Down Club Football Final: Carryduff vs Kilcoo Preview

It’s Carryduff vs Kilcoo in the Down Club Football Final on Sunday.

Last season’s All-Ireland runners-up have a chance to make it eight out of nine in Down. On the other side, Carryduff are the surprise package in this year’s Championship.

Last weekend, the Magpies overcame St. Peter’s Warrenpoint in the semi-final. It was neck-in-neck for much of the game before Kilcoo pulled away in the second half. Niall Kane nailed a couple of long frees at crucial times. Then, ten minutes into the second half, Jerome Johnston found the net. Mickey Moran’s team never looked back after that and it ended 1-18 to 2-06. As a result, Kilcoo return to the final for the ninth time in a row.

Only one of these finals have ended in defeat. In 2018, St. Mary’s Burren halted the Kilcoo freight train. In spite of this, the Eoghan Rua side returned last year to right that wrong. Previously, they have won six-in-a-row between 2012 and 2017.

Surprisingly, Kilcoo have already tasted defeat in this year’s Club Championship. Early on they lost by a point to Cumann Pheader Naofa. Yet, this only spurred them on and Kilcoo’s desire has not relented.

On the other hand, Carryduff needed extra-time to beat Ballyholland Harps. In the end, they finished stronger and won by the bare minimum. Veteran Ronan Murtagh brought calm to the ship and led by example. This is Carryduff’s first-ever final.

Like Kilcoo, they have also lost a game already. Clonduff defeated them 4-11 to 1-09. But this will be long forgotten in Carryduff come Sunday.

Kilcoo are the team to beat in Down and Carryduff will relish the test. The presence of fans adds to the sense of occasion and will be welcomed by the players.

Dublin hurling final: Ballyboden St. Enda’s vs Cuala Preview

The two giants of Dublin Senior Hurling will meet in the final of the championship. Cuala return for the fifth time in six years. Similarly, Ballyboden St. Enda’s, who last won in 2018, have been a regular in this fixture.

Click here for live scores from Dublin hurling final

After winning their first title in 2007, Ballyboden won a record five-in-a-row. Since then, two more titles in 2013 and 2018 have made them one of the most successful hurling teams in the county.

Likewise, Cuala boast seven titles. In addition to this, they went on to win the All-Ireland Club Championship in 2017 and 2018. As a result, this weekend’s final has some extra motivation as both teams aim to move ahead of the other for titles won.

Previously, Cuala shook off a strong semi-final challenge from Lucan Sarsfields. They were 0-5 to 0-1 down for a long time and Lucan held their lead until midway through the second half. Then, Sean Moran netted a goal for the holders just after the water break. Indeed, Cuala showed their experience in the final fifteen minutes by keeping Lucan scoreless. In the end, it was 1-17 to 0-13.

Meanwhile, Ballyboden St. Enda’s were six-point winners against Na Fianna. Similar to Cuala, they started slowly. Yet, they hit 1-9 in the second half to finish strongly. Paul Ryan’s penalty proved to be a comfort score in the end.

Now, Ballyboden St. Enda’s and Cuala play to decide who is the true big team in Dublin Hurling.

Dhá bhliain níos déanaí, bhí na foirne céanna sa chluiche ceannais agus theip orthu in athuair, ach le níos mó le spáráil ag na Mistéalaigh an t-am sin, 4-11 i gcoinne 0-9. An uair dheireanach a shroich foireann Bhréachmhaí an cluiche cinniúnach i 2018, bhí Baile an Tobair beagán chun cinn orthu ag an deireadh, agus gan ach aon phointe amháin idir na foirne, 0-12 v 1-08.

Beidh an cluiche beo ar TG4, ag tosú ar 3.35pm.

Kerry Hurling Club Final: Causeway vs Kilmoyley Preview

On Sunday, the Kerry Club Hurling Final comes around. This year, Causeway return to defend their title. Against them, Kilmoyley are out for their first Championship since 2016.

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORES FROM KERRY HURLING FINAL

A victory would make Kilmoyley tied as the most successful hurling Club in the county with twenty-five titles. After winning two-in-a-row in 2015 and 2016, Kilmoyley failed to win the 2018 final. On that occasion, they lost to Lixnaw.

