End of an Era for Portumna as Senior Status Slips Away

Portumna’s incredible 33-year stay at the top table of Galway hurling has come to an end.
A 0-24 to 2-14 defeat to Ballinderreen at Kenny Park seals their relegation to the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship for 2026.

It is a landmark moment for one of Galway’s most storied clubs. Portumna have been ever-present
in the senior ranks since winning the Intermediate county title in 1992. Over the following two decades, they became one of the most dominant club sides in Ireland, capturing
six Galway SHC titles (2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013) and an
extraordinary four All-Ireland Club SHC crowns (2006, 2008, 2009, 2014).

Central to that golden era were the legendary Canning brothers – Ollie, Joe, Tony, and Ivan – who became synonymous with Portumna’s rise to national prominence. Joe Canning, widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers of all time,
was the talisman during their peak years, producing some of the most memorable club final performances ever seen
in Croke Park.

But today’s result represents a changing of the guard. While Portumna have continued to field competitive teams in
recent years, they have struggled to replicate the dominance of their late-2000s heyday. Ballinderreen’s sharp
shooting in Athenry proved too much despite Portumna’s goals keeping them in the contest until the closing stages.

For a generation of hurling fans, Portumna’s fall is a reminder of how quickly fortunes can turn at club level.

Their drop to Premier Intermediate brings the curtain down on one of the most successful chapters in Galway club hurling history – but also offers the chance for a rebuild and potential resurgence.

Weekend Club GAA Preview – Hurling & Football

Live club GAA scores click here

Friday – Cork & Dublin Set the Tone

The weekend begins under lights in Cork where Blackrock meet St Finbarr’s (19:30) in a classic city hurling battle. Across the country in Dublin, Naomh Barróg face Craobh Chiaráin (18:45) before Kilmacud Crokes take on St Vincent’s (20:30) — Crokes are fancied, but Vincent’s have the pedigree to spring a surprise.

Saturday – Hurling Heavyweights

In Cork, Midleton are tipped to account for Newcestown (17:15), Kanturk and Douglas (18:30) looks tight, and Sarsfields are narrow favourites against Erin’s Own (19:00).
Dublin has key fixtures in St Brigid’s vs Cuala (15:30) and Lucan Sarsfields vs St Jude’s (17:30), while Na Fianna and Ballyboden (17:30) is the capital’s headline hurling clash.
In Kilkenny, O’Loughlin Gaels vs Dicksboro (13:30) will draw a crowd, while Ballyhale Shamrocks are expected to overpower Lisdowney (18:00).
Waterford stages Abbeyside vs Fourmilewater (19:00) with the hosts edging favouritism, and Dungarvan vs Clonea (17:30) should go with form.

Saturday – Football Drama

Kerry opens its football weekend with Kerins O’Rahillys vs Gneeveguilla, followed by Glenbeigh-Glencar vs Beaufort and evening ties for John Mitchels and Fossa — all with home advantage.
In Meath, Wolfe Tones vs Donaghmore/Ashbourne and Na Fianna vs Simonstown are both likely to be closely fought, though Skryne and St Colmcilles are well-backed in their games.
Donegal sees Kilcar (1/6) heavily favoured against Downings, but Glenfin vs St Michael’s is more of a coin toss.
In Derry, Glen (1/12) should coast past Banagher, with Newbridge and Bellaghy also well-backed.
Armagh has Mullaghbawn, Clann Éireann and Armagh Harps all strong favourites in their evening throw-ins.
In Clare, St Breckans vs St Joseph’s Milltown is near even money, while Doonbeg and Lissycasey are expected to shade their ties.
Antrim features Aldergrove, Creggan and Cargin all odds-on for wins.
Galway has Moycullen (1/10) as one of the weekend’s bankers, while Tuam Stars vs Dunmore McHales could go either way.

Sunday – Closing Statements

Sunday’s hurling highlight is in Cork where Newtownshandrum face Charleville (16:00) and Glen Rovers meet Father O’Neill’s (19:00). In Kilkenny, Glenmore vs Bennettsbridge (13:30) should be a tight affair.
Football takes centre stage in Kerry, Meath, Galway, Clare, Antrim, Armagh, Derry, and Donegal with several sides looking to secure knockout places — the likes of Dingle, Ratoath, Salthill-Knocknacarra and Glen will be expected to deliver.

