Ireland captain Balbirnie: ‘We are moving in the right direction’

The Ireland Men’s national cricket team were knocked out of the T20 World Cup in the group stages by Namibia but captain Andrew Balbirnie maintains that the team are improving.

Ireland lost to Namibia by eight wickets in a ‘winner-takes-all’ clash which sees them bow out of the tournament after two consecutive losses.

The opponents took eight wickets off of Balbirnie’s team and the Irish bowlers could not keep Gerhard Erasmus and David Wiese at bay.

Balbirnie spoke at the post-match press conference on Friday and put his trust in the Ireland squad after failing to reach the Super 12.

“At the end of the day, it’s only a game,” the Ireland captain said. “We’re bitterly disappointed and the guys are bitterly disappointed back home but we are moving in the right direction, I feel.

“We’ve got a good, young squad who are hungry to learn. It wasn’t our day today, and so be it.

“We’ve had some great days in the last couple of years and today wasn’t one of them but, yeah look, fair play to Namibia and the way they played today.”

Ireland slowed down after a strong Powerplay courtesy of Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien and Namibia held them to 125 runs over the 20 overs, taking eight wickets to lessen their power.

Wiese and captain Erasmus played brilliantly for Namibia once again as they recorded their second win in a row.

The men in green could not stop Erasmus as he posted an unbeaten half-century, leading the charge for the African nation.

However, Balbirnie praised the performances of his team’s bowlers throughout the T20 World Cup.

“They have had a superb week. Josh [Little] certainly has been the leader of the pack but he has been brilliantly backed up by Curtis [Campher], Mark [Adair] and Craig [Young].

“Craig obviously missed the first game and came back and bowled really well in the second game.

“So yeah, we have a good bit of depth in our seam attack now. We’ve got to bring it altogether whenever we play these big games and put in that performance that warrants getting into the next phase, and I think our performance today doesn’t do that and that’s the disappointing thing – we’re gonna go back disappointed in the way we performed.”

He believes that the team can only grow from their experience at the World Cup this year and noted that he sees them improving every day.

“Our T20 cricket has been inconsistent and it has been a big issue and you can say this tournament has been inconsistent for us but guys are improving – I’ve seen it day in, day out.

“They’re a young and inexperienced squad and they’re gonna learn from this. They’re gonna hurt from this of course, like all of us but we’ve gotta keep moving forward and keep trying to adapt our game.

“We came up short today, but I know the guys, once we have a week or two off back home, will want to improve their skills so that [when] the next time comes round, they’ll be better for it.”

Chelsea v Norwich – Preview, Betting, Probable Starting Teams

The top faces the bottom in week nine of the Premier League as Chelsea welcomes newly promoted Norwich to London

Chelsea v Norwich will kick off at 12:30 on Saturday, 23rd October in Stamford Bridge. Referee Andrew Madley will take charge of the tie.

Manager Thomas Tuchel is happy to have his squad in victorious form. The Premier League leaders gave Sweden champions Malmo FF a firm thrashing in the Champions League midweek but could now be without two of their main forwards, Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku.

Even with some missing, they still rank as second in the league away from home and second in goals per match. The team will now need players like Kai Havertz and Mason Mount to fill in.

On the other side of the pitch, Norwich have only managed two draws in their eight matches this season. Still, after this terrible start, a shock win would put Daniel Farke’s team up into 18th place.

Forwards Milot Rashica and Teemu Pukki will be the Canary’s only chance at finding a goal this week even though the club only has two goals in total this season.

This is the perfect match for Chelsea to keep their winning run going and improve their goal difference. The Blues have not lost any of their last 12 games, winning eight and drawing four.

Norwich to win: 15/1

Score Prediction

Tuchel can take this game easily, this game seems set in stone before kick-off. Only eight games in and there are already 17 points between the teams. Even with the injury concerns in Stamford Bridge, the Blues’ squad depth should be enough to overcome a weak Norwich team.

Expect Chelsea to win the match 5-0.

Ireland v Wales – Preview, Teams, Where To Watch

The Ireland Men’s national hockey team will play Wales on Saturday, October 23 for a spot in the 2023 Men’s FIH World Cup.