Meanwhile, Causeway aim to add to their eight Championships. Last year, they won by a goal to lift the Neilus Flynn Cup.

Both of these sides won respectably in their semi-final ties. Firstly, Kilmoyley had an eight-point cushion over Abbeydorney. The result was 1-20 to 1-12. Likewise, Causeway overcame Ballyduff without major difficulty. That one ended 1-19 to 0-11.

This means this year’s Kerry Hurling Final throws up two teams who won’t know a lot about each other. Their stable defences could be winning and losing of this game. On the whole, this matchup looks guaranteed to entertain.

Turloughmore are the favourites to go through against Loughrea. They topped Group 2 with strong performances, regardless of losing a game to Clarinbridge. On the other hand, Loughrea qualified as Group 1 runners up thanks to their points difference. Being underdogs in this game could work in their favour. With nothing to lose, expect them to bring the game to Turloughmore.

Tipperary Hurling Final Preview Kiladangan vs Loughmore

     KILADANGAN             VS            LOUGHMORE

Loughmore-Castleiney vs Kiladangan. Sun 20th September Semple Stadium Thurles @ 2.00 pm. Live on TG4.

Click for live score updates from Tipperary county final

Has Kiladangan’s time finally, arrived?  Finalist’s three times in the last five seasons they have been a model of consistency in the Premier County. if they are to get their hands on Tipperary’s Dan Breen, they will need to overcome formidable opponents in Loughmore Castleiney

The paths to the final have been somewhat contrasting with Kiladangan rarely troubled. They were paired in Group 1 with JK Brackens, Drom-Inch, and Roscrea. They won all three fixtures without ever hitting top gear. In the last eight, Toomevara put up a brave resistance, but they crushed  Drom-Inch in the semi-final.

Loughmore had to emerge from the ‘Group of Death’  which included Moycarkey Borris, Thurles Sarsfields, and Kilruane MacDonaghs. They were soundly beaten by Pádraic Maher and Co, as Thurles ‘Sars’ topped the group. They survived courtesy of a nervy winner-takes-all clash with Kilruane – to advance to the last eight. Clonoulty-Rossmore were expected to be a real test in the quarter-final, but they folded meekly. In the semi-final, Loughmore brought their A-game when hammering a highly regarded Nenagh outfit. Incredibly they are on course for a double as they defeated a talented Moyle Rovers in the football semi-final. When you consider the small playing pool the parish has at its disposal, this is a remarkable feat.

Loughmore has lifted the cup on three occasions in 1988, 2007, 2013. They ended a famine in 2007 when lifting the cup after a 19-year hiatus: (1988-2007). For a team laden with talent, it is a poor return in terms of Tipperary senior titles. They love their hurling in Loughmore, but they love their football also. The marriage has not always been a smooth one, however. Keeping the show on the road week in-week out is a big ask. Noel and John McGrath are the standout players, They will be ably assisted by evergreen Evan Sweeney, John Maher, and younger McGrath sibling – Brian.

HISTORY BECKONS

For Kiladangan a historic first title beckons. They returned to Tipperary senior ranks in 2005. In the previous season, they captured the county intermediate title and Munster intermediate cup. They then famously won the all-Ireland intermediate title beating Carrickshock of Kilkenny, in a dramatic final in Thurles. The club confirmed the return to the top tier by capturing a first North Senior title in 65 years in 2008. They will want to avoid making history of a different kind, however. Lorrha (1905, 1948, 1956, 1966, 1984) lost the five Tipperary senior finals they competed in.

Kiladangan took a heavy beating from Thurles in 2016. They were off-color last year against Borrisileigh. They will be keen to avoid a third loss in three finals. County stars Willie Connors and Alan Flynn are key men. Alan’s brother Paul is also a Tipperary panelist. Under-20 star Billy Seymour and club stalwart Joe Gallagher can be expected to put in huge shifts also. Loughmore would dearly love to emulate their 2013 Tipperary double-act. Kiladangan’s rise in Tipperary has been relentless. Can they handle the burden of history? The first title is by nature always the hardest to win. Can they finally seize the day? It promises to be a classic as history beckons these two fine sides.

