FAI to investigate second potential false positive test

The FAI has confirmed that a member of Stephen Kenny’s Ireland squad has returned a negative result from a second COVID-19 test today after first returning a positive result from a UEFA test undertaken on Sunday evening.

The player – who cannot be named at this time – first received a positive result from the UEFA testers on Monday morning in the latest round of UEFA testing for COVID-19 ahead of the Nations League game against Finland in Helsinki on Wednesday.

The FAI medical team then organised a second test for the player which returned a negative result this afternoon.

The player will now be retested as soon as possible before the team’s flight to Finland on Tuesday morning. The HSE and UEFA have been informed of this result.

This latest issue follows confirmation by the HSE on Sunday that an FAI staff employee who was tested positive in a UEFA test in Bratislava last Wednesday – a test later deemed to be a ‘false positive’ result – is now COVID-19 free.

Interim CEO of the FAI Gary Owens said: “This negative result following a positive has been reported to UEFA and the HSE and we are in communication with both UEFA and the HSE regarding the player’s availability for the Finland game.”

Oisín O’Callaghan is Mountainbike Downhill Junior World Champion

Oisín O’Callaghan is Ireland’s newest World Champion.

The 17-year old from Limerick claimed the UCI MTB Downhill Junior World Championships Title in Salzburg, Austria, on Sunday morning.

O’Callaghan blasted down the 2.3-kilometre course, dubbed the “Speedster” as speeds approaching 65 km/h on the rough terrain to finish in a time of 4:02.142.

O’Callaghan finished ahead of the British pair Daniel Slack and James Elliott to win Ireland’s first ever Downhill world title at the Mountain Bike Championships.

Speaking after claiming the rainbow jersey, O’Callaghan said:

“I don’t think it’s sunk in fully yet, later on I think it will. It’s a bit overwhelming right now. I think every racer aims to win. But top five would have been really good.”

“Everyone has been sending me messages and hoping that I do well. I know lots of people were watching the live timing.”

Teammate Christopher Cumming posted the second fastest time in qualification on Friday, but had to settle for 21st in Sunday’s final.

Legendary trainer John Oxx announces retirement

Leading Irish racehorse trainer John Oxx has announced his retirement at the end of season.

“In 2021, I will not be renewing my trainer’s licence. It has been my good fortune to have enjoyed a lot of success and trained some great horses,” the statement read.

“I am extremely grateful to all the owners who have sent me those horses to train since 1979, to all the great jockeys who rode them and to all the exceptional staff who have worked for us over the last 41 years.

“Over the years and right up to date I have been privileged to have some wonderful owners and I will greatly miss training for them but now is a good time for me to stop.

“My concern at the moment is that our staff can find alternative employment as our training business will cease at the end of this turf season in November.”

Oxx has trained some of the best horses ever to run with Sea The Stars topping the list. Other horses include Eurobird, Petite Ile, Timarida, Ridgewood Pearl, Sinndar, Alamshar, Azamour.

10 Fermanagh players test positive for Covid-19 leaving some tough decisions

Fermanagh’s upcoming clash with Clare has been cast into further doubt due to 10 Fermanagh players testing positive for Covid-19. In total, 17 players have now been affected, as a further 7 are self-isolating. This news follows the postponement of all GAA activities in Fermanagh by the county board last Wednesday. The game is scheduled to be played in Cusack park, Ennis at 1pm on Sunday 18th October.

This is set to be a crucial game in the battle for survival in Division 2, as Fermanagh sit bottom of the table and Clare currently reside in 6th. However, so far it has been hugely overshadowed by this issue.

Fermanagh boss Ryan McMenamin confirmed this development on RTE’s Sunday Sport programme, as he struggles to get a team together in time for Sunday’s match-up. Several players are set to finish their isolation period a day before the game.

“There is a lot forgotten about in this pandemic that these lads have actually contracted something”, McMenamin said. “People probably think, ‘ah well, you’ll have the 10 boys back.’ But I can’t expect 10 players to just come back in and play a league game. According to McMenamin his affected players are “totally wrecked”.

