification standard in the 200m. She will face stiff competition in the event this weekend with Lauren Roy (Fast Twitch AC), the fastest Irish female over the distance this season with 22.83 seconds, and Newport AC’s Sharlene Mawdsley, who is also entered in the 400m event.

Sarah Lavin goes for 11th title

A potential showdown between Mark English (Finn Valley AC) and Cian McPhillips (UCD AC) in the men’s 800m could be among the most anticipated events on the two-day schedule.

Clonliffe Harriers’ Cathal Doyle aims to secure a fifth consecutive outdoor 1500m title, though he will face stiff competition from the likes of Nick Griggs (CNDR Track) and Andrew Coscoran (Star of the Sea AC).

UCD AC’s Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh AC) hold entries in the 800m and 1500m, while Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) will bid for an 11th outdoor 100m hurdles crown.

Defending 100m champion Bori Akinola (UCD AC) hopes to successfully defend his 100m title, but will face the in-form Seán Aigboboh (Tallaght AC) and Benjamin Richardson (Waterford AC) who also hold entries for the 200m. Richardson arrives at the Nationals with the fastest times over 100m and 200m this season, having clocked 10.06 seconds and 20.25 seconds respectively.

Tuthill one of field event stars

The field events will feature many of Ireland’s leading international athletes. Twenty-two year-old Olympian Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) is among the headline entries and has established herself as one of the country’s most consistent performers.

She has moved within touching distance of Eileen O’Keeffe’s national hammer record of 73.21m after improving her personal best to 72.73m this season. She will arrive at Morton Stadium seeking a fifth outdoor title.

The 18-year-old ran an exceptional 11.34 in the final to take home gold, finishing ahead of Serbia’s Ivana Ilic and Great Britain’s Joy Eze, who ran 11.42 and 11.44 respectively.

It is the youngster’s first European gold medal at that level in the 100m event but she has had prior success.

The Tallaght AC athlete became the senior national champion in the event earlier this year and is currently the holder of the Irish U20 record for the women’s 100m.

Adeleke impressed on Thursday, making her way to the final via two strong runs, taking the top spot in her heat with a time of 11.37.

The time made her the fastest qualifier in all six heats and foreshadowed the success that was to come for the athlete.

The sprinter later went second-fast overall in the semi-final stage and first in her semi with 11.38.

The Dubliner took the lead early on in the final and never let it go in a strong final run as she delivered on the promise of Thursday.

She joins Gina Akpe-Moses on the list of Irish women to win gold representing the country in the women’s 100m event at the European U20 Championships.

Akpe-Moses was the champion in the event in 2017, where she crossed the line ahead of everyone else in a time of 11.71 in Grosseto.

Adeleke returned to action soon after with another impressive run, this time in the 200m heats.

The sprinter ran her heat in 23.20, claiming the best time of anyone in the heats by .23 and will progress to the semi-finals tomorrow.

If successful, a spot in another final this weekend awaits the exciting Irish talent on Sunday at 3:55 pm.

The decision was taken today by the Paris 2020 Local Organising Committee (LOC) and Fédération Française d’Athlétisme (FFA) at an extraordinary LOC Executive Committee meeting on Thursday.

The decision was driven by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the associated risks linked to the current situation, which are far from being under control, as well as the existing ban on mass gatherings in France.

Commenting on the cancellation of the European Athletics Championships, European Athletics Interim President, Dobromir Karamarinov said:

“It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of the Paris 2020 European Athletics Championships. We had hoped in these troubled times to offer European athletes a major event to aim for at the end of this summer. Unfortunately, today we were informed by the LOC and French athletics federation that, after discussions with the relevant French national and local public health and safety authorities, they were no longer able to proceed with delivering the championships this August and were forced to cancel the event.

“Whilst we regret announcing the cancellation of our European Athletics Championships, it is worth reiterating that in these unprecedented times the health and safety of all athletics’ stakeholders including athletes, fans, officials, partners and everyone connected with the sport is paramount. We will always do what is best for the members of our athletics family and the wider public.”

The European Athletics Council will discuss this issue, together with other changes to the global athletics calendar that have been forced upon the sport due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at their next meeting which is scheduled to take place via video conference on 7-8 May.

All the ticket holders for Paris 2020 as well as those signed up for the 10km Festival Athlé will receive a full refund in line with a procedure that will be communicated in due course on the official website www.athle2020.paris.
