Six Nations: Top Betting Markets

The Six Nations is just days away now so I have decided to look at the top betting markets ahead of the tournament.

Grand Slam Winner

The current suggest that at odds of evens their will be no winner of the Grand Slam in 2020. However, England are 13/8 to win the Grand Slam so not much really in it. If you fancy Ireland to win all five games in the competition they are 9/1 to do so. 2019 Championship winners Wales are 12/1 to win all games, France are 14/1, while Scotland who Ireland face in their first game are 100/1. Italy are a massive 500/1 to win all games in the tournament. No Grand Slam winner at 13/8 could be a good bet.

Top Try scorer

England’s Jonny May is the favourite to claim the top try scorer award. May finished top try scorer in the 2019 Six Nations and he is 7/2 to do so again here. Josh Adams of Wales is next at odds of 7/2. Adams finished top try scorer at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Looking at some other players closer to home Jacob Stockdale is 9/1, while Garry Ringrose who has been in top form for Leinster this season is 25/1. Josh Adams at 7/2 would be the selection.

Top Point Scorer

This market mainly comes down to kickers of the teams. Owen Farrell was top point scorer in 2019 and he is favourite at odds of 11/8 to be again. Ireland’s Johnny Sexton won’t be too far behind him if he remains fit and he is 9/2. Wales fly-half Dan Biggar is 7/2. Finn Russell is also in the mix but he will miss the opening game of the tournament he is around 8/1. It is hard to look past Farrell at 11/8.

Player of the Tournament

This is quite tricky to call but several England players head the market. Maro Itoje is around 10/1 to win the award at 10/1. His fellow forwards Sam Underhill and Tom Curry are both 12/1. Josh Adams and Alun Wyn Jones are two Welsh players that head the market at 12 and 14/1 respectively. James Ryan is Ireland’s best hopeful at 20/1. However, some outside bets could be Stuart Hogg at 50/1, CJ Stander at 66/1 and George Kruis 100/1.

Cork come into this game on the back of a narrow loss to Waterford at Walsh Park last weekend. Kieran Kingston’s charges lost out 1-24 to 3-17 in the end. In truth though Cork should have won. They amassed 17 wides in total in the game. However, the performances of Damian Cahalane who scored three points and Shane Kingston who scored 2-02 really impressed me. Pat Horgan was the player maker for two of Cork’s three goals. Cork have room for improvement and there is no better to judge that improvement with a game against All-Ireland Champions Tipperary. Speaking following the game he told RTE Sport, “Part of what we’re trying to do during the league is rotate the squad a little bit and particularly in the next couple of weeks when you have a lot of guys involved in college hurling”.

Tipperary will travel to Leeside looking for their first win of the campaign. Liam Sheedy’s side lost the game to Limerick despite leading the game by 10 points at half time. They will look to make up for that loss with a win here. John McGrath was impressive in the first half and he will need another big performance here. Seamus Callanan was on the bench so he may some game time. Speaking to the Irish Times Liam Sheedy said, I’d take huge encouragement from what I’ve seen, especially in trying to build a competitive panel for what lies ahead”. The Portroe man continued, “It’s early days, we’re not as far on as we would have been this time last year, physically”.

Team News

The teams have yet to be revealed by the managers. Once we get them we will post here.

Betting

Tipperary are 5/6 to win this game, while Cork are priced at 13/10. Not much to separate the sides. I think Tipperary will win this though as they will want to make up for the second half performance against Limerick last weekend. Cork v Tipperary throws in at 7pm and is live on RTE Sport.

Division 1A Hurling: Limerick v Galway, Preview, Team News and live scores

Limerick v Galway takes place in Division 1A of the hurling league on Sunday. The game throws in at 2.30pm in the Gaelic Grounds. We have a preview as well as team news and betting. If you can’t follow the game follow our match tracker.

