Premier League Boxing Day round-up

6 Premier League matches took place on a packed day of action.

Premier League football resumed today after a short period of rest over the Christmas period. 6 matches were played on an action-packed St. Stephen’s/Boxing day. Here’s how they played out.

LEICESTER CITY vs. MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United travelled to the King Power Stadium in today’s early kick off. Much was at stake with the teams sitting 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for Manchester United in the 23rd minute to give his side the lead. That goal would have come as a relief to Rashford, having missed a sitter earlier in the match. He was played through by a Bruno Fernandes touch before finishing expertly into the bottom corner while one on one with Kasper Schmeichel.

The lead wasn’t to last long though. Leicester struck back in the 31st minute with Harvey Barnes providing the equaliser. He was given the ball after Manchester United lost the ball in their own half before driving towards goal and unleashing a powerful shot into the corner from just outside the box. Bruno Fernandes was partly to blame for the goal. The Portuguese international was closed down inside the Manchester United half which led to the turnover.

Manchester United were arguably the better side in the second half having created more chances than their opposition. Their pressure finally paid off in the 79th minute. This time Fernandes turned from provider to finisher as he slotted past Schmeichel in the box. Substitute Edinson Cavani played a key part in the goal as he carried the ball under pressure and timing his pass into Fernandes to perfection.

United are no slouches when it comes to goalscoring but their defensive frailties have been exposed one too many times this season. Leicester didn’t create too much in the second half but all they needed was one chance. That’s all they needed as they equalised again in the 85th minute. Ayoze Perez pulled back a brilliant low cross to Jamie Vardy who scored – or at least thought he did – with a low finish. Unfortunately for him, and unfortunately for Axel Tuanzebe, the goal was credited as an own goal after coming off the Manchester United defender.

The match finished 2-2 as both teams failed to pick up what could have been a vital 3 points. Liverpool fans would have been satisfied with the scoreline as neither team could close the gap on the title challengers.

FULHAM vs. SOUTHAMPTON

Fulham started the season poorly but have showed steady signs of improvement over the last few weeks. Southampton, on the other hand, have surpassed all expectations so far this season and currently sit in 7th. The two teams faced each other in one of two 3 o’clock kick-offs today.

Shane Long started his first game of the season, but he was unable to influence the game all that much in the first half. In fact, neither team really got going. Only 3 shots were produced in the first 45 minutes, the lowest tally of any Premier League game so far this season.

The second half produced far more entertainment than the first. That said though, the match ended scoreless. That would probably not have been the case in the pre-VAR era.

Shane Long was the first to put the ball in the back of the net but his goal was ruled offside. He was also involved in Southampton’s second disallowed goal. He played through Che Adams who crossed into the feet of Theo Walcott who then applied the finish. The goal looked legitimate but upon inspection from VAR, Che Adams was just offside in the build-up.

Fulham had their fair share of chances in the second half, also. Ivan Cavaleiro had Fulham’s best chance of the game, by far. He was in space as Antonee Robinson’s perfect cross found his head but he was unable to keep his header down. His chance was similar to Marcus Rashford’s sitter in the Manchester United – Leicester game.

The match finished 0-0 at Craven Cottage. Neither teams could complain too much, both were evenly matched throughout.

ASTON VILLA vs. CRYSTAL PALACE

Aston Villa faced Crystal Palace in the other 3 o’clock kick-off. Aston Villa have been one of the surprise packages of the season so far. Their early season form was particularly impressive, they’ve dipped slightly since but still remain in the top half of the league.

Jack Grealish has been the talk of the town in recent weeks but it was Bertrand Traore who opened the scoring for Aston Villa. He got on the end of a rebound in the 5th minute to make it 1-0 to Villa.

Crystal Palace had a potential penalty shout in the 23rd minute after a Matty Cash challenge on van Aanholt. The issue was taken to VAR but after a period of deliberation the decision was no penalty.

Tyrone Mings made life a lot harder for Villa just before half time. The centre back picked up his second yellow of the night to reduce Villa to 10 men going into the second half.

The red card didn’t seem to effect Aston Villa all that much. In fact, they doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Kourtney Hause scored this time from another rebound. This time Ollie Watkins hit the bar from a header and Hause reacted quickest to make it 2-0.

Villa all but wrapped up the game in the 76th minute. Anwar El Ghazi stepped up to the plate this time with a scorcher from Anwar El Ghazi. He took a first time shot which hit the far post and went into the net.

The match finished 3-0 to Aston Villa. The Villains currently sit 6th in the table, but could move up to as far as 2nd with their game in hand.

