Dingley Completes Ireland’s Unforgettable Diving World Cup

Tokyo 2021 qualifier Oliver Dingley has completed a memorable week for Ireland at the FINA Diving World Cup in Japan with a score of 351.35 in the 3m Springboard Semi-Final.

Dingley, who finished eighth in the 3m Springboard at Rio 2016, earned qualification for his second Olympic Games on Wednesday when finishing 15th in the preliminary round of his competition.

His efforts on Thursday were Team Ireland’s final dives in Tokyo for this week, with attentions now turning to the LEN European Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

All four divers – Dingley, Clare Cryan, Ciara McGing and Tanya Watson – who competed at the FINA Diving World Cup will travel on Friday to Hungary, where competition begins on Monday, May 10.

Reflecting on the week in Tokyo, Swim Ireland’s National Performance Director Jon Rudd said: “”This has been a very successful week for Irish Diving and we are all very proud of what our athletes have achieved.

“We must give a huge deal of credit to the coaches and the practitioners for preparing these athletes to perform so well in what have been extremely challenging circumstances.

“Tanya and Oliver will clearly be delighted with the knowledge that their invitation to Tokyo is secure, whilst Ciara and Clare must now wait for a period of up to two weeks to discover whether either of them will be added to those invites.

“To have our largest ever diving team for an Olympic Games and our first ever female Olympic diver as an outcome of this competition is superb and we can all look forwards to a European Championships in a few days’ time and enjoy watching this quartet compete once more.”

Damian Ball, National Head Coach for Diving, added: “It’s been a very challenging and emotional two weeks here in Japan. Words can’t describe how proud I am of this team. A big thank you to everyone who has made this story possible.

“Budapest and the European Championships awaits us next and the team can head into this full of confidence.”

Irish Athletes to get vaccinated before Olympic Games on Japan

Following today’s statement from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) regarding the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE to donate doses of COVID-19’s vaccinations to Games participants, positive discussions have taken place with the Irish government who also welcome the development. These vaccinations will be supplementary to the existing allocations that Ireland is administering and will be provided to Olympic and Paralympic athletes and support staff who are travelling to Tokyo, a number which is in the low hundreds. This will not negatively impact the vaccinations that are being administered around the country already.

We are working closely with all parties to advance this progress as we work towards a positive resolution which will significantly alleviate athlete anxiety and support athlete safety ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.  We acknowledge the ongoing engagement and support of the Irish government as we prepare for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We will be meeting with Minister Jack Chambers again shortly to further discuss our preparations ahead of the games this summer.

North West Warriors produce an all-round team performance

The North West Warriors bounced back from last Saturday’s loss with an impressive all-round team performance that saw them account for the Munster Reds in the Inter-Provincial Cup today at Eglinton Cricket Club.

After off-season changes to the Cup competition, this match represented the first appearance of the Munster Reds side in the 50-over format.

After morning showers delayed the start of play – and with the game reduced to 43-overs a side – Warriors captain Andy McBrine won the toss and immediately chose to bowl first. After removing Reds’ opener Seamus Lynch (8) early, the Warriors’ tails were up looking to exploit the damp conditions. However, Cormac McLoughlin-Gavin and Murray Commins steadied the innings and then began to counter-attack in a 62-run stand. McLoughlin-Gavin particularly grew in confidence as his innings progressed – at one stage slog sweeping two sixes over mid-wicket, before he was removed by Stuart Thompson for 36.

Curtis Campher then came to the wicket and set about hitting five fours in an innings of 34 from 30 balls. At the other end, Commins joined in with the boundaries, clearing the ropes from a Craig Young half-volley and soon after brought up his fifty with a cover drive to the boundary. Looking to up the run rate, Commins fell on 61 to a tame caught and bowled by Boyd Rankin.

Captain Tyrone Kane (23) and Greg Ford (24) added late runs, but the Warriors wrested back the game’s momentum by taking 6-20 in the last six overs to end the Reds innings on 219 from 42 overs.

For the Warriors, left-arm off spinner Ross Allen claimed three wickets (3-40), while McBrine and Graham Hume took two apiece. Hume was probably the pick of the bowlers finishing with 2-18 from 8 overs and demonstrating his prowess at delivering a patient line and length, while extracting occasional movement out of a green-tinged wicket.

The Warriors response was a model in pacing a run chase perfectly. Stephen Doheny briefly lit up the ground with 20 from 12 balls, while opening partner William Porterfield compiled a solid 38 from 56 balls. For the second match in a row, McBrine came it at first-drop and once more played a confident knock, making 32 from 53 balls.