Preview
Limerick come into the game on the back of a 2-14 to 0-18 win over Tipperary last weekend. Many in the crowd and those watching at home probably thought Tipperary were going to blow the Shannonsiders away after their first half performance. In fact John Kiely’s side were 10 points down at the break. However, Barry Nash, William O’Donoghue and Diarmuid Byrnes thundered into the game in the second half. John Kiely speaking to RTE said, “It was a great warning sign for us, that these things can happen. We thought we had our preparation bang on the money coming in to tonight but for whatever reason we just weren’t at it. It’s a warning shot for us going forward and it’s a good time of year to get that warning shot.”
Galway come into this game on the back of a 1-24 to 0-10 win over Westmeath at Pearse Stadium. There was some big performances from Tadhg Harnan, Joe Canning and Conor Whelan. This will be a much tougher game than that but it promises to be exciting with the amount of quality players that will be on show. Speaking to Galway Bay FM, Galway vice captain Conor Whelan said he is looking forward to the game, he said, “It will be a big test, from our perspective we are focus on ourselves really. The Kinvara man said “It’s good to be getting competitive games this time of the year and it will be a true reflection of where were at”.
Team News
Teams have yet to be revealed by the respective managers John Kiely and Shane O’Neill. Once we get them we will post here.
Betting
Limerick are 4/6 favourites to win this game, while the Westerners are a tasty looking 15/8. Home advantage counts for a lot and Limerick should make it count and win by 2 or 3 points. Limerick v Galway throws in at 2.30pm and is live on TG4 GAA BEO.

Rugby World Cup Draw to take place in November

The draw for the 2021 Rugby World Cup will take in November it has been confirmed. World Rugby and the French Organising committee said the pool draw for the 2023 Rugby World Cup will take place in Paris after the November internationals in 2020.

This tournament will have 20 teams. 12 of those will have gained automatic qualification through their ranking in the 2019 Rugby World Cup. This means, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Ireland, France, England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, Argentina, Japan and Fiji are all guaranteed places.

Furthermore, as with all Rugby World Cups. The 12 teams outlined above will be seeded. This is broken down into three bands, 1, 2 and 3, 4 and 5. These bands will be determined after the November international games have taken place. However, if you were for example to look at the bands as they would be now. Ireland would be in Band 2 alongside Australia, Japan and France. South Africa and New Zealand would be in band 1 along with England and Wales. Band 3 would see Gregor Townshend’s Scotland, Argentina, Fiji and Italy.

Bands 4 and 5 will come from the 8 teams that will have to qualify for the tournament. Some of these games will begin this year. World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont said, “The pool draw is an important milestone on the road to Rugby World Cup 2023 in France as it really drives excitement and momentum both in the host nation and throughout the global rugby family – it is the moment teams and fans can start to plan”.

Ireland fans will of course be looking forward to the Six Nations this weekend. However, in the long term of things we all would hope they can get past the quarter-final in the next rugby World Cup.

Division 1B Hurling: Wexford v Clare, Preview, Team News and live scores.

Wexford v Clare in Division 1b of the hurling league promises to be a big game in Wexford Park. It will pit old team mates Davy Fitzgerald and Brian Lohan together on the sidelines. Let’s take a look at. preview, team news and betting ahead of the game.  However, if you can’t make it we will have live scores.

Preview

A win for either side will set them up nicely as both sides will still have Kilkenny and Dublin to play in Division 1b. Davy Fitzgerald was delighted with Wexford’s 2-27 to 2-16 win over Laois in Portlaoise last weekend. He stated before the game it wasn’t a game he was looking forward to. However, speaking to RTE following the game on Saturday night he said, “I thought we played really good stuff in the first half. But we shouldn’t have been going in up two points. “We should have been up way more.” Davy also alluded to this game with Clare in which he said “it will be a tough one”. He continued, “So it is what it is and we’ll just tear into it and see what happens.”

