2020 Donegal SFC Final To Be Replayed Following Appeal

The 2020 Donegal Senior Football Championship final between Naomh Conaill and CLG Chill Chartha (Kilcar) will be replayed following a successful appeal from the latter, who lost the initial final.

The replay will take place on Wednesday, September 8th at 8 pm in Páirc Sheáin Mhic Cumhaill in Ballybofey.

Kilcar lodged an appeal after their penalty shoot-out loss to Naomh Conaill claiming that the victors used too many substitutes in the extra 20 minutes.

Naomh Conaill won the game after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory against Kilcar on Saturday, August 14 and lodged their appeal three days later.

Rule 2.4(ii) of the GAA’s official guide says that only three substitutes can be used in extra-time – Kilcar claimed that their opponents used four in this period and Donegal GAA’s Competitions Controls Committee found this to be true.

In correspondence to the clubs, Donegal explained the decision-making process: “Naomh Conaill CLG made four substitutions in the course of the extra time played and as a result committed a breach of Rule 2.3(ii) Rules of Specification – The Players – Official Guide 2021 Part 2.

“That the breach of the said Rule 2.3(ii) Rules of Specification – The Players – Official Guide 2021 Part 2 by Naomh Conaill CLG was an Infraction rendering Naomh Conaill CLG liable to the penalties set out in Rule 6.44(b)(ii) Official Guide 2021 Part 1, including but not limited to the award of the game to the Objector.”

On the county board’s website, Donegal GAA have stated that “there will be knock-on effects for the scheduling of the League games of the Senior Championship – the precise details of any changes are still to be formalised.

“There will be no impact on the Intermediate or Junior Championship nor is it anticipated that the knockout rounds and relegation play-offs for the Senior Championship will be affected.”

Arsenal agree to sign Tomiyasu for €20 million

Arsenal are looking to solve more of their defensive woes with the signing of Japanese defender Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna

The Gunners have agreed to sign Tomiyasu who plays in Serie A with an announcement imminent after his medical.

According to Italian reporter Fabricio Romano, personal terms have been discussed and decided on with Bologna receiving €20 million and a potential €3 million in add-ons. The medical will take place this afternoon in Italy and an official announcement will be made once the player is given the all-clear.

To push the deal through in time, the Gunners have sent a doctor to complete the medical. Arsenal have stolen this deal from under the noses of their biggest rivals Tottenham who were heavily linked with the player.

Arteta believes that Tomiyasu will fit in perfectly in defensive Arsenal’s setup, being comfortable to play at right-back and centreback.

He appears to be a great player for the future, only 22 years old and willing to play out from the back with either foot. He has made 60 appearances in the league over the last two seasons for the midtable club Bologna. In his mainstay at the side, he also scored three goals and provided three assists.

He also enjoyed his summer playing at the home for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. He plays like a defender with ten years of experience at the highest level and now he has a great chance to challenge himself in the Premier League.

The Gunners have been in need of more reassurance in their defense this year having conceded nine goals in their first three games of the league. This signing will also give Arteta a chance to offload some players that are no longer needed at the club.

Reports claim that Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles could still leave the club before the closing of the transfer window.

Tomiyasu might make his debut for the club in their next match against Norwich on Saturday 11th September in the Emirates Stadium.

Liverpool Defender Rhys Williams Set For Swansea Loan

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams is likely to complete a loan move to Swansea, according to Caoimhe O’Neill of The Athletic.

The defender, who has appeared 19 times for the first team on Merseyside, has made just one appearance this season at all levels – he played in a U23 clash against Everton in the Premier League 2.

Williams made his debut for the club in a 7-2 EFL Cup win over League One side Lincoln City and found himself in the starting lineup several times as a result of Liverpool’s injury crisis last season.

The 20-year-old came on as a late substitute against Ajax in the UEFA Champions League a month later and also played against FC Midtjylland after Fabinho had to go off injured.

Williams made six appearances in the Champions League throughout Liverpool’s run to the quarter-finals.

