Kilmallock v Patrickswell – Limerick SHC final Preview

The Limerick SHC final goes ahead this weekend with the surprise climactic match up of Kilmallock and Patrickswell

The SHC final throws in at 15:45 on Sunday, 24th October in the TUS Gaelic Grounds. Referee Eamon Stapleton will take charge of the tie.

The match will be shown live on the TG4 show GAA BEO with coverage starting at 15:15 on Sunday.

Kilmallock took the long route to reach this final. After they finished in second place to Na Piarsaigh in the group, narrowly beating out Ballybrown, the south sided team beat ‘A’ final runners up South Liberties.

Last week the team needed a very spirited and powerful display to knock out Doon with a scoreline of 4-20 to 2-16.

Freetaker Michael Houlihan will be an important part of the scores in this final. He will also need help from the forward partnership of Oisin O’Reilly and Graeme Mulcahy in order to claim silverware.

Patrickswell followed a similar path to their opponents after finishing second in the group behind Doon. Subsequent victories against ‘A’ final winners Adare and favorites Na Piarsaigh go them to the big stage.

That win against the current titleholders was very impressive, grinding out a five-point lead in the later stages of the match to win.

Tobar Padraig is a club made of a few of Limerick’s new golden generation and they will be hungry for another trophy.

Gymnastics Ireland CEO reacts to McClenaghan WGC exit

Irish gymnastics athlete Rhys McClenaghan finished competition on Wednesday morning after a long Covid-19 related delay at the World Gymnastics Championships with a score of 13.766.

One of the competitors at the event tested positive for the coronavirus and the athletes were forced to wait for all protocols to be carried out.

McClenaghan took to the pommel horse after the delay but slipped towards the end of his routine, which ended hopes of an appearance in the final.

The Antrim native had previously missed out on a medal at Tokyo 2020 earlier this summer due to a mistake.

Speaking about Rhys McClenaghan’s performance in today’s men’s qualifiers, Gymnastics Ireland CEO Mr Ciaran Gallagher said: “It was a difficult subdivision for Rhys McClenaghan out in Japan this morning, and indeed for all the other gymnasts in his sub as a Covid-19 related issue led to over an hour delay to the competition.

“The tight covid protocols and response to any covid related matter from the Japanese gov/organisers are of course completely understandable however of course this kind of impact mid-event is felt by all the gymnasts.

“As ever, Rhys pushed through his routine in difficult circumstances and was unlucky not to final on this occasion.

“We all know what he is capable of and are all incredibly proud to have him fly the flag so well for Ireland/Gymnastics Ireland.

“With this being the last major event in 2021 Rhys, our National Coach Luke and Performance & Technical Manager Sally will now refocus on 2022 as the campaign towards Paris 2024 begins next year.”

Ireland still have skin in the game at the World Championships in Japan as Emma Slevin is preparing to compete in the Women’s All-Around final.

The final will take place on Thursday morning from 9:55 am and will be available to watch live on the RTÉ Player.

Chelsea v Malmo FF – Preview, Betting, Probable Starting Teams

Now in round three of the Champions League groupstage and Chelsea will be looking to bounce back against Swedish opposition

Chelsea v Malmo FF will kick off at 20:00 tonight, the 20th of October in Stamford Bridge. French referee Francois Letexier will take charge of the match.

The Blues are finally fully back to their winning ways but are still not convincing. Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy put in a Man of the Match performance to beat Brentford 2-1 at the weekend.

Manager Thomas Tuchel will now want a strong win in the Champions League. Last time they lost to Juventus in a weak, poor display. They sit in second place on goal difference in the group, a win will be vital now to their progression.

Malmo are the best that Sweden has to offer. They currently are perched on top of their league having won their last two games.

European football has not been as easy for them this season. They are yet to score a goal having lost 3-0 to Juventus and 4-0 to Zenit St Petersburg.

Jon Dahl Tomasson and his team will need a win tonight or they will be left too far adrift to save their campaign in Europe.

It is very rare that these two sides face each other. They last met in the Europa League qualifiers in 2019 where the Blues won 5-1 on aggregate. That victory included a 3-0 victory at home for the London club.

Chelsea v Malmo FF Match Betting

Chelsea to win: 1/14

Draw: 2/1

Malmo FF to win: 30/1

Score Prediction

There is nearly no point in thinking that Malmo could cause an upset against the Blues away from home. Chelsea will win this game but it will be interesting to see by how much.

