Liverpool Prospect Leighton Clarkson Joins Blackburn On Loan

Liverpool prospect Leighton Clarkson has joined EFL Championship side Blackburn Rovers on loan for the 2021/22 season.

The announcement comes after reports that Ben Davies is set to also be loaned to a Championship side.

The 19-year-old will join the side that had fellow Liverpool starlet Harvey Elliott on loan last season in order to gain more experience at senior level.

Clarkson has made three appearances for the Reds at senior, including a start in the UEFA Champions League against FC Midtjylland in last season’s group stage.

The Lancashire native was on the bench four times throughout the club’s Champions League run last season.

He also played in the Premier League 2 14 times over the course of last season for the U23 side.

He recently signed a long-term contract with the club in December 2020 and is a graduate of the academy.

He will play at Blackburn Rovers under the tutelage of manager Tony Mowbray and his assistant, Mark Venus.

Elliott worked with the pair last season and racked up seven goals and 11 assists in an impressive campaign with the side.

The 18-year-old showcased his versatility while in Lancashire by playing in several positions for the side and excelling.

Clarkson will have the same opportunity as Elliott to show his parent club what he can do at a high level.

He will now aim to benefit from that relationship this season as he returns to his hometown with a view to playing regular first-team football.

Premier League 2021/2022 Home Jerseys Ranked

The 2021/2022 Premier League season has already kicked off.

A new season means a new kit for each club. The 20 clubs involved will showcase their glossy new home, away and alternative kits in the coming weeks.

New Premier League kits spark debate months prior to the end of each season, with fans in fury for a glimpse of their club’s new look kit. Each fan hopes and dreams their club’s newly remodelled design will become an instant classic rather than a mocked and ridiculed one that rival fans will latch onto.

Here at SportsNewsIreland, we’ve ranked all the confirmed list of Premier League home kits for the 2021/2022 Premier League kits.

Let us know which ones you prefer.

Premier League Kits 2020/2021

20) Watford

Watford really did no favours on their home kit. The modernised version of last season’s awful sun-stripped design is an improvement but still leaves little to the imagination for Hornet fans.

The thick black line design along with the bright yellow does not match, while the sponsorship logos placed around the jersey is distracting.

Rating: 2/10

19) Brentford

Designer’s Umbro has almost put out a carbon copy off Brentford’s home kit from last season in the championship. Copy and Paste with a new sponsor, while changing Utilita to Hollywood bets looks tacky.

Overall, the kit is plain and dull with no improvement, and for Brentford’s Premier League debut season, it is a disappointment.

Rating: 3/10

18) Liverpool

Unlike Liverpool’s retro away kit. In recent times Liverpool has had some brilliant kits, some of the best but Nike has failed miserably with their home kit design. The orange mixed with the red is off-putting, while the combination of diagonals and zigzags was a terrible idea.

Rating: 3/10

17) Norwich City

Too bright, too tacky and just too Norwich. The massive JD sponsors on the sleeves are distracting and the overall design doesn’t sit well with me.

Rating: 4/10

16) Burnley

Bland, bland, bland. Fitting FOR Burnley in many ways. The Clarets have kept it stupid here. The only noticeable difference is the blue and white design on the sleeves.

Not bad, but nothing special either.

Rating: 4.5/10

15) Brighton & Hove Albion

Going back to its white and blue striped design from last season’s all blue with almost invisible white lines. Nike has shown a return to form this season with a strong offering for Seagull fans.

Compared to other kits, it’s fall’s flat, looking like previous Brighton kits leaves it in the okay category for now. Not an eye-opener, but by no means one of the worst.

Rating: 5/10

14) Newcastle United

Castore’s first Newcastle kit is average at best, what I have always loved about Newcastle’s home kit through the years is how simple yet effective they are. This year’s design is a mixed bag. The collar is stunning but other than that it’s underwhelming.

Not enough stripes for my liking.

Rating: 5/10

13) Southampton

Southampton with Hummel has gone a slightly different route this season. Lovely sleeve designs and the chevron detailing through the stripes are a classic retro inclusion.

