Carabao Cup 2021/22 R3 Draw

The Carabao Cup round three draw took place on Wednesday night with 16 ties to look forward to in the next round of the tournament.

The third-round ties will take place in the week commencing September 20, which is after the first international break of the year.

The number of teams in the tournament has been whittled down to 32 after two action-packed rounds.

Joint-record winners Liverpool will travel to Carrow Road for the second time in a handful of games to face Norwich City.

Holders Manchester City will host Wycombe on their quest for a ninth league cup and bragging rights with the outright most wins.

City have won the last four Carabao Cups in a row and have won six of the last eight on their way to equalling Liverpool’s long-standing record.

Inter-city rivals Manchester United will welcome former boss David Moyes to Old Trafford once again when they play West Ham United.

2019-20 finalists Aston Villa will travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Thomas Tuchel’s UEFA Champions League winners and 2018-19 finalists Chelsea.

Last season’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur will visit Wolves at the Molineux in a fixture that will see Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo pitted against his old club for the second time in a month.

There are two non-Premier League ties in the third round of the competition –  Preston vs Cheltenham and Wigan vs Sunderland.

The 16 ties leave a lot of room for upsets and drama as the big sides are not expected to field their strongest teams.

Derry SHC – Preview, Fixtures, Where To Watch

The 2021 Derry Senior Hurling Championship begins on Friday, August 27 when record champions Kevin Lynch’s host Lavey at Páirc Chaomhín Uí Loingsigh, and defending champions Slaughtneil take on Ballinascreen.

This year’s instalment of the county championship includes a group stage – two groups of four, where each team in a group plays each other once before a knockout stage helps determine the winner.

Group A consists of Ballinascreen, Banagher, Eoghan Rua and Slaughtneil while Group B involves Kevin Lynch’s, Lavey, Na Magha and Swatragh.

Slaughtneil come into the 2021 Derry SHC as reigning champions and have not relinquished their crown since winning the first of eight-in-a-row in 2013.

The side will be hungry to continue that streak and their dominance in both Gaelic football and hurling with another county championship victory.

Kevin Lynch’s are seen as the biggest threat to Slaughtneil’s conquest of Derry as the 23-time champions search for their first title in 10 years.

Lavey and Swatragh’s league campaigns are seen as impressive within the county and they are expected to impress again in the championship.

However, both teams are in a group with Kevin Lynch’s, meaning one of the three teams will be out of the competition before we reach knock-out hurling.

Liverpool To Face Norwich In R3 Of Carabao Cup

Liverpool have been drawn to face Norwich City in round three of the 2021/22 Carabao Cup after the conclusion of the round two fixtures.

The third round draw was made on Wednesday evening with 32 teams involved in it, 60 less than the competition had in the beginning.

The third-round ties will take place in the week commencing September 20, which is after the first international break of the year.

Liverpool will travel to Carrow Road for the second time in a handful of games to face Norwich City.

Norwich thrashed Bournemouth 6-0 at home in the second round and will be hoping to pull off an upset to reach the fourth round.

Debutant Christos Tzolis scored a brace and assisted two further goals in the rout while American Josh Sargeant scored twice and assisted one on the night.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke made 10 changes after his side’s heavy defeat to Manchester City.

However, Farke was quick to put a stop to any overreactions after the victory.

He said: “It is important that you deliver a good performance, but we also have to be a bit careful.

“This was a game on Championship level, top Championship level, and it proves that if we played there then we would probably romp the league again.

“But the Premier League is a different animal and I have to make sure I don’t throw some lads too early into the cold water.”

The sides recently met on the opening weekend of the 2021/22 Premier League with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds running out 3-0 victors.

Mohamed Salah and Bobby Firmino got on the scoresheet that day and some Alisson heroics kept the sheet clean but the three stars are not expected to line out for Liverpool in the tie.

Klopp tends to rotate his side for cup fixtures and it is believed that he will do the same for this years instalment of the EFL Cup.

Arsenal finally find win against West Brom reserves

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team have eventually got their first win of the season yesterday while facing West Brom in the EFL Cup

The match kicked off at 20:00 yesterday evening in the Hawthorns for Round Two of the Cup.

Arsenal fans will be delighted to see their club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put in a man-of-the-match performance, scoring a hattrick. Their new signing, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also kept a clean sheet in goals.

Arsenal’s thorough and dominant 6-0 win does come with one large asterisk; West Bromich Albion were playing basically their third-choice team.

The West Brom starting 11 included none of the players from their previous Championship matches. Perpetual loan players Alex Palmer and Adam Reach were given rare starts.

French manager Valerian Ismael seemingly has no care for small domestic cup competitions while he takes charge of the Birmingham side. He also gave the chance for returning and fringe players Robert Snodgrass, Kenneth Zohore, and Cedric Kipre.

West Brom’s main objective for the season is to get an automatic promotion which will not be neglected for any other tournament.

Arsenal can still take some joy in getting their first win in five attempts. The six goals scored yesterday were also the Gunners’ first scores in four games.

The full-strength side was essential for Arsenal, in need of a win. Starts were given to new players Martin Odegaard and Nuno Tavares while Alexander Lacazette reappeared from illness off the bench.

Mikel Arteta’s only worry from this game is that his squad may be tired for their Premier League tie against Manchester City, just three days later. They travel to the Emirates for 12:30 on Saturday, 28th August.

Paralympic Swimming: Keane and Ní Riain qualify for finals

Team Ireland had two swimmers in action early this morning in the Tokyo Aquatic center on Day Two of Paralympic action

Ireland’s busy morning in the pool began just before 03:00 Irish Time.

