Tyrone Minors Trounce Cork To Earn All-Ireland Final Date With Meath

The Tyrone minor footballers booked their place in the 2021 All-Ireland minor football championship final with an emphatic 0-23 to 1-06 win over Munster champions Cork on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hand dominated affairs and cruised to a 14-point victory at Bord na Móna O’Connor Park in Tullamore.

Cork were hoping to add an All-Ireland final in minor football to their impressive year in hurling but it was not to be.

Tyrone’s attack was on fire once again throughout the game with the county’s defence also being impressive – a trait commonplace in Tyrone football across the board this year.

Full-forward Eoin McElholm led the way on the scoring charts for the Ulster champions and opened the scoring in the game after captain Cormac Devlin found him in space.

Tyrone midfielder Ruairi McHugh showed his strength early on, winning a free for the side who were already two points up.

The Cork minors got on the scoreboard nine minutes into the game after Ronan Cassidy slotted home a free from range.

However, Gerard Donnelly’s side had already found their rhythm and continued to enlarge the gulf between the two sides.

His players left the pitch at half-time with a seven-point lead to their name after they held Cork to a mere three points in the half.

Cork goalkeeper Daniel Walsh kept the best attack in minor football at bay for as long as he could but his side could not close the gap.

Tyrone were constantly pressing and retaining possession after their missed chances and were an unrelenting force throughout the match.

Walsh was able to deny the Red Hand a goal but their 23 points show the quality this side has in attack.

Cork got a goal late in the game courtesy of Dylan Crowley but they were already down by twelve points at that stage so it was a mere consolaton.

Tyrone will now face Meath in the All-Ireland MFC final in next weekend’s decider after the latter beat Connacht champions Sligo by five points.

Ireland Finish Third At EuroHockey Championship II After Win Over Poland

The Ireland men’s national hockey team finished third at the 2021 EuroHockey Championship II with a 4-2 win over hosts Poland in the third-place play-off.

It was the second defeat that Jonathan Bell’s side had inflicted on the Polish after a 2-1 win in the teams’ opening match.

Teenager Kevin O’Dea’s brace was what separated the two sides in the end – O’Dea had made his Ireland debut against Poland earlier in the competition.

Ireland’s stunning first half had the host nation chasing after them from the beginning with a penalty corner in the opening minutes causing Poland trouble.

O’Dea scored towards the end of the first quarter after he controlled a pass from Peter McKibbin and slotted home.

Jonny McKee added another before the quarter came to a close who stroked home at the second time of asking.

Ireland continued their trend of missing chances while ahead after the loss to Scotland but it did not come back to haunt them like the semi-final.

Poland came to life in the third quarter and got their first goal through Wojtek Rutkowski, who fired home from their second penalty corner.

Ireland responded well and Shane O’Donoghue scored his fourth of the tournament to further the gap to two once more.

Jacek Kurowski kept his side in contention when he added a second but the Polish were unable to find an elusive third.

Ireland vanquished any lingering doubts about the result among fans with a fourth goal three minutes from time putting the final nail in the Polish coffin.

Ian Stewart’s shot was parried after a nice move from Bell’s attacking side but O’Dea was on hand to score his second of the day on the rebound and secure the bronze medal for the national side.

Ireland’s third-place finish also guarantees the side a 2023 FIH World Cup qualifier spot.

The side will battle it out with seven other European nations in Cardiff in October for a spot at the upcoming World Cup in India.

Liverpool Earn Second Win Of The Season In Front Of Home Fans

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

Liverpool dispatched Burnley in their first home fixture of the 2021/22 season to maintain a 100% record after the first two games.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were made to work for their result as Burnley looked dangerous in the final third but either could not find the finishing touch or were offside.

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas showed his quality with a Robertson-esque cross finding the head of centre-forward Diogo Jota, who headed home in front of the Kop.

Moments before, right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold and goalkeeper Alisson denied the visitors an unexpected lead with some stellar defensive work.

It was Burnley’s poor defending that allowed Jota the space to nod in the opener as centre-back Ben Mee moved away from Jota and left the goalscorer free in the middle of the box.

Liverpool were denied a second by VAR as midfielder Harvey Elliott, in his first Premier League start for the side, linked up with winger Mohamed Salah who curled the ball into the net.

Salah was deemed to be in an offside position and the goal was disallowed – this seemed to wake Burnley up.

