Joe McDonagh Cup: Kerry vs Carlow – Preview, TV Channel, Betting, Prediction

Carlow have a chance to secure a place in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final with a game to spare this weekend. A victory against Kerry would see them leapfrog the kingdom in the standings. The Leinster side have a game in hand against the top two teams. As a result, Kerry need a win here to keep themselves in with a chance of making the final. Currently, they are a point in arrears to Antrim who defeated them last weekend. Kerry vs Carlow takes place on Saturday afternoon.

Click here for live score commentary

Kerry conceded three first-half goals to the northerners which proved to be critical. In contrast, they failed to take goal chances of their own. For example, a Shane Conway penalty miss left Fintan O’Connor’s side with too much to do.

In fairness, Kerry started the second-half very well. But, a ten-point deficit at half-time was too much to overturn, especially when Antrim kept the scoreboard ticking. Fionan MacKessy was shown the line in injury time for Kerry but the game was effectively over by then.

A week previously, Carlow edged out Meath to put them in a very strong position. The 2018 winners had drawn their opener with Antrim, making it a decisive game. Likewise, Meath needed a win. The Ulster team were given a huge boost when Marty Kavanagh scored a goal from the penalty spot. By half-time, Carlow had a six-point lead.

However, they couldn’t put their opponents to bed in the second half. Luckily, Meath’s accuracy let them down in the third quarter and Antrim remained ahead. Despite an injury time scare, Carlow prevailed. Now, they come into this game refreshed after a week’s absence.

Last year, Carlow were relegated from the Senior Championship after finishing last in Leinster. Colm Bonnar will be eager to guide his team straight back to the top tier.

With this being Kerry’s last chance to earn a place in the final, the home draw will suit them. On the other hand, Carlow know that a win here doesn’t end their charge. But, Bonnar’s side would rather seal their fate as soon as possible.

Betting

Bookmakers have Carlow at slight 11/10 favourites. Kerry are priced at 11/10 and a draw is 8/1.

Prediction

The draw looks a great bet at 8/1

Republic of Ireland One to Watch: Jack Taylor

With plenty of new faces arriving in the Ireland camp this week to replace the ever-growing list of absentees, it may feel like the first day at a school for several of them. However, one face that might be familiar to many of the senior squad is Jack Taylor.

Back in May of 2019, Stephen Kenny’s U-21 side took on Mick McCarthy’s senior team in a behind-closed-doors friendly. Some may remember that Kenny got the better of McCarthy that day, thanks to a second half brace from Jack Taylor.

It is fair to say that the young midfielder has not drifted far from Kenny’s thoughts having made an impression on the manager during his time with the U-21 squad. As we head into final international fixture of 2020 against Bulgaria, Taylor has been called up to the senior squad for the first time.

Where did it all start?

Jack Taylor began his footballing career in London at Chelsea. He was part of their youth team for seven years, but like many young players at Chelsea, the pathway to first team football is restricted. His decision was to move to Barnet, where he signed his first professional contract.

Taylor spent just under four years at Barnet, quietly perfecting his trade whilst many outsiders began to take notice. One of them being Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex Ferguson. Peterborough got their man in January of this year, for reported fee of £500,000 rising to £1 million.

“I feel I am ready for the next step” were the words of Taylor when he linked up with his new club at the beginning of the year. And he was not wrong. Eleven appearances including two goals and two assists is not a bad return for his first season in League One.

If there were any questions surrounding Taylor’s capabilities at this level, there aren’t any now. Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony revealed in the summer that their recent signing was the subject of a bid close to £2 million after helping “transform last season”.

The Ireland U-21 midfielder hasn’t slowed down this season either, netting three goals already after ten games.

Ireland Call-Up

Only last month Taylor declared that a senior Ireland call-up is the “dream” but also remained realistic about his prospects. At 22-years-old, he believed a two year timeframe would be a more achievable goal for making the senior squad. A little over a month later, this dream has been achieved.

The sky is the limit for Jack Taylor and his career. From Non-League to League One. From Ireland U-21 to Ireland seniors. All in the space of a couple of years. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Connacht suffer home defeat to Scarlets

Guinness Pro14

Saturday 14th November – The Sportsground, Galway.

Connacht 14 Scarlets 20

A rusty Connacht side slipped to a home defeat to a Scarlets side who were down to bare bones with their International contingent away in camp.

Connacht would have been hoping to build on a superb away win in Edinburgh at the end of October. However, their two subsequent fixtures against Treviso and Dragons were both cancelled due to Covid-19 case in both opposition squads.