The two teams will meet each other in the semi-final of the European qualifier – both finalists will go to India in two years time.

France and Austria will go head-to-head in the other semi-final for the second spot in the next World Cup.

Ireland reached the semi-final after a two-goal win over Russia, with both goals coming from Benjamin Walker, who is currently one of the joint-top scorers in the qualifier.

Wales’ Gareth Furlong had the same effect on his side as his brace brought them past Italy and they are now one game away from a competition they have never reached – a game they play in the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

Ireland, on the other hand, are on a quest to reach their fourth World Cup and their second in a row after appearing at the 2018 instalment, also held in India.

Mark Tumilty’s side are 60 minutes away from achieving the goal of qualification but face a Wales team on the rise.

They recently moved up seven places in the World rankings to 18th, five behind the Irish, and have taken part in the top tier of the EuroHockey Championship for the past two tournaments.

The winner will play in India next year but the losers will not get another chance to qualify – it all comes down to this for Ireland and Wales.

Teams

Ireland: Carr (GK), Cross, McKee, Marshall, O’Donoghue, Murray (C), Duncan, Robson, Walker, Harte, Cole.

Subs: Ingram (GK), Madeley, Walsh, Glassey, McKibbin, Empey, Hyland.

Ireland v Belarus – Preview, Teams, Where To Watch

The Ireland Women’s national hockey team will play Belarus on Saturday, October 23 in the semi-final of the European qualifier for the 2022 Women’s FIH World Cup.

Ireland moved onto the semi-finals after a 4-1 win over France yesterday in their first game of the tournament.

Roisin Upton, Anna O’Flanagan, Zara Malseed and debutant Niamh Carey got the goals for the Green Army as they marched onto the last four.

Upton said after the game that it was crucial to follow the plan despite the first half frustrations and it paid dividends.

“It’s something we talked about, sticking to the process no matter how long the game went on at 0-0, or even if we concede,” the Limerick woman said.

“We were really pleased we stuck to the plan and broke through. We knew we needed to win corners; the execution in the first half wasn’t so good so we had to pick it up and nail it. Getting on the scoresheet early in the second half settled everyone.”

Belarus put seven past Russia to earn a date with the World Cup silver medalists and move one game closer to reaching the competition for the first time in their history.

Darya Belavusava netted a hattrick in the rout and will be on the search for more as she and the rest of the team aim for new heights.

Ireland needs to win against the Belarusians and then also succeed in Sunday’s final to assure passage to next summer’s competition.

Teams

Ireland: McFerran (GK), M. Carey, Upton, Mullan (C), Tice, McLoughlin, Watkins, Torrans, Hawkshaw, O’Flanagan, N. Carey.

Subs: Murphy (GK), Getty, Malseed, Carroll, Duke, Curran, McAuley.

Ospreys v Munster – Preview, Starting Teams, Betting, Where to Watch

The Stags left it late to beat Connacht and continue their winning run, next up they face one of Wales’ best in Ospreys

Ospreys v Munster will kick off at 19:35 on Saturday 23rd October in the Swansea.com Stadium in Wales. Referee Hollie Davidson will take charge of the match while Mike Adamson will be on TMO.

Munster will head to Wales with their tails up after a late 20-18 win over Connacht maintained their 100 percent winning start to the season.

Beaten finalists last term, Munster has triumphed in their last 11 matches against the Ospreys in all competitions since a defeat in Cork in February 2016.

The Stags will also be boosted by the long-awaited return of some of their international players, Conor Murray and Damien De Allende.

The Ospreys survived a Benetton fightback to claim a third victory in four matches but have won only twice in eight meetings against Irish provinces.

They have also beaten an Irish opponent just once at this stadium since April 2018 while Munster has prevailed on their last five visits.

Leeds v Wolves – Preview, Betting, Probable Starting Teams

Marcelo Bielsa will want to continue his winning form as Leeds welcome Wolves to Yorkshire in round nine of the Premier League

Leeds v Wolves will kick off at 15:00 on Saturday, 23rd October in Elland Road. Referee Robert Jones will take charge of the tie.