The youngster struggled at times while in the starting lineup but often grew into games.

Nat Phillips created an impressive partnership with him, given the circumstances, and the pair helped Liverpool to third place in the league, starting all five of their final league games of the season.

The move to Swansea is expected to allow the 20-year-old defender, who came through the academy at Liverpool, to build on his 2020-21 season and get more first-team minutes under his belt.

Former Liverpool star Rhian Brewster went on loan to Swansea City in 2019/20 when he was on the books, with his goals helping the Welsh side to the play-offs.

More recently, Harvey Elliott played 41 games for Blackburn Rovers in the EFL Championship, scoring seven and assisting 11 goals in that time.

Liverpool U23 player Sepp Van Den Berg is currently on loan at Preston North End, where he is enjoying a fruitful run of form.

With the return of Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip to the side factored in, coupled with the signing of Ibrahima Konate and the versatility of Fabinho, it seems like the best move for Williams’ career.

Liverpool Captain Henderson Signs New Deal

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has signed a new four-year deal with the club on Tuesday morning, ensuring his time at Liverpool will continue.

Henderson has spent ten years at the club after joining from Sunderland in 2011 and has become the captain and an important figure in the starting eleven over the years.

The captain put pen to paper at the AXA Training Centre and put the minds of Liverpool fans to ease.

Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com after inking the terms: “I’m obviously very honoured and proud to continue the journey I’ve already been on here.

“It’s amazing to finally get it done and just concentrate on looking forward and what the future may hold.

“I’m in a different place of course, as a player and as a person, from when I first walked in. I’ve learned and grown a lot over my time here, and I’ve got to thank a lot of people for that.

“I’ve loved every minute of it, even when I look back at the tough times, I was still enjoying being a part of this football club. The longer I can do that, the better for me really. I want to be here as long as possible, I’ve always said that.

“To continue this journey is incredible for me and my family, and I hope the fans and the club feel the same way.”

Henderson has amassed 394 appearances for the Reds since making his debut in August 2011 and has scored 30 goals.

The 31-year-old has won a League Cup, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Premier League in his time at the club.

He was the FWA Footballer of the Year, as well as the club’s Player of the Season in 2019-20 when they won their first league title in 30 years.

“Every year is the same, every year is the biggest challenge, the biggest season ahead. I feel as hungry as ever.

“I feel as hungry as I did when I first walked in 10 years ago, to prove to people that I deserve to be at this football club and give absolutely everything every single day for the badge, for the fans and for each other in this building.

“If we do that, I feel as though we’ve got a good chance of being successful.”

Hudson-Odoi inches closer to Borussia Dortmund move

German side Borussia Dortmund are looking to replace Jadon Sancho with more young English talent, step in Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi

Reports have emerged that the German club have been in talks with Hudson-Odoi over a loan move this season. According to The Athletic, Dortmund have promised the English winger regular game time and a chance to play in his preferred position.

This will not be the first time that a German club has tried to lure him away from Stamford Bridge as giants Bayern Munich came close to signing paperwork last year.

Life in the blue side of London has not been as fun for Hudson-Odoi since the arrival of manager Thomas Tuchel at the start of the year. After becoming a big part of Lampard’s side, he has not only started three competitive matches since March.

The 20-year-old has been destined for big things but now it seems that he will have to leave his boyhood club to fulfill his potential.

There have been a few suitors for the youngster with some English clubs wanting his services but Dortmund appears to be the favorite for his signature.

This deal is expected to be a loan move possibly with an option to buy after the season. The Germans have assured Hudson-Odoi that he will play in his favored left-wing position.

Over the last few months, Tuchel has attempted to shift the Englishman into a more defensive player, starting him in a right-wingback position. This suits Chelsea’s style of play as they set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation.

Hudson-Odoi soon was not able to compete with Reece James or Cesar Azpilicueta and has spent many weeks sitting on the bench.

Many fans are hoping that the 20-year-old will live up to his lofty potential, something that he may only realize under Marco Rose at Borussia Dortmund.