Rating: 5.5/10

12) Everton

Overall, the mixture of designs can be distracted to the naked eye. While the different shades of blue might make or break Everton fans happy levels with the kit. But the ‘dazzle-camouflage inspired’ pattern is a standout.

Get rid of the Cazoo sponsor though.

Rating: 5.5/10

11) Leeds United

Very clean, very solid and overall, just very nice. The mixing of bright yellow and white makes the jersey stand out above last year’s dark blue lines and a darker shade of white.

Rating: 6/10

10) Tottenham Hotspurs

Sometimes plain and simple does the job well, Spurs have always done little to go somewhere different with their home kits. The plain white serves them well but for many Spurs, fans just a white shirt is what Spurs should release every year.

It is what it is.

Rating: 6/10

9) Manchester City

Much more of a fan of last season’s cracked shirt design, City have not gone backwards per se but it’s not an improvement either. But, it is still a good kit nonetheless. Serving as a rather plain kit that is not boring, the main standout is the 93:20 reference to the 2011/12 Aguero goal is a nice touch that will be sure to make City fans cry with joy.

It also takes a dig at United, which will be sure to annoy United fans.

Rating: 6.5/10

8) Chelsea

Easily the most decisive Premier League home kit, I would have put this jersey in the bad category but it has grown on me. Usually, Chelsea home kits are nice, solid in their design, the dark blue is always nice.

Nike and Chelsea went bold with this design. It was a high-risk decision with the unusual zig-zag and checkered design. The yellow strip gives the jersey an extra dimension.

But I must say, it is a lot to take in.

Rating: 7/10

7) Wolves

How anyone can mess up the Wolves home kit is beyond me but the gold and black will always be a solid fit. An improvement from last season, its hard to find a Wolves home kit that isn’t at least passable.

Rating: 7/10

6) Leicester City

At first glance, some might mistake this kit for a Birmingham City kit of days gone by, squint your eyes and tell me it’s not similar. For me, Leicester’s home kits are always the best each season. The collar here is gorgeous with the golden trim.

It’s 50/50 on if someone will like the controversial design.

Rating: 7.5/10

5) Crystal Palace

Looking at this kit the one word that comes to mind is ‘fresh’. The diagonal stripes are an interesting change of direction. What makes the jersey so good is the dark blue edging between the stripes along with the red and blue colouring. Well played Palace, well played.

Rating: 8/10

4) Aston Villa

The detail this Villa kit has will please fans. Its pinstripes within stripes is an interesting design choice. One of the best claret and blue jerseys in the league. The colours and crest themselves stand out big time.

If I were a Villa fan, I would be pleasantly pleased with Kappa and what they have produced this time around.

Rating: 8/10

3) Manchester United

At first, the inclusion of ‘TeamViewer’ sponsorship looked uninspired, but the plain red with little design is a blast from the nostalgic blast.

The long sleeves are reminiscent of the George Best days, Adidas should be proud of this year’s kit. Getting rid of the hideous Chevrolet sponsor was much, much needed.

Rating: 8.5/10

2) Arsenal

Ajax jokes aside, this kit design is one of Arsenal’s best-released kits in recent time. When it comes to jerseys, Arsenal is the king that can do no wrong.

The inclusion of the three dark blue stripes on the shoulders is a nice touch and the decision to darken the red was inspired. A vast improvement on last season’s jersey.

Rating: 9/10

1) West Ham United

Kudos to Umbro here, producing an eye-opener jersey that is plain but looks so nice the more you look at it. The smart collar and blue sleeves are Paolo Di Canio-esque.

It is a throwback kit that screams nostalgia, a retro jersey at its finest. Did I mention how much I love the collar? Cause I do.

Rating: 9.5/10

Mayo v Dublin Player Ratings

Mayo is through to the All-Ireland final after a glistering comeback win over the Dubs in Croke Park on Saturday night.

After a poor first-half performance that saw Dessie Farrell’s side lead Mayo 10 points to 4, James Horan’s men defied all odds and stopped the Dublin juggernaut.

Here is how we saw it with the Mayo-Dublin player ratings.

Mayo

Rob Hennelly – 8

Gave one of his best performances in a Mayo shirt. Improved kick-outs as the game went on, had little to do in terms of making important saves as Dublin’s goal threat was non-existent for large parts of the game. Scored three points from free’s with the equalizing point the forced extra-time.