If Tuchel decides to play a strong side then they could easily keep a clean sheet while inflicting a heavy scoreline.

Expect this game to end 4-0 to Chelsea.

Sri Lanka v Ireland – Preview, Squads, Where To Watch

Ireland play Sri Lanka on Wednesday, October 20 in the second of three games in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup group stage.

Both sides won their first games in Group A and will be aiming to continue their strong starts and put one foot into the Super 12.

Ireland dismantled the Netherlands courtesy of some fantastic bowling – Curtis Campher took four wickets in four balls and the ever-consistent Mark Adair got three of his own.

The target of 106 was light work for the Irish as they surpassed it with 29 balls left to win their first match of this year’s T20 World Cup.

At a press conference on Monday night, Head Coach Graham Ford said: On Sri Lanka, probably about half the squad I know pretty well, and the coach I know very well.

“We know they are going to be a very competitive and energetic unit – they have had previous successes in this format in previous years and previous T20 World Cups.

“So, it will be a huge game for us, but I think it will be a really exciting challenge – we’ll focus on going out and really enjoying this opportunity.

Sri Lanka did not even need 75% of their overs to be victorious over Namibia in their first game.

The Namibians managed only 96 runs in the T20 World Cup debut before the tenth wicket in the final over.

The 2014 T20 World Champions reached triple digits after 13.3 overs to end the match early.

Maheesh Theekshana led the team with three wickets while Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Avishka Fernando went unbeaten at-bat to seal the win.

They have a special group – and have some players that can do some unorthodox stuff – but our lads have a lot of information on them, and at the end of the day, it will be all about how we play on the day.

“We pitched up against the Netherlands with a real positive energy and commitment, and if we bring that again on Wednesday then we give ourselves a good chance.”

Squads

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (C), Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Wanindu Hasaranga, Avishka Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dushmantha Chameera, Akila Dananjaya, Dhananjaya De Silva, Binura Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Kusal Perera, Maheesh Theekshana.

Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie (C), Mark Adair, Gareth Delany, Joshua Little, Kevin O’Brien, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Benjamin White, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Andy McBrine, Neil Rock, Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Where To Watch

The match will start at 3 pm and will be available to watch on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Cricket – coverage begins at 2:30 pm.

You can keep track of the live score on the ICC website and Cricket Ireland will provide Twitter updates throughout the match.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United will go head-to-head on the Gameweek 9 of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

This game will be an interesting game for both teams. The last time these two sides met was last February where Palace came out 1-2 victors at St James’s Park. With both Palace and Newcastle gaining a win over each other in the 2020/2021 season.

Crystal Palace Retrospective

Palace currently sits 14th, with 1 win, 2 losses and 5 draws. 8 points from a possible 21 were to be expected after a change of manager, especially from a manager like Patrick Vieira.

In their last game, Palace played brilliantly against London rivals Arsenal, coming from behind to lead 1-2, only to concede in the last minute of injury-time to an Alexandre Lacazette equalizer.

Newcastle United Retrospective

After their massive Saudi led takeover, Newcastle lost their first game under new ownership after a 2-3 home loss to Tottenham on Sunday.

Since then Steve Bruce has been sacked and the club will be led on an interim basis.

The club currently sits second from bottom in 19th position. Winless after eight league games, with 3 draws and 5 losses so far.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between Crystal Palace and Newcastle United will kick off at 3 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday, 23 October 2021, at Selhurst Park.

Where to watch Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

The game will not be televised live on any UK platforms.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United team news

For Palace, Nathan Ferguson is out with a shin injury with no return day. While Eberechi Eze is suffering from lower leg problems and will be ruled out long-term.

Wilfried Zaha could make an appearance after suffering a small knock.

Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey will miss the game from suspension after picking up two yellow cards against Tottenham.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is out with a foot injury, while Paul Dummett (Calf) and Freddie Woodman (Muscular) are out with no return date.

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United prediction

Palace will be more than up for this game after squabbling away a crucial 3 points in their last game against Arsenal.

While Newcastle’s preparations will surely be all over the place after Steve Bruce’s dismissal.

I can only see a Palace win here.

Prediction: 3-1 Crystal Palace.

Newcastle United Sack Steve Bruce

Newcastle United Sack Steve Bruce

Newcastle United have sacked head coach Steve Bruce.