Scarlets had the elements at their back in the opening half in what was an archetypal Sportsground November evening. A Ryan Conbeer try got the away side off to a great start after five minutes. Man of the match Johnny McNicholl set Conbeer free out wide on the wing and the winger stepped inside to beat the last defender and dot down. The conversion attempt from Dan James was caught in the gale and pulled wide of the post.

Connacht worked their way back into the game and after a series of pick and go drives their summer signing Abraham Papali’i crashed over for his first Connacht try. Jack Carty’s conversion edged the home side ahead 7-5.

Just after the half-hour mark, Conbeer was in for his second score. Once again it was a pass from McNicholl that set up the score. Dan James was wayward with the extra once again. James did find his range with a penalty on thirty-five minutes. At the break, Scarlets held a 13-7 lead.

Connacht spurned a couple of scoring chances at the start of the second half. A superb break from Paul Boyle almost led to a try, however, an unlucky bounce saw the ball roll into touch rather than over the try line. John Porch was also tackled into touch just short of the line after a good break.

The away side stretch their lead when scrum-half Dane Blacker went over for their third try of the night. McNicholl claimed an ariel ball inside his own half and made ground before slipping the ball to Paul Asquith. The Scarlet’s centre then released Blacker on the edge on the Connacht ’22 with a pass that looked suspiciously forward.

Ultan Dillane was on the end of a Connacht drive to dive over for a try. The subsequent conversion from Carthy cut the arrears to a single score on the hour mark.

Despite some late pressure from the home side, they couldn’t find a way over to swing the game back in their favour. Their best chance came when they were held-up over the line with ten minutes remaining.

In truth, it was an error-riddled performance from Andy Friend’s side who looked flat for large portions of the game. Back to back wins for Scarlet’s see them leapfrog Connacht and lifts them into second place in Conference B.

Full-time: Connacht 14 Scarlets 20

Sexton and Henshaw out of England clash

Johnny Sexton was forced to exit the win over Wales after a half hour after picking up a hamstring injury. The Leinster fly half had a scan after the game and was subsequently ruled out of this weekend’s clash against England.

Robbie Henshaw will also miss out on Saturday, after sustaining an abductor injury in the Wales game. The return date for both players is yet to be confirmed by the IRFU. Another name of the injury list from Friday’s game is Billy Burns who suffered a head injury. Burns was taken off in accordance with HIA protocol and will follow the ‘return to play’ guidelines. Jacob Stockdale, Iain Henderson and Shane Daly are all expected to return to training this week.

Ireland play England at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday afternoon at 3pm. You can watch the match on RTE One.

Four players called up to Ireland senior squad

The call-ups come amid a selection crisis for Ireland

Aaron McEneff, Graham Burke, Jack Taylor and Troy Parrott have all been called up to the Ireland squad ahead of their fixture against Bulgaria. Parrott and Burke will be familiar with the Ireland setup, having been included in previous squads. McEneff and Taylor, however, receive their first call up to a senior Ireland squad.

Taylor and Parrott were included in the u21 squad who suffered defeat to Iceland on Tuesday where both players performed well without rewards. The inclusion of Shamrock Rovers’ pair Burke and McEneff comes off the back of a stellar season for both players in the domestic league. Three Rovers players are now involved in the senior squad as Burke and McEneff link up with Jack Byrne.

The call-ups come after another international break riddled with injuries and suspensions within the Ireland camp. No less than 13 players included in the original squad have been ruled out for various reasons.

Matt Doherty and James McClean were the latest to be ruled out due to testing positive for Covid-19. An injury to Adam Idah which was confirmed today also rules the young striker out.

Ireland take on Bulgaria on Wednesday in a crucial relegation deciding match. An Ireland loss would mean relegation to League C in the Nations League. Stephen Kenny needs a win in what has been a stressful start as Ireland manager.

Ireland squad against Bulgaria:

Goalkeepers: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Caoimhín Kelleher (Liverpool), Mark Travers (AFC Bournemouth)

Defenders: Kevin Long (Burnley), Shane Duffy (Celtic, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion), Dara O’Shea (West Bromwich Albion), Cyrus Christie (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Fulham), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Darragh Lenihan (Blackburn Rovers), Ryan Manning (Swansea City).

Midfielders: Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Robbie Brady (Burnley), Jack Byrne (Shamrock Rovers), Jason Knight (Derby County), Josh Cullen (Anderlecht), Aaron McEneff (Shamrock Rovers), Jack Taylor (Peterborough United).

