Cheltenham Gold Cup Preview 2020

The scene is set for a wide-open Cheltenham Gold Cup this year with Al Boum Photo bidding to retain his crown.

No horse has managed to do so since Best Mate completed his hat-trick of wins from 2002 to 2004. 2018 winner Native River will try to emulate Kauto Star who won in 2007, was beaten the following year but returned to win a second Gold Cup in 2009.

Al Boum Photo follows identical path to Cheltenham Gold Cup

Willie Mullins has understandably decided to follow the same path for Al Boum Photo as he did in 2018-19. He won the Savills Chase at Tramore after a 245-day absence and goes to Cheltenham fresh for his title defence. He started at 12-1 last year but stormed to the front on the home turn before going on to win by two and a half lengths.

Bristol De Mai, Native River and Clan Des Obeaux finished third, fourth and fifth with favourite Presenting Percy a remote eighth. All four are likely to renew rivalry this year but Al Boum Photo sets the standard. With five wins from ten starts over fences, the eight-year-old still has scope for improvement and heads the betting market at around 4-1.

Bristol De Mai has been beaten by Lostinstranslation (Betfair Chase) and Santini (Cotswold Chase) where he attempted to make all the running. He was ridden more patiently last year and was able to get some cover in a big field. Native River has enjoyed a couple of routine victories in Grade 2 chases at Aintree and Newbury this season and is still running in the 2020 Grand National. A decision on that race rests with his owners but he has nearly 10 lengths to find on last year’s Gold Cup form.

Presenting Percy has each-way claims

Two-time King George VI Chase winner Clan Des Obeaux would appear to be generously priced at around 8-1 but his stamina remains unproven. He was very impressive at Kempton but did not seem to relish the Cheltenham hill last year and was running on empty in the closing stages. His challenge is likely to be delayed for as long as possible but there are no hiding places at Cheltenham.

Presenting Percy did have excuses last year when finishing lame after only one run over hurdles during the previous 12 months. He has had three runs in Grade 1 chases this season, most recently finishing third to Delta Work in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown. He showed his best form when held up over hurdles and he got to the front too early at Leopardstown. It was certainly an encouraging run and he looks a tempting each-way bet at around 12-1.

Delta Work was a shade unlucky when third to Topofthegame and Santini in last season’s RSA Chase. He has won three of his four subsequent races and it is difficult to find fault with his length and a half victory over Kemboy last time. Gordon Elliott won this race with Don Cossack (2016) and is very hopeful he can repeat the performance with Delta Work.

Santini still has plenty to prove

Nicky Henderson’s Santini is vying for favouritism with several bookmakers, despite making hard work of beating Bristol De Mai. That was his first race since wind surgery in November and Nico de Boinville had to earn his riding fee that day. Santini is closely matched with Delta Work on RSA Chase form but will need to be a lot sharper than he was last time.

There are also question marks over Lostinstranslation, pulled up in the King George on Boxing Day. He had been promoted to ante-post favourite for the Gold Cup following his impressive win in the Betfair Chase but was pulled up at Kempton. A breathing problem was diagnosed and he has not raced since.

Monalee looks the best of the outsiders, beaten only a head by Delta Work in December but currently priced at 25-1. He was no match for Presenting here as a novice and found the Ryanair Chase too short for him last year. The Cheltenham Festival runs from 10th to 13th March with the first five races televised live on ITV each day.

Tipperary come into this game following the postponement of last weekends fixture with Galway. Liam Sheedy’s men have played 2 games and lost two games so far so a win here is vital. They lost out to Limerick 2-14 to 0-18, while they also suffered a loss to Cork at Pairc Ui Chaoimh 2-24 to 1-25. Tipperary will look to players like Padraic Maher and Ronan Maher in defence, while players like Seamus Callanan, John McGrath and Jake Morris in attack.

Westmeath come into the game with 3 losses from 3 games. They have suffered losses to Galway (1-24 to 0-10), Waterford (3-18 to 1-15) and last weekend they lost out Cork by 3-12 to 1-14. Shane O’Brien speaking after that game to RTE Sunday Sport said, “It was a game that got away from us, there’s no doubt about it”. He continued, “We are immensely proud of the performance the lads put in. We have a very ambitious group.” Players like Aonghus Clarke, Allan Devine and Eoin Price will need to have big games if the Lake County are to have any chance of coming away with points.

Limerick come into this game after a postponed game last weekend with Waterford. They have two wins from two games however. They have beaten Tipperary 2-14 to 0-18 and they also beat Galway 1-19 to 0-14. John Kiely’s side are in form but they will face a difficult task here against a strong Cork side. He will look to players like Graeme Mulcahy, Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane to spur his side on to victory which will likely see them into a quarter-final at the very least even at this early stage.

Cork come into the game on the back of a win over Westmeath last weekend. They needed 2-08 from Pat Horgan from placed balls to steer a win in their favour in the end. Previous to that they beat Tipperary, however, they lost out to Waterford in the opening. Kieran Kingston speaking to the Evening Echo following that game said, “We always knew it was going to be a battle and that’s the way it turned out to be”. He continued, “We could have pushed on a bit more and we made a lot of simple errors, you can’t blame the weather for all of those either”.

