Stormers gear up for Connacht challenge in URC semi-final

The DHL Stormers are preparing to face off against Connacht in the upcoming BKT URC home semi-final at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. While the Stormers were pleased to secure a home game thanks to Connacht’s upset victory over Ulster, they won’t be taking their opponents lightly.

DHL Stormers’ impressive home record

The DHL Stormers have established a formidable record at the DHL Stadium, with 19 successive wins. The team has also won two matches in Stellenbosch and took a home match to Gqeberha, winning all three matches. In the history of the BKT URC, they have lost just eight times in 40 matches.

Respect for Connacht

Despite their success, the DHL Stormers remain wary of Connacht’s dogged spirit. The Irish side has consistently punched above their weight and has shown their ability to take on the bigger teams. DHL Stormers head coach John Dobson has emphasized the need for respect towards their opponents, acknowledging their culture and team ethos.

“They are tough opposition. With respect to Connacht, a team that has crossed the equator is more preferable opposition rather than somebody flying down from up country or Durban,” said Dobson.

“We can feel confident, but that confidence must not be interpreted as arrogance. We have massive respect for the culture and team ethos of Connacht. They fight, and their attack shape is really good. The way they took Ulster apart at the breakdown was good.

“Like Seabelo (Senatla) always says, ‘we got dog’; they have that ‘dog’ in them. Connacht is a great story, to do what they are doing with the smallest budget. They are a team that does not go away, and Ulster experienced that, as have other teams. They have a helluva lot of mongrel in them.”

DHL Stormers’ preparation

DHL Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman has highlighted that the hosts are preparing for a heavyweight arm-wrestle against Connacht. The team is expecting a tough match against quality opposition. Snyman also acknowledged Connacht’s fighting spirit, noting that they fight for everything on the field.

“They are a tough team, we realised that when we played them in Galway last year. They are a quality side, well-coached and they have experienced players in the Irish setup.

“Connacht are a team we won’t take lightly. That game in the first round was tight until the red card and they still came back. They fight for everything. They fight for every ball, every ruck and you can see they’re playing for each other on the field.

“That makes them quite a threat, but we’ve got our own character and we’re a strong team.” Whatever the result, both teams will know they have been in a dog fight.

Conclusion

Both teams are preparing for a challenging match, and the outcome is likely to be a closely fought dog fight. While the DHL Stormers hold the advantage of playing on home soil, Connacht’s determined spirit and ability to punch above their weight make them a formidable opponent but bookies expect  Stormers to win by 15pts.

Virgin Media TV release statement regarding ownership and rights deal for GAAGO

Virgin Media TV release statement regarding ownership and rights deal for GAAGO

On Monday’s episode of RTÉ One’s Upfront current affairs program, hosted by Katie Hannon, former GAA President Liam O’Neill voiced his concerns over the paywalling of GAA sports onto the GAAGO platform. GAAGO is a joint venture between RTÉ and the GAA.

Reasons for Putting Games Behind Paywall

According to Mr. O’Neill, the GAA made the decision to put the games behind a paywall in the best interest of the sport and at the time, TV3, a broadcaster that had covered GAA games, was going out of business. With only one station covering the games, the GAA decided to explore other options.

Clarification from Virgin Media Television

Virgin Media Television (VMTV), which purchased TV3 in July 2015 and rebranded it as Virgin Media Television in June 2018, has asked for a clarification from Mr. O’Neill. VMTV asserts that TV3 did not go out of business, but was instead purchased by Virgin Media and continues to be the leading independent, commercial public service broadcaster in Ireland.

Lack of Clarity over RTÉ’s Stake in GAAGO

The fact that RTÉ is a 50% shareholder in GAAGO has not been clarified in any editorial discussion about the decision to show key games on pay-per-view television only. This raises questions about whether RTE paid anything for the rights or simply agreed to keep them behind a paywall to increase revenue for both partners in GAAGO.

Did GAA Approach Other Broadcasters?

When Sky Television declined to renew its GAA rights, the GAA did not approach other broadcasters to see if they were interested in broadcasting the games. Instead, the GAA made the decision to put them behind a paywall.

Impact on License Payers

With RTÉ now having more sports rights than it can show on its channels, the decision to put GAA sports behind a paywall means that license payers must further subsidize RTÉ by paying for GAA Sports content through its joint-venture with the GAA. The question must be asked if this is fair to license payers.

The Greatest Irish Rugby Union Stars Of All Time

Throughout history, there have been a vast array of good Irish rugby union players. But, while many fall into the category of being good, some were a level above and deemed great, while others have been labelled as icons and legends. And for anyone in two minds over who makes the cut, we have a list of the greatest rugby union stars who hail from Ireland below.

