100 International Goals for Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo or Messi? The age-old debate that every football fan has found themselves entwined in at one stage or another.

Whilst Lionel Messi has been grabbing the headlines for the wrong reasons as of late, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first ever European footballer to hit the 100 International goals mark as his side Portugal overcame Sweden in a convincing 2-0 victory.

It was never going to be a tap-in either for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as he curled a superb free kick into the top corner. In the second half he bagged his second to bring his total to 101 goals. Just over 16 years ago, Ronaldo netted his first goal for his country at the EURO 2004 competition where they would go on to lose the final to Greece in of the tournament’s biggest ever upsets.

However, Ronaldo would lead his team to victory in the same competition 12 years later as Portugal clinched the EURO 2016 trophy.

PELE COMMENTS

Brazilian icon and the country’s top scorer, Pele, was quick to congratulate Cristiano Ronaldo on twitter on this momentous occasion.

Pele made it known recently that he stands on the Ronaldo side of the fence in the aforementioned Messi-Ronaldo debate, stating that Ronaldo is the most consistent with his performances.

Not only is Ronaldo consistent, but he is also determined to be the greatest. When interviewed after the win over Sweden, there was only one thing on his mind. Iranian Ali Daei and his world record number of International goals which stands at 109. A mere nine goals away from beating that record, there is no stopping Ronaldo now.

American Football – 2020 NFL Season Divisional Preview

American Football – 2020 NFL Season Divisional Preview – The 2020 NFL Season kicks off this week with 32 teams battling it out to get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February’s SuperBowl in Tampa Bay’s Raymond James Stadium.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the crazy off-season, never fear. I’m here to give you my take and predictions on the Divisional battles in both the AFC and NFC.

AFC:

NORTH:

The Baltimore Ravens are the heavy favourites to stay top of the AFC North and with good reason. Lamar Jackson’s game breaking ability is off the charts and he’s surrounded by a very competent supporting cast.

While the Ravens are favourites, they won’t have it all their own way. The Cleveland Browns have one of the most talented rosters in the entire league. Rookie Head Coach Kevin Stefanski has been given the task of getting all that talent on the same page which, given some of the personalities in that locker room, is far from a formality. But if they get it right, they can be a match for anyone.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are also looking to be a factor. Big Ben returns from injury and their success hinges on his ability to stay on the field. He should have enough weapons at his disposal on offense and they had one of the more dynamic defences in the league last year.
The Cincinnati Bengals will most likely be focusing on developing young talent than making a run at the division title here.

Traditionally one of the most physical and intense divisions in the league, the smart money will be on the Ravens to claim the top spot again, but I believe Cleveland are in with a great shout to pull off a shock.

SOUTH:

The AFC North may have a clear favourite, but the battle in the South doesn’t. Even the most optimistic of Jaguars fans will give them any shot of being in contention and the rumours of “Tanking” are already surfacing, but there is a 3 way shootout predicted otherwise.
The Titans, Colts, and Texans all carry a lot of talent but also bring some question marks.
Houston did get Deshaun Watson tied down to a new contract, but I have major concerns about how much an effect the trading away of DeAndre Hopkins will have. They may have to hit the ground running or Bill O’Brien could be in danger of losing that locker room.
Tennessee made a lot of waves on their way to the AFC Championship game in 2019 but they won’t be coming out of seemingly anywhere this season. Teams will be ready for them. Can Ryan Tannehill replicate the excellent play we saw from him after he replaced Marcus Mariota? His success may be inextricably linked to Derrick Henry establishing that fearsome run game.
Indianapolis are armed with a new quarterback as they continue life after Andrew Luck. Philip Rivers has had a fantastic career but at 38 years old, how empty is the tank?  Can rookie Michael Pittman or Parris Campbell offer TY Hilton the reliable running buddy he has long been needing?

My gut feeling is telling me Houston take a big step back. Bringing in Brandin Cooks and Randall Cobb strike me as panic moves to be honest. That leaves Tennessee and Indy to fight it out. I think that goes right down to the wire; I give a slight edge to the Titans.