ARSENAL vs. CHELSEA

Arsenal took on Chelsea at 5:30 in a vital London derby at both ends of the table. Mikel Arteta in particular needed a win to ease the ever-increasing pressure on his shoulders. Arsenal won just 1 game in their previous 10 Premier League games leaving the Gunners in 15th. Chelsea, on the other hand, needed a win to pressurize Liverpool at the top of the table. A loss for Chelsea would leave them 9 points behind the leaders, depending on the Liverpool result tomorrow.

Arsenal started the game better than Chelsea before fading for a period. They did, however, contain Chelsea, not allowing any big chances to be created. Rob Holding in particular was impressive during that period, marshalling Timo Werner time and time again.

Their defensive quality paid off in the 35th minute when Kieran Tierney was fouled in the box leading to an Arsenal penalty. Alexandre Lacazette stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake from the spot to give Arsenal an unexpected lead.

That goal gave Arsenal a newfound confidence. They began to control the game and looked more dangerous in the final third than they have been in recent months.

They doubled their lead just before half time from another dead ball situation. Bukayo Saka won a free kick from well outside the box. Granit Xhaka stepped up to take and the distance of the free kick was no problem for him as he rifled the ball into the top corner.

Arsenal held a shock – but deserved – 2-0 lead going into half time. Frank Lampard, clearly not happy with his team’s performance, brought on Callum Hudson-Odoi and Jorginho for the second half.

Chelsea’s substitutions did nothing to disrupt Arsenal’s momentum. In fact, Arsenal were arguably better in the second half.

They made it 3-0 in the 56th minute through Bukayo Saka. Although *probably* intended as a cross, Saka lofted the ball over Mendy into the Chelsea goal from an acute angle. He deserved a goal for his performance on the night, whether it was deliberate or not.

Chelsea got a goal through Tammy Abraham in the 85th minute to give them the slightest bit of hope. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but after deliberation from VAR the goal was deemed to be legitimate.

Chelsea were given a chance to make it 3-2 in the 90th minute as Pablo Mari gave away a penalty. Jorginho, normally so reliable from the penalty spot, stepped up to take it. Bernd Leno had other ideas as he saved from an unusually weak Jorginho penalty to relieve the increasing pressure.

Arsenal’s defence stood firm thereafter as the match finished 3-1 to the Gunners. The win was much needed, particularly from Mikel Arteta. This evening’s result could be the catalyst to a much-needed winning run for Arsenal.

SHEFFIELD UNITED vs. EVERTON

Sheffield United had picked up just 2 points all season, meaning a win is much needed at this stage of the year. They took on high flying Everton in one of two late kick-offs. Contrastingly, Everton have enjoyed a fantastic start to the season finding themselves in 4th prior to the match.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the best chance in a lacklustre first half. He brilliantly controlled Michael Keane’s long pass before taking the shot on the volley which went just wide of the post. It would have been one of the goals of the season had it gone in.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first half. Both teams struggled to create opportunities with the final ball being especially poor.

It took until the 79th minute for either team to get a shot and target. Unfortunately for the struggling Sheffield United, that shot resulted in an Everton goal. Gylfi Sigurdsson finished accurately into the bottom corner after some neat interplay in the box involving Bernard and Doucoure.

The match finished 1-0 to Everton in a match of few chances. Sheffield United’s winless run continues as they sit bottom of the league while Everton move up to 2nd, just behind their rivals Liverpool.

MANCHESTER CITY vs. NEWCASTLE

The odds were firmly stacked against Newcastle as they took on a Manchester City team stacked with quality, despite a less than impressive start to the season. Newcastle’s confidence would have also taken a hit on Tuesday given their elimination from the EFL Cup at the hands of Brentford.

City, as expected, opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Raheem Sterling should receive huge credit for the goal as he evaded a number of defenders in the box before squaring to Ilkay Gundogan who applied the finishing touches.

Manchester City largely controlled much of the remainder of the half after the goal. Kevin De Bruyne had a great chance to make it 2-0 after a Man City break but his shot from close range was saved well by Karl Darlow.

Newcastle still had reason to believe going into the second half with the scoreline at 1-0. City were far from their best, despite controlling much of the half.

That hope quickly faded away, though, as City made it 2-0. Ferran Torres tapped it in from close range after Fernandez’s block/clearance fell straight to his feet. Joao Cancelo did brilliantly in the build up to create the goalscoring opportunity.