Brian Lohan’s Clare will come into the game on the back of a big win over Carlow at Ennis last weekend. It was a game in which former hurler of the year Tony Kelly starred in racking up 0-12. This will be a much sterner test for the Shannonsiders. Knowing that Davy is on the sideline for Wexford also adds a bit of spice to the game. Speaking after the game Brian Lohan said to Clare FM, “It was a tough enough first half, but we pulled away in the second half we were a bit stronger than them”. The former Clare full back when asked about the Wexford game said.  It’s big test, big challenge going down there (Wexford Park), but we are looking forward to it”.

Team News

Teams have yet to be named by the respective managers. Once we get them we will publish here.

Betting

Wexford are 8/11 to win this game, while Clare are priced at 13/8. For me home advantage counts for a lot and Wexford to me will come out on top by 2 or 3 points. Wexford v Clare will be deferred on TG4 following the Limerick v Galway game.

Has Andy Farrell picked the right team to play Scotland

So with Andy Farrell naming his first Ireland team, We have to ask has he picked the right team to play Scotland on Saturday?

My honest answer is no he hasn’t considering 13 of the side that started against Scotland start in the World Cup start here. Rory Best is retired, Rob Herring replaces him here and Caelan Dorris comes in to replace Peter O’Mahony who is on the bench. Personally, would like to see some other players get their opportunity to start.

John Cooney must wonder what he has to do to get into the team. He has put in some exceptional performances for Ulster this season. He is very unlucky. In saying that some may argue their is not much changing that can be done to the team. Stuart McCloskey is also unlucky not to start as is Chris Farrell. Max Deegan is another player that probably on form should be in the squad and starting this game.

Leinster’s Ronan Kelleher is on the bench but he probably should be starting as well ahead of Rob Herring. However, Kelleher has been out with an injury so this is probably why. The Ireland team in full for the game can be got here.

Whatever we look at it though we need to give Andy Farrell time. He will have learned the trade from his time working with Joe Schmidt. He will know the players, he will know what will be required to beat Gregor Townsend’s side on Saturday.

Whether they will or not is another question but they should have to much firepower for a Scotland side that will be without Finn Russell.  Lets hope Andy Farrell and his team can deliver a big 80 minutes at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday.

Gaelic football Super 8’s predictions

Making predictions of the teams that will play Super 8’s in 2020 is easy to pick as

Dublin, Kerry, Donegal, Tyrone, Armagh, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Cork, Meath, Kildare & Monaghan are the only teams in with a realistic chance of playing Super 8 Football. Looking at what way the groups can line up for the Super 8’s can give you an idea of what you might expect to plan out come the end of July.

Group one Super 8’s predictions

The Connacht runner up will play either the Leinster runner up or the winner of a round 4 qualifier. The Connacht dra kept Galway and Mayo apart so these will likely meet in the final. I think Galway at present would beat Mayo. So Galway would be the winner in this instance, they would likely face Kildare, I expect Kildare to reach the Leinster final but lose to Dublin. A round 4 qualifier winner could be any side. The other fixture in the group will see Ulster winner which I think Tyrone will be in 2020 face the Munster runner up. I expect this to be Cork.  So Group 1 of the Super 8’s will likely be Mayo, Kildare, Tyrone and Cork or a round 4 winner. Furthermore, these games will likely be played on 11/12th of July.

Group Two Super 8’s predictions

Group 2 will see the Leinster provincial runner up face the Ulster runner up. Going on the Ulster draw for 2020 I expect Monaghan to be the runners up. This will mean Banty McEnaney’s men will likely face Dublin. They should win Leinster again. Also in Group 2 the Munster winner in this case I think will be Kerry will face the Connacht runner up. I expect this to be Mayo. So that will see a Kerry v Mayo in the first round. So Group 2 of the Super 8’s will likely be Monaghan, Dublin, Kerry and Mayo or a round 4 winner.

Group 1

Mayo, Kildare, Tyrone, Cork, or Round 4 winner

Group 2

Monaghan, Dublin, Kerry, Mayo or Round 4 winner.