EAST:

The landscape of the AFC East has changed. For the bones of 2 decades no preseason prediction was done without the New England Patriot as shoe-ins for division winners. Now they’re just one of the pack. Cam Newton has been earning rave reviews in training camp but has a big job on his hands to help revive a dormant offense. And now the probably don’t have a top tier defense to pick up the slack after free agency and Covid opt outs.
That opens the door for the Buffalo Bills to make a run at winning the division for the first time since 1995. The Bills offense will only go as far as Josh Allen will take them, but they went out an got a legit go-to receiver in Stephon Diggs to help him.
Miami are also looking to get themselves in the hunt after a busy off season. After Ryan Fitzmagic finished last season as the leading rusher in 2019, it was no surprise to see 2 veteran Running Backs acquired along with a bevy of defensive reinforcements. But the big name on everyone’s lips among Dolphins fans is new Quarterback Tua. His injury issues will mean we will likely to see little, if any, of him this season so Fitz is still the man for now.
The last team involved here are the New York Jets who have had another rocky summer. They should struggle to make an impact as Adam Gase continues to sabotage his own cause.

I see the Bills as the front runners for this division, and if it clicks with Josh Allen this year, they could be legit contenders for a deep playoff run. It may be a season too early to expect the Dolphins to mount a serious challenge leaving the Pats to take the runner up spot with the Jets just struggling to keep pace.

WEST:

No shock as to who the heavy favourites are for the AFC West. While Patrick Mahomes can trot out and throw a ball, that division could be as much of a formality as the East was during the Brady era, and that’s not a knock on the other 3 teams. Mahomes himself is good enough but when he has the weapons around him that he has, it’s ridiculous.
The race for second could be very interesting, however. The Las Vegas Raiders have retooled at wide receiver adding Bryan Edwards and Alabama home run hitter Henry Ruggs. If last year’s stand out Josh Jacobs can carry his good for over into year 2, this is a dangerous offense.
If the Raiders are a dangerous offense, the Los Angeles Chargers can be considered a dangerous defense. Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram provide a terrifying pass rush combination and Linval Joseph arrives from Minnesota to sure up the middle. Derwin James being ruled out for the season is a big blow, however.
Speaking of terrifying pass rush duos, the Denver Broncos have one of their own in Von Miller and the fit again Bradley Chubb. And the offense looks loaded too after adding savvy route runner Jerry Jeudy and the lightning quick KJ Hamler to compliment Courtland Sutton and Noah Fant. If John Elway has finally found his Quarterback in Drew Lock, the Broncos are an emerging powerhouse.

Barring a Mahomes injury, I can’t see past the Chiefs winning out here. I’m all aboard the Broncos hype train and believe they have the potential to make some noise. The Chargers and Raiders will be competitive, but I think they come up short.

NFC:

NORTH:

The NFC North will be very competitive again in 2020. The Packers decision to draft a quarterback instead of arming the one they have with more weapons left everyone stunned. But I don’t see anything to suggest they will take a significant step back this year.
The Minnesota Vikings did add some excellent talent to their ranks but most of them will only serve to replace the players they lost and it remains to be seen if they’ve done enough to overtake the Packers at the top of the division.
The Detroit Lions will welcome back a fit-again Matthew Stafford and they will need him to be at the top of his game to stay relevant.
And the Chicago Bears will need to find some inspiration on offense if they are to be a factor. Matt Nagy will be feeling the heat this year.

I think it’s as you were in this division, with the Packers maintaining the edge over the Vikings at the top. The Lions and Bears will make life tough.

SOUTH:

Down South, the New Orleans Saints have usually had it their own way in recent years. Drew Brees is back for another run at a SuperBowl and they will surely be in the mix.
But the big talking point is what is going on in Tampa Bay. After winning the Tom Brady pools, the Buccs wasted no time in surrounding him with a huge array of talent. If Brady has anything left in the tank the Buccaneers should be ready to go toe to toe with New Orleans.
The Atlanta Falcons flattered to deceive again in 2019 and pressure may be mounting on Head Coach Dan Quinn. Can they show any signs of being the team that went to the SuperBowl4 seasons ago?
Carolina starts a new era after moving on from Ron Rivera and Matt Rhule has a big job on his hands to get them back into contention. In all honesty, this looks like a rebuilding year for the Panthers.

The big question here is just how good can we expect the Buccaneers to be? We know the Saints are legit and that the Falcons and Carolina are probably going to be well off the pace. I expect the Buccaneers to push New Orleans all the way, but I still have the Saint coming out on top.