Verdict

On paper, Glen, Moycullen, Ballyhale Shamrocks, Kilcar, Cargin and Clann Éireann look the safest weekend bets. But the history of these championships shows that counties like Clare, Kerry, and Kilkenny thrive on underdog shocks — and with local bragging rights on the line, the odds may yet be turned upside down.

St Thomas’ maintained their unbeaten record in Galway finals as they won their fifth title since 2012. On the other hand, Turloughmore were in the final were the first time in thirty years. Furthermore, they showed exactly why they deserved to be in the showdown as they pushed St. Thomas’ to the very end. However, the St. Thomas’ players could call on their experience of being in close finals and managed to find a way to win. They are the first team to get a third Galway SHC in a row since Portumna in 2007, ’08, and ’09.

It was a whirlwind start to the game. Firstly, Sean Linnane opened the scoring for Turloughmore just 18 seconds in. Secondly, the game’s only goal came just a few seconds later. Conor Cooney collected a loose ball 20 metres out and found the net for the champions.

At the other end of the pitch, St. Thomas’ defence stood strong thanks to Fintan Burke’s continued control of the full-back position. This left Turloughmore shooting from distance. However, former Galway captain Fergal Moore showed this was no problem with his two early scores.

Both sides continued to be accurate. In fact, it was point for point for much of the first-half. But, Turloughmore were perhaps the more impressive as they played into a strong wind. With the scores tied 1-6 to 0-9 at the break, Turloughmore would have been very happy with that return.

But, the loss of captain Daithi Burke before the interval was a major blow to Turloughmore. On 39 minutes, St. Thomas’ took the front thanks to scores from Gary Burke and Oisin Flannery. Turloughmore weren’t going away though. Specifically, as the game entered the final 10 minutes, a disputed score by Sean Loftus drew the sides level at 1-11 to 0-14.

Then, Linnane hit his fourth point of the game to put Turloughmore in front. With 6 minutes left, St. Thomas’ remained composed. The return of Burke for Turloughmore couldn’t prevent the champions from scoring three in a row to retain the title.

As a result, it finished 1-14 to 0-15 as St. Thomas’ claimed their third Galway SHC in a row.

St Thomas’: Gerald Kelly; Cian Mahony, Fintan Burke (0-01, 0-01f), Sean Skehill; John Headd, Shane Cooney, David Sherry; David Burke, James Regan (0-01); Evan Duggan, Conor Cooney (1-06, 0-06f), Darragh Burke (0-01); Eanna Burke (0-01), Oisín Flannery (0-03), Bernard Burke.

Subs: Brendan Farrell (0-01) for Duggan (51 mins).

Turloughmore: Mark Fahy; Mikey Morris, Ronan Burke, Mark Murphy; Daniel Loftus, Jamie Holland, Kevin Hussey; Fergal Moore (0-02), Daithí Burke; Conor Walsh (0-04, 0-04f), Sean Loftus (0-01), Matthew Keating (0-02); Barry Callanan (0-01), Gary Burke (0-01), Sean Linnane (0-04).

Subs: Niall Connolly for D Burke (30 mins), Barry McDonagh for Keating (45), Daithí Burke for Callanan (58), Ronan Badger for G Burke (58).

St. Thomas’ return to the Galway Hurling final for the fourth time in five years. In each of their last three times here, they have emerged victorious. In contrast, Turloughmore haven’t won the Championship since 1985. Both sides overcame tough semi-final contests to earn a place in this year’s showdown.

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORE COMMENTARY St. Thomas’ vs Turloughmore

Firstly, Turloughmore had just a goal to spare against Loughrea in their semi-final on the 20th of September. Being well-organised proved to be their biggest asset. Francis Forde and Joe Hession’s side began the game strongly.

After Barry Callanan found the net in the 22nd minute, Turloughmore were 1-05 to 0-05 to the good. But, this was the encouragement Loughrea needed as they went on a terrific spell of their own. Still, Gary Burke netted for Turloughmore deep in injury time to make it 2-06 to 0-11 at the interval.

Then, Turloughmore began the second-half where they left off. Four points in a row gave them a commanding position. But, Loughrea battled until the end. An injury time goal meant it was a nervy finish. However, Turloughmore held on. It finished 2-17 to 1-17 as Turloughmore reach their first Galway SHC final since 1990.

