Johnny Sexton Closing In On O’Gara’s Ireland Record

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton is edging closer to Ronan O’Gara’s record for the most points scored for the national team in Test rugby. O’Gara, who played for Ireland between 2000 and 2013 as a fly-half, leads the way with 1,083 points.

After Ireland’s mauling of Japan, Sexton was up to 941 points. The skipper of the national team looks set to surpass O’Gara in 2022 or 2023, as long as he stays injury free. The 36-year-old celebrated his 100th cap for the national team during that 60-5 victory over Japan in the Autumn international.

Sexton has no plans to retire from international rugby any time soon. He signed a one-year extension to his contract with the Irish Rugby Football Union earlier this year. This means he is signed up to play until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Following the fixtures in November, attention will turn to the 2022 Six Nations which begins in February. Ireland are third best in the rugby union outright betting for the trophy at 4/1. They have not prevailed in that competition since 2018, the year they won the Grand Slam.

Sexton has scored 496 points during the Six Nations. He is fourth on the all-time list behind O’Gara (557), Jonny Wilkinson (546) and Owen Farrell (500). The Irishman looks set to be involved in a great battle with Farrell for the top spot in the standings in 2022 as they chase down O’Gara’s record.

2023 World Cup A Goal For Sexton

The next World Cup in international rugby will come in 2023 in France and Sexton has expressed his desire to play in that tournament. That is sure to be his last appearance at a World Cup if he does represent Ireland.

Playing until the 2023 World Cup also increases Sexton’s chance of breaking O’Gara’s points tally, it could also see him go a long way clear of the current record. By the time the tournament comes around, Sexton will be 38 years old.

Ireland, with Sexton in their squad, have been eliminated at the quarter final stage at the last three World Cup tournaments. They were beaten by New Zealand in 2019 in a one-sided game which finished 46-14.

Since they first appeared at the World Cup in 1989, Ireland have yet to advance past the last eight. They will be hoping to put that right in 2023. With the tournament set to be held in Europe, it gives them advantage over the southern hemisphere teams.

The 2018 World Rugby Player of the Year captained Ireland at the 2019 World Cup which would have been a huge honour for him. If he can help Ireland have their best ever performance at the tournament in 2023, it will be some way to bow out.

Ireland are 14/1 in the outright betting for the 2023 World Cup. Head coach Andy Farrell has just under two years to prepare for that event. There is a lot of rugby to be played before then so plenty of opportunities for players to impress Farrell.

Sexton is already a legend of Irish rugby. He looks set to break numerous records before he retires and with O’Gara’s points tally in his sight, that may be the next to go his way.

How the Champions League group stages are shaping up for the English sides

The European football season has once again been halted due to another international break, with the remaining 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers set to bring the groups to an to end and ultimately decide the fate of several nations over the course of the next couple of weeks.

When club football eventually resumes in mid-November there is going to be a lot to play for in the Champions League. The majority of teams are still fighting for their place in the knockout rounds, while others will have their sights set on finishing third and ensuring that their European journey continues in the Europa League.

That said, read on as we take a look at how the Champions League group stages are looking at this stage of the competition.

Group A – Manchester City

One of the favourites to win the tournament in the latest Champions League winner odds, Manchester City are in command in Group A. A victory over Paris Saint-Germain will seal their place in the round of 16 as group winners, while they will also progress if they lose and Club Brugge don’t get the better of RB Leipzig.

If results don’t go in their favour in gameweek five, they will still likely go through as Club Brugge would need to beat both PSG and Leipzig, while City will need to lose both of their remaining games.

The French giants look to be rather safe in second, but it will be interesting to see how the battle for that Europa League spot pans out between Brugge and Leipzig.

1st: Man City – 9

2nd: PSG – 8

3rd: Club Brugge – 4

4th: RB Leipzig – 1

Group B – Liverpool

Deemed the ‘Group of Death’ when Group B was drawn back in August, Liverpool fans must have been dreading the prospect of having to go toe-to-toe with three European heavyweights in the form of Atlético Madrid, Porto and AC Milan.

However, Jürgen Klopp’s side, who won the tournament for a sixth time in 2019, have breezed their way through the group and have already secured their place in the round of 16 as group winners with four wins from four.

Second place looks set to be a two-horse between Porto and Atléti, but Milan can still progress as well — albeit needing a miracle as they currently only have one point.

1st: Liverpool – 12

2nd: Porto – 5

3rd: Atlético Madrid – 4

4th: AC Milan – 1

Group F – Manchester United

Manchester United may be sitting top of Group F after four matches, but their place in the round of 16 is far from confirmed as this group looks set to go down to the wire.