EAST:

It’s more than likely going to be a 2-horse race in the East. While Dallas and Philadelphia renew their rivalry the Giants and Washington will take up their usual spots as also-rans by the looks of it. The injury issues are already picking up where they left off for the Eagles, who limped home in front of the Cowboys last year but if they can get any luck staying healthy would be favourites to stay top again in 2020.
The Cowboys will be relying on Mike McCarthy providing the energy and spark they lacked all too often last year under Jason Garrett. There is plenty of talent throughout this team, but I have questions regarding their resilience.
Washington will be looking to establish a new culture after another offseason of turmoil. Hiring Ron Rivera was a good start.
And the Giants probably just lack the firepower to get themselves in the mix but could show a marked improvement on recent poor seasons.

I have the Eagles winning the division again purely because of their ability to deal with adversity which they have shown time and time again.

WEST:

Our last division left to look at maybe the best. I am expecting an all-out war in the NFC West. San Francisco will look to put their SuperBowl disappointment behind them and go one step further this year. There was no major surgery done, or needed, in the offseason, and no reason to suggest they won’t be a factor in the playoffs again.
The Seahawks will be a force again this year. The trade for Safety Jamal Adams from the Jets could have swung the pendulum in their favor.
The Los Angeles Rams will be looking to put a disappointing 2019 season behind them. The big question for them is finding a way to make up for the loss of Todd Gurley who was a talisman for the 2018 SuperBowl run.
And the Arizona Cardinals are garnering a lot of hype, especially since getting DeAndre Hopkins from Houston. It got eve better for them in the draft when talented linebacker Isaiah Simmons fell into their laps.

I’m really excited for this division. Whoever makes it out of here will no doubt be well battle tested for the playoffs. I think the Seahawks may have stolen an edge on San Fran and, like the Broncos earlier, the Cardinals could be gearing up for a breakout year. The Rams are very capable of keeping pace too.

Who Makes the Playoffs?

In the AFC I have Buffalo, Kansas City, Tennessee, and Cleveland in an upset as my division winners. The Broncos, Colts, and Ravens are my wildcard picks.

The NFC shapes up with the Seahawks, Packers, Eagles, and Saints winning their respective divisions. The Vikings, 49ers, and Buccaneers make up the wildcard places narrowly squeezing out the Cowboys and Cardinals.

All in all, we seem to be set for a very interesting season, one which I can’t wait to get started!

Liverpool vs Leeds Preview, Predicted Teams, Where to watch, Betting

Liverpool begin their title defence at home to Leeds on Saturday evening.

Klopp led the Merseysiders to their first Premier League title in style last season. Ultimately, they finished 18 points ahead of second-placed Man City. He’ll hope to be able to repeat the trick but Leeds will be up for this one.

After a 16 year absence, Leeds are back in the top flight. Marco Bielsa cemented his legacy by finally winning promotion. Thankfully, recent years have shown that a good finish is possible for newly promoted teams. For example, Wolves and Sheffield United both managed top-half finishes in their first season.

The arrival of Rodrigo is a sign of good intentions. The striker will bring a danger with him that Leeds are going to need. Bielsa will not be content with promotion though. Instead, we can expect Leeds to take the game to teams. It’ll be baptism by fire for Leeds in Anfield.

Can Liverpool go Back-to-Back?

In the last decade, only one team managed to retain their title. Man City did it in 2018/19 but it took 98 points. It’s entirely possible that Liverpool could replicate this but they can’t afford to let up. Other teams have strengthened in the offseason. Chelsea and Man United have bolstered their squads through transfers. Elsewhere, Arsenal will be fuelled by their Community Shield win last week.

Man City have been active in the transfer market too. Their defence was highlighted as a weak point last season. As a result, Guardiola has brought in Prem-proven Nathan Aké. In addition, rumours that Napoli’s Koulibaly is a target should be taken seriously.

in contrast, Liverpool have been quiet in the market so far. Konstantinos Tsimikas has come in to backup Andy Robertson. On the other hand, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana have gone elsewhere. With a packed fixture list, Klopp will need a full squad. Youngsters such as Rhian Brewster, Neco Williams, Harvey Elliott, and Curtis Jones will are good offerings to have. However, over the course of a season, experience will come in handy. If they do manage to land Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, it will be a huge boost.

