Three of flat racing’s biggest shock victories

As the flat racing season begins to wind down, now is the time for reflection. With the return of spectators to the racetrack thanks to changes in the governments coronavirus restrictions, the days of eerily silent stands and lonely podium celebrations are hopefully a thing of the past — and it seems that the quality of racing was amped up a notch as we came away from behind closed doors.

Of course, for every memorable victory, and there has been plenty this flat racing season, there is the occasional shock. Seemingly out of nowhere a horse will come along and defy all expectations, causing a shakeup in the betting odds and blowing the tips for horse racing out of the water. Seeing as though there have already been some big upsets on this year’s calendar, we thought it would be appropriate to look at three of the best shock wins in modern flat racing history.

Torquator Tasso wins Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2021)

Getting things started is perhaps the biggest upset Longchamp has seen in its long, prestigious history. Entering as an 80/1 outsider, it was Torquator Tasso who stole the show in the city of love, with many inside the stadium left to scratch their head and wonder what they had really just witnessed. For a race like the Arc, with so much heritage and prestige, things like this weren’t supposed to happen.

Named after the famous Italian poet, ironically no superlatives would do this performance justice as the Germans took over the French capital, with none of the Parisians expecting anything of Rene Piechulek on his first run at the Arc, but on the right day with the right conditions, anything is possible.

Billesdon Brook wins the 1000 Guineas (2018)

The 1000 Guineas is always an exciting time of year in the flat racing season. The weather is starting to get better, there is usually a bank holiday on the horizon and racegoers know that unpredictability is in the air — all the ingredients for a massive shock which Billesdon Brook made sure to deliver on. Coming in at 66/1, trainer Richard Hannon picked up a second victory in the race as his three-year-old motored through to victory by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

“That was a surprise but there was nothing fluky about it, she travelled lovely,” Hannon said.

“All of our Guineas winners have needed their first run, we got Sky Lantern beaten in her trial and Night Of Thunderbeaten in his, and they both won here.”

150/1 outsider Nando Parrado wins at Royal Ascot (2020)

As mentioned before, the majority of the races in 2020 were ran behind closed doors, and it is all the more disappointing when rare moments like this happen. The meeting’s highest ever priced winner, Nando Parrado, winning at 150/1. Unbelievable. The Clive Cox-trained horse made history in Berkshire, breaking records that stretched back as far as the 1970s to cement in their legacy in one of the most infamous Ascot weekends.

For as good as the performance was, the Coventry based trainer insisted it wasn’t just good luck on their side: “I think we shouldn’t treat it as a fluke because we had a positive plan for him anyway, which is very much alive after that performance.”

Liverpool VC James Milner praises ‘great day’s work’ against Atletico

Liverpool midfielder and vice-captain James Milner has praised the side for their win against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night in the UEFA Champions League.

The six-time winners came out on top in a hectic Group B battle at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2021/22 season.

It was Liverpool’s second-ever win against the Spanish champions and their first since April 2010.

Liverpool now sit five points ahead of Porto and last night’s opponents on nine points in the group table and a win against Atletico at Anfield would seal a spot in the last 16.

Milner praised his team for getting three points at Atletico’s home ground – the side had struggled against them in Spain back in March of last year.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, the number seven said: “Obviously it’s a tough place to come, a well-organised team, difficult to play against, passionate fans, passionate manager.

“It’s not just the football side of things, obviously it’s the atmosphere and everything that goes with it. So to come here and get three points is a great day’s work.”

Liverpool now need only two points to confirm their place in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League for the fifth time in a row under Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseyside team have never failed to progress past the group stage under the German manager.

If they were to miss out on a spot in the Round of 16, a spot in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League is confirmed after their win last night and Porto’s victory over AC Milan.

“Now we’re in a strong position in the group but we need to keep our foot down and keep this run of form going.

“We’ve got plenty of games coming up thick and fast, so we need to keep performing and putting in the performances.”

Galway forward Shane Walsh thinks TMO could work in GAA

Galway senior footballer Shane Walsh believes that a television match official (TMO), as seen in rugby, could be used in Gaelic sports.

The TMO is someone who watches the match action on a television screen outside of the ground and informs the referee of anything they may have missed or helps to make a tough decision easier through the use of replays from different angles.

Walsh went down in the 27th minute of the Connacht final after an off-the-ball collision with Padraig O’Hora.

The centre forward was able to continue after a painkiller injection before the second half but O’Hora went unpunished for his actions and the Galwegian’s let their five-point lead slip.