Competitive Fairness or fulfilment of fixtures at all cost?

The issue here is that it would be unfair to expect players to play a day after an isolation period. Players may have had Covid symptoms and obviously could not train with the group. In the interest of player welfare, it may not be a fair option to play this game on Sunday. However, in a year of uncertainty competitive fairness cannot always be achieved if the GAA is to see out its fixture schedule for 2020. Tough decisions are going to have to be made. It will either result in a disadvantage to Fermanagh with a make-shift squad on Sunday or postponing the fixture which will have a knock on-effect to both of these teams (and probably others) down the line.

Fermanagh are between a rock and a hard place at the moment, even before we consider that they are bottom of the division on two points. The Erne men deserve a fair chance to stay up, but the GAA will be looking to avoid fixtures chaos before games even get started next weekend. Hopefully a forfeiture of the fixture by Fermanagh will be last resort as it would result in relegation. It will be interesting to see how this situation develops in the coming days.

Jim McGuinness Links up with Galway

Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland winning manager Jim McGuinness links up with Galway for a training session in Tuam yesterday as shown in a video taken at St. Jarlath’s Park. It is understood that McGuinness was working with the Galway footballers as part of an informal agreement. But, manager Padraic Joyce has not ruled out using the experienced coach again.

At a press conference in Galway GAA’s training centre at Loughgeorge, Joyce commented on the inclusion of McGuinness at the session.

“We’ll have to wait for the feedback, the session only took place yesterday at 2 o’clock, it was over at 4. We need to do an analysis of the session and a feedback from the player and see what way it’s working.”

The video offers no major insight to what McGuinness was working on with the footballers. In fact, it merely shows the players executing a simple hand-passing drill. However, viewers were quick to criticise as there were several dropped balls in the 37-second clip. Contrastingly, it will be no surprise to see the use of this drill spike across the country in the next 12 months.

Mental Toughness

Joyce and McGuinness are old friends. In 1999, the pair were a part of IT Tralee’s Sigerson Cup winning team. Now, in a time when Galway are facing a relentless return to action following a seven-month break, Joyce seems keen to make use of McGuinness’ roots in Sports Psychology.

“The mental aspect in the game is huge nowadays. I just felt that looking round the county he’s in my eyes the best performance coach that’s in the country. He’s been there, he’s done it and he’s very relevant to GAA as you know. He’s won it as a manager himself. I just thought it was a perfect fit, it was a no-brainer for me.”

McGuinness boasts a seriously impressive CV that would be a great addition to any outfit. Specifically, he has added to his two All-Ireland medals (as player and as manager) with stints in the professional game. For example, a spell with Celtic was followed by jobs in China and the US where he put his UEFA A License to use. On the other hand, McGuinness has had no inter-county involvement since the 2014 All-Ireland final loss to Kerry.

Currently, Galway are top of Division 1. Therefore, two good results in their remaining games will see the westerners crowned champions. But, these remaining two games are two of the toughest they’ll have in the league. Firstly, rivals Mayo are the opposition. Secondly, five-in-a-row Championship winners Dublin will attempt to stop Joyce from guiding Galway to a first League title since 1981.

If McGuinness links up with Galway for the remainder of the year, he will provide the players with some valuable mental steel. In a year with a knock-out Championship and ongoing uncertainty over fixtures, this will be a valuable asset.

Players called up to Ireland squad for Finland encounter

Five players have been called up to the senior squad amid squad depth crisis

Following Sunday’s meeting with Wales, Stephen Kenny announced he would be calling up additional players for Wednesday’s fixture. “I do, yeah I do… we’ll be addressing that in the next couple of hours” said the Ireland manager after being asked if he would have to make additional call ups. The players that received the call have now been revealed as Dara O’Shea, Jason Knight, Adam Idah, Ryan Manning, Ronan Curtis.

