Dublin vs Meath: Leinster Final Preview, TV Channel, Betting, Prediction

Dublin returned to GAA HQ last weekend and their knowledge of the vast pitch was evident. They ruthlessly put Laois to the sword to continue their quest for a tenth Leinster Championship on the run. Meanwhile, Kildare vs Meath was a far more tightly contested semi-final. But, by the end Meath were comfortable winners after being six-points down at the beginning of the second-half.

A few weeks ago, Dublin vs Meath saw the reigning champions claim a four-point win in the league. On that occasion, Dublin came out on top of a high-scoring encounter. However, Meath showed that they have the tools to hurt Dessie Farrell’s team. Direct runs from deep proved hard for Dublin to deal with and resulted in plenty of frees within scoring distance.

Last weekend, the same direct running style saved the Royals when they looked down against Kildare. Meath managed just four points in the first-half as opposed to Kildare’s eleven. As the sides took the field for the second part of the contest, things were looking desolate for Meath. But, they soon showed the hunger and drive that saw them compete with some of the best in Division 1 of the League.

Jordan Morris and Matthew Costello both found the net just minutes after the restart. The two goals were excellent examples of how hard running and moving the ball quickly can open up defences. That brought the deficit back to a point. Then, when Cillian O’Sullivan scored Meath’s third goal in the 45th minute after a turnover high up the pitch, Meath never looked back. Joey Wallace and Jason Scully added two more majors before full time. This came just a week after they netted seven against Wicklow.

On the other hand, it was just the two goals for Dublin as they swatted aside the challenge of Laois. The Dubs don’t need goals in the same way other teams do though as their 23 points would have likely been enough to win a game in itself.

In truth, Dublin were slow to get going as uncharacteristic errors peppered the first quarter. For example, Paddy Small hit a hat-trick of wides, James McCarthy was dispossessed twice, and Cluxton sent a kick-out over the sideline. Then, they found their rhythm and Sean Bugler’s 24th minute goal justified his continued selection at wing-forward.

Likewise, CiarĂĄn Kilkenny continues to perform at the top of his game. A personal 1-4 tally looked effortless. Brian Fenton looked as dangerous as ever. He scored four points that could have easily included a goal. Furthermore, Cormac Costello stole the headlines despite only playing 25 minutes. Seven points from him is surely enough for Dessie Farrell to finally consider putting Costello in from the start. However, Costello could be his own worst enemy by proving himself as an impact sub over and over again.

Meath may have the tools to threaten Dublin but there’s little doubt they will need to continue their goal-scoring run to do so. 12 goals in 2 games is a promising trend to carry into such an encounter, but they need to be equally as tigerish in defence. Farrell won’t underestimate Andy McEntee’s team and his instructions will be for his players to come out firing. The first 20 minutes of this game will be played at breakneck speed. The other fifty will give us a demonstration of the gap between Dublin and the chasing Leinster pack.

The Royal County last won Leinster in 2010 after that controversial final against Louth. Since then, they have lost to Dublin in four finals.

Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers victorious in FAI Cup quarter finals

Bohemians and Finn Harps suffered defeat.

Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers advance to the FAI Cup semi-finals after their victories over Bohemians and Finn Harps tonight. 3 of the 4 FAI Cup have now been decided after Athlone Town defeated Shelbourne at the end of October. The final spot will be decided next Wednesday as Sligo take on Derry.

Shamrock Rovers vs. Finn Harps

Shamrock Rovers travelled to Ballybofey in the evening kick-off as they took on Finn Harps. The pitch wasn’t in the best shape, not helped by the conditions. This could have impacted Rovers’ possession-based playstyle, but they came away with a win in the end.

It wasn’t easy for Rovers, however, as they had to mount a comeback from 2-0 down. Barry McNamee opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a neat finish inside the box. Stephen Folan increased Harps’ advantage just a few minutes later with an accurate header from a corner.

Finn Harps went into half time with a comfortable 2-0 lead, but that wouldn’t last for long. Shamrock Rovers were awarded a penalty in the 49th minute which was initially saved. Unfortunately for Harps, though, the referee ordered a retake of the penalty. Aaron McEneff made no mistake the second time around as he tucked past the keeper.