Johnny Sexton

We will kick off this list by mentioning a player who is still active, and thats Johnny Sexton. The thirty-seven-year-old, who currently plies his trade for Leinster, is a world-renowned fly half, and when hes on the pitch, its certainly worth checking out the Rugby Union match betting odds. Sexton is in his second spell with Leinster, with a stint at Racing 92 sandwiched in between, and hes racked up over two hundred senior club appearances, over one hundred caps for his country and thousands of points in the process.

Brian ODriscoll

In the eyes of a lot of people, Brian ODriscoll is the greatest ever rugby player to come out of Ireland, and possibly the greatest ever sportsman too. Its quite the tag but one that ODriscoll earned as a professional in a career that spanned sixteen years, in which he only turned out for Leinster at club level. One hundred and eighty-six appearances led to three hundred and eleven points between 1999 and 2014 for the outside centre, and his achievements for Ireland and the British and Irish Lions remain unmatched.

Paul OConnell

Some great Irish rugby players had all the ability in the world, but Paul OConnell had the ability combined with fantastic leadership qualities, which helped him stand out globally for Munster between 2001 and 2015 and Ireland from 2002 to 2015. The lock, who made close to one hundred and eighty appearances for Ireland, was a huge fan favourite and the man that took over the reins when ODriscolls time with his country was over. While hampered by injuries, OConnell goes down in history as one of the greats.

Keith Wood

Were going to wrap up this list with Keith Wood, not only because like the three who went before him are greats, but because he brought a uniqueness to the table. Wood, who starred for Munster and Harlequins between 1999 and 2000, and 2000 and 2003, respectively, was fast and agile, but alongside that, he had an incredibly high work rate. There arent many Irish players named World Rugby Player of the Year, but it was a feat achieved by Wood in 2001, and rightly so.

When you talk about greats, you’re usually talking about players from the past, which is primarily the case with Irish rugby union stars. However, with Sexton still playing, it will be interesting to see in a few years if any other players have made that jump from being good to great

Munster facing injury crisis ahead of Leinster semi-final

Munster squad prepare for URC semi-final against Leinster

The Munster rugby squad has begun its preparations for the upcoming URC semi-final against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday. The team secured its place in the semi-finals with a hard-fought victory over Glasgow Warriors on Saturday night.

Tadhg Beirne fit and ready to play

Tadhg Beirne, who had been nursing an ankle injury, played the full 80 minutes in the game against Glasgow Warriors without any issues. This is good news for Munster fans, as Beirne is a key player for the team.

Peter O’Mahony’s availability in question

Peter O’Mahony injured his elbow during the game against Glasgow Warriors, and he will undergo a scan to determine his availability for the upcoming game against Leinster. His absence could be a significant blow for Munster, as he is one of the team’s most experienced players.

Diarmuid Barron’s availability to be determined

Diarmuid Barron suffered a shoulder injury during the Glasgow Warriors game, and his availability for the upcoming game against Leinster will be determined later in the week. His absence would be another significant blow for Munster.

Several players unavailable due to head injuries

Malakai Fekitoa, Conor Murray, Calvin Nash, and RG Snyman were all removed from the game against Glasgow Warriors due to head injuries and are currently following the return-to-play protocols. As a result, they will all be unavailable for the upcoming game against Leinster.

Several players still rehabilitating

Several Munster players, including Liam O’Connor, Eoin O’Connor, Jack Daly, Paddy Patterson, Keith Earls, Paddy Kelly, Andrew Conway, and Liam Coombes, are still rehabilitating from various injuries and will not be available for the game against Leinster. This leaves Munster with a significantly depleted squad for the upcoming game.

Review and video of highlights of Connacht beating Ulster in URC quarter-final

Match Review, starting teams and video of highlights of Connacht beating Ulster in URC quarter-final

Connacht pulled off a sensational victory over Ulster, qualifying for the semi-finals of the BKT United Rugby Championship. The coaching team, led by Andy Friend, guided the squad to their third victory at the ground in just five years, thanks to their enormous physicality, rock-solid defense, and relentless work at the breakdown.

First Half Domination

Connacht led 9-3 at the break, with Jack Carty converting three penalties. Despite Ulster opening the scoring with a penalty of their own just before the 20th minute mark, Connacht succeeded in keeping the hosts away from any genuine try-scoring opportunities of their own. Shamus Hurley-Langton dominated the first half and the game, winning the Player of the Match award with 18 carries, 16 tackles without a miss, 4 defenders beaten, and 2 turnovers won.