It is Jason Knight’s first call up to the senior squad. The Derby midfielder had previously been selected for the u21s. He will be hoping to get his first cap as well as Ryan Manning and Dara O’Shea, whose form last season will have caught the attention of Stephen Kenny.

Adam Idah had previously been included in the squad before being removed due to close contact with a member of staff who tested positive for covid-19. He has been recalled to the squad following clearance from the HSE. A much needed boost for Stephen Kenny.

The call ups come as a result of 10 players becoming unavailable for selection. The circumstances surrounding the absentees come as a consequence of injury and covid-19 precautions, following positive cases within the camp.

Despite a depleted match day squad, Kenny’s men came out of Dublin with a respectable draw against a Bale-less, but strong Welsh side. Kenny will be hoping he can notch up the first win of his managerial reign against Finland, something he failed to do in their previous encounter. The match takes place at 5 o’clock on Wednesday evening and will be played at the Bolt Arena in Helsinki. Unfortunately for viewers in Ireland, the match will not be shown free to air on Irish television. The match will however be shown live on Sky Sports.

This is the Ireland squad as it stands:

Goalkeepers: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Caoimhin Kelleher (Liverpool), Mark Travers (Bournemouth).
Defenders: Matt Doherty (Tottenham Hotspur), Enda Stevens (Sheffield United), Shane Duffy (Celtic, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion), Kevin Long (Burnley), Cyrus Christie (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Fulham), Dara O’Shea (West Bromwich Albion).
Midfielders: Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), James McCarthy (Crystal Palace), Jeff Hendrick (Newcastle United), Jayson Molumby (Brighton & Hove Albion), Jack Byrne (Shamrock Rovers), Robbie Brady (Burnley), Josh Cullen (Anderlecht), Jason Knight (Derby County), Ryan Manning (Queens Park Rangers).
Forwards: James McClean (Stoke City), Daryl Horgan (Wycombe Wanderers), David McGoldrick (Sheffield United), Sean Maguire (Preston North End), Shane Long (Southampton), Adam Idah (Norwich City), Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth)

Aaron Connolly rejoins Ireland squad

Image

Brighton striker Aaron Connolly has rejoined the Irish squad ahead of their Nations League game against Finland on Wednesday.

The 20 year old along with Adam Idah was left out of the squad for the play off against Slovakia due to Covid 19 protocols. The two players were deemed to be close contacts of a non playing member of staff who tested positive in Bratislava.

The case was subsequently found to be a false positive so after consultation with the HSE, Connolly has been granted permission to rejoin the squad as they search for Stephen Kenny’s first win in charge of the senior men’s team.

Idah had already rejoined the squad in the wake of the 0-0 stalemate with Wales on Sunday, while Dara O’ Shea, Jason Knight, Ryan Manning and Ronan Curtis have also been added to the squad for the game in Helsinki on Wednesday.

Nations Cup – Player ratings as Ireland draw with Wales in Dublin

Here’s how we rated the Irish players as they faced a strong Welsh side

Stephen Kenny’s reign had not gone to plan prior to facing Wales. Having failed to pick up a win against Finland, Bulgaria and Slovakia, some Irish fans had begun doubting his credentials already.  Kenny was afforded no favours after no less than 5 players were sidelined due to a positive test in the Irish camp. Combine this with the other 4 players out of contention and Ireland would have a matchday squad of just 18 players. The circumstances surrounding the Ireland camp and Aaron Ramsey’s return meant that Wales were the firm bookies favourite. Despite this, Ireland produced an impressive performance in which they controlled possession and produced some tidy attacking moves.

Although it was 0-0, it wasn’t a drab affair. Both teams played good football at times without creating too many chances. Stephen Kenny will no doubt be pleased by the performance, especially given the circumstances surrounding the match.

As things stand, Kenny’s men are currently third in the Nations League table, but a win for Bulgaria against Finland would push Ireland to the bottom of the table. The campaign is far from over with three further games still yet to be played, though. It looks like Wales will finish as group winners, but Ireland could still finish in a respectable position given results go their way. They will be hoping to close out the international break with a win against Finland on Wednesday.

