Westmeath come into this game looking for their first win of the campaign. Shane O’Brien’s side face a very difficult assignment here. They lost to Galway 1-24 to 0-10 in the opening round, before succumbing to a 3-18 to 1-15 loss to Waterford two weeks ago. Players like Niall Mitchell, Killian Doyle, Eoin Price and Aonghus Clarke will be key to the Lake County chances here.

Cork come into the game on the back of one win and one loss under Kieran Kingston. They lost narrowly to Waterford in the opening round at Walsh Park 1-24 to 3-17. They beat All-Ireland champions Tipperary 2-24 to 1-25 last time out at Pairc Ui Chaoimh in an entertaining contest. Conor Lehane, Patrick Horgan and Declan Dalton will be key in attack. Damien Cahalane, Rob Downey and Colm Spillane will be key men in defence.

Carlow come into this game on the back of two losses from two games. They lost to Clare on the opening weekend by 16 points, 1-27 to 0-14. Colm Bonnar’s charges also lost to Kilkenny by a wide margin 3-21 to 0-09. They sit bottom of the table and really need a win here. However, they have quality players like Chris Nolan, Marty Kavanagh and James Doyle in attack. Damian English and Alan Corcoran will be key men in the defence.

Mattie Kenny’s side come into the game on the back of one win and one loss from two games. They were hammered by Kilkenny 3-21 to 0-18 in the opening round. They made amends for that defeat with a 4-18 to 2-17 win over Laois. Key players for Mattie Kenny will be Oisin O’Rorke, Mark Schutte and Donal Burke in attack. How Can Liverpool FC Improve

It may sound strange to ask the question, but is there any way that this Liverpool FC team can improve? The Reds are on course to win the Premier League title in 2020, ending a 30-year wait to be crowned as the best team in England. And they are set to do it in style.

At the time of writing, Liverpool are an astonishing 22 points clear of Manchester City having played 25 Premier League games. If they keep up their current pace, they will set a new Premier League points record, one season after they recorded the third highest Premier League points tally of all time; the same season in which they were crowned Champions of Europe.

This time round most Premier League fans were expecting another close battle between Jurgen Klopp’s side and last season’s champions Manchester City. But Liverpool have improved to a new level, catching most pundits and bookmakers off guard. In fact, many big brands like the William Hill betting markets have been affected by the team’s superior form and the Premier League, the most competitive domestic tournament in European football, has been turned into a procession.

In these circumstances, talking about an improvement from the soon-to-be-champions seems absurd. But in top flight football, no-one can afford to stand still, and Klopp’s relentless drive to produce the best possible team will ensure that Liverpool will leave no stone unturned as they aim to continue their dominance of English football, and maybe even to replicate their 1970s and 1980s legacy.

So how can this be achieved? Before any talk of strengthening or improving, there is the priority of ensuring that the big names stay at the club. Keeping their stars is a priority as there are plenty of clubs in Europe who would like to snatch the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane, not to mention rising stars such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

Most of the big name players are signed up until 2023 or 2024, but that doesn’t mean that they couldn’t be persuaded by the prospect of a new challenge, even if it does limit the number of clubs who could potentially afford to buy out their contracts. They will have contract decisions to make on about the likes of Adam Lallana, Georginio Wijnaldum and Adrian, whose current deals run out this summer or in 2021, but they could conceivably be replaced by better options.

So, what might those options be? Liverpool have a good reputation for transfer dealings and the club usually does good business by signing players from relegated clubs but there are very few players out there who would add something new to the existing line-up, particularly up front.

One of those players is Kylian Mbappe. The World Cup winner, rated as the world’s most exciting attacking talent, would easily slot into the Liverpool front three, either as a replacement for Mane or Salah, and Mbappe has been public in his praise for the Liverpool way of playing. But Mbappe is unlikely to be a target unless either Mane or Salah are on the way out as none of the trio would be prepared to play second fiddle.

That’s why it is more likely that any additional recruitment will focus on adding elements that the team currently lacks. An out and out goalscoring centre forward such as Timo Werner, the Leipzig and Germany striker, would be an interesting option, either as a replacement or an alternate for Roberto Firmino. An even more intriguing signing would be the former Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, who left Anfield early in Klopp’s tenure, and who has ended up Bayern Munich via Barcelona.

Of the three, Werner remains the most likely addition, but there is also room for strengthening the engine-room of the team, in midfield, where a dash more creativity and ball retention could help add a new dimension to the team, particularly in European competition. Talented young midfielder Kai Havertz one possibility, along with Bournemouth’s Harry Wilson and Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu are all viable targets as Klopp aims to continue his team’s evolution and domination.