Incredibly, Rovers were awarded another penalty in the 53rd minute as Graham Burke went down in the box. Aaron McEneff equalized from the spot with his 2nd penalty goal of the night.

Rovers completed their comeback in the 70th minute as Graham Burke slotted home from a rebound. Today’s goal was Burke’s 10th of the season since joining Rovers on loan from Preston North End.

The match finished 3-2 after an incredible comeback from Rovers.

Dundalk vs. Bohemians

Bohemians took on Dundalk from Dalymount Park in the 2nd cup game of the day. Dundalk played Bohemians twice this season prior to this fixture but failed to pick up a win. That changed tonight as the Louth club ran out 4-1 winners.

It didn’t take Dundalk too long to open the scoring as Michael Duffy netted in just the 2nd minute after being played through. Bohemians got their equalizer in the form of a penalty kick not long after as Andre Wright dispatched from the spot.

After an end to end few minutes, Dundalk got a penalty of their own in the 35th minute. Michael Duffy was brought down in the box after some excellent footwork. Bohemians keeper got a hand to the resulting David McMilan penalty, but it wasn’t enough to keep it out of the net.

Dundalk got their 3rd goal in the 38th minute under controversial circumstances. Cameron Dummigan provided the assist for McMilan’s 2nd, but the ball looked to have gone out of play before Dummigan got his cross into the box. Unfortunately for Bohs, VAR wasn’t there to help their cause and it was always an uphill battle from then on.

Michael Barker received his second yellow card of the night in the 76th minute which effectively ended Bohs’ chance of getting a result. Dundalk begun to control possession thereafter.

Substitute Nathan Oduwa completed the rout in the 87th minute as he tapped home from close range.

The match ended 4-1 to Dundalk. The scoreline was perhaps harsh on Bohemians as they were competitive throughout the game.

Dundalk will now face Athlone town in the semi-final. Shamrock Rovers will play the winner of Derry City vs. Sligo Rovers.

Galway vs Tipperary Hurling Quarter Final: Preview, TV Channel, Betting, Prediction

Last weekend proved to be an unsuccessful one all around for Galway teams. The footballers lost to Mayo to end their Championship and the hurlers lost to Kilkenny in the Leinster final. However, unlike the footballers, the hurlers have a chance to redeem themselves. They come up against the holders Tipperary on Saturday afternoon for a place in the semi-final.

Before last weekend, Galway were many people’s top pick to go on and win the Championship. But, a cracking Leinster final saw Brian Cody’s Kilkenny turn the tide on that opinion.

The Connacht side started quicker and their stars were soon in full stride. Kilkenny were always in touch though because of sloppy fouling in the Galway defence. The score of the first half was arguably in the 22nd minute. Joe Canning lined up a sideline ball and when many probably expected him to shoot, he instead decided to pick out the run of Joseph Cooney. Cooney never even had to break stride to collect the sliotar and was left with an easy flick over the bar from the 45. Yet, Galway still only took a one-point lead into the break.

By the 55th minute, Galway looked ready to put Kilkenny to bed. They had a five-point lead and were on top of the Cats all over. Then, impact sub Richie Hogan produced one of the most delicious goals you’ll ever see on a hurling field. A deft touch killed the long ball, a silky flick put it around the keeper, and in the blink of an eye he was flicking it over his shoulder and into the empty Galway net without ever touching it with his hand.

Galway looked baffled and Kilkenny knew it. In the very next play, the same man delivered an assist for TJ Reid. Reid rattled the Galway net for another sucker punch that flipped the game in Kilkenny’s favour.

Despite Galway taking the lead again, Kilkenny were given a new lease of life from Hogan’s majors. As a result, they had more to give going down the stretch and took a two-point win straight into the semi-final.

The loss is a big one for Galway who find themselves with an uphill battle to win the Championship despite not playing badly. After a disappointing year last year, the pressure is on for the 2017 Champions to fulfill their potential.

Tipperary didn’t look their efficient best against Limerick but a win over Cork leaves them on an upward curve.

What’s even more rewarding is that they had to earn the victory. The rebels provided a stern test and the holders had to shake the hangover from their defeat to Limerick quickly. 12 first-half wides was cause for concern for Tipperary fans.

