Ranking every Antonio Conte Chelsea signing

Ranking every Antonio Conte Chelsea signing

With news coming out of Tottenham that former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte will be taking over from recently sacked Nuno Espirito Santos, I have decided to look at his last spell in England and rank each signing he made.

Joining Chelsea in the summer of 2016, Conte changed the club’s fortunes around after the abysmal 2015-16 campaign, which saw manager Jose Mourinho lose his job and saw the previous year’s Premier League champions finish 10th.

Finding huge success with a back three, Conte led Chelsea to a Premier League title and two back-to-back appearances in FA Cup finals, winning one, his final game being the FA Cup after a win over Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. He was sacked soon after.

So here are all of Antonio Conte’s Chelsea signings, ranked from worst to best.

Ranking every Antonio Conte Chelsea signing

14) Danny Drinkwater

After Chelsea signed N’golo Kante from Leicester City in the summer of 2016 after his breakout year, they returned a year later with the ridiculous £35 million signing of Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater’s Chelsea career was summed up with one word as a ”shambles” by the player himself in a recent interview.

He has only made 23 appearances for the London club since his signing in 2017, scoring one goal and playing 90 minutes only 3 times in that timeframe.

He has since gone on loan at Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and now Reading. Garnering more attention for his off the field issues such as fighting outside nightclub’s, headbutting a team-mate while on loan at Aston Villa and starting a fight with a 16-year-old in an Under-23s match.

His contract expires next year and to say Chelsea will pass on his services is an understatement.

13) Tiemoué Bakayoko

After his strong performances in the 2016-17 season with Monaco that saw them reach the Champions League semi-finals, Bakayoko made the switch to West London for £40 million.

In his four seasons with the blues, he has made a mere 29 Premier League appearances in four seasons.

Like Drinkwater, he has since gone out on numerous loan spells, AC Milan, Monaco and Napoli have all taken him off Chelsea’s hands.

A player with huge potential, Bakayoko has turned out to be a massive disappointment.

12) Álvaro Morata

With Chelsea’s failed attempt to re-sign striker Romelu Lukaku in the 2017-18 summer transfer window. They turned to Real Madrid star Álvaro Morata in a deal worth £60 million.

After starting brightly, contributing to 12 goals in 12 games, he hit a ceiling, managing 5 goal contributions in 26 Premier League appearances.

Taking up the cursed number 9 for Chelsea, Morata suffered greatly with low confidence and with a handful of sitters to his name, he left for Atletico Madrid in 2019, with Chelsea managing to secure around the same amount they paid for him.

11) Eduardo

If you can’t remember who this guy was I wouldn’t blame you, but after three seasons at Chelsea, he did not make a single first-team appearance but managed to pick up a Premier League winner’s medal.

What a guy.

10) Ross Barkley

After failing to sign him during transfer deadline day in the summer of 2017, Barkley joined the club in January of 2018, for a low £15 million from Everton.

Struggling to find the form under Conte, the player gained some form under Maurizio Sarri and Frank Lampard before going out on loan to Aston Villa last term.

He has managed to impress current Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel enough to make him a part of the 22-man squad and has played his part so far this season when called upon.

9) Davide Zappacosta

After failing to sign his first choice full-back in Alex Sandro, Chelsea went for the cheaper option in David Zappacosta for £28 million from Torino.

Never a starter, Zappacosta was a bit-part player during his four seasons at Stamford Bridge but managed to pick up an FA Cup and Europa League medal in the process.

Simply put, if the players previously named never joined, he would be closer to the bottom.

8) Willy Cabellero

A cult figure among Chelsea fans, backup goalkeeper Willy Caballero did what he needed to do when he joined Chelsea for free from Manchester City in July of 2017.

The veteran penalty-stopper managed to displace out of form Kepa Arrizabalaga under Frank Lampard’s stewardship but has since left the club with an FA Cup, Europa League and most noticeably a Champions League medal.

7) Emerson Palmieri

Joining in the January transfer window, Emerson played back-up to Marcos Alonso for a reported fee of £20 million.

Playing sporadically during his time at Chelsea, he never quite managed to nail a starting place under Conte and Sarri.

With the arrival of Frank Lampard, he fell further down the pecking order with the arrival of first-choice left-back Ben Chilwell.

