St Eunan’s complete Donegal senior hurling double with win over Setanta

St Eunan’s completed a historic Donegal senior hurling league and championship double for the first time in almost 50 years when they defeated Setanta by a point at O’Donnell Park in the county championship final on Saturday.

They defeated the Killygordon side in the fixture at the third time of asking, winning 2-9 to 0-14 after falling short in the two years previous.

The Eunan’s defence stood strong after the Cathedral town men started off the strongest of the two sides and held onto the lead for the duration of the game to earn the side their first Donegal SHC title since 1972.

The two goals that the Letterkenny team scored proved to be key as no individual player had more than one score from play for the side.

A Russell Forde goal had helped give Eunan’s a six-point lead before Setanta had got their first score.

The side from Killygordon got into the game eventually but the challengers’ defence and some inspirational scores gave them a half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-5.

Setanta started the second half strongly and were beginning to reel Eunans in but a super team goal that saw the sliothar in seven Eunans players’ hands ended with Kevin Kealy striking to the net.

Previous to this, goalkeeper Cian Hennessey had saved Eunan’s blushes with several important stops.

Their second goal returned their lead to six points and the defending champions rallied once more to get within a point of Eunans.

However, heroic work from the 14 Letterkenny men behind the sliothar saw the side hold out for their first SHC triumph in 49 years.

The shock win on Saturday brought an end to Setanta’s dominant two-year reign in the competition.

The championship victory is the icing on top of a fantastic year for the side, who had previously won the league in July.

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita sidelined once again

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is set to miss the club’s second home UEFA Champions League game of the season against Atletico Madrid after failing to play the full 90 minutes against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

The Liverpool No.8 had to be withdrawn during the first half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion due to a hamstring injury, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming on in his place.

The substitution took place just 19 minutes into the game and the Guinean’s latest injury follows Paul Pogba’s woeful tackle on the midfielder in the 5-0 win over Manchester United the Sunday previous.

Keita will undergo a scan on the issue to determine its severity, but Klopp does not anticipate the midfielder can be involved versus Atletico.

“He told me, he showed me [the] hamstring,” Klopp said to Liverpoolfc.com post-match. “So, I don’t know, we will see; obviously tomorrow [or] the day after tomorrow he will have a scan and then we will know.

“But if somebody feels the hamstring, it would be the first time that he is ready for the next game. So, I can’t see that.”

Keita has already missed 54 games for Liverpool due to injury in his time with the club, amassing 14 injuries over three years in red, with this hamstring injury set to add to that.

The large number of injuries does not include the knock that he recovered from in time to face Brighton.

Liverpool currently have three fit midfielders in their squad – Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

19-year-old Tyler Morton, who celebrated his birthday on Halloween, is also available for selection, having been named on the bench for Saturday’s game.

It remains to be seen whether Thiago Alcantara or Fabinho will be deemed fit for the match against the Spanish champions.

Thiago Alcantara joined in on Thursday’s session as he continued his recovery from a calf injury but was not named in the matchday squad at the weekend.

Fabinho’s knee issue kept him out of the clash with Graham Potter’s Seagulls – it is the third game in a row that Liverpool did not have him at their disposal.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds face Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, November 3 at 8 pm.

Energia Men’s All-Ireland League Round-Up – Round 4

Defending Energia Men’s All-Ireland League champions Cork Constitution ended their three-match losing run with a 32-13 bonus-point win over Dublin University in Round 4.

A week on from his first senior start at out-half for Munster, Jack Crowley was back in club colours in the All-Ireland League – playing at full-back – and he was at the heart of Con’s strong start at Temple Hill.

He touched down out wide in the 14th minute after being set up by a roaming Sean French, who had caught a clever Duncan Williams kick. Greg Higgins, French and former captain Niall Kenneally also touched down for Brian Hickey’s men.

Ulster Academy forward Harry Sheridan strode over late on for Trinity’s lone try, while Leinster’s Jack Dunne and Rob Russell got some more game-time for the students.