The match will also be shown live on Premier Sports ROI 2 with coverage starting at 14:30.

Leeds have had many problems this year; their injury concerns have been compounded with a lack of threat in front of goal. They currently rank in 15th for goals scored this season with less than a goal per game (0.9).

The side now sits in 17th place, three points off the relegation zone after their loss away to Southampton. The Whites’ only bright hope this year has been their 21-year-old keeper Ilan Meslier.

Wolves are finally back to form with the help of their talismanic forward Raul Jiminez. They sit in 10th place having not lost in their last four away games.

Last week they made the comeback of the season after coming back from 2-0 to win away to Aston Villa with goals in the 80th, 85th, and 90+5 minutes. This hunger and passion could prove important again this week.

Both teams have followed very similar paths in recent years after being promoted after years of obscurity in the Championship. Their exciting teams have shown frailties this year and they will be needing three points from this game.

In their last 13 meetings stretching back to 2010, Wolves have won seven and Leeds have won five. Last season, Wolves won both ties 1-0, home and away.

Leeds v Wolves Probable Starting Teams

Leeds United

Leeds v Wolves Match Betting

Leeds United to win: 6/4

Wolverhampton Wanderers to win: 7/4

Score Prediction

This will be a very close, tense affair where the Whites will need their crowd’s support for any chance of winning. There is no doubt that a lot will rest on the young Meslier’s shoulders as shots will rain in.

Expect this game to end 1-1 with both sides sharing the points.

Man United v Liverpool – Preview, Probable Teams, Odds, Where To Watch

Liverpool will travel down the M62 on Sunday to face their greatest rivals for the first time this season – Manchester United.

Liverpool are coming into the game unbeaten so far this season but with several shaky moments on record.

Matches against Brentford and Atletico Madrid have underlined the defensive frailties that Liverpool have when their midfield is ineffective.

Yet, they remain one of the early title-chasers and will aim to be in a similar situation by the end of the season, making games like this extremely important.

Manchester United have had a rough time in the Premier League in the last few weeks with two losses and a draw in their last three games.

However, their last game is a morale-boosting comeback win over Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League and the team will hope to continue on from that.

Liverpool will be the toughest opponent they have faced all season and, with poor results against worse teams in recent memory, could be an uphill battle for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the squad.

Alisson and Fabinho will be available for the match after missing last week’s 5-0 win over Watford.

The pair played against Atletico Madrid after quarantining in Spain so that they could play in the match.

The game is likely to come too soon for Thiago Alcantara, though – the Spain international continues to recover from a calf injury.

The Spaniard has missed six games since picking up an injury and is set to miss a seventh this weekend but Klopp is hopeful that Curtis Jones can return.

Both Marcus Rashford and Fred appeared to sustain knocks during United’s game with Atalanta.

Raphael Varane continues to be sidelined after hurting his groin while with France but his international colleague Anthony Martial has been back in training this week and looks to be pushing for inclusion in the matchday squad.

Amad Diallo is edging closer to fitness but Ole has revealed he expects the Ivory Coast to get an Under-23s outing before being considered for the first team again.

Teams

Manchester United – Probable: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay, Pogba; Rashford, Fernandes, Greenwood; Ronaldo.

Liverpool – Probable: Alisson; Trent, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mané.

Odds

Manchester United 2/1

Draw 5/2

Liverpool 6/5

Where To Watch

The match will kick-off at 4:30 pm and will be available to watch on Sky Sports Football and Sky Sports Main Event as part of Super Sunday.

Connacht v Ulster – Preview, Team News, Odds, Where To Watch

Ulster maintained their perfect start to the season by beating the Emirates Lions and next face an Irish interprovincial derby with Connacht at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

This will be the second interprovincial of the season, after Connacht’s loss to Munster at Thomond Park last week.

Dan McFarland’s side have reeled off four successive bonus-point wins but they have failed to win on their previous five visits to this venue and have also lost their last five games against fellow Irish provinces – a record they need to curb if they want to win the Irish Shield this season.