KILADANGAN  FINAL’S RECORD

2016 Thurles Sarsfields 0-27 Kiladangan 1-15

Mayo County Final 2020 Preview – Breaffy vs Knockmore

Breaffy have a chance to banish Championship demons

Breaffy GAA have long been a big team in the Mayo Senior Football Championship. This has been largely helped by their heavy contingent of county players. The three O’Shea brothers, Rob Hennelly, and the emerging Matthew Ruane are names widely known.

CLICK HERE FOR LIVE SCORES FROM MAYO FOOTBALL FINAL

However, they are yet to add a county championship to their CVs. Nonetheless, they have been knocking on the door for a long time. For example, Breaffy have featured in three of the senior championship finals since 2013. The most recent of these was in 2018.

Now, Breaffy are back in the final. Last weekend they saw off a strong Westport team to reach the fixture.

Furthermore, Aiden O’Shea’s team have had to work to get there. This was the second time they met Westport. In the opening round, they suffered a one-point defeat. Yet, they emerged from the group of death by defeating Castlebar Mitchels and Charlestown. Next, they showed severe resilience in beating 2019 finalists Ballaghaderreen at the quarter-final stage.

Breaffy have experience to call on

Aiden O’Shea usually takes the spotlight. Indeed, his form this year is perhaps deserving of it. In spite of this, brother Conor O’Shea has been prolific. Moving between midfield and full-forward, he has been a pest for oppositions. Additionally, Seamus O’Shea’s presence at centre-back brings security to the defence. Now 34, Seamus has not been slowed down by age.

Also, Rob Hennelly in goals has the ability to find any area of the pitch with his kick-outs. In fact, his dead ball expertise have led to some long-range scores when needed. In the engine room, U21 All-Ireland winner Matthew Ruane is showing why he should be considered for the county team.

Peter Ford and Shane Conway are at the helm this year. They have brought a determination to Breaffy that was perhaps absent in previous years.

Knockmore are the opposition for the final. They are no underdogs either. In fact, they dumped back-to-back winners Ballintubber from the competition in the quarter-final. Then, they convincingly overcame a heavily backed Ballina team in the semi-final.

Knockmore last featured in the final in 2016. On that occasion, they came out second best. As a result, they have their wrong to right this year.

Breaffy will be favourites to finally get over the line this year. However, they will be hoping that past demons won’t be back to haunt them.

Scottish Football Preview – Celtic vs Livingston

Celtic will look to return to the summit of the Scottish Premiership this weekend when they take on Livingston at home on Saturday.

Despite beating both Ross County (0-5) and St Mirren (1-2) away in their rescheduled double-header, the results were not as straight forward as Celtic manager Neil Lennon would have intended.

Ross County struck the woodwork twice and forced Vasilis Barkas into making some smart saves after some defensive mix-ups. At The Simple Digital Arena on Wednesday, St Mirren went ahead thanks to Lee Erwin who bundled in a Joe Shaughnessy header at the back post. The game would have been out of sight if it were not for some goalkeeping heroics by emergency loan signing Zdenek Zlamal who saved Odsonne Edouard’s penalty and a fine strike from Callum McGregor. Both of these matches have highlighted Celtic’s defensive frailties as Neil Lennon struggles to find his favoured starting eleven. Nevertheless, the firepower at the other end of the pitch has seen Lennon’s Celtic side win their last 4 consecutive matches as they look to catch their Old Firm rivals at the top of the table.

When Celtic welcomes Livingston to Celtic Park on Saturday they will look to continue their fine form and keep their defensive mishaps to a minimum. After resting both Jeremie Frimpong and Mohamed Elyounoussi midweek, it is anticipated that Neil Lennon will ring in the changes for the match on Saturday. Livingston will be looking for a positive result following their late defeat to Brian Rice’s Hamilton Accies side last Saturday. Livingston have never won at Celtic Park, with their last outing at Parkhead resulting in a 4-0 defeat.