Southampton v West Ham United – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Southampton will face off against West Ham United at Saint Mary’s on the Gameweek 4 of the 2021/2022 Premier League season.

This game will be an interesting game for both teams. The last time these two sides met was in the last game of last season tie at the London Stadium where David Moyes’s side came out 3-0 victors. West Ham also took 4 points from 6 from Southampton in the 2020/2021 season.

Southampton Retrospective

The Saints are slowly coming into some form after a second draw Newcastle United.

Coming from behind twice to take a point, with James Ward-Prowse scoring from the penalty spot in injury time.

Notching up 2 points from 9 is relegation form but if getting a win here, it will give them confidence for the month of September.

West Ham United Retrospective

The Hammers enjoyed a surprisingly successful 2020/2021 season, finishing sixth, only missing out on Champions League football by 2 points.

This season so far, they have carried on last season’s fine form into their first two fixtures of the current season.

Beating Newcastle away from home 2-4 and on Monday night, hammering European hopefuls Leicester City 4-1 at home to go top of the Premier League with two wins from two.

In their last outing, West Ham came back from behind to salvage a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace.

In form, Michail Antonio continued to notch up his stats with a goal and an assist, contributing to 7 goals in 3 games.

Date, kick-off time and venue

This game between Southampton and West Ham United will kick off at 3 pm BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Saint Mary’s.

Where to watch West Ham United v Crystal Palace.

The game will not be televised live on any UK channel.

West Ham United v Crystal Palace team news

Winston Reid and Arthur Masuaku are major doubts for this game, with but sustaining knee injuries in recent weeks.

For Palace, Michael Olise is reportedly out until mid-September with a lower back injury.

While Eberechi Eze is suffering from lower leg problems and will be ruled out for the foreseeable future with no confirmation on his return.

Southampton v West Ham United prediction

Given the form of both teams, Southampton should lose this game sparingly. But, football is a crazy sport and sometimes the favourites don’t always win.

Southampton is in need of a win, a victory here would kick-start their season and stop the talk of relegation.

West Ham, on the other hand, will know what they have to do. Looking shaky at times against Crystal Palace, they managed to salvage a point after Conor Gallagher put Palace in front.

While I do think Southampton will cause problems, I can only see a West Ham win here.

Prediction: West Ham United 1-3

Rio Ferdinand apologises over Phil Jones Comments

Rio Ferdinand apologises over Phil Jones Comments

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has come out and apologized to Phil Jones over comments made about the Englishman, amid criticism from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Manchester United centre-back has suffered from injuries since his arrival at Old Trafford in 2011. While barely featuring the past two years due to niggling injuries.

Sir Alex Ferguson was so confident in the player back in 2011, that he admitted that Jones, could be their greatest ever player.

After Jones was given a new contract to stay on with the club, Ferdinand came out and criticised the deal, claiming he should leave to give youth team players a chance in the first team.

Rio Ferdinand apologises over Phil Jones Comments

Ferdinand told the Vibe with Five YouTube channel;

“He’s taking up a youth team player’s position in that squad right now,”

“He’s had too many injuries… I was in the same team as Phil Jones, he came from Blackburn as a young kid, everyone was saying he was going to be this great player.

“Huge potential but injuries have absolutely annihilated his career and then confidence issues at certain times as well. He’s never been able to fully establish himself in the team. Whether it’s injuries, lack of form, lack of confidence.”

“I think he should’ve gone ages ago. He should’ve gone before Chris Smalling went. Find a new club and play some football.

“I am baffled at how he’s still been given a new deal at the club given his past few years at the club. It just doesn’t make sense to me how you get a new deal.”

Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer Response

After the comments were made, Manchester United manager Solskjaer came out to defend his player, claiming his former teammate was “out of order”.

“Phil has had a horrible 18-19 months and probably a year before that as well with injuries,” said the United boss. “I think Rio was a bit, not out of order, but a bit unlucky.

“He should have called me and asked why Phil hasn’t played or why Phil hasn’t been here. Phil is a no-fuss, get on with it type of guy.