Stuart Thompson looked to swing the arms and struck four fours and two sixes in an attractive run-a-ball innings of 42. While his dismissal saw the Warriors poised on 148-4, and the Reds seeming to lift in the field, Shane Getkate (35*) and Graham Kennedy (36) came together to put on a 58-run fifth wicket partnership in 52 balls and take the game away from the visitors. Kennedy fell in the shadow of victory, but Hume and Getkate put the finishing touches to the chase, with Getkate smashing a ball through covers to the boundary to register the well-deserved win.

Andy McBrine was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance making 32 runs and taking 2-36.

The next Inter-Provincial Cup match is between the Northern Knights and Leinster Lightning on 16 May at Comber.

Bundee Aki joins elite list of Connacht Rugby players to go on the British And Irish Lions Tour

It was quite a surprise but Bundee Aki has joined an elite list of Connacht Rugby players to go on the British And Irish Lions Tour.

Warren Gatland named AKI in his touring squad, it was expected Garry Ringrose would have been selected but Bundeee got the nod.

The previous Connacht players to play for the Lions are Ray McLoughlin (1966, 1971), John O’Driscoll (1980, 1983) & Ciaran Fitzgerald (1983) who were all before the professional era.

Several players are named in a Lions squad for a first time, including Josh Adams, Bundee Aki, Chris Harris, Ali Price, Louis Rees-Zammit, Tadhg Beirne, Jack Conan, Zander Fagerson, Iain Henderson, Jonny Hill, Wyn Jones, Andrew Porter, Sam Simmonds, Rory Sutherland and Hamish Watson.

“We believe we’ve picked a squad capable of winning a Test series in South Africa,” said Gatland.

“Selecting a Lions squad is never easy and, in many ways, this has been the most challenging selection I have been involved in. Over the course of the last three weeks the coaches and I have rigorously debated each position.

Gatland names Jones as his 2021 Lions captain

“We saw some outstanding performance in the recent Six Nations, so competition for places has been tough with some incredibly tight calls to make.

“However, we are very happy with the squad we have assembled and look forward to meeting up in Jersey in just over a month’s time to start our preparation to take on the World Champions. We’ve left out some very talented players which gives an indication to the strength of this squad and we know how important that stand-by list will be.

“Being selected for a Lions Tour is the greatest honour for a British and Irish player and I congratulate everyone named today.”

Sam Bennett wins stage 1 of Volta ao Algarve

Ireland’s Sam Bennett returned to action on Wednesday and duly won stage 1 of the Volta ao Algarve.

In a bunch sprint, the Tour de France green jersey winner of 2020 claimed the 55th professional win of his career.

The opening day of the Volta ao Algarve was a 189.5 kilometre stage from Lagos to Portimão. It wasn’t as straightforward as the profile suggested, however.

A number of crashes throughout the day meant a lot of riders were absent for the finale. Among them were Shane Archbold and Fabio Jakobsen, who were involved in a small incident with four kilometres remaining. Fortunately neither suffered any serious injury.

Thought the finale was very hectic, Deceuninck – Quick-Step team did their job to perfection. Bennett’s team took up the pace-setting ahead of the flamme rouge and delivered an impeccable piloting masterclass.

Ireland’s top cyclist kicked for home with 125 metres to the line when teammate Michael Mørkøv peeled off the front.

Sixth win for Bennett this season

For the sixth time this season Bennett raised his arms in celebration. He beat Danny Van Poppel (Intermarche-Wanty Gobert) and Jon Aberasturi (Caja Rural) by more than a bike length.

It was a first win for Bennett in Portugal on his first racing visit to the Volta ao Algarve.

“The legs felt good, but there were a lot of crashes and we spent a lot of energy coming back to the front and keeping our position,” explained Sam Bennett post-race.”

“I didn’t know how my condition was going to be after a month with no racing and didn’t expect it to be that hard, but I’m happy I could finish it off and I got the yellow jersey as a bonus”, the Irish cyclist added as he became the fifth different Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider in six years to claim the opening stage of the race.

KCMG signs Irish teenager Alex Dunne as first Driver Development Project

KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) has signed Irish teenager Alex Dunne as the first member of its newly launched Driver Development Project (KCMG-DDP).

The 15-year-old has seen plenty of success in karting as the 2019 World Series Karting Champions Cup – OK Junior champion. Supported by KCMG, Dunne makes his car racing debut this weekend in the Spanish F4 Championship with Pinnacle Motorsport at Spa-Francorchamps and secured pole position in Thursday’s qualifying.

Launched earlier this week, the KCMG-DDP is a significant new cornerstone of the Hong Kong outfit’s vast range of activities. The programme aims to utilise KCMG’s global motorsport presence and array of resources to nurture young talent and help create the next generation of stars.

