Six Nations: Ireland v France cancelled

Six Nations organisers have yet to come up with dates for when the rescheduling of the game will occur. They continued in the statement, “No immediate announcement will be made on rescheduling as we will need to discuss with all relevant stakeholders”.

The news follows Sunday’s announcement by the French government. They announced that public gatherings of over 1,000 people would not go ahead. It means now the games will obviously have to be rescheduled. The Ireland and Italy which was due to be played last weekend was called off, as was England’s trip to Rome to take on the Italians this coming weekend. That now just leaves one game down for decision which is Wales v Scotland which looks set to go ahead. The U20 game between the sides will also go ahead. The women’s rugby game will not be played after player tested positive for coronavirus.

Two second half goals from Conor Whelan was enough to see Galway book their place in the league quarter finals on Sunday. Galway beating Tipperary in the end 3-21 to 3-13.

Tipperary ahead 3-11 to 1-14. Galway then took complete control of the game. They outscored Tipperary 2-07 to 0-02 from the remainder of the game.

Cricket Ireland is Monitoring the Spread of the 2019 Coronavirus

Cricket Ireland is scheduled to face the hosts in a six-game series in Zimbabwe on April 2 to 12 of this year. The matches include three Twenty20 face-offs and three one-day internationals at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulwayo.

However, there is a possibility that these matches won’t push through because of the threats that the coronavirus have worldwide. Earlier this month, Ireland’s women’s tour to Thailand was also cancelled because of this. The four-team tournament just didn’t push through.

According to Cricket Ireland, they are closely monitoring the situation. The association said in a statement, “Cricket Ireland is liaising with both Irish and British governments, as well as working closely with sporting authorities north and south, to ensure we are fully informed and confident that sending a squad to Zimbabwe will be safe for players, staff and travelling fans.” 

The spread of the 2019 coronavirus is becoming a concern for many countries. The virus that is reported to have started in Wuhan, China has already affected almost 100,000 people. There are already over 3,000 deaths that are related to this virus.

The sports industry is no exception when it comes to its effects. There are now many sporting events that have been either postponed or canceled because of this. Limerick book semi-final spot with win over Waterford

Limerick did enough to book their place in the Allianz Hurling League spot with a win over Waterford on Saturday. The Shannonsiders prevailing 1-21 to 1-17 in the end.

Peter Hogan got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Hogan was a half time substitute brought on my Cahill. The sides continued to swap scores. Gillane, Hegarty and Mulcahy landing scores to make it 1-14 to 0-10 after 55 minutes. Calum Lyons knocked over a Waterford point, before Gillane and Paddy O’Loughlin registered scores for Limerick. Waterford then got a lifeline with 58 minutes played. Jack Fagan soloed with the ball through the heart of the Limerick defence to reduce the margin to five to set up a close finish.

However, man of the match Gearoid Hegarty landed another score to bring his personal tally to 1-03. Gillane then had a goal effort tapped over the bar by Shane O’Brien. Waterford try as they must to turn the game around, but they just couldn’t get another girl which would have set up a titanic battle. Limerick through to the semi-finals, Waterford have to settle for a quarter-final place against Kilkenny or Wexford.

Maher and Steede named club players of the year

Borris Ileigh club man Brendan Maher and Corofin star Ronan Steede have been named club players of the year in hurling and football respectively.

Brendan Maher was fully deserving of his award having led his club to the All-Ireland Club Hurling Final. However his side lost out to Ballyhale Shamrocks. Earlier this week the GAA announced the hurling team of the year. It included five players,goalkeeper James McCormack  Paddy Stapleton, Jerry Kelly, Dan McCormack and of course Maher.  Moreover, Maher, an All-Ireland winner with Tipperary in 2019 scored 0-06 in that final. He also scored 0-07 in victory over Ballygunner in the Munster decider earlier in the year.

Maher as many would have seen by now was playing with a broken hurley in the win over St Thomas’ in the semi-final. Speaking at the AIB awards night he said of this, “I had a twenty-one yard free and I remember the second I hit the free the hurley just split down the middle,”. “I remember waving and running towards the dugout, calling for a new hurl, but I knew there wasn’t going to be enough time as the ball was pucked out short”.

Meanwhile Ronan Steede scooped the football award. He was also named on the team of the year. The Corofin man was instrumental in his side run to a third successive club All-Ireland title. He scored 0-03 in the final win over Down side Kilcoo. Padraic Joyce rewarded Steede for his super performance with a Galway debut. This came in the Allianz League meeting against Meath, Steede scored 1-01 in that game. The 28 year old said he was delighted he has been given a chance at inter-county. He said, Yes, I just got a call up there. Padraic likes attacking players as midfielders, he has that style of football he wants to play,”.