Champions League 2019/20: Match Previews Feb. 18-19

The group stages have been resolved and the fixtures are in for the Round of 16 to begin on Feb. 18th.

Looking forward to the knock-out stages there remains ample opportunity for upsets, but frontrunners have already presented themselves. Find below previews for the first four scheduled matches coming up next week.

Borussia Dortmund v Paris Saint-Germain

Borussia Dortmund (GER)

UEFA Ranking: 14

2018-19 Finish: Round of 16

Qualification for the Champions League knock-out stages was a nervous road for Borussia, coming down to the outcome of FC Barcelona’s with Inter Milan. This stumble into qualification raises structural questions regarding the teams at times jittery defense and an over reliance on key players Roman Burki and Julian Weigl. However, the recent signing of Erling Haaland, a promising young scorer, suggests Lucien Favre’s team primarily consists of young talent and stars in the making. BVB will need to recoup their confidence and momentum in order to hold up against PSG next week.

Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)

UEFA Ranking: 7

2018-19 Finish: Round of 16

The French capital team enjoyed an exemplary performance in the group stages, starting with a 3-0 win over Real Madrid and remaining undefeated with only two goals conceded. Recently an underperforming side in the Champions League, Neymar has publicly said he believes this year could be their year. PSG is an underdog favourite among many, and the scoring power of Kylian Mbappé is there to justify it. Coming from a top spot in Ligue 1, the Parisians may very well surpass their best 94-95 quarter finals finish this year.

Odd (1X2): 2.8 / 3.8 / 2.25 @ William Hill

Atlético Madrid v Liverpool

Atlético Madrid (ESP)

UEFA Ranking: 4

2018-19 Finish: Round of 16

Atlético was likely unhappy with their being drawn against Liverpool this season. Their second place group stage finish behind Juventus has been attributed to shakiness in the defense, likely due to inexperience. Diego Simeone has had several of his veteran defenders sold off this year, and the loss of Antoine Griezmann has taken the edge off the counter-attack. If the Spaniards are to advance it will be by the strength of Joao Felix’s attack and the miraculous interventions of goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Liverpool (ENG)

UEFA Ranking: 8

2018-19 Finish: Winners

The Reds appear unstoppable, and the defending champions have seen a near perfect season thus far. It is already assumed they’ll take the Premier League title for themselves, and many credit Jurgen Klopp with grooming this once lackluster club into something to truly behold. Winning last year in Madrid, Klopp reported they occupied the home dressing room at Wanda Metropolitano and has wondered aloud if they could ask Atlético for that room again. With top scorers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane heading Liverpool’s attack, many expect the English side to advance past Atlético and perhaps to the finals once again.

Odd (1X2): 3.3/ 3.3 / 2.2 @ Betfair

Atalanta v Valencia

Atalanta (ITA)

UEFA Ranking: 56

2018-19 Finish: Europa League Play-offs

Despite beginning with three group stage losses, Atalanta has scraped their way into a first time Champions League qualification. Taking thrashings at Dinamo Zagreb and Shakhtar, they qualified as a distant second behind Manchester City. With their unsteady showing in Serie A this year as well, Gian Piero Gasperni’s club could be considered the weakest in the knock-out stages. A great deal will depend on returning Mattia Caldara and Golden Boot runner-up Duvan Zapata if Atalanta is to survive this tie.

Valencia (ESP)

UEFA Ranking: 25

2018-19 Finish: Group Stage

Valencia qualified this year at the top of the group, beginning their campaign with victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. After suffering a brutal 3-0 defeat to Ajax in Spain, an additional two draws and a victory stood between Valencia’s taking revenge on Ajax with a 1-0 win in Amsterdam. Their talented lineup features new additions Jasper Cillessen and Maxi Gomez but is counterbalanced with the loss of Neto and Zimone Zaza. While Valencia is expected to advance to the final eight (for the first time since 2007), if they are to progress further shrewd tactical decision-making will need to compensate for their lack of resources compared to other clubs.

Odd (1X2): 1.83 / 3.75 / 4.02 @ Bet-at-home

Tottenham v RB Leipzig

Tottenham Hotspur (ENG)

UEFA Ranking: 12

2018-19 Finish: Finals

Despite last season’s runner-up finish, the distance between the Spurs and champions Liverpool has drastically widened in the past year. A trailing performance in the Premier League with significant league losses led to the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino in favour of Jose Mourinho. Harry Kane has been confirmed in the North London lineup despite a persistent injury, while Wanyama has been surprisingly dropped from the squad. Ex-Benfica player Gedzon Fernandes has been signed to bolster the lineup in addition to efforts made to recruit forward Krzysztov Piatken from AC Milan. Tottenham faces an uphill battle against RB Leipzig, but there is time to recover momentum.