Emerson joined Ligue 1 side, Lyon, on a one-year loan in last summer’s transfer window and looks unlikely he will join back up with Chelsea next season.

6) Michy Batshuayi

Known more for being part of Chelsea’s infamous loan system, Batshuyai has done the best he could have given his circumstances.

Scoring 25 goals and 6 assists in 77 appearances in all competitions may not sound that impressive, he played second fiddle to Diego Costa and co throughout his Chelsea career.

The highlight of his Chelsea career is his winning goal to clinch the 2016-17 Premier League title at West Brom.

He is remarkably still on Chelsea’s books, but to be fair to the Belgian, he will be remembered compared to Chelsea’s past strikers.

5) Olivier Giroud

The target man Conte so desperately wanted in the 2018 January transfer window arrived after an £18 million deal from Arsenal.

Contributing to 53 goals in 119 appearances in his four seasons at the West London side, Giroud was a fan favourite and rightfully so.

The Frenchman showed professionalism and experience in his time at the blues.

He will go down as a cult figure at the club.

4) David Luiz

Returning to the club he was most associated with, David Luiz made the switch from PSG to Chelsea for £34 million in 2016.

After being placed in the middle of Conte’s back-three, Luiz soared to one of the top defenders in the country.

His first season back saw him win the Premier League title and secure a place in the PFA Team of the Year for 2016-17.

He went on to add an FA Cup and Europa League before leaving for Arsenal in 2019 after having disagreements with Frank Lampard, where he endured horribly for the most part.

3) Antonio Rudiger

What a turnaround for the German international. After some dodgy performances under Frank Lampard, the 28-year-old has proven his worth under Thomas Tuchel.

Becoming a no-nonsense defender who likes to play on the edge, Rudiger is one of the top defenders in England and in the world at the moment.

Being a major part of the Champions League-winning side of last season, Chelsea fans will hope the club sorts out his contract situation with many top European clubs circling for his signature.

2) Marcos Alonso

Alonso was signed by Chelsea along with David Luiz on transfer deadline day in 2016 for £23 million.

His signing was a key part of Conte’s success, with the Spaniard slotting in nicely to the left-wing back role.

Never the man for speed of strength, Alonso’s technique, free-kicks and overall reliableness to perform has still made him a key squad player to have around.

He always manages to survive with each transfer window and to that, you can only applaud his Michael Myers-like resilience

1. N’golo Kante

The little Frenchman has redefined the defensive midfield position that Claude Makelele made famous and for good reason.

Kante has been the beating heart of all of Chelsea’s success since his arrival in 2016, winning a Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Europa League and Super Cup for the Blues.

He has gone on to win numerous individual awards since his arrival in England and will go down as one of the greatest midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.

A wonderful footballer and an even better human being, N’golo Kante deserves all the love he gets.

Leeds transfer update: Bielsa looking for Swift and de Tomas

After what has been a lack-luster beginning to the Premier League season, manager Marcelo Bielsa is looking for new players in January

Bielsa was happy to bring home three points after the team’s win at the weekend. Leeds beat rock-bottom side Norwich City on Halloween afternoon.

Ireland’s Andrew Omobamidele got a comeback goal for the Canary’s but Raphinha and Rodrigo strikes were enough for the Whites to clinch a victory. This win now puts the club in 17th place level on points with Watford and Aston Villa.

With only two wins in ten matches, most Leeds fans will not be happy with their start of the season. Now the club will look for new signings in the winter transfer window to bolster their squad and fix their problems.

Raul de Tomas

Leeds will join a transfer battle with Tottenham Hotspur for Espanyol forward Raul de Thomas. The 27-year-old striker has made a big impression in La Liga in the last few seasons.

He has scored six goals and got two assists in 11 appearances so far this season. He has an estimated transfer value of just under €15 million so he could prove to be a good deal for the Yorkshire club.

Leeds’ main man Patrick Bamford spent much of the last few months on the injury table. This problem has taught Bielsa an important lesson in Premier League management. The Spaniard relied too heavily on Bamford last season and has not found a suitable replacement for him.

John Swift

Bielsa is also looking to improve his midfield line. The club has shown interest in signing Reading’s talismanic central midfielder Swift.

They will need to fight with Brentford and Newcastle for the Englishman’s signature. The 26-year-old has an estimated transfer value of just over €4 million but probably will go for more in January.