Predicted Teams:

Liverpool: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Djik, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Keita, Salah, Firmino, Mané

Leeds: Meslier, Dallas, Ayling, Cooper, Douglas, Kalvin-Phillips, Costa, Klich, Hernandez, Harrison, Bamford

Tottenham vs Everton Preview, Predicted Teams, Where to Watch, Betting

Tottenham Hotspur host Everton in their Premier League opener this Sunday.

Everton have been busy in the transfer window recently. Fans will be hoping to see new signings James Rodriguez and Allan as soon as possible.

Rodriguez reunites with Carlo Ancelotti once again. The Colombian signed from Real Madrid for £22 million. Likewise, midfielder Allan has worked with Ancelotti before. The two became familiar with each other while at Napoli.

In goal, Jordan Pickford hopes to rediscover his form from 2018. In addition, if the partnership of Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin can click the Toffees will be a threat at both ends of the pitch. Fans will have high expectations from their team this year.

In the same way, Tottenham have bolstered their squad. Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have been recruited by Mourinho. These experienced Premier League players will sure up the Spurs’ ship.

Harry Kane will be fresh off international duty and ready to hit the ground running. Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris is back between the sticks after recovering from injury.

Tottenham pushed for the top four last season but ultimately came up short. Finishing in sixth, they have to improve to keep up with the teams around them. Players such as Dele Alli and Lo Celso will need to come of age this season.

Predicted Line-ups

Tottenham: Lloris, Doherty, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Davies, Hojbjerg, Winks, Alli, Lo Celso, Son, Kane (4-2-3-1)

Everton: Pickford, Coleman, Mina, Keane, Digne, Gomes, Davies, Sigurdsson, Rodriguez, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison (4-3-3)

Tottenham 4/5, Draw 13/5, Everton 16/5 (Paddy Power)

West Brom v Leicester: Preview, Predicted Teams, Where to watch, Betting

Leicester City kick off their league season with a trip to newly-promoted West Brom.

Brendan Rogers will be frustrated at his sides’ poor finish to last season. As a result, they finished just outside the Champion’s League spots.

In contrast, the Baggies finished strongly to secure second place in the Championship. After a two-year absence, they return to the top flight. Slaven Bilic’s Premier League experience will be a valuable asset. Previously, he was West Ham’s manager between 2015 and 2017.

Rogers has been relatively inactive in the transfer window so far. Ben Chilwell is the major name to leave the club. He joined Chelsea for a reported £50 million. Nonetheless, Rogers recruited Timothy Castagne from Atalanta to fill the void.

Meanwhile, West Brom have poached midfielder Grady Diangana from West Ham. He joins new signings Matheus Pereira, Cedric Kipre, and David Button.

Leicester are favourites to take all three points here. With Europa League football in their schedule this year, it’s important for the Foxes to start the season well. In addition, rapid turnarounds between games will take a toll over the course of a season. Thankfully, Jamie Vardy is getting better with age. Now 33, Vardy won the Golden Boot last season with 23 goals.

Predicted Line-ups

West Brom: Johnstone, O’Shea, Ajayi, Bartley, Gibbs, Livermore, Sawyers, Grosicki, Pereira, Diangana, Austin (4-2-3-1)

Leicester: Schmeichal, Justin, Morgan, Soyuncu, Albrighton, Ndidi, Tielemans, Castagne, Perez, Vardy, Barnes (3-4-3)

Betting: West Brom 11/4, Draw 5/2, Leicester, 10/11 (Paddy Power)

Cork Club Hurling Championship Quarter – Final’s Preview

The race for the Cork Club Hurling Championship is hotting up. With Patrick Horgan and Glen Rovers waiting in the last four – who will join them in the race for the Seán Óg Murphy Cup? There is a feast of Cork SHC action down on Leeside this weekend.

SEPT 12th Sarsfields v Erin’s Own PÁIRC UÍ CHAOIMH 7.30

Erin’s Own have lived on the edge thus far. They were sluggish against Blackrock. To their credit, they rallied impressively and almost got something out of the game. They then needed a last gasp goal to edge Newtownshandrum. Robbie O’Flynn is a class act and they will need him firing here.

