O’Brien to run six in English Derby

Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand of six horses that will run in the Investec English Derby on Saturday at Epsom. The race will see 16 horses for the right to win one of biggest races in flat racing.

Ed Walker will have the favourite (English King). He won at Lingfield Derby Trial and will be the mount of Frankie Dettori. The Italian jockey will be looking for his third Derby win having won aboard Authotized in 2007 and Golden Horn in 2015.

Aidan O’Brien runs six in the race and will pose a significant threat to the market principles. The Wexford man is looking for his 8th Derby success. He had 7 entries but Armory was removed for the list of entries. Russian Emperor is O’Brien’s best chance, at least according to the odds. Mogul also runs here who finished fourth in the King Edward Stakes. Irish 2,000 Guineas Runner Up Vatican City has also strong credentials. Amhran na Bhfiann, Serpentine and Mythical are complete the hopefuls from the Ballydoyle yard.

William Muir has Pyledriver running who won the King Edward VII Stakes, albeit surprisingly. Mohican Heights also runs for the David Simcock yard. Paul Cole has a runner in the race with Khalifa Sat. Jessie Harrington has Golden Maze in the race, with Hugo Palmer running Emissary, Ralph Beckett running Max Vega and John Gosden with Worthily.

The Oaks will see a field of eight go to post. Aidan O’Brien runs three in the race with Love, Passion and Ennistymon. John Gosden runs Frankly Darling, whom is a daughter of the great Frankel. Her trainer Mr John Gosden is looking for his fourth win in 7 seasons in the oaks. Tiempo Vuela also runs for yard. Roger Varian has two runners in the race with Queen Daenerys and Gold Wand.

It’s promises to be an exciting weekend for sure.

The Investec Derby, Donn McClean Makes an Assessment

As Donn McClean prepares for the Investec Derby, he makes a critical assessment of the Irish team and is looking outside the six members from Ballydoyle to find a good selection. Blackbook.com.au reports on his progress.

Any conversation about the Investec Derby has to start with Aiden O’Brien, he has sent out six Derby winners so far and therefore is not a person to be ignored. This is just one short of the all-time record. He is also responsible for seven of the thirteen horses in the line-up this year, so the chances are high that he can get another winner.

Once you have cracked who is going to be the best of that bunch, then you are well on your way to finding your Derby winner. But it is never that easy, with so many good horses in the running you have to be careful. Take High Chaparral, for example. He had a more significant price than Hawk Wing, and Ruler of the World out prices Battle Of Marengo. Sir Dragonet is a horse that sits at a shorter price than all twelve of the other horses including his six stablemates, and he had an impressive run in the Chester Vase last time out. A race that has seen a number of Derby winners do well at, including Ruler of the World as mentioned above and harking back to the eighties both Shergar and Henbit did well at the race before going on to win the Derby.

Sir Dragonet maybe the lesser fancied horse of the two colts that are running from the Ballydoyle stable, but there is total confidence in the way he runs in a relaxed manner, and in the Chester Vase, his jockey Donnacha O’Brien had such confidence in him that he knew he was going to be the winner before he attained his eight lengths lead to make it an easy victory in an impressive performance.

He isn’t always known for being on the short odds, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will give a bad performance. Back in his debut in Tipperary in April, while running a twelve-furlong maiden his odds were out at 14/1, but that didn’t stop him giving an impressive performance over more fancied stablemates.

He class is obviously what is surprising, and despite the fact that he has ridden in just two races so far, the performances have been impressive. Alongside the fact that he is being ridden by Ryan Moore, then it is no wonder he is the clear favourite going into the race. But he is short, and for that reason, he may be beaten. And Madhmoon is one horse that could do it. He is a top-class juvenile horse that has put in some good performances, in particular at the one-mile maiden at Leopardstown in his debut. He stepped it up from there performing in the Group 2 KPMG Champions Juvenile Stakes at the same course back in September during the Irish Champions Weekend.

Africa Cup of Nations to be played in 2022

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will now be played in 2022 BBC Sport report. They report that the tournament has been postponed until January 2022 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as a result of Covid 19. The women’s version of the competition has been cancelled.

The men’s tournament was due to take place in January 2021. However, the way things have gone and the the way the virus is spreading across it is probably a wise decision. The African Nations Championship which should have took place in April of this year will now be played in January 2021. CAF President Ahmad Ahmad said, “Health is our number one priority. We must remain vigilant,”.