Padraig O’Hora – 9

The Man of The Match winning performer has been the beating heart of this young Mayo side this season. Kept Con O’Callaghan at bay for the majority of the match and produced an early reminder with a big shoulder hit on a Dublin player. Picked up an assist for Mayo’s opener from Matthew Ruane and finished the game strong, his post-match interview will live long in the memory for many.

Lee Keegan – 7

Had little impact if any in the first half, bar catching a few balls in the air. However, his second-half performance was the Lee Keegan of old. Drove forward with the ball, galloping past the Dublin team with energy. Did well to keep possession to give Mayo an incredible victory in extra-time.

Michael Plunkett – 6

Unfortunately for Plunkett, he was left isolated for much of the game. Coming in for the injured Oisin Mullin was a big ask for the Ballintubber defender. Tried his best but was replaced by Byran Walsh on 49 minutes.

Paddy Durcan – 8

Picking up a yellow card for a tussle with defender Jonny Cooper was the only negative for Durcan. One of Mayo’s bright sparks in the first half, bringing the much-needed speed and ferocity to his team that he is known. Made a superb block from Cormac Costello in the dying efforts to see out the victory.

Stephen Coen – 7

Did what he had to do for large parts of the game. Got overrun in the first half but his engine and fitness came to fruition. Worked the ball left to right, carried the ball into space. He was influential for this Mayo side. Was taken off at 75 minutes.

Eoghan McLaughlin – 6

Worked hard in the first half and was a bright spark for an average looking Mayo side in the first half. Lost a few balls but tried to recover. His game ended after a sickening challenge from John Small and was stretchered off after 58 minutes.

Matthew Ruane – 8.5

If you ask yourself what was the main reason for how Mayo won this game, you will conclude that it was down to Matthew Ruane in the midfield. An absolute monster performance that saw him pocket a Dublin midfield consisting of James McCarthy, Brian Howard, and Brian Fenton. Got Mayo’s opening score and never looked back. Unreal.

Conor Loftus – 6

Ruane’s midfield partner for much of the season, Loftus has improved drastically this championship season. Working really hard for the cause in the first half with a turnover from James McCarthy a standout. Was substituted in the 64th minute for fresh legs but was brought back on after 81 minutes. Scored a crucial point in the first half that reduced the game to 6 points.

Diarmuid O’Connor – 7

Had a quiet day in terms of scoring but his ability to turn up when it counts is admirable. His influence grew as the game carried on. He will be remembered for his iconic 63rd-minute effort, which saw him dive to keep the ball in from Hennelly’s effort, leading to a magnificent score from Kevin McLoughlin.

Kevin McLoughlin – 6.5

The Mayo veteran gave it his all, you get leadership from McLoughlin, which was evident throughout. Started brightly a kicked an outrageous left-foot shot to give Mayo hope.

Darren McHale – 5.5

A quiet and frustrating day for the McHale, who had little to no service coming in from a rough opening 30 minutes from Mayo. Was replaced after a mere 28 minutes for Enda Hession.

Tommy Conroy – 8

As the game reached crunch time, his impact will be long remembered by Mayo fans for years to come. Overall he was a nuisance for Dublin all game. Fouled constantly, but picked up 3 points from open play that saw his side triumph.

Aidan O’Shea – 5

It was one of the worst games for the Mayo captain in recent times. Had a nightmare first half which saw him latch onto one high ball that led to a mark. Missing a 20 metre free showcased his frustrations and was taken off after 49 minutes, O’Shea did not look happy but it proved a stroke of genius. Was brought on late to nullify the Dublin high balls. He will have a chance to write the wrongs in the final.

Ryan O’Donoghue – 8

The Belmullet forward was Mayo’s best player for large parts of the game. Looked energetic and played with his heart on his sleeve. Scored from a mark and hit 0-5 overall.

SUBSTITUTES

Enda Hession – 7

Came on for Darren McHale in the first half and made a huge difference during the second half. Brought energy to a slow Mayo and never looked back.