The 28-year-old believes that the introduction of a TMO could prevent refereeing mistakes such as this from occurring and stop Gaelic football’s dive into cynicism.

Speaking at the launch of the John West Féile 50th anniversary celebrations, the Two-time JJ Nestor Cup winner said: “No one was coached how to play football that way.

“When you were coached how to tackle, it’s tackling the ball, you’re staying on your feet, you’re trying to turn them to their weaker side.

“They’re the elements of defending, it’s not the kind of things you see going on in a game.

“That’s only one incident. Numerous incidents go on in games. It needs to be cut out. You have young kids seeing that, and if they see that kind of carry-on, they do the exact same thing.

“In cases like that, we need to provide supports to the referees. They’re not going to see everything that happens.

“I just believe that could definitely be something that could be looked at, the TMO side of things or something to that effect, where there’s an extra eye watching what’s going on in the game.

“That is the biggest thing, that would cut out the cynicism that’s in the game at the moment.”

In 2013, the GAA introduced HawkEye to games held at Croke Park when Kildare faced Offaly in a Leinster championship clash following a trial period.

The technology has been a success since being introduced and is currently available in three stadiums across Ireland – Croke Park, Semple Stadium and Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

HawkEye, like Walsh’s TMO suggestion, was present in other sports such as tennis previous to its introduction to the Gaelic games.

The introduction of a TMO could help the referee to focus on maintaining the fluidity of a game with the safety net of an extra eye on the game installed so that they can be informed of anything they missed.

Walsh believes that a TMO could help improve the sport further on top of Proposal B, which he supports.

“We need to adapt to it, and you need to provide supports to the referees. They’re not going to see everything that happens.

“I just believe that could definitely be something that could be looked at, the TMO side of things or something to that effect, where there’s an extra eye watching what’s going on in the game.

“If something happens in the game, they buzz the referee. If they want a camera on the side of the pitch, but it should be another referee looking after it, saying to the match referee, ‘look, I spotted an off-the-ball incident, we’re in black card territory. You can look at it if you want, but I’d be saying black card’.

“And then the ref goes and makes that call. Simple as. That way then, if that happens more, it would cut out the kind of stuff that goes on off the ball.”

Kilmallock v Patrickswell – Limerick SHC final Preview

The Limerick SHC final goes ahead this weekend with the surprise climactic match up of Kilmallock and Patrickswell

The SHC final throws in at 15:45 on Sunday, 24th October in the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Referee Eamon Stapleton will take charge of the tie.

The match will be shown live on the TG4 show GAA BEO with coverage starting at 15:15 on Sunday.

Kilmallock took the long route to reach this final. After they finished in second place to Na Piarsaigh in the group, narrowly beating out Ballybrown, the south sided team beat ‘A’ final runners up South Liberties.

Last week the team needed a very spirited and powerful display to knock out Doon with a scoreline of 4-20 to 2-16.

Freetaker Michael Houlihan will be an important part of the scores in this final. He will also need help from the forward partnership of Oisin O’Reilly and Graeme Mulcahy in order to claim silverware.

Patrickswell followed a similar path to their opponents after finishing second in the group behind Doon. Subsequent victories against ‘A’ final winners Adare and favorites Na Piarsaigh go them to the big stage.

That win against the current titleholders was very impressive, grinding out a five-point lead in the later stages of the match to win.

Tobar Padraig is a club made of a few of Limerick’s new golden generation and they will be hungry for another trophy.

Score Prediction

On Sunday we will find out if Ciaran O’Connor and his defense will be enough to keep out Cian Lynch and the Gillane brothers. Although Patrickswell is the clear favorite going into the tie, this game will not be a landslide or won with any great ease.

Expect Patrickswell to win the final by around three points.

Gymnastics Ireland CEO reacts to McClenaghan WGC exit

Irish gymnastics athlete Rhys McClenaghan finished competition on Wednesday morning after a long Covid-19 related delay at the World Gymnastics Championships with a score of 13.766.

One of the competitors at the event tested positive for the coronavirus and the athletes were forced to wait for all protocols to be carried out.

McClenaghan took to the pommel horse after the delay but slipped towards the end of his routine, which ended hopes of an appearance in the final.

The Antrim native had previously missed out on a medal at Tokyo 2020 earlier this summer due to a mistake.

Speaking about Rhys McClenaghan’s performance in today’s men’s qualifiers, Gymnastics Ireland CEO Mr Ciaran Gallagher said: “It was a difficult subdivision for Rhys McClenaghan out in Japan this morning, and indeed for all the other gymnasts in his sub as a Covid-19 related issue led to over an hour delay to the competition.