Still, there was always the sense that a goal could see Tipperary out the gate in this game and thankfully for them, it came. Jason Forde provided after a Jake Morris assist. Next, it was Morris’ turn and he got a late goal of his own to down the Cork challenge.

Other teams in the Championship will be rejoicing at this fixture as they are guaranteed to lose a big contender here.

Paddy Power put Tipperary at slight 10/11 favourites. Galway are 11/10 and a draw is 9/1.

Prediction: Tipperary. This game is as much a mental one for Galway as it will be physical after that loss to Kilkenny. In addition to that, Tipperary have proved themselves capable of a back-door win already. Extra-time is highly likely too.

FAI launch investigation following claims made against Stephen Kenny

Irish players were reportedly shown a controversial video before they faced England.

The Football Association of Ireland have launched an investigation amid reports that a politically charged video was shared with the Irish squad before their meeting with England. The video in question was reportedly ‘anti-British/English’ in nature, according to some sources. Others have claimed that the video was ‘pro-Irish’.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, several members of the squad were shocked by the content of the video. It was meant as a motivational tool to prepare Ireland before their fixture with England, however it appeared to have an adverse affect on some. The video in question has not been revealed to the public yet.

“The Football Association of Ireland is aware of issues surrounding content shared with our Republic of Ireland senior men’s team ahead of the recent international friendly against England at Wembley Stadium. The FAI is already looking into this matter internally as a matter of urgency to establish the facts. The FAI has no further comment to make at this time.”, the FAI explained in a statement made earlier.

Rumours of an informant within the Irish camp have circulated since reports of the story broke. A member of the Ireland backroom staff has been mentioned extensively, however nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Regardless of who leaked the story, it is sure to put even more pressure on Stephen Kenny’s shoulders. The current Ireland manager is still looking for his first win in charge after seven games with just one goal scored in that time. This recent controversy will only prompt further questions about the stability of the Ireland manager’s job.

Time will tell what becomes of Stephen Kenny’s current position. That said, he could have done without this developing situation, especially amid growing concerns from certain sections of the Irish support.

Marcus Harness: Who is Ireland’s latest recruit?

The Portsmouth man watched as Ireland drew with Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Many Ireland fans may not be familiar with the name Marcus Harness. That could change in the coming months as the 24-year-old looks set to establish himself as a valuable member of the Irish camp.

Despite not making the matchday squad, Harness watched from the sidelines as his compatriots played out a scoreless draw against Bulgaria on Wednesday. Circumstances prior to the match prevented him from making the squad, but there’s a possibility that he may be involved in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

He declared his intention to play for the Republic in July of 2019, but this international break marked his first involvement in the squad, likely due to paperwork. His declaration came shortly after joining Portsmouth.

He joined Portsmouth from Burton Albion, the club where he honed his craft as he came through their youth academy before transitioning into the first team. It wasn’t a straightforward passage through by any means, though. After initially breaking into the first team in 2014, he gradually faded out of the manager’s plans which led to a succession of loans in various divisions.

It was the 2017-18 season when Harness truly established himself as a first team regular while on loan at League Two side Port Vale. He played in 35 league games as Port Vale narrowly avoided the drop by finishing 20th.

He clearly impressed the Burton Albion manager – at the time – Nigel Clough as he became a valuable squad member for his parent club during the 2018-19 season. That season he made 32 league appearances and added goals to his game as he scored 5 times.

On July 18th, 2019, Harness linked up with fellow Irish international Ronan Curtis as he swapped the yellow of Burton for the blue of Portsmouth. He made an impact during his first season as he made 27 league appearances and chipped in with 11 goal contributions.

While he impressed during the 2019-20 campaign, he has really stepped up a level this season. The winger has put in some scintillating displays for Pompey as they sit 6th in the League One table. So far, he has scored 5 and assisted 4 in just 11 league appearances.

With Ireland seriously lacking attacking options at the minute, his inclusion in the senior set up is a welcome one. The versatility of Harness is also an added bonus as he can play on either wing or as a number 10.