James Carr – 6

Brought energy and willingness to work hard for the cause but was not as influential as first hoped.

Byran Walsh – 6

Not much to say came on for Michael Plunkett and worked hard but nothing drastic.

Jordan Flynn – 7.5

Scored a crucial point and gained a mark that led to a Tommy Conroy score. He played well when he came on for the injured McLaughlin.

Conor O’Shea – 6

Played without fear, getting stuck in but lost a ball that could have led to a Dublin score.

Darren Coen – 7

Kicked a beautiful score to get Mayo motoring, did his job well.

James Durcan – N/A

Not on long enough.

Brendan Harrison – N/A

Not on long enough.

Dublin

Evan Comerford – 6

A frustrating night for the young goalkeeper. Lost numerous kick-outs to Mayo’s high press, his first real test was one of his worst. Over-carried in the 67th minute to allow Mayo to reduce the deficit to 2 points. Looked nervous throughout, but the 23-year-old will improve.

Michael Fitzsimons – 6.5

A stalwart of the Dublin defence for many years, Fitzsimons had a game of two halves. Looked strong on the ball in the opening 30 minutes but fell off in the second half. Struggled to control his full-back line which saw Mayo run riot.

David Byrne – 5

Like many of Dublin’s players in the first half. They had the license to roam into pockets of space, Byrne looked comfortable. He will soon want to forget his second-half performance. Caught for over-carrying and lost possession countless times that led to a few Mayo scores. An awful night.

Jonny Cooper – 6

Hot and cold for an ever-reliable source. Brought energy and a willingness to step up for the Dubs throughout the game but looked out of sorts with his tightness to attacks and was eventually replaced on 52 minutes for Tom Lahiff.

James McCarthy – 7

McCarthy was a frustrated figure after Mayo clawed back the lead from the Dubs. Prior to that, he looked comfortable, ready and strong on and off the ball. Stopping Mayo with great resistance in the first half. There was a case he should have been sent off but was black-carded for a stupid foul on Lee Keegan in the closing moments of extra-time.

John Small – 5

Invisible for large parts of the game, never really got a foothold and was very lucky not to have been sent off for a dangerous tackle on Eoghan McLaughlin.

Eoin Murchan – 6

Not much to say here, done his job for parts of the game, the lack of sharpness hampered his performance here after making his return from injury in the Leinster final against Kildare. He was tasked with roaming near Aidan O’Shea to pick any loose balls. Sustained an injury and hobbled off in the 67th minute.

Brian Fenton – 7

One of the great football midfielders experienced what many should feel while playing football, a loss. The multiple time All-Ireland winner will have hated to have lost his first championship match but he played well. Caught some lovely balls but was outperformed by the excellent Matthew Ruane.

Brian Howard – 6

Looked good and fresh in the opening minutes but a hard hit from Padraic O’Hora changed things and he could never really recover afterwards. Replaced after 82 minutes.

Paddy Small – 6.5

Similar To his brother, he had little to no impact on the game. Kicked two points from play and had a decent first half. As the game faded from Dublin, he struggled to take a foothold of the match.

Ciarán Kilkenny – 5.5

Got 3 points and tried his best throughout to put a foothold on the match. Invisible in the second half like many Dublin players around him. Padraic O’Hora did a number on him.

Niall Scully – 6

Not much can be said about Scully’s performance. Worked hard but no real end product. He got substituted after 62 minutes when the game looked over.

Dean Rock – 6

The ever-reliable Dean Rock had a relatively quiet game for his standards. Scored 7 points, with two of the seven being from free’s. Tracked back to help out but could do little to stop the Mayo onslaught.

Con O’Callaghan – 6

Much like Dublin’s forward line after the first half, O’Callaghan was a frustrated figure. Was fed with plenty of ball for large parts but faded in the second-half and beyond when Mayo came at them.

Cormac Costello – 5

An awful day for the forward, Costello looked and played like an annoying figure. Kept scoreless and scuffed a few half chances. He was replaced for Colm Basquel on 49 minutes.

SUBSTITUTES

Colm Basquel – 5

Dublin’s first substitute saw himself black-carded for a reckless pull-down. Little to talk about.