Conor Hayes continues to light up Division 1A this season, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Young Munster overcame Lansdowne 24-20 on the Aviva Stadium’s main pitch.

Hayes, the strongly-built former Connacht Eagles winger, finished Saturday’s epic encounter with 17 points, including a crucial 63rd-minute try which saw him combine out wide with Patrick Campbell.

Lansdowne fought back from 17-3 down to lead 20-17 – Leinster pair Peter Dooley and Cormac Foley both crossed the whitewash – but the Cookies prevailed to make it four wins on the trot.

Replacement Jack Milligan’s late penalty earned Ballynahinch a losing bonus point against Garryowen, who triumphed 27-22 to stay top of the table. Hooker Pat O’Toole (2) and Munster flanker Jack Daly claimed the tries for the Light Blues.

Clontarf hooker Dylan Donnellan grabbed a hat-trick of tries in their 29-14 comeback victory at Terenure College. Converted scores from Alan Bennie and Colm de Buitléar had ‘Nure in front, but ‘Tarf finished strongly with replacement Adrian D’Arcy registering their bonus point.

Despite UCC winger Matthew Bowen’s brilliant hat-trick, which included a 90-metre intercept effort, UCD opened their win account at Belfield where Munster’s Paddy Patterson (2) and Leinster Academy flanker Sean O’Brien both touched down in a 40-31 bonus point success.

Highfield and Old Wesley continue to lead the way in Division 1B, with Shane O’Riordan’s 78th-minute penalty guiding the Corkmen to a tense 20-17 victory at Malone.

Winger Tommy O’Callaghan touched down twice as Old Wesley won 36-20 at Naas, while St. Mary’s College, who had a hat-trick from classy centre Myles Carey, ended City of Armagh’s winning start with a superb 35-13 bonus point triumph.

Munster’s Jake Flannery shone at out-half in Shannon’s 32-10 dismissal of Old Belvedere. He scored two tries and kicked 12 points.

Full-back Paddy Fox’s brace of tries propelled Navan past Banbridge on a 30-20 scoreline, as the sides swapped places at the bottom of the table.

Stormy end to Irish Sailing Youth National Championships

There was a stormy conclusion to Investwise Irish Sailing Youth National Championships on Cork Harbour

The final day of the Investwise Irish Sailing Youth National Championships was cancelled as gale-force winds swept across Cork Harbour.

However, final results from Saturday’s long day afloat weren’t initially confirmed as two protests on Sunday morning might have affected the standings.

On Saturday evening, a protest by ILCA6 (Laser Radial) overall leader Eve McMahon saw the Howth Yacht Club sailor extend her lead over Michael Crosbie of the Royal Cork YC when he was disqualified from Race 10 due to a port and starboard incident.

However, the Crosshaven sailor returned to the protest room on Sunday morning. He had his result reinstated as McMahon had not informed the race committee of her protest on Saturday.

McMahon still emerged as ILCA6 Youth National Champion after the tie-break with Crosbie.

Meanwhile, the host club’s James Dwyer with Ben O’Shaughnessy won the 29er skiff national title by a single point. This was after a close contest with Timothy Norwood and Nathan Van Steenberge from Royal Irish YC and National YC.

The runners-up were also in the protest room on Sunday morning. They were seeking redress for equipment failure in their second race of the series on Friday but their submission was ruled out of time.

Crosshaven’s Rian Collins handsomely won the 38-boat Topper class with a 12-point lead over his clubmate Dan O’Leary. Collins will now be considering whether to move into single or double-handed classes within the Irish Sailing Academy.

The Topper fleet shared the same course as the ILCA4 (Laser 4.7) class. This was the second largest of the event with 31 boats. A newcomer to the class Sam Ledoux of the National YC emerged youth national champion.

The Malahide and Wexford Harbour pairing of Jack McDowell and Henry Thompson continued their three-day lead of the 420 class. They won over Eoghan Duffy with Conor Paul of Lough Ree YC in their battle in the nine boat class.