Rumours have been persisting for weeks of Bruce’s dismissal after the Saudi Arabian-backed consortium, led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed a £305m takeover of Newcastle on October 7th.

The 60-year-old Bruce was in the dug-out for his side’s 2-3 home defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, which was his 1,000th match as a manager.  With non-executive chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and director Amanda Staveley in the stands at St. James’s Park.

The defeat to Tottenham was Newcastle’s 5th league loss of the season, with the club second from bottom, winless after their opening eight games of the campaign.

Now, it has been confirmed that Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent, with the club confirming this in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A club statement read;

Newcastle United can confirm that Steve Bruce has left his position as head coach by mutual consent.

He leaves the Magpies after more than two years in charge, having steered the club to 13th and 12th-place finishes in the Premier League and reaching the quarter-final stage in both the Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup during his tenure.

Newcastle United would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future.

A statement was also released from Bruce after his departure from Tyneside;

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

Assistant coach Graeme Jones will take charge of the squad on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be joined by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Rhys McClenaghan left frustrated in World Championships

Antrim gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has failed to progress from the qualifiers at the World Gymnastics Championships in Japan this morning

It was a difficult day for the Irishman and for many today in the Gymnastic Arena in Kitakyushu. Rhys McClenaghan had to wait a long period before he got his chance to take to the pommel horse.

One of the other competitors at the event had tested positive for Covid-19 that morning and subsequently all equipment in the Arena.

This was the 22-year-old’s chance to make up for an unfortunate mistake that led to him missing out on a medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

When McClenaghan finally took to the pommel horse, he started well. He got through his tough routine swiftly using his good physical strength to control himself.

Unfortunately, the Irishman slipped towards the end of his routine and that would prove very costly this morning. He scored 13.766 which would not be enough to reach the final stage.

McClenaghan took to Twitter to share his disappointment and frustration:

“I’m sad I trained until this point just to have the chalk wiped off the equipment and been told to wait 1 hour 30 mins before I competed due to a competitor in the subdivision before testing positive for Covid.

“Time to go home and just hope there’s not another Worlds like this one.”

This ends a very disappointing year for the Antrim man. Still only 22, he will have plenty of time to grow his trophy cabinet at the World Championships and Olympic Games.

In his last World’s two years ago in Stuttgart, he claimed a bronze medal.

There is still a chance for Ireland in the World Championships

This is not the end for Irish hopes in Japan as Galway teenager Emma Slevin has reached the women’s All-Around final. That event will be shown live on RTE Player at 10:00 on Thursday 21st October in what could be a momentous day for Irish gymnastics.

Limerick hurler Cian Lynch on the cusp of a ‘special’ achievement

Limerick senior hurler Cian Lynch is one game away from completing a historic county and inter-county double as the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship nears its climax.

Lynch’s club Patrickswell will take on Kilmallock in the county final on Sunday, October 24, held at the Gaelic Grounds.

The 25-year-old midfielder has won the county title once previously but is yet to do so in the same year as an All-Ireland victory.

A Cian Lynch-led Patrickswell sealed the Limerick crown in 2019, which is wedged between three All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship victories for the Treaty County.

“Obviously, it’d be special and I suppose everyone tries to go out with the same aim at the end of the day,” Lynch said at the launch of John West Féile 50th anniversary celebrations.

“For us, it’s not about looking beyond this week, d’you know, looking beyond the training sessions that we have because we know Kilmallock have huge strength in depth and they are a massive team…so we just have to focus on ourselves.”

Earlier this year, Limerick retained the All-Ireland title for the first time in their history with a dominant performance against Cork that can only be described as ‘total hurling’.

The famed fitness of this Limerick side was on full display as they never put their foot off the gas, racing into a 13-point lead after 35 minutes, with three goals to their name.

The side ended the match with a points record for an All-Ireland final and had increased their lead by three when the final whistle was blown.

The Limerick number nine picked up the Man of the Match award for his impact on the game and scored six points on the day.

Lynch credits his Limerick teammates and the county backroom for helping him to reach such high levels.

“I suppose the lads around you as well [as the backroom], d’you know. It’s not only the 15 lads on a given day that have the opportunity to start games.

“I suppose there are 16 other lads on the panel that push you and you keep pushing each other and I suppose that’s what makes it look special.”

Lynch will be hoping to be part of another special team performance on Sunday with his club.