The Red Devils are joint-level on points (7) will Villarreal and Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s men will head to El Madrigal in Spain for a crucial top-of-the-table encounter in the next round of fixtures — where a defeat could see them drop down to third should Atalanta beat Young Boys.

Luckily, Man United round the group off with a home tie against the Swiss Super League side and with Atalanta and Villarreal having to go head-to-head, it is likely that the Old Trafford outfit will pick up the three points against Young Boys and feature in the round of 16. Nothing is to be taken for granted though, anything can still happen in this group!

1st: Manchester United – 7

2nd: Villarreal – 7

3rd: Atalanta – 5

4th: Young Boys – 3

Group H – Chelsea

Chelsea’s place in the round of the 16 may not be fully confirmed yet, but the defending European champions already have one foot in the first knockout round. The Blues’ only blemish in the Champions League this season was a 1-0 defeat away to Juventus, who are already in the next round, and with the Italians up next at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have the opportunity to strike revenge and book their place in the round of 16 — a draw will also do Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Malmö, who are bottom of the group with zero points, need to beat Zenit at home in their next game if they want to stay in contention for the Europa League spot, while the Russian side will take that place with a draw or a win in Sweden. If Zenit pick up three points at the Eleda Stadium and Chelsea lose to Juve, they will go head-to-head with the Premier League side for second at the Gazprom Arena.

However, with Chelsea needing just one point from the remaining two matches, it looks extremely unlikely that the west London side are going to exit the Champions League in the group stages.

1st: Juventus – 12

2nd: Chelsea – 9

3rd: Zenit – 3

4th: Malmö – 0

Ireland women’s rugby are back in action after their heartbreak in Parma. The side was narrowly beaten and missed out on qualification for the upcoming World Cup in New Zealand.

PSG midfielder Aminata Diallo arrested for organising assault on team mate

PSG midfielder Aminata Diallo arrested for assault on club’s players

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Aminata Diallo has been arrested in relation to attempting to physically harm one of her teammates on the women’s side.

The 26-year old is now in custody over the attack on teammate Kheira Hamraoui last Thursday evening.

PSG have come out saying that the apparent attack occurred on Thursday evening, with Diallo being taken into custody by Versailles Police on Wednesday morning.

Reports have suggested that the assaulted player (Kheira Hamraoui) was approached by two masked men while she was exiting her car, they proceeded to punch and hit her legs at the orders of Diallo.

Reports have suggested that the reasoning for the attack was Diallo wanting PSG and France teammate Hamraoui injured so that competition for a starting place would ultimately go to her as the pair play in the same position.

Diallo started in PSG’S UWCL match vs. Real Madrid yesterday, where the French side came out 4-0 victors. Hamraoui was not in the squad.

The club (PSG) released a statement on Wednesday that read;

“Paris Saint-Germain can confirm that Aminata Diallo was taken into custody this morning by the Versailles Regional Police Service as part of the proceedings opened following an attack on the club’s players last Thursday evening.

“Paris Saint-Germain condemns in the strongest possible terms the violence committed.

“Since Thursday evening the club has taken all necessary measures to guarantee the health, well-being and safety of its entire women’s team.

“Paris Saint-Germain is working with the Versailles Police to clarify the facts. The club is paying close attention to the progress of the proceedings and will study what action to take.”

The 26-year-old Diallo has been capped seven times for France since her senior international debut in 2017. Joining PSG in 2016 where she has made over 60 appearances for Les Parisiens. She spent time on loan at Atletico Madrid for much of last season.

Ireland v Portugal – Preview, Betting, Probable Starting Teams

Ireland welcomes Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to Dublin this week as they look for revenge for last month’s defeat

Ireland v Portugal will kick off at 19:45 on Thursday 11th November in the Aviva Stadium.

Most of the tickets for this game were sold out within minutes of them being on sale online. For those who could not claim a ticket, the match will also be shown live on RTE 2 and RTE player with coverage starting at 19:00.

Stephen Kenny has changed Ireland’s fortunes in recent months. After a poor start to his campaign, they are now unbeaten four games and have shown real promise in front of goal.

The Boys in Green still sit in fourth place in the group behind Luxembourg and are unable to qualify from the group. After this tie with Portugal, they will travel to the small nation of Luxembourg for what seems like a more important game for Kenny’s regime.

If Kenny thought Ireland’s form was good then Fernando Santos has been making a monstrous squad out of Portugal. Since being knocked out of Euro 2020 to Belgium, they have won five games on the bounce, keeping three clean sheets.

The World number eight-country currently sit in second place in the World Cup qualification group. They only sit one point off Serbia but have a single game in hand. Even though the Portuguese will want to win against Ireland, they will keep one eye on their fixture against the Serbians this Sunday in Lisbon.