“The tight covid protocols and response to any covid related matter from the Japanese gov/organisers are of course completely understandable however of course this kind of impact mid-event is felt by all the gymnasts.

“As ever, Rhys pushed through his routine in difficult circumstances and was unlucky not to final on this occasion.

“We all know what he is capable of and are all incredibly proud to have him fly the flag so well for Ireland/Gymnastics Ireland.

“With this being the last major event in 2021 Rhys, our National Coach Luke and Performance & Technical Manager Sally will now refocus on 2022 as the campaign towards Paris 2024 begins next year.”

Ireland still have skin in the game at the World Championships in Japan as Emma Slevin is preparing to compete in the Women’s All-Around final.

The final will take place on Thursday morning from 9:55 am and will be available to watch live on the RTÉ Player.

Chelsea v Malmo FF – Preview, Betting, Probable Starting Teams

Now in round three of the Champions League groupstage and Chelsea will be looking to bounce back against Swedish opposition

Chelsea v Malmo FF will kick off at 20:00 tonight, the 20th of October in Stamford Bridge. French referee Francois Letexier will take charge of the match.

The Blues are finally fully back to their winning ways but are still not convincing. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy put in a Man of the Match performance to beat Brentford 2-1 at the weekend.

Manager Thomas Tuchel will now want a strong win in the Champions League. Last time they lost to Juventus in a weak, poor display. They sit in second place on goal difference in the group, a win will be vital now to their progression.

Malmo are the best that Sweden has to offer. They currently are perched on top of their league having won their last two games.

European football has not been as easy for them this season. They are yet to score a goal having lost 3-0 to Juventus and 4-0 to Zenit St Petersburg.

Jon Dahl Tomasson and his team will need a win tonight or they will be left too far adrift to save their campaign in Europe.

It is very rare that these two sides face each other. They last met in the Europa League qualifiers in 2019 where the Blues won 5-1 on aggregate. That victory included a 3-0 victory at home for the London club.

Chelsea v Malmo FF Match Betting

Chelsea to win: 1/14

Draw: 2/1

Malmo FF to win: 30/1

Score Prediction

There is nearly no point in thinking that Malmo could cause an upset against the Blues away from home. Chelsea will win this game but it will be interesting to see by how much.

If Tuchel decides to play a strong side then they could easily keep a clean sheet while inflicting a heavy scoreline.

Expect this game to end 4-0 to Chelsea.

Sri Lanka v Ireland – Preview, Squads, Where To Watch

Ireland play Sri Lanka on Wednesday, October 20 in the second of three games in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup group stage.

Both sides won their first games in Group A and will be aiming to continue their strong starts and put one foot into the Super 12.

Ireland dismantled the Netherlands courtesy of some fantastic bowling – Curtis Campher took four wickets in four balls and the ever-consistent Mark Adair got three of his own.

The target of 106 was light work for the Irish as they surpassed it with 29 balls left to win their first match of this year’s T20 World Cup.

At a press conference on Monday night, Head Coach Graham Ford said: On Sri Lanka, probably about half the squad I know pretty well, and the coach I know very well.

“We know they are going to be a very competitive and energetic unit – they have had previous successes in this format in previous years and previous T20 World Cups.

“So, it will be a huge game for us, but I think it will be a really exciting challenge – we’ll focus on going out and really enjoying this opportunity.

Sri Lanka did not even need 75% of their overs to be victorious over Namibia in their first game.

The Namibians managed only 96 runs in the T20 World Cup debut before the tenth wicket in the final over.

The 2014 T20 World Champions reached triple digits after 13.3 overs to end the match early.

Maheesh Theekshana led the team with three wickets while Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Avishka Fernando went unbeaten at-bat to seal the win.

They have a special group – and have some players that can do some unorthodox stuff – but our lads have a lot of information on them, and at the end of the day, it will be all about how we play on the day.

“We pitched up against the Netherlands with a real positive energy and commitment, and if we bring that again on Wednesday then we give ourselves a good chance.”

Squads

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (C), Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Wanindu Hasaranga, Avishka Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dushmantha Chameera, Akila Dananjaya, Dhananjaya De Silva, Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Kusal Perera, Maheesh Theekshana.

Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Gareth Delany, Joshua Little, Kevin O’Brien, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Benjamin White, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Neil Rock, Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Where To Watch

The match will start at 3 pm and will be available to watch on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket – coverage begins at 2:30 pm.