“We have seen incredible racing over the past three days and great sailing by all 144 young sailors,” said David O’Brien, President of Irish Sailing. “To achieve three out of four days in mid-Autumn and only lose one race from the schedule is a mark of the dedication of the 100-plus volunteers led by organiser Maurice Collins.”

“From the standard of competition that we have seen over the series, these sailors have clearly managed to keep up their training during the Covid pandemic,” said Sean Evans, Irish Sailing’s Youth Academy manager. “Our prospects for 2022 are very good thanks to this resilience and positive attitude.”

Irish Sailing’s Olympic Steering Group (OSG) will now review the results of the championships. They will also decide the line-up for Ireland’s squad at the Youth World Championships in Oman in mid-December.

Ireland Men’s youth head coaches announce shortlists after trials

The Ireland Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 Men’s head coaches have released shortlists after trials were held at the Basketball Ireland National Camp in Gormanston, Co. Meath.

Ireland U16 men’s head coach Pat Price has selected 41 players for the next stage of trials, following initial trials at Gormanston last weekend.

“We are very happy with the turnout, as well as the physical and mental effort by the boys over the weekend. It’s a long process and we’ll learn a lot in the coming months”, Price said.

Ireland U17 men’s head coach Gareth O’Reilly has shortlisted 61 players following recent trials at the Gormanston.

“It was great to see the large number of players from all around the country that took part in our talent identification session this past Saturday,” O’Reilly noted.

“After such a long time away from the court, the quality of play and the desire to wear the green jersey was evident for all to see.

“Myself and my coaching staff are really looking forward to working with the group of selected players as we move forward to the next phase of our selection process in November.”

Ireland U18 men’s head coach Paul Kelleher has picked 51 players for the second round of selection, following trials at Gormanston last weekend.

“We had an extensive process to identify the players for the next phase of the selection process. We were quite impressed with the talent on show and look forward to more engagement and finalising the squad,” Kelleher said.

The next round of trials are due to take place on November 20th and 21st.

Tyrone SFC semi-finals – Previews, Where To Watch

Tyrone GAA

The LCC Tyrone Senior Football Championship semi-finals will take place this weekend as four teams – Dromore, Errigal Ciaran, Trillick and Coalisland Na Fianna – look to book their places in the county final.

Dromore and Trillick will go head-to-head in the first of two Tyrone senior semi-finals when they meet at O’Neills Healy Park in Omagh on Saturday, October 30 at 7:15 pm.

Errigal Ciaran and Coalisland Na Fianna will battle it out to determine who gets the right to face the winner of Saturday’s semi-final in Pomeroy on Sunday, October 31 at 2:45 pm.

Both games are part of double-headers with the two Tyrone intermediate football semi-finals.

Owen Roe O’Neills will take on Gortin St Patrick’s in the first intermediate semi-final which will take place prior to the match between Dromore and Trillick in Omagh at 4:45 pm.

Rock St Patrick’s and Moortown St Malachy’s will play the second intermediate match-up of the weekend previous to the showdown between Errgial Ciaran and Coalisland Na Fianna in Pomeroy at 12:30 pm.

Dromore v Trillick

Trillick are aiming for a third final appearance in a row and a second Tyrone SFC title in three years but Dromore, who are searching for their first O’Neill Cup triumph in a decade, stand in their way.

The two sides come into this year’s semi-final after winning their two previous games each.

Dromore beat holders Dungannon Thomas Clarke’s by four points to set up a date with Eglish St Patrick’s.

The three-time Tyrone senior football champions squeezed into the semi-final after beating Eglish by two points.

Trillick, on the other hand, have won both their games with no absence of attacking intent, scoring three goals in each.

They defeated Galbally Pearses by five points, courtesy of two second-half goals that sunk their opponents.

The club then decimated Killyclogher in a resounding quarter-final victory to move into the final four.

A 14-point win with three more goals sent a statement of intent to the other three sides still in the competition.

Errigal Ciaran v Coalisland Na Fianna

Errigal Ciaran, who beat Dromore in the 2012 final, are on the hunt for their first county championship victory since then, and face 2018 winners Coalisland Na Fianna in the process.