Ireland have very few opportunities to play Ronaldo and Portugal, having only faced them twice in the last 10 years. Both times, the Portuguese squad came out on top, first 5-1 in 2014, and most recently they made a 2-1 comeback at the start of September.

Ireland v Portugal Match Betting

Ireland to win: 9/1

Draw: 15/4

Portugal to win: 3/10

Score Prediction

It would feel blasphemous to bet against the Boys in Green but it would be a major shock to see Kenny’s young men overcome the world-class side aiming to top this qualifying group. Recent form at least shows that Ireland will be spirited and give Ronaldo’s team a real go for it.

Expect the game to end 2-1 to Portugal.

Ruby Walsh names 10 horses to follow ahead of National Hunt Season

Ruby Walsh has named his ten horses to follow ahead of the upcoming National Hunt Season in a YouTube video by Racing TV.

The former jockey has given his tips on the horses he thinks will bring success in the coming months.

Walsh’s picks include five horses trained by Willie Mullins, with several recent race winners included.

Energumene, Chacun Pour Soi, Appreciate It and Echoes in Rain, who have all picked up wins in Ireland during the 2021 season, are shortlisted by the Irish pundit as ones to watch.

Also on his list is Kilcruit, a six-year-old horse, who the list maker tips to be the “outstanding novice hurdler.”

Three other trainers are represented on the list – Henry De Bromhead, Gordon Elliott and Philip Hobbs all have horses tipped by Walsh to succeed.

Honeysuckle, a horse who won the Champions Hurdle at Cheltenham with 2021 Irish Racing Hero Rachael Blackmore, is named as one to watch.

Walsh notes that the decision to pick Honeysuckle was easy as he believes that the horse “has been high on everyone’s list.”

Blackmore and De Bromhead’s 2019 Cheltenham race winners A Plus Tard and Minella Indo also make an appearance.

The final two horses on Walsh’s radar are Gordon Elliott’s Fil Dor and Philip Hobbs’ Thyme Hill, who he puts among esteemed company.

Three-year-old Fil Dor is the latest racing horse trained by Gordon Elliott to come onto the scene and Walsh expects a big season for the latest in the production line.

Hobbs will be aiming for another win with Thyme Hill, who has achieved success with Tom O’Brien and Richard Johnson in the last three years.

Ireland Women’s Qualifier group down to four as PNG withdraws

The group Ireland will play in in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2021 has been reduced to four as Papua New Guinea have withdrawn because they are unable to send a team due to several members of the squad testing positive for COVID-19.

PNG were to take on defending champions the West Indies on the opening day of the tournament, which runs from 21 November to 5 December across four venues in Harare.

There will be no replacement for PNG in Group A, which includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, the Netherlands and the West Indies.

The five-team Group B comprises Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, Zimbabwe and the United States.

ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley said: “Obviously we’re incredibly disappointed not to be able to welcome PNG to the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier, but they have been unable to field a team because a number of the squad have contracted COVID-19.

“The safety of the players and everyone involved in our events is paramount and we will go ahead with the tournament maintaining our bio-security standards.

“I really feel for the PNG players, who have been preparing extensively for this event and for whom it would have been a wonderful experience playing against several top sides in Harare, with the opportunity to qualify for the Women’s World Cup and the next round of the ICC Women’s Championship.

“We hope that they are back playing international cricket soon and continue to develop as a team.”

The Zimbabwe event is an important one on the calendar as it decides three qualifiers for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 to be held in New Zealand from 4 March to 3 April, joining five teams who have already qualified through the ICC Women’s Championship – Australia, England, India, South Africa and hosts New Zealand.

The three qualifiers as well as the next two teams will also ensure places in the next ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) along with the top five from last time, as the number of teams in the third cycle of the IWC goes up from eight to 10 teams.

5 Christmas Present Ideas for a Rugby Fan

With the recent return of the 6 Nations and the upcoming Autumn Nations Cup, rugby fever is taking hold this winter. As a result, rugby gifts will be a popular choice this festive season. Here are 5 Christmas present ideas for a rugby fan.

Rugby World Cup Replica Jerseys.

For every World Cup, each team wears a jersey specifically designed for the competition. With the World Cup being last year and those jerseys now not being worn anymore, they’re available for great prices. Unlike jerseys in soccer and gaa, rugby jerseys do not go out of style as quickly and jerseys from past seasons are no way out of place a couple of years after their release.

There were some lovely jerseys on display in Japan last year. ProDirect Rugby have a lot of the countries’ World Cup Jerseys available. Due to the World Cup being over a year ago, they’re available cheaper than the jerseys you’ll find teams wearing now.

