Leona Maguire To Become First-Ever Irish Solheim Cup Player

Leona Maguire is set to become the first-ever Irish Solheim Cup player after European captain Caitriona Matthew selected her as a wildcard.

The Cavan native finished 13th at the British Open last weekend in the final tournament before the Solheim Cup qualification window closed.

Maguire has had a strong 2021 season that has seen her break into the top 50 in the world after two second-place finishes and six top-15 finishes in a row in LPGA tournaments.

The 26-year-old reacted to the news on Twitter: “The least Monday Monday of the year! 14year old me had a big dream and it’s been quite the journey since that ‘09 JR Solheim cup but today we made history!! So excited to represent @SolheimCupEuro.”

Maguire is a two-time Olympic golfer and recently represented Team Ireland at Tokyo 2020 alongside Stephanie Meadow.

The former number one amateur golfer in the world finished the Olympics tied-23rd with five other golfers.

Captain Matthews was full of praise for Maguire after selecting her as a wildcard.

“Leona has had a fantastic year this year,” she said. “Obviously she was world number one amateur for a couple of years and it’s maybe just taken her two or three years longer than perhaps others to settle I think as a pro.

“I think she’s got that real grittiness. I think she’s a really good match player, has a great record from the Curtis Cup and played well in the match play [event] in Vegas. I think she’ll be a solid, one of these never-give-up type players.

“It’s the first Irish player, the first Finnish player [Castren]. I think it’s great to see other players from different countries getting on the side.”

The 2021 Solheim Cup takes place at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio from Tuesday, August 31st to Monday, September 6th.

West Ham v Leicester – Preview, Lineups, Betting, TV Coverage

Leicester City travel to the London Stadium to take on West Ham in their first away game of the season on Monday night.

Brendan Rodgers’ side will be looking for their second win in as many games after a 1-0 opening weekend victory over Bruno Lage’s Wolves.

Jamie Vardy was the goalscorer at the King Power and will be available to lead the line for the Foxes again.

However, defender Jannik Vestergaard, who joined the club from Southampton 11 days ago and made his debut against Wolves, will not be available for selection after picking up an injury in training.

This leaves Caglar Soyuncu as the only recognised senior centre-back at the club that is fit for their second Premier League game.

Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana are also currently recovering from injuries they had picked up before the 2021/22 season started.

Ryan Bertrand is also unavailable as he recovers from Covid-19 but full-back Timothy Castagne is set to make his return to the side after suffering an eye socket injury at Euro 2020.

However, Luke Thomas will play in place of Bertrand on the left side of the defence.

West Ham got off to an impressive start last week with a four-goal showing at St James Park.

Michail Antonio got on the scoresheet in the side’s opening fixture and has scored in his last two Premier League starts against Leicester.

The Londoner is one goal off becoming the outright top scorer for the Hammers in the competition – he is tied with Paolo Di Canio on 47.

Wing-back Arthur Masuaku is still recovering from the knee injury he picked up last season and will not be available for West Ham’s first home match of the season.

Lineups

West Ham United: Fabianski; Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell; Rice, Soucek; Bowen, Benrahma, Fornals; Antonio.

Replacements: Yarmolenko, Lanzini, Areola, Noble, Diop, Fredericks, Johnson, Coventry, Baptiste.

Leicester City: Schmeichel; Pereira, Amartey, Soyuncu, Thomas; Tielemans, Ndidi; Perez, Maddison, Barnes; Vardy.

Lukaku hails his Arsenal performance ”dominant”

Romelu Lukaku has hailed his debut performance against Arsenal as ”dominant” after Chelsea beat Arsenal 0-2 at the Emirates on Sunday.

After his man of the match performance, opening the scoring for his new club, Lukaku was asked by Sky Sports to assess his own performance, in which he replied as ”dominant”.

Chelsea’s record signing produced a powerful performance, in which the West Londoners beat struggling Arsenal at the Emirates.

Signing for Chelsea back in 2011 from Anderlecht. Lukaku returned to the club after nearly 10 years after his first debut finishing off Reece James’s cross from close range after 15 minutes.

His brilliant hold-up play was instrumental in Arsenal’s demise, allowing many of his teammates to progress with the ball and bringing others into play.

Chelsea’s second goal came from James, with a powerful finish after Lukaku held up the play and was a major factor in both goals.

Albeit for a world-class stop from Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno, he could have had a second.

The big Belgium was a thorn in the side of Arsenal defender Pablo Mari who was thoroughly outmuscled and brushed off the ball by the striker’s sheer strength and size.

After the game, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville labelled the Belgian’s performance as the ”complete centre-forward performance”.