“I think that was out of order completely. I know more than anyone how it feels to be injured at that stage.”

Ferdinand Apology

The United legend was quick to apologise after his harsh comments, admitting that he was unaware of Jones’s constant injury setbacks and feels sorry for the player’s situation.

He said; “The one area where I would apologise to Phil Jones and anyone at Manchester United who has been a part of his journey.

“From speaking to people behind the scenes last week, he’s had real issues with injuries.

“To the extent that Bruno Fernandes only trained with him for the first time last week – so that tells you how long he’s been injured.

“So I didn’t know that, that’s not been communicated to the public. So from that standpoint, for someone who’s been injured, knowing what that does to you from a mental point of view, I hold my hands up and I apologise.”

Declan Bonner To Remain Donegal Senior Football Manager

Donegal GAA have announced that their county board has agreed to retain current inter-county manager Declan Bonner.

Bonner is four years into his second stint as manager of the county and will remain for at least two years longer, should he see out his contract.

The 1992 All-Ireland winner has been at the helm since September 2017 and has led his side to two Ulster Championships in that time and one unsuccessful final in 2020.

They also won Division Two of the Allianz National League in 2019 after suffering relegation in Bonner’s first season back.

However, Bonner has yet to reach the semi-final stage of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship as manager of the side.

The forgotten county fell short in the Super 8s in 2018 and 2019, losing out to Tyrone (and Dublin) in 2018 after winning the Anglo-Celt Cup.

Defeat to Cavan in the 2020 Ulster Championship final knocked the side out of the All-Ireland final after changes were made to the Championship set-up because of the pandemic.

2021 saw them wrap up their season without reaching an Ulster final – the first time they have done so under Bonner in his second stint.

Donegal fell to Tyrone in a six-point loss at the semi-final stage in the provincial competition.

A statement on the county board’s website reads: “At last Wednesday’s County Committee meeting Declan Bonner presented his report on the 2021 Allianz League Division 1 campaign and the Ulster Championship and announced that he was interested in another term as Senior Donegal County manager.

“Chairman Mick McGrath noted that as Declan’s term was over the position was also open to other candidates and invited clubs to nominate candidates by 5 pm on Sunday evening.

“As of the deadline on Sunday evening no club had nominated another candidate and this evening the County Executive recommended Declan for a second two-year term to County Committee who approved this decision.”

Paralympic Cycling: O’Reilly wins bronze in men’s Time Trial

Team Ireland had two athletes competing in the road cycling this morning on Day Seven of the 2020 Paralympics

Richael Timothy – Women’s C1-3 Time Trial

Timothy began her Paralympic day early, just after 09:00 in Tokyo. She was looking to go one step further on some of her performances earlier in the competition.

Timothy managed to break some personal best records while cycling in the Velodrome but today she took to the roads of Japan.

The athletes would start the race in stagnated runs with Timothy riding in the final three. Today would not be her day as she finished in 13th place with a time of 30:55.24.

Japanese cyclist Sugiura would take the gold medal on her home track. The silver medal would go to Sweden’s Beck while Australia’s Greco took a close third place.

Gary O’Reilly – Men’s H5 Time Trial

The men’s event began only 20 minutes after the women’s event with O’Reilly setting off as the sixth cyclist. Using the handcycles, he was in with an outside shot for a medal.

His first two laps were steady as he tried to find his rhythm on the road. As the second lap finished, he became a man on a mission as he blitzed the competition, opening out a 37-second lead for the lap.

His main source of competition was from Netherlands De Vries who rode along with him.

The 28-year-old finished his final lap in a time of 39:36.46 only a minute and a half behind the leader and good enough for him to claim a bronze medal.

The gold medal was well-earned by the Netherland’s Valize even after he fell against the fences on a tight bend. The silver medal was given to France’s Vergnaud.

This becomes Ireland’s fifth medal of the Paralympics so far and O’Reilly will be one to watch in the men’s road race tomorrow.