Tom Lahiff – 5

Came on for Jonny Cooper on 51 minutes, did little to impact the game and got black-carded.

Seán Bugler – 6

Opened the scoring for Dublin in extra time to give them a 0-14 to 0-13 lead, done little else after that.

Sean McMahon – 5.5

Came on to settle the ship when Mayo took control but could do little to stop the inevitable.

Philly McMahon – 5

Gave Hennelly the opportunity to write his wrong with the re-take that gifted Mayo the chance to equalize. Lost half of his jersey in a scuffle.

Robbie McDaid – 6

Made his appearance in the 81st minute and just floated around.

Aaron Byrne – 5

Cormac Costello’s replacement had little to no involvement when introduced on 82 minutes.

Kerry – Tyrone Semi-Final Delayed A Second Time

The All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone has been delayed for another week to Saturday, August 28th after Tyrone announced that they could not fulfil the fixture if it were to go ahead on August 21st.

The Ulster champions’ county board said that it could not field a side after receiving expert medical opinion on the health of their players.

There has been a Covid outbreak in the setup that has caused the county to play without some players n the Ulster Senior Football Championship and the game to be rescheduled once previously.

The updated schedule also sees the All-Ireland get pushed back another week to Sunday, September 11th.

The winner of the semi-final between the Munster and Ulster champions will face Mayo in the final after they beat defending champions Dublin in extra time in their semi-final.

The GAA say the revised schedule has been finalised with the integrity of the championship in mind and to ensure that Kerry were not denied a semi-final outing.

Tyrone’s county board have welcomed the decision made by the CCCC to postpone their fixture for a second time.

A statement released on the Tyrone GAA website reads: “Tyrone GAA welcomes the decision taken by the CCCC at national level, this evening, to defer the All-Ireland football semifinal between Tyrone and Kerry to Saturday 28th August, as a result of the transmission of the Covid19 virus among a number of players on the Tyrone panel.
“Tyrone has also paid tribute to Kerry GAA and its senior football team for its assistance and co-operation in creating the circumstances that allowed this decision to be reached.
“The Tyrone players and management will prepare as safely as possible, in the continuing difficult circumstances, to ensure that the best available team will now fulfil this very important fixture.”
Times for both fixtures will be announced in due course.

Liverpool Defender Ben Davies Set For Blades Loan

Liverpool defender Ben Davies is set to complete a loan move to EFL Championship side Sheffield United for the 2021/22 season.

The two clubs are close to an agreement that would see Davies get game-time for the season in the second tier of English football.

There will be no option for the Blades to buy Davies during their first season back in the Championship.

The Liverpool player had taken part in the side’s pre-season ahead of the current season.

The 26-year-old joined Liverpool in January amidst an injury crisis but has failed to play in any competitive fixtures for the side since his arrival.

The former Preston North End defender joined the then-Premier League champions on deadline day in January.

The Englishman signed a long-term deal with the side and was signed to bolster their ranks at centre-back.

Davies had spent three-and-a-half years playing in the Championship with Preston after breaking into the side before leaving and will bring that experience with him to Sheffield.

The defender was Preston’s Player of the Year for 2019.

Davies will join the ranks at Sheffield, which include Republic of Ireland defenders John Egan and Enda Stevens.

He will become the side’s first incoming transfer of the summer after an exodus took place following their relegation last season.

Five centre-backs have left the club this summer and Ethan Ampadu also returned to Chelsea following the end of his loan period, leaving the side in need of reinforcement at the back.

Davies potential season-long loan would leave Liverpool with six centre-backs on their backs, including Rhys Williams.

Liverpool face Burnley in their first home fixture of the new season on Saturday, August 21st at 12:30 pm.

Chalobah has debut to remember against Palace

Young defender Trevoh Chalobah scores screamer in debut win as Chelsea thrash Crystal Palace at home

For the first time in a year and a half, Stamford Bridge was at full capacity for a Premier League match. A crowd of nearly 40,000 people came to see what was a one-sided but entertaining game of football.

This was Premier League legend Patrick Viera’s first game in charge of Crystal Palace as they looked to surprise the Blues. This did not come close to happening as Chelsea bossed the game throughout.