Sarsfield’s eased into the last eight when steamrolling Ballyhea 2-30 to, 1-15. Liam Healy, Jack O’Connor, and James Sweeney have all been hugely impressive. With wins over Midelton and Douglas, they have been the form team so far. They will fancy their chances against a misfiring Erin’s Own.

Click here for live GAA scores

SUNDAY SEPT 13 Douglas v Blackrock PÁIRC UÍ CHAOIMH 2 PM

Douglas had a real dog-fight with Middelton before emerging as one-point winners. Shane Kingston finished with 0-10 to his credit and added seven of these from frees. Alan Cadogan was at his imperious best in the first half. Brian Turnbull then took up the slack, as Middelton could not conjure up the draw they needed to advance.

Blackrock were impressive in topping their group. They had nine points to spare over Bishopstown in their last group fixture. The 2017 Cork County finalists may not have the big-name stars of their opponents, but they are a formidable unit. Alan Connolly and Tadhg Deasy have been flying. They accounted for Erin’s Own by four points in an impressive opening championship salvo. If they can limit the influence of Cadogan and Kingston, they could well progress here.

SUNDAY SEPT 13 UCC v Na Piarsaigh  SHC PÁIRC UÍ RINN 7 PM

Na Piarsaigh have stellar performers in Evan Sheehan, Shane Forde, and Christopher Joyce. They will want to forget their last group encounter, however.  Patrick Horgan and Co inflicted a 15 point hammering on the Northside club.

Could UCC bridge a 50-year gap to their last Cork club hurling title. They eliminated champions Imokilly in the last round. The conundrum as ever is player availability. In some cases, a player might line out with his club on a Sunday afternoon, and subsequently, don the UCC colors on Sunday night. It is hardly ideal but that is the nature of UCC. If they get the likes of Shane Conway and Mark Coleman on the pitch, they could well prevail here.

Owen Farrell finally punished for dangerous tackling

Owen Farrell finally crossed the line for dangerous tackles. Or rather, crossing the line finally led to punishment.

Last Saturday, Farrell’s shoulder made contact with the head of Wasps’ Charlie Atkinson. This led to the referee giving Farrell a straight red card.

In fact, this is far from the first time Farrell’s discipline is under scrutiny. For a long time, leading with his shoulders in the tackle has led to criticism.

Two such tackles came from Farrell during the 2018 Autumn Internationals. Firstly, he shoulder charged Andre Esterhuizen of South Africa. This tackle went unpunished. Nevertheless, referees were shown a directive of what to protect players from prior to the 2019 World Cup. This tackle was actually used as an example of a red card offence.

Secondly, three weeks later Farrell was back in the spotlight. Farrell blocked Australia’s Izack Rodda with a shoulder. The illegal hit went unpunished when the Wallabies at least deserved a penalty try.

The England captain admittedly worker on changing his tackling technique after this.

https://twitter.com/btsportrugby/status/1303636615877754880

However, last weekend’s incident left the referee no choice but to show a red. Officials considered the breach high-end. Therefore, the punishment was initially a 10-week ban.

Owen Farrell allowed special treatment?

Subsequently, Farrell received special treatment again. Testimonials from Mark McCall, Eddie Jones, and a charity associated with Farrell, convinced the independent disciplinary panel to halve his ban.

Panel chair Mike Hamlin said: “It was accepted by the RFU, the player, and the panel that the offending was reckless and not intentional”.

This has led to controversy over the testimonials’ relevance. Many have questioned why the player’s charity work affects his character on the pitch.

In contrast, when Farrell has been on the receiving end of such tackles, no such sympathy has been shown. On two occasions in 2019’s World Cup, illegal tackles were made on Farrell.

To begin, a shoulder charge on Farrell was a straight red card for USA Rugby’s John Quill. As a result, he missed the rest of the tournament. Next, Argentina’s Tomas Lavanini failed to hit Farrell at a low height. Immediately, Nigel Owens sent him off. Yet, Farrell stayed on the pitch. Such a tackle would usually require a Head Injury Assessment but no such check took place.

The 5-week ban means Farrell will miss Saracen’s Champions Cup quarter-final against Leinster. With guaranteed relegation, this competition is Saracen’s only chance for a trophy this year. Besides this, Leinster will be the toughest team Saracens are likely to meet in the competition. Without their talisman, victory is even harder.

However, Farrell will be back for England’s busy winter fixture list. This is partly thanks to international head coach Eddie Jones.