Connacht suffered a late 20-18 defeat to Munster last week but will have been buoyed by their performance and beat Ulster 26-20 at the Aviva last August.

However, their patchy form so far this season pales in comparison to Ulster’s strong start and a performance similar to the one at Thomond will be needed if they are to come away from Dublin with at least four points to their name.

While Connacht have triumphed in just nine of their 37 meetings with Ulster, the last six have been shared with three wins apiece.

Henderson returns as captain for Ulster against Connacht

The Ulster match-day squad to face Connacht at Aviva Stadium on Saturday sees the return of Iain Henderson, Robert Baloucoune and Stuart McCloskey, with Eric O’Sullivan also coming in to start.

Iain Henderson will lead the Ulster men in his first game for the province this season and will partner Alan O’Connor in the second row.

O’Sullivan is the only change to the starting front row that defeated Emirates Lions last week, with Rob Herring and Tom O’Toole retaining their places at hooker and tighthead.

The back row is unchanged as Matty Rea, Nick Timoney and David McCann are all named to start.

The backline sees two changes and two positional switches – Ethan McIlroy moves to full-back and Craig Gilroy shifts to the left-wing while Robert Baloucoune comes into the right-wing.

Stuart McCloskey returns to pair up with James Hume in midfield while Nathan Doak and Billy Burns are the starting half-backs for the fourth consecutive game.

Brad Roberts, Andrew Warwick, Ross Kane, Kieran Treadwell and Greg Jones provide the forward reinforcements from the bench, with David Shanahan, Mike Lowry and Ben Moxham named as the backline cover.

Namibia v Ireland – Preview, Teams, Where To Watch

The Ireland Men’s national cricket team will take on Namibia in their final match in Group A of the 2021 ICC Men’s T20I World Cup.

The loss to Sri Lanka on Wednesday means that Ireland must beat Namibia if they are to be part of the Super 12.

Namibia made history when they beat the Netherlands on Wednesday to claim their first-ever victory at an ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

This year’s instalment of the World Cup is their debut in the competition and they will want to make the most of the chance they have to progress.

The winner will move on to the next round to meet New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the highest-ranked side in Group B (currently Scotland).

Bowler Josh Little was a bright spark for Ireland in the heavy loss on Wednesday and his captain Andrew Balbirnie thinks that the Dubliner has been fantastic for the national side in the past year.

The 21-year-old returned career-best figures of four for 23 in Abu Dhabi, which featured two wickets in his first over and took his 2021 T20I wicket tally to 12 from nine matches.

Balbirnie said: “Josh Little bowled to his plans and he has been a real find for us this year, he has bowled beautifully for us up top and we put them in real trouble…Josh is a huge asset. He has been a force in ODI cricket this year and really come to the fore.”

Head coach Graham Ford has said that his side are “desperate” to progress to the Super 12 with a win over Namibia.

Ford said: I think for us, we come to the tournament with a slightly different view to some of the bugger countries, in that we are gaining and learning with every single outing – trying to make as much progress in our cricket as possible.

“So, every game is important as far as that is concerned – to try and make those little improvements here and there and to sharpen our skills, and adapt to the extra pace in the pitches.

“Win or lose, we are gaining and we are learning, so that’s a big plus for us – but quite obviously we are desperate to go through to the next phase of the tournament as well.

“Despite the loss [yesterday] we are still alive and still in the competition, and that’s the important thing.”

Teams

Namibia: Gerhard Erasmus (C), Stephan Baard, Michau Du Preez, Zane Green, Bernard Scholtz, JJ Smit, Michael Van Lingen, Craig Williams, Karl Birkenstock, Jan Frylink, Nicol Loftie-Eaton, Ben Shikongo, Ruben Trumpelmann, David Weise, David Wiese, Pikky Ya France.

Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Gareth Delany, Joshua Little, Kevin O’Brien, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Benjamin White, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Neil Rock, Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Where To Watch

The match will start at 11 am and will be available to watch on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket – coverage begins at 10:30 am.

You can keep track of the live score on the ICC website and Cricket Ireland will provide Twitter updates throughout the match.