Raheem Sterling, although a very capable goalscorer, is inclined to miss the odd sitter. He had a nearly unmissable chance to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute but he failed to hit the back of the net. He blocked his own shot as his standing leg got in the way of a certain goal. Bernardo Silva had another good chance from the follow up but he was also unable to apply the finish.

Manchester City enjoyed near total domination in the second half and always looked good value for the win. The match finished 2-0 to City who move up to 5th following the victory.

Franco De Port wins Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown

Jockey Bryan Cooper claimed the opening Grade 1 of Leopardstown Christmas Festival 2020 with the victory of Franco De Port today.

On the opening day at the South Co. Dublin track, Cooper secured the Grade 1 Racing Post Novice Chase on the Willie Mullins-trained 8/1 shot.

Last year’s Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runner-up Darver Star was second, four and a half lengths back. Felix Desjy (15/8f) was well-beaten back in third place.

Franco de Port was a record seventh winner in the race for the Closutton trainer.

The winner was the second part of a day 1 double for Mullins who earlier won the Holden Plant Rentals Novice Handicap Hurdle with Dysart Diamond (16/1).

The Aga Khan-bred Zanahiyr (1/2f) completed a hat-trick of wins when taking the Grade Two Knight Frank Juvenile Hurdle. The three-year-old quickened away from the opposition in the closing straight under Jack Kennedy.

Gordon Elliott and Jack Kennedy earlier combined to land the 2m Thorntons Recycling Maiden Hurdle with Wide Receiver (3/1).

Get My Drift (9/2) took the Join Tote.ie With a 10 Euro Risk Free Bet Maiden Hurdle for jockey Jody McGarvey and trainer Mouse Morris.

Uisce Beatha (40/1) stayed on late for his new trainer PĂĄdraig Roche when taking the Bet Through The Free Racing Post App Handicap Hurdle under rider Simon Torrens.

The closing Holden Plant Rentals Flat Race went the way of Noel Meade under jockey Pat Taaffe.

Tomorrow’s racing on Paddy Power Day features two Grade 1 races and the Grade B Paddy Power Chase.

Munster v Leinster Postponed

The game was due to take place on Saturday, December 26 in Limerick, however, Leinster Rugby are currently investigating the outcomes of some of the results from their latest round of Covid-19 PRC testing. Results of these investigations will not be returned in time to meet guidelines set by public health authorities in order for the game go ahead as planned.

Having considered this, the PRO14 Rugby Medical Advisory Group has agreed that this fixture cannot go ahead as scheduled.

PRO14 Rugby will examine potential dates in early 2021 to reschedule the game.

Arsenal’s winless run continues with loss to Manchester City

Arsenal’s last win came against Dundalk in the Europa League.

Mikel Arteta has come under scrutiny this season for his side’s domestic form which has seen Arsenal drop to 15th in the Premier League table. Losses against Burnley, Everton and Wolves in recent weeks have contributed to their position in the table.

His side took on Manchester City tonight in a crucial Carabao Cup quarter-final. The occasion was all the more significant given recent suggestion that Mikel Arteta’s job could be on the line.

Arteta opted to rest several key players, perhaps with the hectic Christmas schedule in mind. Pep Guardiola, on the other hand, played a near full strength XI – making Arteta’s job all the more difficult. Pep’s decision paid dividend as his side ran out comfortable 4-1 winners, thus increasing the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s shoulders.

FIRST HALF

City didn’t take long to strike, either. Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring just 2 minutes into the game. In truth, the goal could have easily been prevented. Poor anticipation from the Arsenal defenders and goalkeeper Alex RĂșnarsson gifted Jesus a tap in from a Oleksandr Zinchenko cross.

The return of Gabriel Martinelli has provided much needed hope for Arsenal fans. The young Brazilian has been out injured since June, missing a host of games in the process. He marked his first start since injury with an assist in the 32nd minute for Alexandre Lacazette. Martinelli looped a great cross into the box which was then finished off by the head of the Frenchman for the equalizing goal.

Gabriel Jesus had a great chance to put City back into the lead in the 40th minute but he was kept out brilliantly by the Arsenal keeper. The Brazilian was played in after a neat one-two with Phil Foden but RĂșnarsson came out on top in the one on one.

The first half ended 1-1 despite Manchester City dominating in terms of possession. Arsenal would have been happy with their first half display despite not creating many chances.

SECOND HALF

Manchester City retook the lead in the 54th movie, owing again to a mistake from the Arsenal keeper. Mahrez lined up a free kick at the edge of area and his shot went straight at RĂșnarsson but to his misfortune the ball slipped through his hands and into the net.