Both sides are even steven on points coming into this game. Dublin have played three gaes winning two and losing one. They suffered a heavy loss to Kilkenny on the opening weekend, however they followed that up with wins over Laois and Carlow where they won 0-20 to 0-09 last weekend. Dublin will look to players like Oisin O’Rorke, Rian McBride, Eoghan O’Donnell and Sean Moran

Davy Fitzgerald side are also in flying form. They will prove a tough nut to crack here again. They have 2 wins from 3 games also. The loss coming narrowly to Clare, while they recorded wins over Laois and most recent a 1-16 to 1-14 win over Kilkenny. Speaking after the game Davy said, “We’re delighted to get the victory,”. He continued, “The way we used the ball, and our composure in the last 7 or 8 minutes was very good, I thought”. “Every game to me is important. I was asked could I get to a league semi-final or final, and I honestly don’t look at it like that”. Players like Conor McDonald, Kevin Foley and Liam Ryan will be key here once again.

Team News

Dublin: Sean Brennan, Paddy Smyth, Eoghan O’Donnell, James Madden, Cian O’Callaghan, Daire Gray, Sean Moran, Chris Crummey, Jake Malone, Donal Burke, Rian McBride, John Hetherton, Oisin O’Rorke, Ronan Hayes, Dave Keogh

Wexford: Mark Fanning; Conor Firman, Liam Ryan, Joe O’Connor; Damien Reck, Paudie Foley, Shaun Murphy; Kevin Foley, Diarmuid O’Keeffe; Aidan Rochford, Aidan Nolan, Jack O’Connor; Paul Morris, Michael Dwyer, Rory O’Connor.

Betting

Wexford are 8/13 favourites with Dublin at 13/8. Wexford for me are in top form and I expect them to win by 3 or 4 points here. Dublin v Wexford is live on Eir Sport at 5pm. If you can’t make it though follow our updates.

Altior, Epatante and Santini head Nicky Henderson team

Altior, Epatante and Santini headline Nicky Henderson’s contenders for the championship races at the Cheltenham festival 2020.

Henderson is the second most successful trainer in history at The Festival with 64 winners, one behind great rival Willie Mullins, and has been the leading trainer at the meeting nine times. If you are looking to find the latest betting offers for Cheltenham head to BettingLounge.co.uk

Altior is aiming for a third successive victory in the £400,000 G1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase over two miles, a feat achieved only once before by Badsworth Boy in 1983, 1984, 1985.

Now a 10-year-old, Altior tasted his first defeat over obstacles when stepped up in trip to two miles and five furlongs in the G2 1965 Chase at Ascot in November, but bounced back with a dominant victory back at two miles in the G2 Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on 8 February.

Altior is unbeaten in four starts at The Festival, having also captured the G1 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle in 2016 and the G1 Racing Post Arkle Novices’ Chase in 2017.

Speaking from his Seven Barrows Stables in Lambourn stables this morning, Henderson said: “All is going well with Altior. He has been ticking over since Newbury and will have a couple of schools before Cheltenham. I seldom school him but I think he just enjoys it.

“If we take Newbury as Altior’s first run of the season, which you have to really, it was perfect. If you were coming into the Tingle Creek or something on the back of that, you would say we are absolutely spot on.

“The disaster was the first run of the year – in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong ground over the wrong trip. I could not have made a worse job of it if I had tried! If it wasn’t for the hype and build up around the race, I should have really been the spoilt sport and taken him out on the morning of the race. But you couldn’t. It would have been a walkover and Ascot would not have been very happy with me, nor would the rest of the world.

“I paid the penalty for running him because it took him until Newbury to get over it. In fairness, I think Paul [Nicholls] says the same thing with Cyrname. It was a bruising race we had at Ascot, both having our first run of the season. Had they run before it in a prep race, I suspect both of them would have been all right. Altior was exhausted and there was no question of him running at Christmas.

“It looks a seriously good Champion Chase and should be a big battle. Altior is certainly fresh and well now, and the better ground, the better he will be. I suspect Defi Du Seuil and Chacun Pour Soi probably handle softer ground better than we do, although Altior has won on soft ground. You saw at Newbury how Altior can change gear. You have to ask the question, and once Nico (de Boinville, jockey) did, he answered very quickly.”

Altior is the 2/1 favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase with sponsor Betway.

Paul O’Connell to play in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro-Am

With just 100 days to go until the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open kicks off at Mount Juliet Estate, Irish rugby legend Paul O’Connell is the first Irish sports star confirmed to take part in the Pro-Am. The Pro-Am will take place on Wednesday 27th May, ahead of the second Rolex Series event of the 2020 Race to Dubai.

The tournament returns to Mount Juliet Estate from May 27-31 and will be hosted by 2010 U.S. Open winner and Portrush native Graeme McDowell.

Paul O’Connell said;

“I played in last year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro-Am at Lahinch and everything about it was brilliant. The sun shone all day, my son Paddy caddied for me and my golf wasn’t too bad so I’m delighted to be back again this year.

Hopefully this year is a little easier as we don’t have the Atlantic sea breeze to contend with. I’m really looking forward to playing the course at Mount Juliet Estate. I’ve played it a few times previously and it’s just beautiful.”

2019 Open champion Shane Lowry will join host McDowell at Mount Juliet Estate and make his first appearance on home soil since claiming his maiden major title when he competes at this year’s Dubai Duty Irish Open.

Further player announcements and the rest of the Pro-Am line-up will be announced over the coming weeks.

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open takes place from the 27th to the 31st May. Tickets are available from www.dubaidutyfreeirishopen.com.