Incidentally, the tournament move now means it will take place in 2022 the same year as the World Cup. It is not the first time this happened though as it was the same in 2010. The move in fact will benefit Premier League, especially Liverpool who will have both strikers next season Sadio Mane and Mo Salah. The duo will now not miss games. Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr speaking to BBC Sport Africa said, “I think this is a wise decision because time is very short now and they could not postpone to the summer,”.

Mr Rohr continued, “I can understand this decision – we have more time now to prepare our young boys. It is not all bad”. He said, “There is a positive side in all this and we have time for some friendlies and also for the beginning of the World Cup qualifiers – normally we will begin in November with this, and I think we can follow the plan and still have time to the Afcon qualifiers starting in October, so it is a wise decision and it will be a big year in 2022.”

The 2022 tournament will remain in Cameroon where it was scheduled to be next year.

Wigan Athletic go into administration

English Championship side Wigan Athletic have gone into administration according to BBC Sport. In doing so, they are first side to do so since the coronavirus pandemic began.

It is now expected Wigan will be deducted 12 points. However, the sanction will not be applied until the end of the season if the side nicknamed the Latics finish outside the bottom three after the 46 games regular season. Wigan currently sit in 14th place in the championship table. If Wigan do finish in the bottom then the 12 points deduction will be applied in the 2020/21 season.

In fairness since the resumption of games Wigan have won all three of their games. The team are coached by former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook. Since retiring from playing in 2006 he has also managed Portsmouth, Southport, Accrington and Chesterfield to name but a few. Cook’s side had a super 3-0 win over Stoke at the DW Stadium on Tuesday, which puts them 8 points clear of the drop zone.

The club was owned by Dave Whelan up until 2018. However, he sold to Hong Kong based International Entertainment Corporation. There was then a further change of ownership in June with Next Leader Fund taking control. BBC Sport state that the administrators will be Gerald Krasner, Paul Stanley and Dean Watson of Begbies Traynor. Paul Stanley told BBC Sport, “We understand that everybody connected with the club and the wider football world is seeking clarity on the future of Wigan Athletic”. “That’s exactly what we are seeking to provide as we move through this process and we seek out interested parties to rescue this famous old club here in the region.

Mr Stanley said that the pandemic has “obviously had a significant of recent fortunes of the club”. He also said that anyone interested in buying the club should contact the administrators directly.

World Rugby Sevens Series Cancelled

The World Rugby Seven Series has been cancelled with the New Zealand men and women’ teams awarded the World Seven’s titles. The season was cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

RTE Sport report that tournaments in Singapore, London, Paris and Hong Kong were all cancelled on the men’s sevens tour. The tournaments in the USA, Paris and Hong Kong were suspended in the women’s equivalent. As a consequence the Ireland sevens team have finished 10th overall, while the women’s side have also finished 10th overall. It was the first time Anthony Eddy’s side competed in the tournament having came 6th in the Cape town tour, 6th in the LA tour and 7th in Sydney earlier in the year.

Bill Beaumont the chairman of World Rugby confirmed the news on Tuesday. He said, “While it is very disappointing for players, fans, organisers and everyone involved … the health and wellbeing of the rugby community and wider society remains the number one priority,”. He continued, “These difficult decisions have been taken following detailed consultation with our union partners and in line with advice from the various government and public health agencies around the world.”

It is a 13th sevens title for the New Zealand men’s side. They won three of the six rounds that were completed before Covid 19. South Africa finished 11 points back , while Fiji finished third. The women’s side won 4 rounds from 5. They were well on the way to a sixth title in 8 years before Covid 19 put a stop to it.

In terms of the Challenger tournament, no finals will be played. World Rugby said there will also be no promotion and or relegation from the top tiers. World Rugby said, “As a result of these amendments, seedings for the Tokyo Olympic Games will be adapted to include results from the 2021 Series to ensure they provide the most robust and accurate representation of current form,”

Roscommon hurling manager steps down

Roscommon GAA have announced that senior hurling manager Ciaran Comerford has stepped down from his position.