Stephen Kenny may be left with no choice but to include Harness in his forthcoming World Cup qualifying squad, especially if he maintains his spectacular form. Ireland fans will be hoping he can contribute as Stephen Kenny tries to gather that elusive first international win.

Player ratings as Ireland draw with Bulgaria

Here’s how we rated the Irish players in their outing tonight.

DARREN RANDOLPH – 6

Randolph marked the 50th appearance of his Ireland career tonight with a clean sheet. That could have been a very different story. He very nearly gave the ball away to Bulgarian striker Kraev as he slipped up while trying to play out from the back. Thankfully, though, he had the composure to get the ball away to safety.

DARA O’SHEA – 7

Dara O’Shea started at right back tonight having previously played left back and centre back for Ireland in his short international career so far. He looked comfortable going forward and at the back aside from one occasion when he played a Bulgarian player on which nearly led to a chance.

SHANE DUFFY – 6

Stuck to his task well as he denied Bulgaria a goal. Done just enough to stop Bulgaria scoring from a corner as his pressure put off his opposite number. He did, however, make one pass which was intercepted and could have easily led to a Bulgaria goal.

KEVIN LONG – 6

Looked comfortable at the back without being too noticeable. Received an early yellow but that didn’t affect his performance. The Burnley man was dominant in his 50/50s.

RYAN MANNING – 5

Manning made his long-awaited international debut tonight at left back. The 24-year-old looked fairly comfortable defensively on the night. He would have liked to have had more influence going forward, though. Subbed off for Cyrus Christie in the 85th minute.

JASON KNIGHT – 6

It was a first international start for Jason Knight, having previously came on as a sub against Finland and Wales. The Derby midfielder was typically combative in midfield. He created Ireland’s best chance of the game as his driving run in midfield set up Ronan Curtis who shot over the bar. He did give the ball away on one occasion which could have been dangerous, but he got back quick enough to help out defensively.

CONOR HOURIHANE – 5

Put one good ball into the box towards the end of the match which just evaded the onrushing Jason Knight. Otherwise, didn’t have much influence on the game.

ROBBIE BRADY – 6

Normally very composed and reliable on the ball, Brady was sloppy in possession at times tonight. He looked to play progressive passes, but it didn’t come off for him like it has done in the past. He did come very close to opening the scoring, though. He struck from range after making space for himself only to be denied by the post. Replaced by Jack Byrne due to injury in the 77th minute.

DARYL HORGAN – 6

Daryl Horgan made his 3rd consecutive start for Ireland tonight. Made a few good runs down the right as he looked to beat Cicinho on a handful of occasions. Put one good cross onto the head of James Collins who struck over the bar. Subbed off for Josh Cullen in the 67th minute.

RONAN CURTIS – 6

Missed Ireland’s best chance of the match as he was played into space by Jason Knight. Otherwise, though, displayed high energy in the final third at times which nearly resulted in a goal as his cross was nearly deflected into the path of James Collins. Subbed off for Troy Parrott in the 85th minute.

JAMES COLLINS – 6

Earned a handful of fouls and got into good positions but the Luton striker wasn’t rewarded with a goal. He came closest when he connected with a Dara O’Shea cross, but his effort went just wide of the post. Subbed off for Sean Maguire in the 85th minute.

SUBSTITUTIONS

JOSH CULLEN – 6

Recycled and carried the ball well when he came on.

JACK BYRNE – N/A

Showed good intensity after coming on and showed for the ball but failed to create any chances. Played one good ball into the box after nice link up play with Jason Knight but Sean Maguire failed to hit the net.

Showed some nice touches after coming on and was slipped in towards goal but unfortunately, he was offside.

Ireland u21s victorious against Luxembourg but fail to qualify for European Championships

Despite an impressive campaign, Ireland will not appear at the 2021 u21 European Championships.

Ireland u21s played Luxembourg u21s this evening in the final game of a long European Championship qualifying campaign. After a disappointing result against Iceland on Sunday, Ireland bounced back by defeating the Luxembourgers 2-1.

Goals from Joshua Kayode and Jamie Lennon propelled Jim Crawford’s side to a much-needed victory. The scoreline reflected how the game played out as Ireland dominated for large periods.