After continuous pressure in the opening half an hour, Marcos Alonso sweetly struck a 30-yard freekick past a confused Vicente Guaita. The goal sent roars around the stadium and energized Thomas Tuchel’s side even more.

Just before halftime, a scramble in the box led to a Cristian Pulisic poke home as Chelsea went in after 45 minutes two goals up.

This performance will worry Crystal Palace fans as they only made one meaningful attack. After being played through at a tight angle, a Wilfried Zaha shot was blocked down by Antonio Rudiger.

This game gave a Premier League debut to 22-year-old defender Trevoh Chalobah who impressed in the Super Cup final. Just before the hour mark and all his dreams came true, standing alone 30 yards from goal, he blasted a low shot into the corner of the net.

The young man collapsed to his knees in amazement at his shot. This goal capped off the match as the final half an hour went by slowly.

This game only lowered Crystal Palace’s confidence and leaves them in a poor position for the rest of the season.

Chelsea will face Arsenal away from home on Sunday 22nd of August at 16:30 in the Emirates stadium.

Match Facts

Chelsea

Mendy (GK), Chalobah, Christensen, Rudiger, Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso, Mount, Pulisic, Werner.

Goalscorers

Alonso 27′, Pulisic 40′, Chalobah 58′

Liverpool FC Women Announce Greaves-Smith Departure

Liverpool FC Women has announced that Adam Greaves-Smith will leave his role of general manager at the end of August, ending his three-year association with the club following a restructure within the department.

Greaves-Smith was involved with the club during a tough time which saw the side get relegated to the FA Women’s Championship.

The side will compete in the Championship for the second season in a row after a third-place finish last season was not enough to send them back to the top tier of women’s football in England.

Liverpool Women finished 11 points off the pace of champions Leicester City.

“I’d like to thank my colleagues at LFC for a fantastic experience over the past three years,” he said. “With an upcoming restructure, the timing was right for me personally to explore new challenges, whilst giving me time to focus on a difficult period in my family life. I’d like to thank the club for their understanding and support during this.

“I’d also like to thank my colleagues, the FA, fans and so many others who have worked so closely with me during my time at LFCW. It’s been an exciting journey and I’m looking forward to embarking on new adventures ahead. I will be supporting our men’s and women’s teams from afar and wish everyone the very best for the future.”

Everyone at LFC Women wishes Adam well for the future and the search now begins to recruit a new role of LFC Women managing director to lead the team and department in the next phase of its development.

Liam Sheedy steps down as Tipperary boss

Liam Sheedy and his entire backroom team have stepped away from the Tipperary senior hurling team today

The boss from Portroe has left his manager position along with Eamonn O’Shea, Tommy Dunne, Darragh Egan, and Eoin Kelly. This was his second three-year stint in charge of the Premier county.

He did not leave empty-handed as he won the All Ireland in his first year back with the team in 2019. They beat Kilkenny by a massive 14 points in Croke Park in that final.

The last two years have not been so kind for the county with two quarter-final exits, including a loss to Waterford in the most recent season.

The county board released a statement that confirmed the news:
“Liam leaves the position today having brought great success to the county, guiding a great group of players to All-Ireland success in 2019.

We wish him well in his retirement and we thank him for all he has done for Tipperary GAA and in particular Tipperary hurling.”

Sheedy also won an Ireland against Kilkenny in his first stint in charge of the Premier county’s hurling team. He has now made a statement this morning on his retirement.

“I have enjoyed the three years immensely and even though none of us expected or wished for the heartache and disruption that Covid-19 caused, I am well aware that sport, even when it was without attendances, played a big part in lifting people’s spirits in the last 12 months.

“I could not have undertaken this role without the help and support of so many people. I want to sincerely thank my wonderful management and backroom teams. Eamon, Tommy, Darragh and Eoin were excellent in all that they did and their dedication was exemplary. I could not have asked for a better team around me.

“The players I worked with over the last three years are an incredible group. Their ability, attitude and commitment were inspiring. I want to thank them all very much and wish them the very best for the future.”

Next year will be a major transition period for Tipperary hurling as they look for a new manager and new players after the retirement of former captain Brendan Maher.