Róisín Ní Riain – S13 100m Backstroke (Heats)

Ní Riain was looking to go one better from her admirable performances yesterday in the pool. The 16-year-old, in her first Paralympic race, swam a personal best to reach the final.

Today she went in heat two of the 100m backstroke. Starting in lane seven, she lined up against Team USA, Uzbekistani, and Spanish swimmers.

Her good form continued today as she started fast off the blocks and she held a position near the top of the pack at the turn. The speed continued with the final straight and she finished in third place.

Ní Riain swam her second personal best in two days with a time of 1:09.23, this time would be good enough for her to reach the women’s final later today.

Ellen Keane – SB8 100m Breaststroke (Heats)

This was Keane’s first race of her fourth Paralympic Games. The 26-year-old is one of the more experienced Irish athletes in Tokyo and showed her class to qualify for this year’s competition.

Keane would go in lane five and be up against a tough opponent in Pasco from New Zealand.

Both swimmers started very fast and broke out in front ahead of all the other athletes. At the turn, Keane was holding onto Pasco’s shoulder and maintaining the pace.

The final 25-meter stretch was very close as the Irish woman began to attack the finish line. By the narrowest of margins, Keane snuck into first place as they stretched out for the wall.

She can be very happy with herself finishing the heats with the fastest time of 1:21.71, a new personal best, and qualifying in good stead for the finals later today.

Keane seems like a strong medal candidate which is very impressive due to a change in classification last year seemingly leaving her hard done by.

Paralympic Cycling: Both Irish athletes ride personal bests

Team Ireland had two more athletes taking to the Velodrome this morning in Tokyo hoping to improve on Richael Timothy’s performance yesterday

Ireland’s cycling action began early in the morning at 02:00 Irish Time.

Katie-George Dunleavy, Eve McCrystal – Women’s B 1000m Time Trial

Dunleavy piloted by McCrystal went in the final three heats of the women’s time trial. They were looking to push out one of the top three spots all held by members of Team GB but this would be a tough proposition for the usual endurance cyclist.

The pair began their first of four lung-bursting laps with good speed, keeping the bike straight and hugging the line well.

At the halfway point they were two seconds off the leaders with a lot of work to do. After a final push, they finish the one-kilometer race in 1:09.044. The pair managed an average speed of 52.141 km/hr throughout the race.

This heartbreakingly left Dunleavy in fourth place at the time, just outside of medal contention, just over two seconds behind the leader.

The pair ultimately finished in sixth place overall, just over a second longer than the medal times. The Netherlands ‘ Larissa Klaasen took gold while Team GB’s Aileen McGlynn took silver and Belgium’s Griet Hoet got bronze.

Ronan Grimes – Men’s C4-5 1000m Time Trial

Grimes rode in ninth in the Velodrome at 06:00 this morning. This quick race also required riding at break-neck speeds for four laps of the track.

The Irishman did well getting off to a decent start. He completed the one-kilometer race in 1:08.262 which was a personal best for the cyclist.

Sadly this was not enough for him to land in the medal positions but he can be immensely proud to ride so well at his first Paralympic Games.

Manchester City Target Kane To Stay At Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Harry Kane has confirmed that he will stay at the club this summer after Manchester City had several bids for him rejected.

City wanted Kane to replace Sergio Aguero as their number nine after the Argentinian’s departure.

The Spurs striker confirmed his intention to stay at the club on social media on Wednesday morning, ending a long transfer saga.

Kane said on his social media accounts: “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks.

“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success.”

The 28-year-old made his first appearance of the 2021/22 season against Wolves at the weekend.

The English forward came off the bench for the final 18 minutes of the game and picked up a yellow card in added time.

Kane did not travel to Portugal with his Spurs teammates for their Europa Conference League play-off first leg loss to Pacos de Ferreira.

The decision was made by Kane, manager Nuno Espírito Santo and the club.

This was on the back of his apparent refusal to turn up for pre-season training, with links to Manchester City still arising since last season where the striker contributed to 50 goals in 49 games.

Kane was not involved in his side’s opening day Premier League victory over Manchester City.

Manchester City have had several bids for the striker rejected this summer by Daniel Levy and Pep Guardiola has admitted he is interested in signing the England and Spurs captain.

The news of his non-departure comes as a surprise after everything that took place in the saga.

Kane will line out at White Hart Lane once again this season for Spurs.

Chelsea’s Bakayoko ready for loan move to AC Milan

Many may forget but Tiemoue Bakayoko was once a promising signing, expected to be Chelsea’s future midfield general

Antonio Conte first signed the French midfielder from AS Monaco after what was a great season. In a squad that included Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho, and Bernardo Silva they reached the Champions League semi-final.

Although Fabinho stole the headlines in the center of midfield his partner Bakayoko was still very highly rated. Even though he signed for Chelsea in 2017, he has not played a competitive match for the club since 2018.

Three managers and plenty of loan moves later and it is clear that he has no future in Stamford Bridge. Along with Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater, Bakayoko has not even been handed a squad number for the year at Chelsea.

One club that he rekindled some form with was Italian giants AC Milan a few years ago. Milan are looking to loan the player again as they push for Champions League football in Italy.

Even though his contract runs out at the end of the season, Chelsea do not look likely to sell the player. Instead, they will use a contract extension clause to prolong his stay till 2023.

This move could make the Blues between €1 million and €1.5 million with an option to buy next summer. Bakayoko is still estimated to be worth €15 million, hitting his prime at 27 years old.

Chelsea will want to look elsewhere for their next center midfield option. The club has been heavily linked with a move for Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid.

The Blues will have to continue to battle with Manchester United for the Spanish workhorse’s signature. It will be an expensive move with the Madrid club wanting nothing less than €60 million to let go of the player