Second Half Struggle

The second half started with Connacht dominating possession and territory, but they were unable to convert opportunities into points. A fourth penalty from Carty stretched the lead to 9, but then began a period of Ulster dominance, with the hosts scoring their first try on 65 minutes. The gap was down to 2 points heading into 75 minutes, but an excellent break from Kieran Marmion brought Connacht deep into the Ulster half, and Carty’s fifth penalty meant Ulster had to go chasing a try in the closing stages.

Jubilant Scenes

The hosts managed to get 5 meters short as the clock went into the red, but replacement Dylan Tierney-Martin popped up with the decisive turnover at the breakdown to seal the win. The squad secured a five-point win, but they could have won by a more significant margin had they been more clinical with their entries into the Ulster 22. The victory has set plans in motion for Connacht to face either the DHL Stormers or Vodacom Bulls for a place in the Grand Final in South Africa, where they’ll have an opportunity to relive that famous day in 2016.

Do Irish sports celebrities play Blackjack?

Sports in Ireland have always been popular and will always be. It’s one of the best ways for people to pass the time as they cheer for their favorite sports teams. Sports themselves have also gained a relationship with gambling. Many people like to place a bet while watching a match to see if they can win some extra money on the side. So it is only natural for some big names in Irish sports to spend some time gambling. It is not out of the question to see some of them sitting down at the blackjack table to try their luck.

Irish sports and gambling

Irish sport has had a long relationship with gambling. While sports such as football and hurling are deeply embedded in Irish culture and history, they have also become intertwined with gambling over the years.

In Ireland, sports betting is legal and regulated, and numerous bookmakers and online betting sites allow people to place bets on sporting events. This has led to a significant amount of money being wagered on sports betting in Ireland. Popular sports such as football, horse racing, and Gaelic games are all betted on.

In particular, horse racing has a long history of association with gambling in Ireland, with many people betting on races both in person and online. The Irish Grand National and the Irish Derby are two of the most popular horse racing events in Ireland, and they attract large crowds of spectators and bettors.

Overall, while Irish sports and gambling are certainly intertwined, it is important to ensure that the integrity of sports is protected and that measures are in place to prevent problem gambling and corruption.

You will spot many Irish sports stars playing gambling games recreationally. There is no shortage of money spent in the casino after a match or before it, either by them or their fans. Slots are very popular as they are quick and easy to do. Just sit down and pull the lever. Another popular choice of game is the ever-present card game Blackjack.

Every casino has at least one table for the game. There is a good reason for it. The game is simple to learn, and there are many strategies to use when playing. Enough to fill entire charts. For a detailed blackjack chart, check this website to see for yourself.

Who’s playing at the tables?

Connor McGregor- One of the most famous Irish people today, if not the most famous. The MMA star has won accolades all over the world and has built his brand around his persona. But between intense matches, he has been spotted going to casinos to play a few blackjack games.

There are many members of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Young players, in particular, are reported to go join players in a casino for a few games. It’s so popular among its members that it’s seen as an integral part of the experience by many of its members. There are fears that many are being exposed to a harmful lifestyle, but the GAA has taken steps to tighten rules and regulations to prevent harm from coming to its members.

Conclusion

The connection between Irish sports and gambling, particularly sports betting, is rather strong. And the big names in the different sports will partake in gambling for their own leisure. It’s reasonable to assume that blackjack is going to be a popular choice because of its ease of learning and depth of strategy.

However, it’s also important to practice safe and responsible play. That’s why you wont see many of them outright advertise what they’re playing.

Why Slingo Bingo is Growing Popular

Developed in the mid 1990s, Slingo bingo was Sal Falciglia’s attempt to amalgamate the best elements of slots and bingo. By taking bingo as the core game, the San Franciscan gaming enthusiast hoped to create something both new and familiar.

Slingo bingo was originally released on AOL, a dial-up internet provider that dominated the early internet age. The game’s simple yet ingenious premise found near instant success, becoming AOL’s most popular title within days.

More than 20 years on, Slingo bingo’s popularity has endured and continues to reach new heights, and here’s why.

Playing Slingo Bingo

Key to Slingo bingo’s success and universal appeal is its simplicity and ease of play. Almost everyone is familiar with bingo and slots as separate entities, and Slingobingo isn’t any harder to grasp.

Although there are plenty of Slingo variations available online, the majority follow the same core structure. There are usually 75 or 90 balls in-play, with numbers presented on a 5×5 grid.

Spinning the slot reel reveals a number that, if matching, can be crossed off a player’s card. Marking five numbers in either a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line will move the player up the reward ladder.

The prizes corresponding to each rung of the ladder vary hugely, and reaching the very top can provide a huge payout.