Here are our player ratings from tonight’s performance:

IRISH PLAYER RATINGS

DARREN RANDOLPH – 7

Randolph produced a solid display as usual. He was stagnant for the most part as Ireland contained Wales and kept possession comfortably, but when he was needed, he delivered.

He produced a good save on 26 minutes to keep the score at 0-0 but otherwise had very little to do in the first half. He had Irish fans holding their breath at one stage as he dropped the ball after collecting from a corner. Fortunately though, he received a free kick after a collision with Ethan Ampadu. He had little to do in the second half as Ireland continued to control the flow of the game, only making one save from a David Brooks attempt.

MATT DOHERTY – 8

Doherty slotted in at right back to start the game, but just after 20 minutes he would assume the unfamiliar role of centre back. He made a couple positive runs without reward before he was forced into changing position.

He led by example at centre back despite not being natural in the position. He made some important challenges to regain possession and his positional play was up to the mark as he held a good line with the rest of the back four. He swept up several opposition passes and disrupted Welsh attacking moves with ease.

This was arguably Doherty’s best performance in an Ireland shirt and he will have certainly impressed Stephen Kenny after a poor showing against Slovakia.

SHANE DUFFY – 7

Duffy produced another good display at the back which has become the norm over recent years. He consistently provided a problem at set pieces in the first half as he looked to latch onto Robbie Brady’s deliveries.

He was reassured defensively throughout. He made a crucial defensive header towards the end of the match after a quality Welsh cross. Other than a few misplaced passes, Duffy was once again colossal at the back.

KEVIN LONG – 6

It was over a year since Long had played a match for Ireland before today, but his appearance was to be short lived. He was taken off 24 minutes into the game as he sustained a nasty swell above his left eye after an accidental elbow from Welsh target man, Kieffer Moore. Long will be disappointed to have been forced off early but he certainly made an impression while on the pitch. He proved to be very comfortable on the ball and won all of his 50/50s before his unfortunate injury.

ENDA STEVENS – 7

Stevens had a quiet game for the most part. He was good defensively but didn’t provide much in terms of going forward for the majority of the match.

He did however create the best chance of the game with a looping cross into Shane Long, which the latter unfortunately missed.

CONOR HOURIHANE – 6

Hourihane put in a solid performance in the middle of the park without being outstanding. He was accurate in his passing and switched play well at times, but he assumed a deeper role in the absence of James McCarthy. He often collected the ball in his own half instead of operating further up the pitch.

He delivered an excellent ball into the box from a set piece towards the end of the first half but failed to provide a threat in the second 45.

JAYSON MOLUMBY – 7

Jayson Molumby came in for James McCarthy in what was his second senior international appearance. He took his opportunity well in what was a tireless display before he was subbed off towards the end of the match.

He carried the ball well on several occasions and recycled the ball with efficiency. Although he wasn’t as involved in the second half, but still managed to provide much needed energy in midfield. He often dropped deep when defending and provided reliable cover for Cyrus Christie at right back. He’s certainly one for the future.

JEFF HENDRICK – 7

Jeff Hendrick started the match in an advanced midfield position, leaving Molumby and Hourihane to drop deep and do the dirty work.

He had a quiet first half and failed to influence proceeding, often playing sideways or backwards passes. He was more positive in the second half, playing a more progressive game by carrying the ball and looking for forward passes. He was involved in some impressive attacking sequences and can be happy with his second half performance, even if his attempts didn’t always come off.

ROBBIE BRADY – 7

Brady appears to be back to his best for Ireland after a frustrating few years with injuries. He came in on the right wing after Callum Robinson had been sidelined and he has every reason to be happy with his performance.

He was particularly excellent in the first half, consistently threatening the Welsh defence in open play and dead ball situations. He had one of Ireland’s best chances of the game after being gifted the ball from a misplaced pass before striking wide with inches separating the ball and the net.

