Leinster return to Dublin for their first home match of the URC season, with plenty to prove after back-to-back defeats on their South African tour. Cardiff arrive in better early-season form, having won their opening two matches and scored six tries against Zebre.

Leo Cullen has responded to Leinster’s bonus-point defeat to the Hollywoodbets Sharks by making wholesale changes: the starting XV is entirely different. Dan Sheehan captains the team from hooker, while a number of players are set to make their first appearances of the season.

Handicap Watch

Leinster -20   →   Leinster -25

The line has moved five points in Leinster’s favour following the team announcement.

Leinster make a fresh start at Laya Arena

The scale of Leinster’s changes reflects the demands of a long season and gives several players a chance to make an early impression. Joe McCarthy and James Ryan come into the second row, while Jack Conan, Scott Penny and Max Deegan form the back row.

Oliver Coffey makes his first senior start at scrum-half, with Sam Prendergast at out-half. Jamie Osborne and Garry Ringrose are paired in midfield, and Hugo Keenan returns at full-back. Sheehan leads a pack that also includes Tadhg Furlong and Alex Usanov in the front row.

The venue is another focus. Leinster’s kicking coach Emmet Farrell said the squad are looking forward to returning to the redeveloped ground.

“We’ve all been talking about getting back to Laya Arena. Obviously, the old RDS had some great nights and we’re looking forward to having some really big nights in Laya Arena.”

Cardiff arrive with momentum — and plenty to prove

Cardiff’s results have given them a positive start, but head coach Corniel van Zyl says there is still room for improvement in the performances. His side will have to cope with the occasion of Leinster’s first home match of the season and the return of the Ireland internationals.

“It’s been a pleasing start to the season for us in terms of results but there is plenty to work on in terms of performance and we want to take another step forward this week.

“It’s the opening of the redeveloped RDS, their first home game of the season and with the Ireland internationals potentially returning, there is no doubt that Leinster will be really fired up.

“But that is exactly the kind of challenge we want.”
CORNIEL VAN ZYL, CARDIFF HEAD COACH

Van Zyl has made changes of his own, citing a combination of injuries and the need to rotate the squad. Cardiff have had an eight-day turnaround and will be aiming to maintain their strong start for the full 80 minutes.

Form and Head-to-Head

Leinster’s recent six-match URC sequence shows four wins followed by two defeats on tour in South Africa. Cardiff’s form reads three wins and three defeats, with victories in their two opening matches this season.

SportsNewsIRELAND Analysis: The Bottom Line

Leinster’s team announcement has moved the handicap five points, with the line now standing at -25. The new XV brings back experienced internationals and gives several players their first start of the campaign, but the scale of the changes also means combinations will need to settle quickly.

Cardiff have made a strong start and arrive with confidence, but their record away from Wales remains a concern. Leinster have lost only once in their last 18 matches at the Laya Arena, and Cardiff have not won in Ireland against Leinster since 2004.

The recent 8–7 result is a reminder that Cardiff can make this a difficult fixture, particularly if they keep Leinster from turning territory into tries. The home side will want to set the tone early, use its forward strength and give the new combinations a platform to play.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Leinster’s selection has strengthened the market’s view of the home side, but Cardiff’s unbeaten start makes them a serious test. Leinster need a convincing response in front of their home crowd; Cardiff will be looking to make the occasion uncomfortable.