Many variations also feature Wild, Super Wild and Blocker symbols that add a different dynamic to the game and enhance gameplay.

The Wild symbol allows the player to place a marker on any space on the corresponding reel. The Super Wild is an upgrade, allowing a marker to be placed anywhere.

Finally, Blockers stop any symbol from appearing in a particular place.

Variety

As with the two games that it amalgamates, there is almost endless variety when it comes to Slingo bingo. Slingo Advance, Extreme, Showdown and Riches all have slight variations on the classic formula to cater to different players.

Slingo Advance allows players to hold or discard numbers after a spin, giving the player more control than the solely luck-based original.

Slingo Extreme has a faster pace and is catered towards players seeking the greatest challenge. Fewer spins and more difficult winning patterns make the extreme version decidedly more difficult.

Slingo Showdown is the most competitive variant as it pits players against each other in a similar manner to conventional bingo. Players compete with their own cards, with the winner crowned based on who garners the most points.

Finally, Slingo Riches is for those looking to win big and offers the best potential for returns. Completing a full house within a set number of spins can sometimes return upwards of 20,000x the player’s stake.

Thematic variety is as important and more abundant than the gameplay tweaks just listed. The Deal or No Deal and Britain’s Got Talent Slingo games are hugely popular due to the popularity of their inspirations.

Slingo Racing is another beloved Slingo theme, especially for sport fans. This variation adds a horseracing element into the mix, as the player can bet on a horse prior to starting.

Jackpots

The immense popularity of slots has inevitably resulted in large jackpots, and many versions have great prizes on offer. Sites such as Rainbow Riches Casino also offer free spins to new players on their classic Slingobingo game.

Progressive jackpots are another staple of Slingo that have undoubtedly contributed hugely to Slingo’s growth. Rather than standing at a set figure, these pool players’ stakes and grow based on the amount they’re being played.

These can sometimes reach life changing amounts upwards of seven figures.

Slingo is a Social Game

Another factor that has impacted Slingo bingo’s growth is the social aspect of the game and its multiplayer base. Slingo bingo fosters the same strong social element which is especially present in bingo.

There is a bustling online community that is very welcoming to new players, making it ideal for both new and existing players. Almost every Slingo game has an integrated chat feature that allows players to communicate and interact throughout a game’s duration.

It’s not uncommon for veterans to share tips with their less experienced counterparts and congratulate each other on wins. The chat features also allow Slingo to be played with friends.

Competitiveness is instilled by the fact that people are competing in real time and that there can be only one winner. Leaderboards are common to celebrate the best players and incentivize others to continue improving.

Slingo’s Popularity Will Only Increase

Sal Falciglia’s ingenious combination of slots and bingo is the perfect winning formula. It’s new, yet familiar and mixes two of the world’s most beloved games.

Slingo bingo was an almost instant success, and the digital age has catapulted the game’s popularity to new heights. It’s little surprise that Slingo is a certified internet classic with an ever-growing player base.

Munster Hurling – Cork v Tipperary – Preview, Stats & Team News

Munster Hurling Round Robin Preview: Cork vs Tipperary

As the Munster Hurling Round Robin heats up, Cork and Tipperary will face off in a highly anticipated clash at Semple Stadium on Sunday, May 8th. Tipperary leads the head-to-head record with 41 victories, while Cork has won 39 times. There have been eight draws and one abandoned game. Cork emerged victorious in their last championship meeting in 2022, winning by 12 points.

Recent Form

Both Cork and Tipperary have started their 2023 championship campaigns with victories over Waterford and Clare, respectively. Cork was particularly impressive in their win over Waterford, with Patrick Horgan leading the way with eight points. Tipperary, on the other hand, had a tougher time against Clare but managed to come out on top thanks to Jason Forde’s 2-6 haul.

Top Scorers

Tipperary’s Jason Forde has been in fine form this season, scoring 2-6 in his team’s opening two matches. Jake Morris has also been among the goals, scoring 2-4. For Cork, Patrick Horgan is their top scorer with eight points, all from frees. Darragh Fitzgibbon is their next highest scorer with five points.

Key Matchups

The battle between Tipperary’s full-forward line and Cork’s full-back line could be crucial in determining the outcome of this match. Tipperary’s full-forward trio of Forde, Morris, and Sean Ryan will pose a significant threat to Cork’s defense, which will likely be anchored by Colm Spillane. Cork’s forwards, led by Horgan, will also need to be at their best to break down a Tipperary defense that has conceded just 1-24 in their two matches so far.

This match is likely to be a close affair, with both teams evenly matched on paper. However, Tipperary’s superior firepower upfront could give them the edge over Cork. Expect Tipperary to win a tight contest by two or three points.