With the threshold finally crossed for disciplining Owen Farrell, perhaps the spotlight on his physicality will only get brighter.

Capt Geoff Curran crowned 2020 Irish National Show Jumping Champion

Waterford-born Army rider Capt Geoff Curran and The Minister For Defence-owned Irish Sport Horse Glengarra Wood have been crowned 2020 Irish National Show Jumping Champions following Sunday’s Horse Sport Ireland Premier Series Final at Portmore Equestrian Centre.

Capt Curran had been sitting in second place on the league table before Portmore and a fifth place finish in the final saw him overtake leader Ger O’Neill and MHS High Hopes.

A nail-biting finish saw Kevin Gallagher and The Irish Sport Horse Ballypatrick Flamenco win the HSI Premier Series Grand Prix at Portmore with one of just two double clear rounds.

Nine combinations went through to the jump-off and Gallagher took the lead when second last to go with Ballypatrick Flamenco, owned by Greg Broderick. Kenneth Graham put in a great effort when last to go with George and their clear round would see them finish as runners-up while Anthony O’Regan and Feedback finished third with two time faults in the first round followed by a clear against the clock.

Kevin Gallagher and Ballypatrick Flamenco’s win in Portmore saw them finish as league runners-up while Ger O’Neill and MHS High Hopes took third place overall.

Shane Lowry confirmed for Dubai Duty Free Irish Open

Shane Lowry will play in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open for the first time since his career-defining Open Championship triumph, at Galgorm Castle Golf Club in Antrim from September 24-27.

The 33-year-old Offaly man lifted the Claret Jug in front of his home fans last year following a six-stroke win over England’s Tommy Fleetwood at Royal Portrush Golf Club.

It will be Lowry’s first appearance on the European Tour – outside of the WGC-Mexico Championship, WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational and US PGA Championship – since February, when he claimed a top 15 finish at the Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisors.

The Clara player’s Open victory last year was his fifth European Tour title and came six months after the he had broken a five-year winning duck at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA, sealing his first Rolex Series title.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back home to play the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” said Lowry.

“As a proud Irishman, this event means a lot to me and is always one of the most important tournaments on my schedule each year. While it’s been extremely challenging for all players to plan their global tournament schedules this season, I wanted to do everything possible to get home to play the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and I’m delighted that I’ve been able to commit to this year’s tournament given the circumstances.”

“Obviously I was really looking forward to playing in front of our home fans as the Open Champion this year, which would have been really special, but sadly it’s not to be” he added.

“I’m sure everyone will be supporting from home and watching the event on TV, so hopefully I can put in a good performance at Galgorm Castle and give the Irish fans something to shout about. I’ve been fortunate enough to win the Irish Open already and I would dearly love to win it again.”

2020 SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Dublin cancelled

European Athletics today confirmed the cancellation of the 2020 edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships that was due to take place in Dublin, on 13 December.

As a part of yesterday’s Executive Board meeting held in Lausanne, Switzerland, European Athletics spoke with the Fingal-Dublin 2020 Local Organising Committee concerning the current Covid-19 situation in Ireland and the impact that this may have on the 2020 European Cross Country Championships.

It soon became clear that due to the overall uncertainty on hosting mass sporting events, the existing sanitary restrictions in Ireland, and the travel restrictions imposed across Europe due to the coronavirus pandemic, it would not be possible to host the event as scheduled.

“The decision to cancel the Fingal-Dublin 2020 SPAR European Cross Country Athletics Championships was a very tough choice for European Athletics. Following the cancellation of the Paris 2020 European Athletics Championship a few months ago, this was the last opportunity for a major European Athletics event this year and cancelling it was not an option we chose lightly,” said  European Athletics Interim President Dobromir Karamarinov.

“I know that all the athletes and entire athletics community were looking forward to this event but I ask them to keep heart. I would like to pay tribute to both the local organising committee for their commitment and hard work to date, and to Athletics Ireland for their fantastic support while we deal with these difficult times for our sport,” concluded Karamarinov.

Chairman of the Fingal-Dublin 2020 Local Organising Committee Liam Hennessy said:

“We are disappointed that Fingal-Dublin will not have the opportunity to host the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in 2020 but we feel this was the only decision to make based on the current situation regarding Covid-19.”