He has found the net eight times and provided six assists in 15 appearances in the Championship this year.

Swift would be a very welcome addition to Bielsa’s team, giving a much-needed rest to Dallas, Klich, and Rodrigo.

Slaughtneil and Glen set for Derry senior football showdown

Slaughtneil and Glen will contest this year’s Derry senior football championship final after their semi-final victories at the weekend.

Defending champions Slaughtneil emerged victorious from their mammoth clash with Lavey after extra time, a team that had beaten them in the group stage of the competition.

The Loup proved to be no match for Glen as they were blown away at Owenbeg in a 23-point defeat.

Slaughtneil survived their biggest test of the Derry county championship on Saturday, October 30 when they dispatched of Lavey, who had finished the group stage ahead of the champions.

Shane McGuigan and Christopher Bradley were on hand throughout the game to get some important scores for their side – the pair combined for 1-12 of their team’s 1-13.

The pacey and young Lavey side had the lead early on courtesy of a Hugh McGurk strike that found the back of the net.

Patsy Bradley was black-carded, like in the group clash but the fixture turned out differently for the holders.

McGuigan got a goal for his side with a penalty and put his side in firm control of the tie after the side outscored their opponents by 1-5 to 0-2 following McGurk’s goal.

However, Lavey fought back and got three scores that crescendoed in an Eamon McGill equaliser that hit the net just moments from time to force the extra 20 minutes.

Yet, they could not keep up with Slaughtneil, who showed why they’re champions against a side who finished the game with 14 players under 24.

Elsewhere at Owenbeg on Sunday, Glen’s audition for a spot in the final was more than enough as they took down The Loup with ease.

Their well-drilled system kept a high-scoring Loup side to a low score as Malachy O’Rourke’s men made their semi-final look easy.

The winners of Group A had been firing on all cylinders in attack but leaking scores at the back heading into this game and O’Rourke and co. made them pay for it.

Glen now head into the Derry county final with an outrageous +81 point difference (130 points for, 49 against) after six games and their momentum could carry them even further.

Mack Hansen joins up with Ireland squad ahead of Japan game

Connacht winger Mack Hansen has joined up with Andy Farrell’s Ireland squad ahead of their Autumn Nations Series clash with Japan on Saturday afternoon.

The Irish qualified winger has been a revelation for the Western province since joining the side from the Brumbies in the summer.

The 23-year-old, who previously lined out for the Australian U20 team, has scored four tries in five games at Connacht.

The pacey back has beaten 25 defenders and made 321 metres, both the most in the United Rugby Championship so far this season.

On top of this, his seven clean breaks are the second-most in the league, tied with Glasgow Warriors’ Rufus McLean and one behind Scarlets star Steff Evans.

Leinster centre Robbie Henshaw will continue his rehab programme under the direction of the Ireland medical team.

Thomas Ahern (Munster) and Jamie Osbourne (Leinster) have returned to their respective provinces having trained with the squad last week.

The Ireland v New Zealand fixture on Saturday, 13th November is sold out while tickets remain available for both the Japan and Argentina games.

Tyrone SFC final set as Dromore and Coalisland Na Fianna progress

Tyrone GAA

The 2021 LCC Tyrone Senior Football Championship final has its challengers as Dromore and Coalisland Na Fianna won their semi-finals at the weekend to book their spots in the county’s biggest club fixture.

Dromore took down favourites Trillick on live television on Saturday night, with a two-point cushion enough to see them into their first county final since 2012, despite conceding two goals.

Coalisland Na Fianna produced one of the comebacks of the club season as they chased down a six-point lead in the final quarter to bring themselves within one game of silverware.

Dromore started off as the better side in their semi-final clash with Trillick with seven points and no reply.

However, Trillick fought their way back into the game after a Lee Brennan free finally got them on the scoresheet and the side built on from it.

Brennan played in Simon Garrity for the team’s first goal after an impressive run from deep.

The Trillick full-forward was on hand again to score the second goal for his side after Dromore goalkeeper Mark McGale’s poor kickout.

The St Macartan’s side went in at the half with a two-point lead but some stellar defence from their opposition kept them scoreless after 39 minutes.

After Trillick had improved their lead to five points, the Blues revived themselves and veteran Peter Teague started the comeback.