After his brilliant first half display, Brady was quiet in the second half and was subbed off with 73 minutes played.

JAMES MCCLEAN – 5

James McClean started his second Ireland game in a row on the left after Aaron Connolly remained out of action.

He had a relatively quiet game before being sent off in the 82nd minute for a rash challenge which earned him a second yellow card.

SHANE LONG – 5

Shane Long received a rare start for Ireland after David McGoldrick was sidelined.

Always a willing runner, Long was impressive at times in his pressing of the Welsh backline. He failed to impress in front of goal, however, missing the best chance of the game after a precise cross from Enda Stevens.

He was very quiet before being replaced by Sean Maguire on 73 minutes.

SUBS

CYRUS CHRISTIE – 7

A third choice right back for the national team these days, Christie made a rare appearance after being subbed on for the injured Kevin Long.

He gradually got better as the game progressed. After an unimpressive first half, Christie played well in the second. He was assured defensively without providing much threat going forward. He made one brilliant interception which would eventually lead to an Ireland chance. Overall, it was solid performance from the man on loan at Nottingham Forest.

DARYL HORGAN – 6

After coming on for Robbie Brady in the 73rd minute, Horgan had one of the best chances of the game. He met a James McClean cross with his head which bounced off a Welsh defender into Horgan’s feet, but he blasted over the crossbar at the second opportunity. He carried the ball fairly well at times but failed to create any chances.

SEAN MAGUIRE – 6

Maguire came on for Shane Long in the 73rd minute to try and make his mark on the game. He showed a series of tidy touches towards the end of the match and produced a line breaking pass into Daryl Horgan’s feet, but the latter failed to capitalize. Otherwise, it was a quiet cameo by the Preston man.

JOSH CULLEN – N/A

Cullen didn’t have enough time on the pitch to make an impact.

MAN OF THE MATCH – MATT DOHERTY

NFL MVP Race: Wilson, Rodgers showing there’s life in the old dogs

It may only be week 4, but two frontrunners for league MVP have already begun to distance themselves from the chasing pack. Although young guns Patrick Mahomes (2018 MVP) and Lamar Jackson (2019 MVP) have established themselves as the NFL’s newest poster boys, the old guys are showing that they’re not finished just yet.

Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks :

While many things have changed in this new-look season, one constant is the elite level of play we continue to see from Russell Wilson. The University of Wisconsin alum has been one of the league’s most consistent performers since being drafted in 2012. A Super Bowl champion in 2014, Wilson is a 7-time Pro-Bowler and was an All-Pro in 2019. The one award, however, that continues to elude him is league MVP. While Wilson’s numbers have always been solid, he also been a part of great teams. Seattle’s 2014 Championship run was led by their devasting defence, ‘The Legion of Boom’.

Today, the Seahawks do not have the luxury of an all-time great defence and perhaps this is why Wilson’s play is being noticed. He is doing more, with less. Through the first four weeks, he leads the league in Touchdowns, Yards and Quarterback Rating. At 4-0 the Seahawks appear to be a threat once again and Wilson is the reason why.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers, QB:

Over the past decade, Rodgers has been considered by many as the best QB in the game. However, Rodgers’ 2019 season was defined by his critics as a ‘down year’, with others saying the 36-year-old was ‘falling off a cliff’. It was clear Rodger’s numbers last year were down from previous ones. Only 26 TD passes. Only. The reality is that the criticism Rodgers receives is due, in large part, to the incredibly high standards he has set in the past. The California native has the highest QB Rating, as well as the best Touchdown-Interception ratio in NFL history.

Whatever his critics said, Rodgers was listening. Through 4 games this season, he has an incredible 13 TDs with 0 INT. The Packers are 4-0 and behind second-year head coach Matt LaFleur appear to be an offensive juggernaut. If Rodgers and LaFleur can remain in sync the Packers may be the team to beat in the NFC.