Phil Foden increased City’s advantage just minutes later with a delicate chip over the keeper. Fernandinho did well in the build-up before playing through Foden who put the finishing touches on the move. The England international has now scored 2 goals from as many games in the Carabao Cup having scored against Bournemouth earlier in the campaign.

Foden was involved again as City got their 4th in the 72nd minute. He floated an accurate ball into the box which was met by the head of Aymeric Laporte who couldn’t miss from close range.

The scoring stopped there as Manchester City advanced to the semi-finals. Their opponents are yet to be revealed with further games to be played.

Robbie Brady marks 150th Premier League appearance with a win

The Irish international started as Burnley won 2-1.

Robbie Brady has found himself in and out of the Burnley side the past few years – owing mainly to injury issues. Recently, though, he has re-established himself as a key member of his team. He made his 150th Premier League appearance tonight, helping his side to a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Burnley opened the scoring on the night. Ashley Barnes was the goalscorer after a drab 35 minutes. He rose highest against two Wolves defenders after a looping Charlie Taylor cross before heading into the back of the net. It was the Burnley striker’s first goal in over a year.

The first half ended 1-0 to Burnley after an unmemorable 45 minutes.

Burnley got their second in the 51st minute using their specialized direct brand of football. Chris Wood hammered in from close range after a scuffle in the box. Robbie Brady was involved in the build up to the goal, it was his deep free kick that caused problems for Wolves in the first place.

As luck would have it, Robbie Brady was forced off due to injury in the 68th minute. The severity of the injury is yet to be assessed but signs suggest it’s only minor. He was replaced by Erik Pieters.

Wolves had a chance to half the deficit when they were awarded a penalty after some good work by record signing Fabio Silva. The aforementioned Silva stepped up to take the resulting penalty and he made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1.

Wolves were given a lifeline with Fabio Silva’s goal but they failed to create any further chances of real quality. The match finished 2-1 to Burnley, thus moving the club out of the relegation zone.

Galway clinch Eirgrid u20 football title

Eirgrid All-Ireland u20 Football Final

Saturday 19th December, Croke Park, Dublin

Galway 1-11 Dublin 0-13

Galway are this year’s Eirgrid u20 champions. Crucial scores either side of half time saw them build up a lead that they wouldn’t relinquish. They were, however, forced to hold on in the final few minutes to see off a dogged Dublin side. The Tribesmen enjoyed the majority of possession but failed to convert territory into scores especially during the first half.

Donal Ó Fatharta’s side gained a measure of revenge for last year’s semi-final defeat to a Dublin side that contained five of the team that lost last year final at this grade to Cork. Both sides got their seasons underway on the 8th February and had numerous disruptions to their respective campaigns.

Dublin overcame Tyrone, while Galway defeated Kerry back in October to reach the 2020 decider. Both squads can be proud of their performances on a heavy December Croke Park sod.

The sides were evenly matched at the first water break with the scores tied at 0-4 apiece. A brace from both Tomo Culhane and Matthew Tierney accounted for the Galway scores. While Ciaran Archer, Lee Gannon, Mark Lavin and Brian O’Leary were on target for the Dubs.

Galway upped it a gear on the resumption and gained the momentum in the match. They outscored Dublin 0-4 v 0-1 in the run-up to the interval and took a 0-8 v 0-5 lead into the break. Tierney and Culhane added to their earlier efforts, while Matthew Cooley of Corofin also sent over a fine point. Luke Swan mustered up Dublin’s only score of the second quarter.

Half-time: Galway 0-08 Dublin 0-05

On the restart, Tomo Culhane added another point to his tally and Brian O’Leary responded for the Dubs. The games only goal came after a fine burst from Matthew Tierney ended with a neat hand pass across goal to Culhane. The Salthill forward drilled home a low shot which took a deflection off a Dublin defender and flew past Josh O’Neill in the Dublin goal.

That score gave Galway a six-point lead, 1-09 to 0-6. At this stage, it looks like the Tribesmen might cruise to an easy victory. However, Tom Gray’s men showed their mettle to claw their way back into the match. Three points on the spin from Mark Lavin, Lorcan O’Dell and Adam Fearon saw Dublin close the gap to three points prior to the second water break.

The final quarter of the game saw Dublin continue to eat into the Galway lead. Lavin and O’Dell cut the gap to the minimum before Mattew Tierney sent over a free from distance to send Galway into injury time with a two-point lead. Adam Fearon reduced the arrears again as Dublin pushed for a late equaliser. Galway survived a late scare when Josh Bannon was somewhat over-theatrical in falling to the floor under Galway pressure. Referee Paul Faloon waved away Dublin appeals and Galway clung on for a hard-fought win.