Attackers: Graham Burke (Shamrock Rovers, on loan from Preston North End), James Collins (Luton Town), Ronan Curtis (Portsmouth), Callum O’Dowda (Bristol City), Daryl Horgan (Wycombe Wanderers), Sean Maguire (Preston North End), Troy Parrott (Millwall, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur).

Matt Doherty and James McClean test positive for Covid-19

The pair will now miss Ireland’s upcoming game against Bulgaria.

The FAI have confirmed that Matt Doherty and James McClean have tested positive for Covid-19. This comes just one day after they started against Wales. “The rest and the staff and squad tested negative ahead of the flight back to Dublin this morning”, the FAI announced earlier today.

The exclusion of Doherty and McClean only adds to the growing list of Ireland absentees. There’s now an unprecedented number of players unavailable for Wednesday’s fixture and relegation decider against Bulgaria.

Jeff Hendrick and Jayson Molumby are suspended for the match as a result of their bookings on Tuesday. Alan Browne and Callum Robinson previously tested positive for Covid-19, meaning they’ll miss out. Injuries have also ruled a handful of players out including; Enda Stevens, Aaron Connolly, Séamus Coleman, John Egan, Adam Idah and Harry Arter. James McCarthy also withdrew from the squad due to personal issues.

Stephen Kenny will now have to work with an even more depleted squad as he looks to gather his first win as Ireland boss.

Ireland squad against Bulgaria:

Goalkeepers: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Caoimhín Kelleher (Liverpool), Mark Travers (AFC Bournemouth)

Defenders: Kevin Long (Burnley), Shane Duffy (Celtic, on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion), Dara O’Shea (West Bromwich Albion), Cyrus Christie (Nottingham Forest, on loan from Fulham), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Darragh Lenihan (Blackburn Rovers), Ryan Manning (Swansea City).

Midfielders: Conor Hourihane (Aston Villa), Robbie Brady (Burnley), Jack Byrne (Shamrock Rovers), Jason Knight (Derby County), Josh Cullen (Anderlecht), Aaron McEneff (Shamrock Rovers), Jack Taylor (Peterborough United).

Argentina defeat the All Blacks for the first time

Argentina defeated the All Blacks for the first time in their history, with a 25-15 win at Bankwest Stadium, Sydney, on Saturday.

The loss for New Zealand is the first back-to-back loss for the All Blacks in almost a decade after falling to Australia in Brisbane the previous weekend.

The win for Argentina keeps their Tri Nations hopes alive with a clash against Australia awaiting them in Newcastle next week.

Mario Ledesma on the historic victory

Argentina coach Mario Ledesma said: “It’s surreal what happened, not just the result but playing, getting on the field after everything that has happened this year.”

The Argentinian continued:

“Some of the boys haven’t seen their families for four months but they have all been positive … they have been awesome. I think we will remember this for a long time, not only the game but because of the special situation. I’ve received a lot of messages. For us, and for everyone, I think it’s the only team we haven’t beaten. I guess someone will write a book about it.”

All Blacks “bitterly disappointed”

New Zealand coach Ian Foster said: “Obviously from an All Black view we are bitterly disappointed with the result, with the way we played.

“But what I think we saw was a team that despite the disadvantage of not playing a lot of rugby … they have come here with massive energy and a desire to prove something to their country which has gone through a heck of a hard time.

“I want to congratulate them on the result, it is a bit of an historic day for them.”

Argentina opened the scoring in the fifth minute, before a penalty from Richie Mo’unga levelled the scores soon after.

Argentina soon dominated territory and possession. Sanchez scored the opening try of the match, collecting his own kick for a 13-3 lead.

The All Blacks struggled with poor discipline as Sanchez extended the lead to 16-3 before the break.

They were 19-3 in front soon after the interval when Sanchez slotted over another three points.

New Zealand got a try back in the second half after captain Sam Cane crashed over in the corner from some strong forward play.

Argentina’s defence continued to repel wave after wave of New Zealand attack. Eventually, a frustrated New Zealand gave away another penalty allowing Sanchez kick successfully from 50 metres out for an unassailable lead.

A consolation try to Caleb Clarke brought the scoreline closer but emotional scenes erupted after the final whistle. Argentina’s 30-year wait for a win over the All Blacks was over.

Flyhalf Nicholas Sanchez was named man of the match, having scored all his sides points.

Argentina next play the Wallabies at McDonald Jones Stadium with the Tri Nations up for grabs for both teams.

Result and scorers

Argentina 25 (Sanchez try; Sanchez con; Sanchez pen 6)

New Zealand 15 (Cane, Clarke tries; Mo’unga con; Mo’unga pen)