It took until the 35th minute for the opening goal of the match. Joshua Kayode was the goalscorer in what was his first u21 start, after impressing as a substitute against Iceland. Darragh Leahy whipped an accurate cross onto the head of the Carlisle loanee who finished with aplomb into the right-hand corner.

Jamie Lennon scored the winning goal in the 65th minute. Danny Mandroiu swung in a dangerous free kick from wide and after a scuffle in the box the St Pat’s man found the back of the net.

Luxembourg struck back in the 84th minute, but it would only prove to be a consolation as the scoreline finished 2-1.

Despite this evenings victory, Ireland will not be appearing at the 2021 u21 European Championships. Sunday’s loss against Iceland proved decisive for their qualification chances. It would have been the first time in Ireland’s history to qualify for the tournament.

The squad can, however, hold their heads high after a competitive and impressive campaign. The crowds seen pre-coronavirus demonstrated the reignited interest in Irish youth football after a disappointing few years.

Waterford vs Clare Hurling Quarter-Final: Preview, TV Channel, Betting, Prediction

Since their defeat to Limerick in the Championship opener, Clare have gone from strength to strength. A tight contest with Laois was followed up by a win over Wexford last weekend. On the other hand, Waterford found themselves in a Munster Final last Sunday but fell short of toppling Limerick. That leaves them with one game less under their belt than Clare ahead of this weekend’s quarter-final.

Firstly, Waterford’s win over Cork was a fantastic one for the county. However, Limerick proved to be too much of a challenge in the Munster Final. In what can be described as the most combative game in the Championship thus far, Waterford were ferocious in their attempt to dethrone Limerick as kings of Munster.

The middle third was the decisive battleground for much of this tie. Waterford opted to go toe-to-toe with Limerick’s physicality. In fact, they achieved that for much of the game and even came out on top on many occasions. At half-time, it was 0-14 to 0-11 to the holders and there was a sense that they would push on in the second-half. But, the opposite unfolded. With 20 minutes left, Waterford had a one-point lead. That’s when Limerick’s squad strength proved to be crucial. They just had more to offer than Waterford in the closing stages and took a four-point win.

In spite of this, Waterford will be encouraged by their performance. Limerick are the strongest team in the country on form and they gave them a massive run. Liam Cahill will be itching for another go at John Kiely’s team.

Meanwhile, Clare emerged from the qualifiers with an impressive win against Wexford. 2013 Player of the Year Tony Kelly again lorded things on his way to a personal 1-15 tally. 10 of those came in the first-half as the Banner men stormed to a 0-13 to 0-3 lead.

The second-half didn’t prove to be as bountiful for them. But, Wexford never came close to threatening the early lead Clare established. When Kelly scored a smashing goal in the 52nd minute, it effectively ended the tie as a contest and Brian Lohan has successfully steered his team to the quarter-finals.

Clare have to prevail in a much tougher contest this weekend if they are to reach the semi-finals.

Prediction: Waterford. My heart says Clare but my head says Waterford. The Munster runners-up were impressive against Limerick and from numbers 1-15 they may just pack more of a punch.

Irish Rugby team to play England – Kick Off 3pm Saturday

Andy Farrell has named the Ireland team to play England in the Autumn International Series on Saturday, Kick Off 3pm for the top of the table clash 

James Ryan will lead an Ireland team that shows four changes to the side that took the field against Wales.

Ryan is again partnered in the 2nd row by last week’s try scorer Quinn Roux. They will pack down behind the unchanged front row of Cian Healy, Ronan Kelleher and Andrew Porter.

CJ Stander returns to the starting XV at blindside with Peter O’Mahony moving to 7 and Caelan Doris packing down at 8.

Jamison Gibson Park retains the scrum-half jersey and will partner Ross Byrne who replaces the injured Sexton.

In the centre Bundee Aki comes in for the injured Robbie Henshaw with Chris Farrell lining out at 13.

Hugo Keenan continues at fullback with James Lowe and Keith Earls on the wings.

The forward replacements are Rob Herring, Ed Byrne, Finlay Bealham, Iain Henderson and Will Connors while Conor Murray, Billy Burns and Jacob Stockdale provide cover for the backs.

The match is live on RTÉ, Channel 4 and Amazon Prime (UK Only).