Under KCMG’s wing, Dunne will be given a dedicated driver mentor and performance coach, in addition to a dedicated physiotherapist who will maintain his fitness levels during and between races. The team will also provide financial support, covering Dunne’s entry fees, running costs and testing opportunities.

Paul Ip, KCMG Founder: “We’re very excited to have Alex as our first KCMG Driver Development Project member. He has been very impressive in karting and we’re looking forward to honing his skills behind the wheel and helping to make him more of a complete package off the track as well. With our support, we believe he can have a strong maiden season in Spanish F4. These are the first moments for the KCMG-DDP, which is an exciting new arm of KCMG’s vast array of motorsport activities to help young drivers progress through the ranks and become the stars of the future.”

Alex Dunne: “I’m delighted to join up with KCMG and their new Driver Development Project ahead of my debut season in Spanish F4. It’s a great honour and opportunity to receive their support in all aspects of motorsport to make me become a better driver, developing my skills and improving my all-round ability behind the wheel. I’m excited to get started with the team and I hope we can have a successful season together, starting this weekend at Spa-Francorchamps.”

Irish teenager Andrew Moran scores wondergoal in u17 Premier League Cup

He netted the opener as his Brighton & Hove Albion side went on to win 2-0.

Irish midfielder/forward Andrew Moran has attracted serious attention from top clubs in recent weeks. His performance today in the u17 Premier League cup will do nothing to quell that interest.

The 17-year-old scored an unbelievable goal to open the scoring, expertly turning past his man on the half-way line before running towards goal and finishing cleverly into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Marcus Ifill scored Brighton’s second in the 80th minute in what turned out to be the final goal of the contest. The Seagulls were then crowned u17 Premier League Cup winners.

Aside from his goal, Moran looked the best player on the pitch, demonstrating an outstanding touch and quick feet as well as an eye for a pass. Although he’s just 17, it already looks as though he has outgrown that level. His compatriots Evan Ferguson and James Furlong are regular fixtures in the Brighton u23 team and it looks like Moran may be on a similar trajectory.

The Dubliner previously played for Bray Wanderers and only signed for Brighton last summer, but he’s taken no time in adjusting to a new culture and change in level. Moran has a highly impressive 11 goals and 12 assists at u18 Premier League level this season, showing that he not only has an eye for goal, but also for a killer pass.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANDREW MORAN?

Although there’s plenty of interest in Moran’s services at the moment, he could be better served staying at Brighton for the time being.

As mentioned previously, it seems like Moran has really settled at the club. So a change in scenery may not be the best thing for his development at this stage.

Also, Brighton have shown that there’s a pathway to the first-team for young players in recent years. Robert Sanchez, Ben White and Aaron Connolly are just some examples of footballers who’ve progressed from underage to first-team level at the club.

It looks very likely that Moran will be promoted to the u23 team next season given his performances this season, so that should provide a new challenge for the 17-year-old.

Diving – Oliver Dingley Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics 2021

Oliver Dingley has qualified for Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games at the FINA Diving World Cup, this will be his second games.

Dingley needed to finish in the Top 18 in the 3m springboard to achieve automatic qualification for his second Olympic Games and secured 15th .

The National Record-holder scored 399.75 points in the preliminary round, advancing to the semi-finals, which take place on Thursday morning from 2am and could yet see him improve his final position.

Tanya Watson, who on Tuesday became the first Irish female diver to qualify for an Olympic Games, finished her competition with a score of 295.50 points in the 10m Platform semi-final.

Improving on the 271.85 points achieved in the preliminary round, the 19-year-old’s semi-final score is the highest she has ever posted in a FINA competition.

This has come despite a tumultuous 12 months, in which Watson has seen her normal training pool in Southampton, UK closed for long periods during lockdowns.

Watson has spent much of the past year at National Centre (Dublin) training with Oliver Dingley and Clare Cryan under Ireland’s National Head Coach for Diving, Damian Ball at the Sport Ireland National Aquatic Centre.

Reflecting, Damian Ball, National Head Coach for Diving, said: “Another fantastic day and some top class performances from our divers.

“Ollie’s experience was clear today, he was consistent, confident, and hardly put a foot wrong. 16 months of no competitions hasn’t seemed to phase Ollie at all.

“Tanya dived with passion and enjoyment in her debut World Cup semi-final. 2 points was all that separated her from a spot in the final. The remainder of this season could be very promising for this young talent.”

The next stop for Watson is the LEN European Championship in Budapest, which begins on Monday, May 10.