Under 20 Rugby – Ireland v Scoland – Team news – Kick off 7:15pm Friday

Ireland U20s play Scotland at 7.15 pm on Friday night in Donnybrook, in their first home game of the U20 Six Nations Championship.

Head Coach Noel McNamara has named a 37-man Ireland Under-20 squad, sponsored by PwC, for the upcoming Six Nations Championship, with seven players from last year’s Grand Slam-winning panel included for the 2020 season.

Ulster Academy back row David McCann, who last season helped McNamara’s side to a memorable clean sweep of Six Nations victories, has been appointed captain ahead of the opening fixture against Scotland at Irish Independent Park on Friday, January 31 (kick-off 7.15pm, live on RTÉ2).

McCann, who has previously captained Ireland Under-19s, is joined in the squad by Munster Academy second row Thomas Ahern and the Leinster contingent of Thomas ClarksonBrian DeenyJohn McKeeCharlie Ward and Max O’Reilly, who are all involved at this age-grade for a second season.

McNamara and his assistant coaches, Kieran Campbell and Colm Tucker, are excited about the strength in depth and overall dynamic of this year’s group having had to make a number of difficult selection decisions.

Cork Constitution’s Jack Crowley has featured heavily for Munster ‘A’ this season and impressed against his native province during the annual challenge match over Christmas, with the out-half scoring 13 points off the tee in a six-try win.

Crowley is one of five Munster players in McNamara’s final panel alongside Ahern, Academy second row Eoin O’ConnorCian Hurley of Garryowen and UCC centre Harry O’Riordan.

Ulster hooker Tom Stewart was another standout performer in the game against Munster Development last month and leads a seven-player Ulster contingent, including Academy centre Hayden Hyde and winger Ethan McIlroy.

19-year-old McIlroy has already made his senior debut for Ulster having come off the bench during the northern province’s Guinness PRO14 defeat to Leinster at the RDS last month, while powerful number eight Joshua Dunne leads the Connacht contingent of four.

“It’s always a very exciting time for these young players when the Six Nations comes around,” McNamara said. “We have been working through the selection process since last year, which has culminated in today’s 37-man squad announcement.

“It was a tough selection and there are a number of players who are unlucky to miss out. It’s important to note at this stage that selection will be ongoing and players from outside this group will have further opportunities to impress throughout the season.”

Having enjoyed huge success in front of sold-out crowds at Irish Independent Park last year, the Cork venue will again play host to the Ireland Under-20 home games, and the visit of Scotland on the opening night is followed by a clash against Wales on Friday, February 7 (kick-off 7.15pm and tickets are available here).

After a down week, McNamara’s side are on the road to face England at Franklin’s Gardens on Friday, February 21 (kick-off 7.45pm) and then it’s back to Irish Independent Park in round four for a meeting with Italy on Friday, March 6 (kick-off 7.15pm and tickets are available here).

Ireland will conclude their campaign against France at the Stade Aime Giral in Perpignan on Friday, March 13 (kick-off 8pm).

On returning to Irish Independent Park, McNamara continued: “Everyone is hugely enthusiastic about getting back down to our home in Irish Independent Park in Cork. We we will have three tough games there this year against Scotland, Wales and Italy under lights on Friday nights. I have absolutely no doubt about the raucous reception that awaits our team and our opponents.”

Feargal O’Rourke, PwC Ireland Managing Partner, commented: “The development of talent, collaboration, team-work and the pursuit of excellence are core values of PwC, and are the hallmarks of this team. It is these shared values that have made our partnership with the IRFU so successful over the last 14 years.

“The team are excellent ambassadors for the country, for Irish Rugby and for PwC Ireland. We wish them the best of luck as they defend their Championship title, which they won in such style by clinching a Grand Slam in 2019.”

Amazing weekend’s racing ahead at Dublin Racing Festival

It’s going to be a great weekend of racing at Leopardstown at the Dublin racing festival with stars like Kemboy, Delta Work, Honeysuckle, Min, A Plus Tard and Notebook running.