2019 finalists Errigal Ciaran have posted two impressive victories in this year’s instalment of the tournament.

A 14-point win over Clonoe O’Rahilly’s and an eight-point quarter-final triumph against Loughmacrory St Teresa’s has underlined the strength of their side this year, complemented by three goals in two games.

Coalisland Na Fianna took down Edendork in the first round in a seven-goal thriller and earned their semi-final spot in a nail-biter against Carrickmore.

The side have not had wins as convincing as those of their opponents and have conceded 11 more points than them.

Where To Watch

The match between Dromore and Trillick will be shown live on RTÉ 2 with coverage starting at 7 pm on Saturday.

The second semi-final between Errgial Ciaran and Coalisland will be available to watch via live stream.

Ulster hooker Bradley Roberts called up to Wales squad

Ulster Rugby hooker Bradley Roberts has been called up to the Wales squad ahead of their Autumn internationals after Ken Owens picked up a back injury.

Roberts is eligible to play for the Wales national team through his paternal grandmother, who came from the town of Llandysul.

The 25-year-old front-rower has made 10 appearances for the Irish province and joins the Wales squad for the first time.

He made his debut for the side when he came on as a replacement in their Pro14 clash against Edinburgh at Murrayfield last season.

Roberts has played in every United Rugby Championship game for Ulster so far this season, with his sole start for the club coming in their opener against Glasgow Warriors at Kingspan Stadium.

The South African-born rugby player also lines out for Energia Men’s All Ireland League side Rainey Old Boys.

Scarlets hooker Owens was initially named in the starting XV to face the All Blacks this weekend but was out of the squad half an hour later.

‘The Sheriff’ had failed a late fitness test on a back problem he had shortly before head coach Wayne Pivac faced the media – Pivac announced the news in his press conference.

Fellow Scarlets hooker Ryan Elias replaces Owens in the starting lineup for Saturday’s game in Cardiff – the first of Wales’ Autumn internationals.

An official announcement on Roberts’ call-up to the Welsh squad reads: “Wales have called on the services of hooker Bradley Roberts, following the announcement of Ken Owens’ back injury.

“The 25-year-old has made 10 appearances for Ulster, most recently as a try-scoring replacement against Connacht last weekend.

“South African born Roberts has represented RGC before moving to Northern Ireland and later joining Ulster for the 2020/21 season.

“Roberts is eligible to play for Wales through his paternal grandmother, who hailed from Llandysul.”

Derry SFC semi-finals – Previews, Where To Watch

The O’Neills Derry Senior Football Championship semi-finals take place this weekend, with Slaughtneil, The Loup, Lavey and Glen all vying for their place in the final of this year’s county championship.

Slaughtneil will face fellow Group C graduates Lavey in the first scheduled semi-final on Saturday, October 30 at 6:45 pm.

The Loup and Glen, winners of Group A and D respectively, will battle it out for the second spot in the final on Halloween – Sunday, October 31 at 2:45 pm.

Both matches will be held at Owenbeg.

Slaughtneil v Lavey

Defending champions Slaughtneil are attempting to win their second John McLaughlin Cup in a row and achieve such a feat for the second time since 2017.

Standing in their way of a second successive appearance in the final is Lavey, who topped their group previous to the start of the knockout phase and put two goals past The Robbies in a three-point win back in September.

Cailean O’Boyle and the Downeys, Enda, Shea, Matthew and Callum, have been effective in attack for the challengers as the young side bring the most momentum into the tie.

Slaughtneil, however, bring the champions mentality into the game and, with the nature of the match taken into account, it can be expected that they will aim to right the wrongs of September and take down possibly their biggest threat to a seventh Derry SFC title.

Shane McGuigan has led the side in attack with his free-taking but their defence has allowed a goal in every game since their loss to Lavey.

Lavey, on the other hand, have only conceded two goals in the championship thus far but both sides have conceded less than 45 points – Lavey have conceded 41 while the champions have allowed 42.