Emmett McNabb capped off an impressive day with several points in the second half to bring his individual tally up to five while the defensive unit kept the young Trillick forwards at bay.

Coalisland Na Fianna scored three goals in the last eight minutes of their semi-final against Errigal Ciarán to take their place in the Tyrone county final.

Errigal looked set to progress after holding their opponents scoreless from play for 50 minutes but were instead left shell-shocked as they fell to a side who finished the game with 13 men.

Michael McKernan had already walked before Peter Herron suffered the same red-coloured fate for the 2018 county champions.

Cormac O’Hagan’s place-kicking had kept the side within a sniff of their opponents and quick-fire goals from Jason Carberry, Tiarnan Quinn and Brian Toner set the game alight.

Errigal stuttered in attack and O’Hagan buried the winning free late on to seal one of the most incredible comebacks of the year and earn themselves a date with Dromore – the O’Neill Cup being the prize for the winner.

Rodgers and Barnes lament poor start as Leicester lose to Arsenal

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers and winger Harvey Barnes have singled out the side’s poor start as the reason for their 2-0 loss to Arsenal in front of their home fans.

Two goals in the first 20 minutes saw the Foxes’ five-game unbeaten streak come to an end, despite finding their way into the game later on.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Emile Smith-Rowe took advantage of a sluggish opening from Leicester and helped Arsenal to take control of the fixture early on.

“A poor start cost us,” Rodgers told LCFC TV. “It’s a lack of concentration and then you’re chasing the game against a good side.

“We’ve been able to do it in a few games recently where we’ve not bad a great start and come back, but you can’t give teams a 2-0 start, especially a good team like Arsenal.

“We had to make changes to shift the dynamic of the game, but we got punished for that opening 20 minutes.

“We were too passive, so it is a concern. When you have players finding the level and the constant mentality, if you don’t start the game well, then it can cost you and today it cost us. In the second half, we can’t have any complaints. I thought we were excellent.

“We had to make changes to shift the dynamic of the game, but we got punished for that opening 20 minutes. Both [Harvey Barnes and Ademola Lookman] were excellent.

“They gave us that pressure higher up the pitch. We could condense the game up there and we were much better.”

Harvey Barnes spoke of his disappointment after the side’s defeat to the North London team: “It’s a disappointing one for us. Obviously, the first half, as a team, we weren’t good enough and we gave ourselves a big task going into the second half.

“We performed a bit better in the second half, but we couldn’t get the goal to get us back in the game. It’s a disappointing day.”

St Eunan’s complete Donegal senior hurling double with win over Setanta

St Eunan’s completed a historic Donegal senior hurling league and championship double for the first time in almost 50 years when they defeated Setanta by a point at O’Donnell Park in the county championship final on Saturday.

They defeated the Killygordon side in the fixture at the third time of asking, winning 2-9 to 0-14 after falling short in the two years previous.

The Eunan’s defence stood strong after the Cathedral town men started off the strongest of the two sides and held onto the lead for the duration of the game to earn the side their first Donegal SHC title since 1972.

The two goals that the Letterkenny team scored proved to be key as no individual player had more than one score from play for the side.

A Russell Forde goal had helped give Eunan’s a six-point lead before Setanta had got their first score.

The side from Killygordon got into the game eventually but the challengers’ defence and some inspirational scores gave them a half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-5.

Setanta started the second half strongly and were beginning to reel Eunans in but a super team goal that saw the sliothar in seven Eunans players’ hands ended with Kevin Kealy striking to the net.

Previous to this, goalkeeper Cian Hennessey had saved Eunan’s blushes with several important stops.

Their second goal returned their lead to six points and the defending champions rallied once more to get within a point of Eunans.

However, heroic work from the 14 Letterkenny men behind the sliothar saw the side hold out for their first SHC triumph in 49 years.

The shock win on Saturday brought an end to Setanta’s dominant two-year reign in the competition.

The championship victory is the icing on top of a fantastic year for the side, who had previously won the league in July.

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita sidelined once again

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is set to miss the club’s second home UEFA Champions League game of the season against Atletico Madrid after failing to play the full 90 minutes against Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.

The Liverpool No.8 had to be withdrawn during the first half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion due to a hamstring injury, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming on in his place.