RB Leipzig (GER)

UEFA Ranking: 37

2018-19 Finish: Europa League Group Stage

In his first season as manager, Julian Nagelsmann has brought Leipzig their first Champions League qualification. A thoroughly young club, the squad sports many a young star meeting an English opponent for the first time. Emil Forsberg, Marcel Sabiter, and especially Timo Werner have carried the goal count. Leipzig’s high-octane, goal-obsessed playing style maximizes opportunities to score, and has proven them to be a rising force in Germany. Group stage victories over Benfica and Lyon ensure that Tottenham is not in for an easy tie.

Betting

Clare are massive 1/20 favourites here. while Laois are priced at odds of 9/1.  I can’t see Clare losing this if anything I can see a big hammering on the cards. Backing Clare -11 at 10/11 looks a great bet. There is no live coverage of Clare v Laois but keep an eye on our live scores.

Preview

Limerick come into this top of the table clash with two wins from two games. John Kiely’s side came back from the dead to beat Tipperary in the opening round and they followed that up with an 8 point win over Galway two weeks ago. Players like Barry Nash, Declan Hannon and Dan Morrissey will be key in defence, while Graeme Mulcahy, Gearoid Hegarty and Seamus Flanagan will be key players in attack.

Liam Cahill’s Waterford are also unbeaten in the division with two wins from two. They recorded a win over Cork in the opening round 1-24 to 3-17, while in the next round they recorded a 2-24 to 1-25 win over Tipperary. Players like Stephen Bennett, Shane Bennett, Austin Gleeson and Pauric Mahony will be key players.

Betting

Limerick are the favourites here at odds of 4/11. Waterford are outsiders at odds of 11/4. For me it has to be a Limerick win with the form they are in at present. Graeme Mulcahy at 8/1 to be first goalscorer looks a great bet. Limerick v Waterford is live on Eir Sport at 7pm.

Galway v Tipperary will meet in Division 1A of the hurling league on Sunday. The game throws in at 2pm. We have a preview, team news and betting information below.

Preview

Galway come into this game on the back of a loss to Tipperary last time out. Shane O’Neills charges lost 1-19 to 0-14 at the Gaelic Grounds. They beat Westmeath easily enough in the first game so a win here would be good for the plans to progress to a quarter-final or semi-final of the league. Joe Canning is likely to be fit for the game having picked up a hand injury in that game with Limerick. Players like Gearoid McInerney, Padraic Mannion, Conor Whelan and Cathal Mannion will be key.

All-Ireland champions Tipperary come into the game looking for the first win the of league. They currently sit joint bottom of the table with Westmeath. Liam Sheedy’s side have suffered losses to Cork 2-24 to 1-25 and Limerick 2-14 to 0-18. Sheedy need a performance here from his team and a winning one at that if they have any aspirations of doing well in the league. Players like John McGrath, Ronan Maher, Paidi Maher and Seamus Callanan will once again be key to the Premier men’s chances of coming away from Salthill with the win.

Team News

Galway: James Skehill, Darren Morrissey, Gearoid McInerney, Sean Loftus, Padraic Mannion, Shane Cooney, Fintan Burke, Cathal Mannion Adrian Tuohy, Niall Burke, Joe Canning, Tadhg Harnan, Sean Blehane, Conor Whelan, Conor Cooney

Tipperary : Brian Hogan; Cathal Barrett, Barry Heffernan, Sean O’Brien; Seamus Kennedy, Padraic Maher, Ronan Maher; Alan Flynn, Michael Breen; Jake Morris, John O’Dwyer, Cian Darcy; John McGrath, Seamus Callanan, Jason Forde

Betting

Galway are 6/5 to win this, while Tipperary are 10/11 to come out on top. For me it’s to close to call but Tipperary need a win and therefore they would be the selection. Jason Forde to get man of the match at around 8/1 is also a good bet. Galway v Tipperary is live on TG4 on Sunday.

England name training squad for Ireland game

England head coach has named a 25 man training squad in preparation for Sunday week’s Six Nations tie with Ireland at Twickenham.

Jones has called Henry Slade into the squad as he continues to recover from a knee. Furthermore, Manu Tuilagi will also continue his rehabilitation with a groin injury picked up against France. Tuilagi subsequently missed the Calcutta Cup meeting with Scotland on Saturday last due to the injury he has not been named in the squad, hence Slade’s inclusion. Many players play fun poker on mobile to pass the time.

Eddie Jones has also left out Courtney Lawes but according to RTE Sport he is been rested for the three day camp. In the backs, Elliott Daly, George Ford, Owen Farrell and Jonny May are just some players selected, while in the forwards Joe Marler, Tom Curry, Sam Underhill, Maro Itoje are just some to name that will take part in the camp.