You can keep track of the live score on the ICC website and Cricket Ireland will provide Twitter updates throughout the match.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United will go head-to-head on the Gameweek 9 of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

This game will be an interesting game for both teams. The last time these two sides met was last February where Palace came out 1-2 victors at St James’s Park. With both Palace and Newcastle gaining a win over each other in the 2020/2021 season.

Crystal Palace Retrospective

Palace currently sits 14th, with 1 win, 2 losses and 5 draws. 8 points from a possible 21 were to be expected after a change of manager, especially from a manager like Patrick Vieira.

In their last game, Palace played brilliantly against London rivals Arsenal, coming from behind to lead 1-2, only to concede in the last minute of injury-time to an Alexandre Lacazette equalizer.

Newcastle United Retrospective

After their massive Saudi led takeover, Newcastle lost their first game under new ownership after a 2-3 home loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

Since then Steve Bruce has been sacked and the club will be led on an interim basis.

The club currently sits second from bottom in 19th position. Winless after eight league games, with 3 draws and 5 losses so far.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between Crystal Palace and Newcastle United will kick off at 3 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday, 23 October 2021, at Selhurst Park.

Where to watch Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

The game will not be televised live on any UK platforms.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United team news

For Palace, Nathan Ferguson is out with a shin injury with no return day. While Eberechi Eze is suffering from lower leg problems and will be ruled out long-term.

Wilfried Zaha could make an appearance after suffering a small knock.

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will miss the game from suspension after picking up two yellow cards against Tottenham.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is out with a foot injury, while Paul Dummett (Calf) and Freddie Woodman (Muscular) are out with no return date.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United prediction

Palace will be more than up for this game after squabbling away a crucial 3 points in their last game against Arsenal.

While Newcastle’s preparations will surely be all over the place after Steve Bruce’s dismissal.

I can only see a Palace win here.

Prediction: 3-1 Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United Sack Steve Bruce

Newcastle United Sack Steve Bruce

Newcastle United have sacked head coach Steve Bruce.

Rumours have been persisting for weeks of Bruce’s dismissal after the Saudi Arabian-backed consortium, led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed a £305m takeover of Newcastle on October 7th.

The 60-year-old Bruce was in the dug-out for his side’s 2-3 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, which was his 1,000th match as a manager.  With non-executive chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and director Amanda Staveley in the stands at St. James’s Park.

The defeat to Tottenham was Newcastle’s 5th league loss of the season, with the club second from bottom, winless after their opening eight games of the campaign.

Now, it has been confirmed that Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent, with the club confirming this in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A club statement read;

Newcastle United can confirm that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach by mutual consent.

He leaves the Magpies after more than two years in charge, having steered the club to 13th and 12th-place finishes in the Premier League and reaching the quarter-final stage in both the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his tenure.

Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.

A statement was also released from Bruce after his departure from Tyneside;

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Assistant coach Graeme Jones will take charge of the squad on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be joined by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Rhys McClenaghan left frustrated in World Championships

Antrim gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has failed to progress from the qualifiers at the World Gymnastics Championships in Japan this morning

It was a difficult day for the Irishman and for many today in the Gymnastic Arena in Kitakyushu. Rhys McClenaghan had to wait a long period before he got his chance to take to the pommel horse.

One of the other competitors at the event had tested positive for Covid-19 that morning and subsequently all equipment in the Arena.

This was the 22-year-old’s chance to make up for an unfortunate mistake that led to him missing out on a medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

When McClenaghan finally took to the pommel horse, he started well. He got through his tough routine swiftly using his good physical strength to control himself.

Unfortunately, the Irishman slipped towards the end of his routine and that would prove very costly this morning. He scored 13.766 which would not be enough to reach the final stage.

McClenaghan took to Twitter to share his disappointment and frustration:

“I’m sad I trained until this point just to have the chalk wiped off the equipment and been told to wait 1 hour 30 mins before I competed due to a competitor in the subdivision before testing positive for Covid.

“Time to go home and just hope there’s not another Worlds like this one.”

This ends a very disappointing year for the Antrim man. Still only 22, he will have plenty of time to grow his trophy cabinet at the World Championships and Olympic Games.

In his last World’s two years ago in Stuttgart, he claimed a bronze medal.

There is still a chance for Ireland in the World Championships

This is not the end for Irish hopes in Japan as Galway teenager Emma Slevin has reached the women’s All-Around final. That event will be shown live on RTE Player at 10:00 on Thursday 21st October in what could be a momentous day for Irish gymnastics.