The former Laois and Borris-Kilcotton player was appointed Roscommon boss in November 2017 and has been popular with supporters and players alike in the county. Ciaran was in the final year of the agreed deal, but has now decided that the time was right to move to pastures new rather than complete the season when action and inter-county training resume in September.

Chairman of the Roscommon County Hurling Board, Christy McDermott, said in a statement, “I’d like to thank Ciarán for his efforts over the past two and half years with the Roscommon team. I fully respect the decision he has made, as the Christy Ring Competition will not now commence until much later in the year”. Mr McDermott acknowledged all the work Comerford put into his role and said

“We had some good days including our winning of the Division 3 A National League last year. For those, we thank you Ciarán”.

Roscommon have said they hope to have a manager in place by the end of July. A recruitment process for the job will start in the coming days.

English FA to make 124 staff redundant

The English FA is to make 124 staff redundant due to financial impact of Covid 19. RTE Sport report the lack of revenue from international and domestic games has hit the FA very hard. In fact reports suggest they lost over £300 million.

The Chief Executive of the FA, Mark Bullingham, has said, “As a not-for-profit organisation, this will hit us hard”. He continued, “Therefore, over recent months, we have forensically analysed the budget of every division within the FA in order to identify the most suitable areas to make costs savings”.

Bullingham stated the situation has “worsened” and a reduction in the FA numbers will need to be done in order to deal with the financial impact of the crisis. Mr Bullingham continued, “It might seem that football has weathered the storm by getting the top flight men’s game playing again”. He said, “However, unfortunately the past few months have impacted the FA severely and we have lost a significant amount of money that we can never recoup. “We also anticipate that many of our future revenue streams will be affected for a considerable time.” Bullingham said the next few weeks will be “difficult” for the FA.

“The next few weeks will be very tough for everyone at the FA and our aim is to ensure that we emerge in the strongest possible state and be ready for better times in the future.”

It certainly bad times when people are losing their jobs due to the virus. But personally I can see this happening at a lot of club around England in the coming weeks and months as well .Only time will tell how long this virus will last.

Aidan O’Brien discusses his Epsom plans

Santiago, winner of yesterday’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, has not been fully ruled out an attempt at a Derby double according to his trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Though the Ballydoyle handler had initially suggested Santiago could go next for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster, speaking to Nick Luck on Racing TV this morning, O’Brien suggested he could instead turn out in the Investec Derby at Epsom next Saturday.

The 14-times winning trainer of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby said:

“It’s very possible (those that ran in Irish Derby could run at Epsom). I spoke to John (Magnier), Michael (Tabor) and Derrick (Smith), the entries are made on Monday so we’ll see what everybody thinks today and tomorrow whether they decide to make an entry or not.”

O’Brien continued:

“We’ll see what they want to do, but it’s not impossible. We’ll see what other horses are going to Epsom. It was unconventional to run them so soon after Ascot, but they came out of the race well and that is why they ran. Nothing is definitely ruled out.”

The Ballydoyle handler also said that Mythical and Amhrán na Bhfiann were in contention for Epsom, along with Russian Emperor, Mogul and Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas second Vatican City. Armory was also mentioned as a possible runner in either the Epsom Derby or the French equivalent.

In discussing possible runners in the Investec Oaks, Aidan O’Brien said that both Qipco 1000 Guineas winner Love and Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas victor Peaceful were both currently being aimed at Epsom, but both may not partake in the Epsom Group 1. He stated that both Ennistymon and Passion, second and third in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, are also possibilities.

Recap:UFC Fight Night Las Vegas

Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker went the distance in their UFC fight at Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Poirier started the fight rather slow but Hooker took control in the opening few rounds. However, Poirier turned the fight around to turn the fight in his way. Poirier record now stands at 26-6, while Hooker is 20-9. Mike Perry was also in action on the night with his girlfriend the only person in his corner. He out pointed Mickey Gall to win his 14th fight.

Speaking after the fight Poirier said, “I could have been a little bit sharper,” “I didn’t get out of the way of a few shots. It’s not that I disrespected Dan’s power, but I stayed in the pocket too long. I landed a couple of good ones that were making his head snap back and I thought I was maybe stealing the rounds but I could do better than that.”

In other fights, Maurice Green overcame Gian Villante. Green won by submission via arm triangle in Round 3. Brendan Allen beat Kyle Daukaus via unanimous decision on points, 29-28, 29-27, 30-27.