It’s a game that his mind is firmly set on preparing for and his demeanour is calm and assured when speaking of it.

“All we can do is focus on ourselves and get the best out of ourselves.”

Patrickswell and Kilmallock will play for the John Daly Cup on Sunday at 3:45 pm in a match that will be broadcasted on TG4 as part of a double-header.

Kit Clashes Between Red and Green Teams Will Be Banned From The 2027 Rugby World Cup

The world rugby lawmakers are set to introduce new laws for the 2027 World Cup tournament, banning red-green kits to help people struggling with color vision deficiency. This new measure means that Ireland and Wales will need to change their Jerseys if they’re slotted to go against each other in future fixtures. Fortunately, the new laws will not affect betting on rugby with Odds Shark, although that comes in handy for players and fans suffering from CVD.

Over 300 million people worldwide are suffering from some type of color vision deficiency, although the condition is more prevalent in men. That’s considering that one in twelve men globally are affected by this condition, but only one in 200 women are affected by CVD.

Red-green color vision deficiency is the most popular form of color blindness, reported by about 0.5% of female rugby fans and 8% of male supporters. According to World Rugby Research and turf manager Marc Douglas, there is a huge percentage of people switched off by limiting about 8% of the male audience.

The World Rugby lawmakers have identified seven areas that can be challenging for color-blind people. These areas include kit clashes, stadium and ticket information, equipment colors, workplace issues, and external Information like emergency services and sponsorship.

The World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont announced the new measures earlier last month on Color-Blindness Awareness Day. Sir Beaumont acknowledged that color blindness is highly misunderstood and the challenges for players, officials, coaches, and fans are often overlooked.

Beaumont also revealed that he was delighted by the World Rugby organization making these adjustments on the Color Blindness Awareness day this year, considering that he experiences these challenges firsthand. Beaumont also hopes that this guide will help increase the awareness towards color-blindness and hopes it will help change the culture with positive actions that address more than those obvious challenges like kit colors. That might help consider all aspects of the match-day experience whether it’s digital signage, wayfinding, ticketing, or branding.

Highlighting the issues of those affected by CVD, Scotland’s Rugby ambassador Chris Paterson recalled how tricky it was playing for Edinburgh and the Scarlets would show up wearing their dark red jerseys. That was hard for Chris as he would run straight into two opponents thinking it was his own men while trying to make a line break to complete a counterattack. The main problem with that is that a player’s main focus is on the ball while running and trying to scan the whole field as there’s no real division in your eyes.

As the World Rugby lawmakers point out, around two players are struggling with color blindness in each men’s rugby squad. Unfortunately, ruby is a fast-paced sport, and not being able to immediately distinguish the colors can have serious consequences.

According to Rugby player Mike Blair (who won over 80 caps for Scotland and the current coach for Edinburgh), he realized that he had color blindness issues at about eight years old. That started his problems early as his brothers wouldn’t tell him whether he was aiming for the red or brown snooker while they were playing until it was too late.

As a professional rugby player, Blair hid his color blindness from most people. However, Blair says the reason behind that wasn’t because he felt embarrassed, but because he didn’t think it was relevant for everyone to know about his condition.

Looking back at the situation, Blair is wondering whether he ought to have been more demanding about the colors that he and his opponents wore in games, given the confusion it occasionally caused him. That’s considering that changing the kit colors isn’t a hard thing for clubs to do, although it can be hard for players suffering from color blindness. That’s because they have no idea of how the world would look like in a clear vision.

The main aim of designing team kits is to help the players’ visibility. That explains why football manager Alex Furgerson made Manchester United change their grey jerseys during half-time in 1996 due to claims that they couldn’t recognize each other while playing, which is crucial while making passes in a game. That’s especially true when players rely on their peripheral vision, which isn’t naturally very accurate in discerning colors over central vision.

The main applications of the new color-blindness laws in rugby are:

  • Kit clashes – with match officials, other players, the pitch color, and crowds in the stands
  • At grounds – with wayfinding, facilities, types of lighting, and safety signage
  • Equipment – bibs, training cones, and classroom training
  • TV coverage – “Invisible” advertisement, logos, and inaccessible graphics
  • Information – purchasing tickets, websites, and buying merchandise
  • Workplace issues – technical equipment, presentations, understanding color-coded spreadsheets, graphs, and charts
  • External stakeholders (Sponsors, investors, emergency services & media organizations) – making sense of color information given