Ireland’s jersey was one of the sleeker on show. But, New Zealand’s and Australia’s efforts were eye-catching too. In fact, even jerseys from the likes of Italy or Tonga are nice additions to any collection. There might be a Black Friday sports sale and offers

UCL: Teams That Are Off to A Perfect Start

UCL: Teams That Are Off to A Perfect Start

It’s that time again! The UEFA Champions League is on, and some teams are looking ready to take the title. Even though it is still in group stages, it is safe to say that some of the contenders this time around are serious about winning! Betting on the underdogs might prove to be in your favor in this tournament, with Juventus currently off to a perfect start – amongst other teams less known for winning as much as their talented individual players.

UEFA Fever

The UCL is easily the most popular sporting event in terms of the mix of soccer league teams in a tournament. The most exciting teams in the world come to try to prove their team’s superiority, often ending up with heated games, so it makes sense that it’s one of the most viewed sporting events every single time. Carry on reading to get up to speed on the event so far!

Ajax

More underdog talk. Ajax is by no means historically a lousy team, but right now, they’re proving to be an excellent one! The force from Amsterdam has had a perfect winning streak with their very own Sèbastian Haller on top of the goal board with six goals to his name in three games. Their team often dominates in their own league back home, but their current performance is out of the ordinary for them in the UEFA setting. This fact does not discredit them as an impeccable soccer club. They have won all of the competitions the UEFA offers and are among the best teams in the world. It seems they are doing so well again that Liverpool is interested in poaching one of their players by letting their interest be known publicly.

AFC Ajax has been putting out a high level of football for as long as anyone can really remember, and they are still a force to be reckoned with and will continue to dominate the UEFA table. The Netherlands never seems to disappoint when it comes to soccer, and this club maintains the image of high-class footballing. Dortmund will be looking for revenge, so keep an eye out on the third of November, where Dortmund will try to revert their poor performance in the first encounter – where they conceded four goals without even scoring one.

Juventus

It seems like even without Christiano Ronaldo, Juventus continues to be the powerhouse they’ve always been. The Italian league team is amongst the teams off to an absolutely brilliant start having secured three wins. Their teamwork and overall chemistry seem to be taking them to the top of their group at a rapid rate. Their defense in this championship seems impenetrable, with them still not having conceded a goal. They seem to be Chelsea’s main competition as they are the only team Chelsea could not steamroll in their group. UEFA seems to rank them as the fifth-best team in the world but let’s see after this competition where they will be placed.

They are one of Italy’s oldest teams, and they have seen the most success in their time which makes it less of a surprise that they are off to such a perfect start. Inconsistency used to plague the Italian teams, but they have been able to tidy up nicely. Man United recently acquired Ronaldo and, to everyone’s surprise, are not off to a perfect start. Juventus are proving to the world that they do not need a star player like Ronaldo (who actually seems to be causing some trouble recently) when they have got good teamwork, talent, and chemistry. They clearly still have enough capable finishers!

Liverpool

You’ll never walk alone with Liverpool. You need to realize that their perfect start is no surprise. Despite their inconsistency in their own league, they seem to dominate the UEFA, often being tied with Bayern Munich for the third-most wins in the UCL’s history. For the last couple of years, Liverpool has been coming back strong with only a tiny patch of inconsistent matches. They are back and terrorizing this league with the man himself – Salah – scoring the second-most goals so far with five to his name in three games and the team scoring eleven goals in total in their three games.

This English team is showing their presence early, acting as an unbeatable force. When they meet the other teams that are off to a perfect start, however, things will ramp up. This year has brought the highest class of football. They have got so much more than talent up their sleeves with arguably the best coach in the business and a stellar team dynamic that has shown their chemistry to be at a constant growing peak – truly honing in on those words “you’ll never walk alone.”

Bayern Munich

As you know, the most feared German team is amongst the teams that take the title the most often. This season they continue to strengthen their reputation with not only having no losses, goals conceded, and over ten goals in three games, but they have also got Lewandowski representing them – scoring five goals to his name, putting him on this Champions League’s list of top scorers tied for second. In Germany, they prove to be the most successful team by no close measure, and it comes naturally to them wherever they are. Their soccer is truly on another level, especially with them having one of the greatest goalkeepers making it considerably easier for them to focus on being aggressive and creating pressure.

These German teams often consist mainly of Germans, making their chemistry and dynamic far easier to build into an airtight working system. Many of the players have known each other for years, and having fewer language barriers will always make for better communication. Considering soccer is a team sport, this good communication heavily impacts the performance and chemistry between all the players of a team. Not to mention, German people seem to really support and love soccer. It is encouraged from a young age, so they have an endless amount of homegrown talent!