When asked to describe his own performance in a post-match interview after being awarded his man of the match award, Lukaku said;

“Dominant, I would say. I try to improve every time, I have a long way to go, but today was good to win and to start well.”

“Now we have to keep working, keep building and keep getting stronger because the Premier League is a very competitive league. We’re ready for the challenge and hopefully, we can improve on this”.

“You want to work hard for the team, you want to win, you want to score your chances. It’s something I’ve learnt and worked really hard on, and I keep working at it because this team is very talented. They’re the European champions but they want to keep building, I want to keep winning. We have to keep fighting, working hard and keep delivering performances like this.”

Bielsa has high hopes for Rodrigo after missing draw

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa believes that forward Rodrigo will come true on his price tag this season

The Whites made a slight return to form in last weekend’s game against Everton. The team made two comebacks during the game to draw 2-2 against the Toffees.

The team played well to overcome a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty goal and sweet Demarai Gray finish. A great first-time strike by Brazilian Raphinha sealed the draw with 20 minutes to play.

The crowd was thoroughly entertained in what was Elland Road’s first full capacity match in the Premier League in over 17 years.

A notable admission from the Leeds squad was Spanish forward Rodrigo. He missed the match will muscular strain but is likely to return for this weekend’s game.

The attacker arrived at the club last season and only managed seven goals. While in Spain he normally played striker but was repositioned into an attacking midfielder under Bielsa to facilitate Patrick Bamford.

He did not quite live up to the hype after becoming Leed’s record signing.

United’s boss Bielsa still has a lot of belief in his Spaniard’s scoring capabilities, speaking in an interview at the weekend he said:

“During the week he had a slight muscular issue, from which he recovered quickly. If that hadn’t happened he would have been our offensive midfielder in the game today.

“I have a lot of confidence in the qualities of Rodrigo. During the six weeks of pre-season, he’s the player who shone the most.”

Rodrigo has a long season ahead of himself to improve his goal tally. Leeds’ next game will be in the Carabao Cup at home to Crewe Alexandra. The match kicks off at 19:45 on Tuesday, 24th August.

Connacht U18’s Lose to Ulster in Thriller

Ulster U18’s produced a strong performance in their 34-24 close-call win over Connacht in the PwCIRFU U18 Men’s Clubs Interprovincial Championship opener at Energia Park.

After two tries from Ethan Graham and Ben Gibson gave Ulster the confidence to see out a bonus point victory over Connacht.

While Ulster did come out on top, Connacht did play well in spurts, and when they did have a purple patch, they caused problems.

However, they did trail 21-10 at the break, being outclassed by Ulster in many aspects but kept in the game with centre Hugh Gavin being a standout.

Although Connacht did make a good account of themselves for most of the match. Ulster kept their opponents at bay, stunting their progression with the ball and ultimately, confirmed their winning start to the tournament.

It was an end-to-end affair for much of the opening quarter, with both Connacht and more so Ulster notching up scores from the early minutes with real substance.

Ben Gibson was the real standout of the match, scoring an impressive 19 points, with a notable score showcasing his pace and skill, when he gained possession from a Connacht ruck to run through their defence with another converted try for a 14-0 lead.

Credit where Credit is due, Connacht did not throw in the towel early on, out-half Ryan Roache gave his side some hope after a penalty reduced the deficit.

The Westerners scored their first try minutes later, with Rory Glynn making it 14-5 at the water break.

Straight after the water break, Ulster extended the lead when Ethan Graham scored an individual try to hamper Connacht’s good work.

Prior to the end of the first half, Connacht captain Max Flynn reduced the gap to 21-10 after charging with the ball with power.

Unlike the first half, the second was a rather close affair. At one point Conor Galvin’s side closed the point gap to within four.

But Ulster powered on, making it 26-17 from a back-line play, just before Ben Gibson made it a 12-point game.

Connacht did get a bonus point in the latter minutes of the second half to give them hope but was unable to turn over the ball from Ulster who came out 34-24 winners at Energia Park.

Ulster U19s Begin Interpros With Win Over Connacht

Connacht U19 19-22 Ulster U19

Ulster U19s kicked off their 2021 Men’s Interprovincial Championship with a 22-19 win over Connacht U19s in Donnybrook, Dublin.

Jonathan Gillespie’s Ulster started off the better side but Connacht fought back before the end of the first half to set up an exciting second.

Number 8 James McNabney showed his strength as he powered over the line for the first try of the game after nine minutes.

Connacht returned fire through the wide channels as their back-line impressed throughout the match.