As Livingston will be without striker Lydon Dykes following his record transfer move to Queens Park Rangers who caused Celtic’s defence so much trouble in the past, it is unlikely to see Livingston taking any points from this match. Scott Pittman’s attacking threat from Livingston’s midfield should not be underestimated by Lennon’s side as the midfielder is never shy to make forward runs. However, if Celtic can keep Livingston’s star man quiet, they should be in for a fairly comfortable afternoon. As Livingston will look to set up with five in midfield with Marvin Bartley sitting in front of the back 4, Celtic’s wide men will need to be on their game to break down a turgid Livingston side.

As Callum McGregor will look to continue his fine vein of form and the importance of Celtic’s wide men to break down a compact Livingston side, McGregor looks a good bet to be to score a goal. Livingston have failed to win away from home in their last 7 outings, whereas Celtic have scored at least 2 goals in 25 of their last 28 premiership matches. Celtic look comfortable for a 3-1 win come the final whistle at Celtic Park on Saturday.

Can Ireland’s Matt Doherty shine for Tottenham?

The Republic of Ireland right back Matt Doherty made his footballing debut for his new club Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The match ended in a dismal 0-1 home defeat for Spurs at the hands of a rejuvenated Everton. Doherty went into the game as one of Tottenham’s promising new signings, but head coach Jose Mourinho singled out the Irish star for ‘struggling to play the way you want him to play.’ All of which has meant that Doherty faces a tough challenge at his new club under the notoriously tough manager.

Tottenham signed Doherty to a four-year deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a £15 million fee on 30 August. It followed 10 successful years at Wolves where the defender scored 28 goals and created 41 assists. But it was Doherty’s intimidating defensive prowess that made him such a target for Spurs. The North London club have been experiencing problems with a leaky defence, and it was hoped that Doherty would plug the gap.

But on Sunday, Doherty proved to be unable to hold off dynamic Everton forwards such as Richarlison on the right flank. Tottenham’s head coach blamed Doherty’s lack of pre-season training for his lack of form on the pitch. Stating that the Irish star had gone straight from his holidays to two international matches, Mourinho said that, ’Today he was no Matt Doherty like he normally is.’ Two Nations League games for Ireland last week meant that Doherty wasn’t at peak fitness, and the defender was replaced in the 78th minute by Tanguy Ndombele.

Prior to this, the defender had actually had one of Tottenham’s best chances of breaking through the Everton defence. This saw Spurs’ star striker Harry Kane lobbing a beautiful short ball to Doherty who was unable to guide the ball into the back of the net. It would have been a glorious start for Doherty who came to a Tottenham side who have been desperate to make up for a relatively mediocre 2019/20 Premier League season. Doherty and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg are the two major names to have arrived at the club in the current summer transfer window.

While it was a flat performance, there is still plenty of hope that Spurs will turn around their form in the upcoming weeks. The team struggled in the early stages of last season, and with a serial winner like Jose Mourinho at the helm, it’s little surprise to find that many bookmakers will give Spurs short odds for winning some silverware this year. Any punter who had picked up a bonus from one of the betting resources like www.bettingtips.net will know that additions like Doherty will be key to giving Tottenham the stability at the back that the team lacked last season.

Spurs managed to beat Everton on the last meeting between the two sides, but Tottenham put on a seriously lacklustre performance this time around. It wasn’t just Doherty who came in for criticism from Mourinho. The Spurs manager went on to claim that the whole team were ‘lazy’. The fact that Tottenham failed to score a single goal will have been especially disappointing, and it gives added hope that Spurs will sign a new striker before the current transfer window ends. Harry Kane failed to receive much support up front against Everton, and while Doherty looked solid and encouraging, he was unable to provide the England striker with a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The Irish star was brought into the team after Serge Aurier proved to be inconsistent in the right back role last season. Doherty put in a good performance for Ireland against Finland last week, and its his ability to make key interceptions that will be critical for Tottenham’s counter-attack to flourish. But with the rest of the Spurs team looking lacklustre, it could be a tricky start for Doherty at his new club. Spurs travel to Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Thursday to start their Europa League campaign, and then they are away to Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday. All of which should give Doherty plenty of opportunity to show his new boss his true colours.