Kemboy & Delta Work, trained by Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott respectively head the 10 acceptors for Sunday’s Irish Gold Cup, the richest prize of the two-days.

Also remaining on the Mullins will also be looking to register a win in the race with Bellshill, last year’s winner, and Cadmuim. La Bague Au Roi, trained by Warren Greatrex, stands her ground as do Sizing John, the winner in 2017, and Jett, both trained by Jessica Harrington.

The Pat Kelly-trained Presenting Percy, Henry De Bromhead’s Chris’s Dream and Anibale Fly, trained by Tony Martin, are also likely to take their chance.

Eleven horses have stood their ground for the Grade 1 PCI Irish Champion Hurdle on Saturday, with De Bromhead’s Honeysuckle the banker of the meeting according to this website, she is putting her unbeaten record on the line in a cracking renewal of the race that is likely to see her face the Mullins-trained Sharjah and Klassical Dream.

Previous winners Supasundae and Petit Mouchoir are still in the mix for Jessica Harrington and Henry De Bromhead as are Gavin Cromwell’s Darver Star and the British raider Monsieur Lecoq, trained by Jane Williams.

The first of the eight Grade 1s over the two days is the Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors ‘€50,000 Cheltenham Bonus For Stable Staff’ Novice Hurdle. Taken out of the PCI Irish Champion Hurdle, Gordon Elliott’s Envoi Allen has been entered for both novice hurdles. Paul Nolan’s Grade 2 winner Latest Exhibition is among the 18 remaining here and his opposition could well include Gordon Elliott’s Fury Road, the Martin Brassil-trained Longhouse Poet and Joseph O’Brien’s Anything Will Do. A strong entry from the Willie Mullins yard includes Elixir D’ainay, Asterion Forlonge and Janidil.

Eight horses go forward for the Grade 1 Ladbrokes Dublin Chase including Min which is bidding to win the race for the third successive year. He figures in a super strong Willie Mullins quartet that is made up of Chacun Pour Soi, Duc Des Genievres and Cilaos Emery. A Plus Tard, which added his Cheltenham Festival success with a thrilling win at the top level at Leopardstown at Christmas and last year’s runner-up Ordinary World and Ornua could yet represent Henry De Bromhead while Castlegrace Paddy, trained by Pat Fahy, also stands his ground.

The Henry De Bromhead-trained Notebook heads the nine horses remaining in the Grade 1 ERSG Arkle Novice Chase. Unbeaten in three starts over fences, he could again clash with the Joseph O’Brien-trained Fakir D’oudairies in the race where Willie Mullins could be represented by the impressive Naas winners Cash Back and Bapaume. Melon could also play a part for the champion trainer.

The first of the Grade 1 races on Sunday is the Tattersalls Ireland Spring Juvenile Hurdle and the 10 horses are headed by Henry De Bromhead’s exciting dual winner Aspire Tower which is likely to bid for a second Leopardstown success after his runaway victory in the Grade 2 Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle at Christmas. Joseph O’Brien has in left both Cerberus and A Wave Of The Sea with Gavin Cromwell’s Wolf Prince another likely fancy.

Grade 1 winners Abacadabras and Envoi Allen stand out among the 15 entries for the Chanelle Pharma Novice Hurdle. Their trainer Gordon Elliott could also be represented by Easywork and Conflated while Willie Mullins has left five in the race including Asterion Forlonge and Saint Roi.

Battleoverdoyen and the veteran Faugheen lead the way for Elliott and Mullins respectively in the Grade 1 Flogas Novice Chase in which 12 horses remain. Melon and Laurina are also among those going forward for this as is their Closutton stable companion Easy Game. Joseph O’Brien also has the race as a weekend option here for Fakir D’oudairies.

Tim Husbands, CEO of Leopardstown Racecourse, said, “The latest entries have really got us excited for the weekend for the undeniable quality that we’re going to see over the two days. All the preparations have been made and now we just cant wait until the off on Saturday!”