Secondly, St. Thomas’ kept their quest for three-in-a-row alive. In a tightly contested game with Cappataggle, they won by a single point. The games only goal came midway through the first half with the score at three points each. Eanna Burke collected the sliotar out wide before cutting in and finding the bottom right corner. However, Cappataggle retaliated and carried a 0-09 to 1-04 lead in at half-time.

Even when the champions got on top in the second half, Cappataggle didn’t relent. With seven minutes left the difference was one in the champions’ favour. Then Conor Cooney scored twice to open a cushion that Cappataggle just fell short of reeling in. In the end, Cappataggle fell at the semi-final hurdle for the fourth consecutive year. It finished 1-15 to 0-17.

St. Thomas’ experience in the final has them 10/11 favourites with Paddy Power. But, Turloughmore’s drive and form is clearly evident. Therefore, they’re not far behind at 11/10. Meanwhile, a draw is 8/1. Galwaygaa.ie are live streaming the game.

Turloughmore have had an extra week to prepare for the showdown and will be bursting to get going. On the other hand, St. Thomas’ know how to get over the line and this experience could be crucial when the game is in the melting pot.

It’s Castletown Geoghegan vs Clonkill in the Westmeath Senior Hurling Final this Sunday. In a repeat of last year’s final, Clonkill are aiming to retain the title. Whereas, Castletown are out to right a wrong from last year.

Castletown were relatively comfortable winners in their semi-final outing against Castlepollard. In a 4-16 to 3-10 win, manager Pat O’Brien still sees room for improvement. Two of Castlepollard’s goals came in injury time when Castletown defenders were switched off. O’Brien was critical of this saying “we need to be more ruthless”.

However, he was delighted that his side played positively and were strong at the other end of the pitch. Goals win games and O’Brien knows this ahead of the final: “Hopefully, if the opportunities present themselves in the final, we’ll be able to take them”.

On the other hand, Clonkill had to fight hard to win a place in the final. This year, Pat O’Toole is the man tasked with guiding Clonkill to three-in-a-row. Speaking after the semi-final, O’Toole was appreciative of the battle with Lough Lene Gaels’. “It was anyone’s game with time almost up. We were just lucky we got a couple of scores to pull away”.

With the semi-final conquered, O’Toole is ready for the challenge Castletown Geoghegan will bring in the final: “Castletown-Geoghegan are a very good hurling team. They’ll take beating. There’s no doubt about that. They’ll be mad gunning to beat us now, but we’ll try and give them a good rattle”.

Clonkill had just a goal to spare in the final last year. Castletown-Geoghegan know they could have won that game and will be out to prove it this time around. Both managers are aware of what it will take to win. Yet, it will take a fine performance to claim this Hurling Championship.

Castletown Geoghegan are slightly preferred by Paddy Power at 5/6. But, at 6/5 Clonkill are no underdogs. A draw is 8/1 and is far from unlikely. Iarmhí TV are showing the game live.

Westmeath Hurling Final: Castletown Geoghegan vs Clonkill, Sunday 4th October, 4pm (TEG Cusack Park).

For the first time since 2017, it’s Longford Slashers vs Wolfe Tones in the Longford Hurling Championship Final. Last year, Longford Slashers had a chance to win their first Championship since 2001. However, they came out second best against Clonguish Gaels. On the other hand, Wolfe Tones were absent from the final last year after previously winning six-in-a-row. Now, they have a chance to reclaim the title.

Both of 2020’s finalists defeated holders Clonguish in the group stage. Firstly, Wolfe Tones were 1-15 to 1-10 winners. Secondly, Longford Slashers exacted revenge for last year’s final defeat. They won by 1-11 to 0-6.

Longford Slashers knocked Wolfe Tones out of the Championship last year. This is something the latter will be aware of prior to this year’s showdown. Specifically, Slashers overturned a three-point deficit at half-time to secure a comeback victory. With this in mind, Tones will have some added motivation for the final.

When these sides met in the final in 2017, there was just a point between them in Wolfe Tones’ favour. Now, it will likely be just as close as Longford Slashers are ready to end their nineteen-year drought. However, this Wolfe Tones side are experienced finalists and when the game reaches boiling point, experience will be key.