Sean Dyche’s side pressed for an equaliser but went in at half-time without one to their name.

Striker Ashley Barnes put the ball into the home side’s net but his finish was ruled offside.

As time went on, Burnley’s pressure began to disintegrate and Liverpool gained the foothold in the match that they had searched for.

Sadio Mané secured the win for his side after Trent played the Senegalese forward in on goal.

The Liverpool full-backs were key to the side’s seventh win on the trot in the competition.

Liverpool will now look to next week’s game against Chelsea at Anfield before the first international break of the season.

The side return to action on Saturday, August 28th at 5:30 pm.

Chelsea injury update: Pulisic ruled out

Chelsea are preparing for their second game of the season against Arsenal but they have a few injury setbacks to deal with

American winger Christain Pulisic has been missing from training for the last two days. The 22-year-old scored a goal in the 3-0 over Crystal Place on Saturday but manager Thomas Tuchel has announced that he has tested positive for Covid-19.

As it stands no other players have contracted the virus and the American is expected to miss Chelsea’s next two fixtures. Fortunately, the winger is in good health and is recovering safely at home.

English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek also tested positive for the virus after the club’s Super Cup victory last Wednesday. He will likely miss the game on Sunday but will be back in contention next week.

Other injury concerns for the team have been midfielders Ngolo Kante and Hakim Ziyech. Both players played valuable roles in the Super Cup victory.

During the match, Ziyech was substituted off with a shoulder injury. He will now be returning to training in the next few days.

Understandably, he will be rested on the match on Sunday as to not worsen the knock but he may be fit for a substitute appearance.

Kante has been one of the most important players in Tuchel’s side. He received an ankle injury towards the end of the final after a rough challenge.

The French man has already returned to training and is likely to play on Sunday.

Tuchel will have a strong list of players to choose his squad from including the new signing Romelu Lukaku. If Chelsea can keep their injury list small then they may be one of the favorites for the title this season.

Trippier on cusp of Arsenal or Man Utd move

English right-back Kieran Trippier is very close to a move back to the Premier League with two clubs being told how much he will cost

Trippier has been very successful in his two-year spell on the red side of Madrid, most recently winning the La Liga last year. It got off to a bad start after being banned for a few months due to a minor betting scandal but he has turned it around.

With some impressive performances, he was able to earn the first-team place at right-back over Sime Vrsaljko and has since been a favourite of Diego Simeone.

He has also proven himself to be an important part of England’s World Cup 2018 and Euro 2020 side that reached a semi-final and final respectively. He played in five games of the Three Lions European Championship run this summer.

Trippier developed a reputation for having a dangerous right boot from the wing and set pieces.

Now it seems like a move back to the Premier League is inevitable with Arsenal and Manchester United hot on his heels. Atletico Madrid will not want to lose the 30-year-old for cheap and will not let him go for less than his release clause, according to Spanish news outlet AS.

His current release clause in Madrid is worth a steep €60 million. Rumours have circulated that the Reds made offers of €20 and €30 million but they were both swiftly rejected.

United seem eager to sign the player even though they have a very talented full back in Aaron Wan-Bissaka already at the club. Arsenal, on the flip side, are lacking true quality in this position.

Hector Bellerin is the only option that has shown his ability in this position but he seems out of favour under Arteta. The Spaniard was also linked with a move away this summer so he could be used to soften the financial burden if they make it a cash plus player deal for Trippier.

Leeds looking for next Van Dijk in Celtic

Celtic have produced some brilliant defenders in recent years and Leeds United believe they have found the next great in Leo Hjelde

The injury to centreback Diego Llorente last week has shown that Leeds can be vulnerable at the back. A poor second-half display saw them ransacked by a classy Manchester United side.

Cooper and Struijk could not deal with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba as they scored five passed with Whites’ defense. The Leeds senior and U23 sides are now looking for new talent abroad to be the future leader of the club.

They have shown great interest in Celtic’s young defender Leo Hjelde. Although he is only 17 years old, he has senior team experience in the Scottish Premiership. He appeared 12 times while on loan at Ross County last season, as well as scoring his first senior goal.

Hjelde showed his flexibility, appearing both in the center and the left side of the defense in his stay.