Connacht winger Blaine Barry got the side’s first try of the match after out-half Harry West and full-back Adam O’Carroll combined well in the build-up.

Barry’s try went unconverted but the Westerners added a second when West got his first seven points of the game after another link-up with O’Carroll.

Ballymena Academy’s Ross McKay reduced the deficit to two early on in the second half but Connacht scored a third try in response when replacement back Tadhg Finlay finished off another nice move by the Connacht backline.

West converted the try and increased his side’s lead to nine points.

Ulster and Coleraine winger Rory Telfer kept his side’s hopes alive with a second try after some strong carries.

It was the power of the Ulster pack that helped the side prevail as a maul in the last minutes led to the decisive score and a win for the Ulstermen.

Ulster U18s 34-24 Connacht U18s

The Ulster U18s got their first win of the 2021 Men’s Interprovincial Championships with a victory over Connacht’s U18 team.

The province’s U18s triumphed 34-24 at Energia Park in Dublin with two tries each from backs Ethan Graham and Ben Gibson.

Graham and Gibson combined for the first score as the latter put Monaghan full-back Graham through for the first try of the match after seven minutes.

The Bangor fly-half converted the score and added another try minutes later after the ball bounced out of a Connacht ruck.

However, Daryl Maxwell’s U18 side did not run away with it as Connacht clawed their way back into the game through Rory Glynn.

Graham followed his own grubber pick to add a sensational third try to Ulster’s tally before the half-time whistle.

Connacht continued to fight and found success through their set-pieces but Ulster never crumbled under the pressure and responded well.

Gibson added more points towards his eventual 19-point tally in the game and Dromore’s Nathan Hook touched down out wide on either side of a late Connacht score by Charlie Naughton.

Liverpool Agree Deal With Lyon For Shaqiri

Liverpool have agreed a deal in the region of £9.5 million (€11m) with French side Olympique Lyonnais for want-away playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri will leave Merseyside after making 45 appearances for the Reds and winning four trophies in the process.

He was signed from Stoke City in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £13.5m after Paul Lambert’s side were relegated from the Premier League.

His three years a the club has seen the 29-year-old add a Premier League and a second UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup to his personal trophy haul.

The Swiss international has been looking for a move this summer after a lack of playing time following a successful first season with the club.

His move will give more opportunities to academy prospects, with the rise of 18-year-old Harvey Elliott being well documented and forward Kaide Gordon also impressing in pre-season.

Lyon recently had a bid for Shaqiri rejected but it appears that they have a sweet spot with their latest bid.

Shaqiri turns 30 this year and has one year left on his contract with an option for an extra year.

The Swiss attacker will put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Ligue 1 team, who have been looking for a Memphis Depay replacement since the Dutchman’s departure earlier this summer.

Shaqiri has not been part of Liverpool’s first two matchday squads of the season while Harvey Elliott has been in both, starting their most recent fixture against Burnley.

Elliott impressed on his first Premier League start for the club with his creativity shining throughout and his movement proving tricky for the opposition to contain.

The childhood Liverpool fan was denied an assist when Mohamed Salah’s strike was ruled out by VAR as the Egyptian was in an offside position but his role in Liverpool’s second did not go unnoticed.

Shaqiri will get the playtime he desires in a break-up that works well for both parties.

Connacht Clarifies Ticket Situation

Connacht Clarifies Ticket Situation

Connacht Rugby announced yesterday evening that they are in the ”final stages” of clarifying its ticket situation on rather or not supporters can make a return, amid the Government’s decision.

Since the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic halted any sporting and social event’s all the way back in March 2020, Irish sports were no exception.

Now, after months of no fans and no new information for rugby fans on the matter.

Connacht Rugby has given an update on the current situation on the season and match ticketing options for the 2021/22 rugby season.

Connacht Clarifies Ticket Situation

An update was announced last night by Connacht Rugby clarifying its season ticket situation.

Connacht Rugby fully appreciates that many of you are waiting patiently for an update on season and match ticketing options for 2021/22.
We sincerely thank you for your understanding as we work through what is an extremely complex process for us.
We are now in the final stages of planning a number of different scenarios, which are all dependant on our permitted capacity at The Sportsground.
As soon as we receive that clarity from the Government we will update you accordingly.
In a perfect world we would have more news for you by now, but rest assured we are working around the clock on a solution.
When we receive that long-term outlook from the Government on supporters at games, we will be ready to go.
With many sporting events across Ireland now allowing half capacity for most GAA and Football games, with over 40,000 spectators being permitted into Croke Park for both the Hurling and Football finals.
The return of Rugby fans in a higher spectrum will be what fans of teams have been waiting for.