Longford TV are showing the game live so fans won’t miss any of the excitement.

Longford Hurling Final: Longford Slashers vs Wolfe Tones, Sunday 4th October, 4pm (Glennon Brothers Pearse Park).

For the fifth year in a row, the Leitrim hurling final will be won by either Carrick Hurling or Cluainin Iomaint. Only Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s interrupted the trend by winning in 2015.

Recently, it’s always been Carrick Hurling who have come out on top. In fact, a win this weekend will make it four championships in a row. Firstly, they defeated Cluainin Iomaint last year by 1-20 to 0-20. Secondly, it was 2-07 to 0-7 in 2018. Thirdly, it was 3-11 vs 0-08 in 2017. 2016 was the last time Cluainin Iomaint were crowned the champions. On that occasion, it was 0-14 to 0-06.

As a result of the trend that has developed in recent years, this final always promises to bring a battle. Despite winning three-in-a-row, Carrick Hurling always have to dig deep to defeat Cluainin Iomaint. But the latter will consider it more than about time they retained the title.

Since this is such a small competition, in terms of the teams competing for it, the runners-up are always so tantalisingly close. Therefore, Cluainin Iomaint will be more driven than ever. But, don’t expect Carrick Hurling to just hand over their title.

Leitrim SHC Final: Cluainin Iomaint vs Carrick Hurling, Saturday 3rd October, 3.30pm (Avantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada).

The Hurling Championship in Clare concludes this Sunday. Sixmilebridge return to the final to defend their title. On the other side of the tie is O’Callaghan Mills who are aiming to win their first Clare SHC since 1937.

Last year, Sixmilebridge won their 14th Senior Club Championship by beating Cratloe in the final. So far, they have a perfect record in their attempt to retain the title, winning four from four. In fact, two of these four games were against Éire Óg Ennis. Firstly, they defeated the fourteen-time winners by five points. Then, in the semi-final there was just a point to separate them as Sixmilebridge marched on to the final.

Likewise, there was just one score between O’Callaghan Mills and Ballyea in the other semi-final. O’Callaghan Mills won out 2-17 to 1-17.

O’Callaghan Mills have not won the Canon Hamilton Cup since 1937. In fact, their last trip to the final was also against Sixmilebridge. That was in 1993. On that occasion, Sixemilebridge won 3-08 to 2-06.

In contrast, Sixmilebridge have been a regular in the Clare SHC Final. After a loss in the 2011 showdown, Sixmilebridge returned to win in 2013, ’15, ’17, and, of course, ’19.

Sixmilebridge will go into this game as favourites. But, after an 83-year drought, O’Callghan Mills’ desire to win will mean Sixmilebridge have to bring their A-game.

Paths to the Final

Semi-final

O’Callaghan Mills 2-17 vs 1-17 Ballyea.

Sixmilebridge 0-17 vs 1-13 Éire Óg Ennis.

Quarter-final

It’s a repeat of the 2018 final in this year’s Limerick Senior Hurling Championship. Doon are out to exact revenge on Na Piarsaigh who are in their fourth final in four years. The two sides do battle on Saturday evening at 7.30pm. Thankfully, the RTÉ cameras are on hand to show all the action.

Last year, Na Piarsaigh were stopped from winning three-in-a-row by Patrickswell. However, they exacted revenge in this year’s semi-final. The city-based team proved too efficient for the 2019 champions. Patrickswell went down to 14 men just before half-time. As a result, Na Piarsaigh were able to finish the stronger of the teams. For instance, they scored the last seven points in a row. Meaning they ran out 1-25 to 0-17 winners.

Meanwhile, Doon defeated Kilmallock in their own semi-final. Two goals from Jack Ryan proved to be the difference. He scored one either side of the interval to help his team to a 2-20 to 1-17 victory. In 2018, Doon lost by eight points in the final to Na Piarsaigh. This year, they are the only undefeated team in the Championship. Specifically, they drew twice in the group stage to qualify in second before their quarter-final and semi-final wins. In fact, one of these draws was to 2019 winners Patrickswell.

Na Piarsaigh’s record speaks for itself and Doon will have to be at their best. Yet, their campaign so far and their previous loss to this opposition in a final will have them raring to go.

Doon vs Na Piarsaigh, Saturday 19th, 7.30pm (RTÉ 2).