The Loup v Glen

The only survivors of Group A and D have made it to the semi-final stage and will face each other for a spot in the county final.

The winners of Group A, The Loup, have been firing on all cylinders in attack but leaking scores at the back.

The work of the likes of Anthony O’Neill, as well as Ciaran and Cormac Devlin has countered the defence that has allowed five goals in five games, leading to high-scoring matches throughout the Derry Championship.

Glen have a much more impressive defence that has kept opposition scores below ten in all games they have played bar one – Kilrea put 3-8 past the Glen defence but lost in a group game in September.

The side have conceded only 44 points after five games, with 17 of those coming from one game.

Impeccable attacking performances from the likes of Paul Gunning and Danny Tallon have given the side a potent attack that has scored 107 points in just five games – the strongest in Derry.

However, The Loup are only a point behind in their overall attacking output, making this an exciting matchup of the two best attacking sides in the Oak-Leaf County.

Where To Watch

The two semi-finals will be available to watch on live streams, which can be accessed through 247.tv for a fee.

St Eunan’s v Setanta – Donegal SHC Final Preview, Where To Watch

The Michael Murphy Sports Donegal Senior Hurling Championship final will take place this weekend on Saturday, October 30th and will feature St Eunan’s and Setanta once again.

The match will be played at the home ground of Eunan’s, O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny, where the semi-finals were also held.

This will be the third year in a row that the two sides will play each other in the final stage of the county championship.

Setanta are looking to continue their period of dominance in Donegal and stamp out the threat of Eunan’s once again.

The challengers to their crown are hoping that it will be third time lucky as they aim to win their first Donegal senior title since 1972.

The pair earned the right to another rematch after wins over Burt and Buncrana respectively.

Eunan’s beat the record-holders by five points to progress to the final stage to the despair of Burt’s players and staff.

Burt have not reached the final since 2018 and are the last side to beat Setanta in the final, winning their 39th title by two goals.

Setanta brushed aside Buncrana, who could not match their intensity and tempo as they fell to a 20-point loss in Letterkenny.

The defending champions have won all six of their games in this year’s county hurling championship and are yet to see a side they face stay within ten points of them.

The Killygordon club have also only conceded 72 points after six games – an average of 12 points conceded per game.

Eunan’s are another high-scoring side but their defence allowed over 100 points in the round-robin games.

They will need to show that they have improved that facet of their game enough to stop Setanta’s attack from putting a cricket score past them.

Where To Watch

The match will kick-off at 3:30 pm and will be available to watch on a live stream. Alternatively, tickets are available here.

Liverpool v Brighton – Preview, Teams, Odds, Where To Watch

Liverpool welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to Anfield on Saturday after two successive away trips in the Premier League against Watford and Manchester United.

The Reds recorded 5-0 wins over both sides and currently sit a point off the top of the Premier League, proving that last season was an outlier.

Brighton are winless in a month after a strong start and failing to register one at Anfield will extend the streak to five in the league and six in all competitions.

Naby Keita has returned to full training after being the victim of a two-footed tackle from Paul Pogba – a challenge that saw the French substitute walk after just a quarter of an hour on the pitch.

Thiago Alcantara also joined in on Thursday’s session as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.

However, Fabinho’s knee issue will keep him out of the clash with Graham Potter’s Seagulls – it is the third game in a row that Liverpool will not have him at their disposal.

Brighton defender Dan Burn will miss the trip to Merseyside after injuring his knee against Leicester in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie.

Steven Alzate, the goalscorer the last time Brighton were at Anfield, will also be out due to a long-term injury, as will Danny Welbeck.

Teams

Liverpool – Predicted (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Thiago, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mané.

Brighton and Hove Albion – Predicted (3-5-2): Sanchez; Webster, Duffy, Dunk; Lamptey, Moder, Gross, Lallana, Cucurella; Trossard, Maupay.

Odds

Liverpool 1/5

Draw 11/2

Brighton and Hove Albion 10/1