The teenager joined Celtic from Rosenborg FC’s youth side and he has been a part of Norway’s underage teams since U16. He is highly rated amongst the up-and-coming Norweigan youth that is destined for greatness in the next few years.

Hjelde is a physically large player, standing at 6’2”. For a young player, he has a good aerial presence and is willing to play the ball with his feet.

If the move goes through with his transfer value estimated under €1 million it will be unlikely that he jumps straight into the first team. A spot has opened up in the U23 team after Olly Casey moved to Blackpool.

He could improve as a player in the Premier League 2 before making the leap into top-flight football when he is a bit older.

There is a lot expected of young Hjelde, it will be interesting to see if he can live up to the hype.

Arsenal v Chelsea – Preview, Team News, Betting

Arsenal have a tough following to their opening match as they face Chelsea at home in week two of the Premier League

The match kicks odd at 16:30 on Sunday, 22nd August in the Emirates stadium with Paul Tierney in charge. The match will be broadcast live by Sky Sports Premier League Ireland.

This is Mikel Arteta’s chance at redemption after a humiliating defeat to Brentford last week. Although missing players, they showed no real attacking threat or tenacity in the game.

The team should be lifted by the return of Aubameyang from illness and Martin Odegaard joining the club permanently a few days ago.

Chelsea, on the other side of the coin, dominated their first game, giving Crystal Palace no shots on target after 60 minutes. Now with the signing of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, they have secured themselves as one of the favorites for the league.

The team will also nearly be at full strength with very few injuries to the squad giving Thomas Tuchel a full hand to choose from.

What might seem surprising is that Arsenal have actually won the last three fixtures between the teams. Their last loss to Chelsea was in December 2019.

Betting

Arsenal, although at home, are major underdogs with odds of 15/4 to win.

A draw has odds of 11/4.

Chelsea are heavy favorites with odds of 7/10 to win.

Score Prediction

There is no other way of looking at it, Chelsea are title contenders this season and Arsenal will battle for the top eight. With Saka and Aubameyang back in the team, expect them to be stronger but not strong enough.

Expect this game to end 2-1 with Chelsea taking all three points.

Republic of Ireland U18s draw with Hungary U18s

A late Cian Kelly-Caprani penalty earned the Republic of Ireland Under-18s a 2-2 draw in their second friendly against Hungary in Budapest.

Derby County’s Kelly-Caprani converted the spot kick in the 82nd minute after Southampton’s Luke Pearce was brought down in the box.

Pearce had scored earlier in the contest in what was his first start in green.

Head Coach Colin O’Brien made eight changes to the line-up that started Tuesday’s 2-0 win.

Owen Mason, David Toure, Tommy Fogarty, Darragh Reilly, Justin Ferizaj, Billy Brooks, Jad Hakiki-Filloche and Pearce all made their first starts as Under-18 internationals.

Republic behind early on

Hungary took the lead inside the third minute from their first attack. Zsombor Menyhárt pounced from close range when Mason was unable to hold on to an effort from Tamás Vid Tóth.

O’Brien’s side responded well and were back on level terms five minutes later. Kelly-Caprani’s blocked effort wasn’t dealt with by the Hungarian backline and the wideman was able to knock the ball through to Pearce. The frontman latched onto the pass and fired home into the far corner.

It was a frantic start to the game and in the 12th minute the Hungarians made it 2-1. Vid Tóth, who was involved in the first, was able to capitalise on a loose ball in the Irish box to find the net with a fine finish that went in off the underside of the bar.

The Boys in Green went in search of an equaliser. Fogarty went close in the 19th minute when he was allowed a free header from a corner but his effort was held well by the Hungarian goalkeeper.

Then McJannet connected well with a left-footed half volley but the captain saw his attempt go just wide of the post.

Brooks forced Simon into a save just before half time with the ‘keeper tipping his shot over the bar. The resulting corner was cleared towards Books whose goalbound volley was thwarted by the Hungary net minder again.

The second half was a tamer affair as the Republic of Ireland went in search of an equaliser. Substitute McEvoy had a glorious chance in the 80th minute when a loose ball broke to the striker just inside the penalty area. Unfortunately, his side footed-effort drew a smart save from the goalkeeper.

The visitors only had to wait two minutes to get the goal they deserved. Pearce was brought down in the Hungarian area and Kelly-Caprani stepped up to strike a sweet penalty past Simon for his second goal in two games.