Full-time: Galway 1-11 Dublin 0-13

Teams:

Team news for Eirgrid u20 All-Ireland final

Liverpool put 7 past Crystal Palace to extend their lead at the top

Minamino, Mane, Henderson, Salah and Firmino scored in a 7-0 victory.

Crystal Palace have surpassed expectations by some margin so far this season. This afternoon, though, they faced their biggest challenge yet as they took on in-form Liverpool.

Liverpool looked to stretch their lead at the top of table after their impressive victory against fellow title chasers Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. They did just that as they ran out 7-0 winners. They’re now 6 points ahead at their nearest competitors – albeit Spurs have a game in hand.

Takumi Minamino was given an unfamiliar role as a starter, taking the place of Mohamed Salah. His place on the bench likely comes as a decision to rest the Egyptian, however reports have also emerged that Salah may be unsettled at the club. He revealed in an interview to AS that his future may not lie at Liverpool. He also expressed he was disappointed not to be made captain against Midtjylland, leading to questions about his happiness at the club.

FIRST HALF

Nevertheless, it didn’t take long for his replacement to open the scoring. Takumi Minamino hit the net in just the 2nd minute to score his first Premier League goal for the club. The Japanese international set himself up with a good touch before smashing the ball into the bottom corner, leaving no chance for Vicente Guaita.

After that, Crystal Palace had a number of decent opportunities to draw level but they failed to take their chances. Their wastefulness would eventually cost them as Liverpool extended their lead in the 35th minute through Sadio Mane. He made it 2-0 as he produced an excellent touch at the edge of the area before rifling the ball into the back of the net.

They scored their 3rd goal just before the break, this time Roberto Firmino was the scorer. Andy Robertson whipped an accurate early cross into the feet of the Brazilian before he calmly slotted past the Palace keeper.

The first half ended 3-0 to the frustration of Crystal Palace who may have felt the scoreline – at that stage – flattered Liverpool.

After a fairly even first half – despite the scoreline – Liverpool began to dominate in the second. They controlled much of the possession and shut out Palace as they had failed to do on occasion earlier in the match.

SECOND HALF

Captain Jordan Henderson made it 4-0 with a lovely goal from the edge of the area. He accurately placed the ball into the left-hand corner to effectively end Crystal Palace’s hope of a comeback.

Roberto Firmino got his 2nd in the 68th minute after a lovely Liverpool counter attack. Firmino was played in before he took the ball past James McArthur and lobbed over Guaita into the net. Another brilliant goal by Liverpool.

Firmino didn’t get the chance to complete his hat trick as he was subbed off in the 75th minute for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He should, however, be very pleased with his performance on the day.

The Brazilian has been criticized by some in recent months for his performances. Today, though, he proved he’s just as valuable to this Liverpool team as he’s ever been.

Mohamed Salah was brought on for Sadio Mane around the 60-minute mark and he added to the scoreline in the 80th minute. The goal came from a set piece this time. Trent Alexander-Arnold swung in a deep corner which was met by the head of Joel Matip before Mohamed Salah reacted quickest to guide the ball into the net.

Mohammed Salah got his brace just minutes after. This time it was an unbelievable strike from just outside the area. He hammered the ball into the top corner from 20 yards to complete the rout.

Thankfully for Palace, the scoring stopped after that. The final score was 7-0 to Liverpool in a disappointing afternoon for Crystal Palace. Jurgen Klopp can have no complaints after today’s performance.

Robert Lewandowski crowned Best Men’s Player by FIFA

The Bayern Munich and Poland striker beat Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.

Robert Lewandowski has been awarded Best Men’s Player of the Year by FIFA, beating Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the process.

The striker enjoyed an unprecedented year, winning a host of team and individual awards including; the UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga and Bundesliga Player of the Season. His performances over the past year meant he was favourite to win the award and rightly so.

He scored 34 goals in 31 Bundesliga games last season and has continued his form into this season, netting 15 times in just 11 games.

Footballers tend to decline into their 30’s but Lewandowski has shown no sign of slowing down. In fact, you could argue he’s only getting better. He’s in better shape than ever and his progress off the pitch is bearing results for his club and country. Much credit should go to Bayern Munich whose strength and conditioning programme has physically transformed several of their players.

The next step for Lewandowski is to enter 2021 in the same vain as he started and finished 2020. He will no doubt have his eyes on the 2021 Ballon d’Or, an award his missed out on this year due to cancellation owing to Covid-19.