The substitution took place just 19 minutes into the game and the Guinean’s latest injury follows Paul Pogba’s woeful tackle on the midfielder in the 5-0 win over Manchester United the Sunday previous.

Keita will undergo a scan on the issue to determine its severity, but Klopp does not anticipate the midfielder can be involved versus Atletico.

“He told me, he showed me [the] hamstring,” Klopp said to Liverpoolfc.com post-match. “So, I don’t know, we will see; obviously tomorrow [or] the day after tomorrow he will have a scan and then we will know.

“But if somebody feels the hamstring, it would be the first time that he is ready for the next game. So, I can’t see that.”

Keita has already missed 54 games for Liverpool due to injury in his time with the club, amassing 14 injuries over three years in red, with this hamstring injury set to add to that.

The large number of injuries does not include the knock that he recovered from in time to face Brighton.

Liverpool currently have three fit midfielders in their squad – Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

19-year-old Tyler Morton, who celebrated his birthday on Halloween, is also available for selection, having been named on the bench for Saturday’s game.

It remains to be seen whether Thiago Alcantara or Fabinho will be deemed fit for the match against the Spanish champions.

Thiago Alcantara joined in on Thursday’s session as he continued his recovery from a calf injury but was not named in the matchday squad at the weekend.

Fabinho’s knee issue kept him out of the clash with Graham Potter’s Seagulls – it is the third game in a row that Liverpool did not have him at their disposal.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds face Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, November 3 at 8 pm.

Energia Men’s All-Ireland League Round-Up – Round 4

Defending Energia Men’s All-Ireland League champions Cork Constitution ended their three-match losing run with a 32-13 bonus-point win over Dublin University in Round 4.

A week on from his first senior start at out-half for Munster, Jack Crowley was back in club colours in the All-Ireland League – playing at full-back – and he was at the heart of Con’s strong start at Temple Hill.

He touched down out wide in the 14th minute after being set up by a roaming Sean French, who had caught a clever Duncan Williams kick. Greg Higgins, French and former captain Niall Kenneally also touched down for Brian Hickey’s men.

Ulster Academy forward Harry Sheridan strode over late on for Trinity’s lone try, while Leinster’s Jack Dunne and Rob Russell got some more game-time for the students.

Conor Hayes continues to light up Division 1A this season, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Young Munster overcame Lansdowne 24-20 on the Aviva Stadium’s main pitch.

Hayes, the strongly-built former Connacht Eagles winger, finished Saturday’s epic encounter with 17 points, including a crucial 63rd-minute try which saw him combine out wide with Patrick Campbell.

Lansdowne fought back from 17-3 down to lead 20-17 – Leinster pair Peter Dooley and Cormac Foley both crossed the whitewash – but the Cookies prevailed to make it four wins on the trot.

Replacement Jack Milligan’s late penalty earned Ballynahinch a losing bonus point against Garryowen, who triumphed 27-22 to stay top of the table. Hooker Pat O’Toole (2) and Munster flanker Jack Daly claimed the tries for the Light Blues.

Clontarf hooker Dylan Donnellan grabbed a hat-trick of tries in their 29-14 comeback victory at Terenure College. Converted scores from Alan Bennie and Colm de Buitléar had ‘Nure in front, but ‘Tarf finished strongly with replacement Adrian D’Arcy registering their bonus point.

Despite UCC winger Matthew Bowen’s brilliant hat-trick, which included a 90-metre intercept effort, UCD opened their win account at Belfield where Munster’s Paddy Patterson (2) and Leinster Academy flanker Sean O’Brien both touched down in a 40-31 bonus point success.

Highfield and Old Wesley continue to lead the way in Division 1B, with Shane O’Riordan’s 78th-minute penalty guiding the Corkmen to a tense 20-17 victory at Malone.

Winger Tommy O’Callaghan touched down twice as Old Wesley won 36-20 at Naas, while St. Mary’s College, who had a hat-trick from classy centre Myles Carey, ended City of Armagh’s winning start with a superb 35-13 bonus point triumph.

Munster’s Jake Flannery shone at out-half in Shannon’s 32-10 dismissal of Old Belvedere. He scored two tries and kicked 12 points.

Full-back Paddy Fox’s brace of tries propelled Navan past Banbridge on a 30-20 scoreline, as the sides swapped places at the bottom of the table.
