Arsenal injury update: Odegaard hopeful for weekend

After a victorious night in the EFL Cup, Mikel Arteta will now focus on the Arsenal injury table going into a weekend with more football

The Gunners had another positive evening after they beat Leeds United at home yesterday. They ran out 2-0 winners in the Round four tie after Eddie Nketiah and Calum Chambers goals.

It was not all good news for the London club as they sustained some injury problems during the game.

Ben White

The Red’s marquee defender White was taken off after 55 minutes in their impressive Cup win. He was eventually replaced with the team’s goalscorer Chambers who scored with virtually his first touch.

After the game, manager Arteta spoke to the press about White. He said that the English defender had come down with an illness but assured fans that the bug had not spread amongst the rest of the team.

Pablo Mari

Mari also missed out on being part of the squad due to illness. It has been confirmed that the illness is not Covid-19 even though the Spaniard has not been in the squad since the 18th of September.

Martin Odegaard

Although the type of injury that the Norweigan sustained has not been specified, Arteta said that he picked up a small knock in training. He also said that the player will hopefully be back in time for their weekend game against Leicester.

Kieren Tierney

Tierney is another of the Arsenal injury listed defenders. The Scotsman continues to recover from a bruised ankle that he picked up during training.

The left-back is expected to miss out on another week of football before returning to the pitch.

Granit Xhaka

The former Arsenal captain is on the long road to recovery. He sustained a major knee injury while playing last month.

He is still expected to miss out on the next three months of football before making a return in the New Year.

Eight Olympians heading to 2021 FINA World Championships

Swim Ireland have announced their teams for the 2021 FINA World Championships (25m) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and the LEN European Championships (25) in Kazan, Russia, the latter event beginning next week.

In the main, athletes were selected to compete in one or other of the two events, as it is unusual for both to take place in the same calendar year; events being pushed back because of the pandemic has resulted in the end of 2021 and much of 2022 being more hectic for international racing than usual.

The World Championships is set to run over six days from 16th – 21st December, with the European equivalent also running over six days from 2nd – 7th November 2021.

Ireland’s youthful European Championships team features three athletes – Eoin Corby, Molly Mayne and Grace Hodgins – that will focus on gathering experience, while among the 12 athletes in Ireland’s heading to Abu Dhabi are eight Olympians, including Tokyo 2020 Olympic finalist Mona McSharry.

The Irish team for the World Championships will also feature Olympic Top-16 finisher Daniel Wiffen and Shane Ryan and Danielle Hill, who have performed notably in the 2021 season of the International Swimming League (ISL).

Fellow Olympians Brendan Hyland, Finn McGeever, Jack McMillan, and Ellen Walshe will also compete, with Darragh Greene the only Tokyo 2020 swimmer not travelling, as he only recently returned to the training pool after an extended post-Olympics break.

Identified relays will once again be a strong focus for the Irish contingent with some athletes selected to the team specifically for this purpose. The Irish team will be led by Team Leader Jon Rudd and Head Coach Ben Higson, with Michael McCarthy also selected as a team coach to support the travelling contingent.

The Irish team at the European Championships in Kazan will be led by Head Coach John Szaranek, who will be assisted by Trojan Swimming Club coach Jonathan Preston.

On this team, multiple Irish Junior Record holder Eoin Corby is the most experienced of the group. He and teammate Molly Mayne recently started their short course season at the FINA Swimming World Cup.

They will be joined by youngster Grace Hodgins, who will gain her first Irish cap at all levels when she first steps onto the blocks.

National Performance Director Jon Rudd said: “After what was our most successful Olympic Games in at least 25 years, we are delighted to be able to return to some high-quality international racing, something that eluded us during 2020 and 2021 as we approached Tokyo.

“There’s very much an eye on the future with some of these athletes and they all met what we felt was a stringent and robust Selection Policy to make these teams.

“Some athletes have been unable to take up their places, particularly for Kazan, as November is not an easy period for those in full-time education, but for those who can take the opportunity, we will look forward to some fast and exciting short course racing across the two meets.”

The Swim Ireland Selection Policy permitted Mona McSharry a place on both Irish National Teams at these two events, but McSharry will focus on the Abu Dhabi event due to her ongoing academic commitments.

The athletes returning from Kazan will also race in the 2021 Irish National Short Course Championships, which take place at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin from the 16th – 18th December.

Donegal SFC final to be televised on TG4

The Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Donegal Senior Football Championship final will be televised on TG4.

The teams are locked in after St Eunan’s and Naomh Conaill both won their semi-finals at the weekend.

Eunan’s pulled away from Naomh Micheál in the second half to earn their place in the Donegal senior football final.

The club’s footballers join the hurlers as county finalists, with the latter set to play for the county hurling title this weekend.

Naomh Conaill edged out a grudge match against Kilcar in O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny in a game that was also shown live on TG4 after Paddy McBrearty’s late equalising goal was ruled out.

It was the first game between the two sides since the controversial 2020 county final, which was won by Naomh Conaill on penalties – the first county final to be decided by spot kicks.

The Donegal inter-county footballer’s goal did not stand as the referee called a square ball, which replays showed to be right as McBrearty had entered the square before the free-kick from which he got the ball was taken.

The rematch between the 2020 finalists went the way of Naomh Conaill once again and Martin Regan’s team will now have a chance to win a third county championship in a row.

To do so, they must beat the last side who achieved that feat – St Eunan’s, led by John Haran and Donegal legend Brendan Devenney, won the county championship in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

However, the team have only won the Dr Maguire Cup once more since becoming the third-ever to win three years uninterrupted.

St Eunan’s were victorious in 2014 after five years without reaching the final and came second in their defending campaign but a six-year gap exists between their most recent final appearance and their upcoming match.

Naomh Conaill will face St. Eunan’s in the final at 3.15 pm on Sunday 7th November live on TG4.

St Eunan’s and Setanta to contest third Donegal SHC final in a row

The Michael Murphy Sports Donegal Senior Hurling Championship final will take place this weekend on Saturday, October 30th and will feature St Eunan’s and Setanta once again.

The match will be played the home ground of Eunan’s, O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny.

This will be the third year in a row that the two sides will play each other in the final stage of the county championship.

Setanta are looking to continue their period of dominance in Donegal and stamp out the threat Of Eunan’s once again.

The challengers to their crown are hoping that it will be third time lucky as they aim to win their first Donegal senior title since 1972.

The pair earned the right to another rematch after wins over Burt and Buncrana respectively.

Eunan’s beat the record-holders by five points to progress to the final stage to the despair of Burt’s players and staff.

Burt have not reached the final since 2018 and are the last side to beat Setanta in the final, winning their 39th title by two goals.

Setanta brushed aside Buncrana, who could not match their intensity and tempo as they fell to a 20-point loss in Letterkenny.

The defending champions have won all six of their games in this year’s county hurling championship and are yet to see a side they face stay within ten points of them.

The Killygordon club have also only conceded 72 points after six games – an average of 12 points conceded per game.

Eunan’s are another high-scoring side but their defence allowed over 100 points in the round-robin games.

They will need to show that they have improved that facet of their game enough to stop Setanta’s attack from putting a cricket score past them.

Before the senior final, Aodh Ruadh Ballyshannon and Dungloe will contest the Michael Murphy Sports Donegal junior hurling championship.
