The “relations have broken down” between Horse Racing Ireland and the five racetracks since they rejected the media rights deal

Kilbeggan, Thurles, Limerick, Sligo, and Roscommon racecourses make up the United Irish Racecourses (UIR), and they’ve expressed serious concerns about the planned deal’s unequal allocation of revenue and asked the Minister of Agriculture to step in. Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) proposed a media rights arrangement with broadcaster Racecourse Media Group (RMG) and sports data provider Sports Information Services (SIS) starting today (9 May 2023), but UIR declined to sign it.

Direct-to-home television rights were part of the proposed five-year media rights deal that would have started in 2024 and gone until at least 2029.

HRI named the media company a “preferred partner” that same October. Because of the unfair allocation of media rights funding, UIR—which includes the racetracks in Kilbeggan, Thurles, Limerick, Roscommon, and Sligo—has rejected the arrangement. It is anticipated that HRI will personally benefit to the tune of €7 million from the purchase and that HRI-owned racecourses will earn seven figures as a result.

Due to this assurance and confidence in HRI’s ability to follow through, UIR signed the media rights agreement with RMG | SIS seven years ago. As a result of the deteriorating relationship between UIR and HRI, UIR Secretary Paddy Dunican has written to the Minister of Agriculture asking for help in resolving their issues so that smaller racetracks can earn a fair price for their media rights.

Racecourse owners’ fundamental rights are being threatened, according to the organization, so the Minister should reevaluate Section 10 of the Horse and Greyhound Racing Act 2001.

According to the Horse and Greyhound Racing Act of 2021, HRI is authorized to negotiate on behalf of the industry in matters involving the transmission or relaying of any broadcast, photography, filming, or sound recording of a race fixture or any part thereof for commercial purposes.

This gives the state agency the exclusive power to bargain for the racetracks’ property rights, which may be against the Constitution. Racetracks that want to contest their share of the revenue from media and data rights have no recourse because no appeals process exists.

Despite HRI’s assurances in 2016 that they would investigate the deals’ unequal allocation of funding, action still needs to be taken.

UIR wants what’s best for racing, race fans, and those who place bets with Outplayed accumulator calculator guide, including equality of treatment, increased awareness of racing, and larger crowds. As a result, HRI has more responsibility than usual to secure the best available terms while being open and honest about providing value to all courses fairly and equitably.

Derry Senior Football Manager Responds to Allegations of Domestic Abuse Made by Estranged Wife

Derry Senior football manager, Rory Gallagher, has responded to allegations of domestic abuse made against him by his estranged wife, Nicola Gallagher. Mrs. Gallagher posted a statement on Facebook on May 9, detailing incidents of alleged domestic violence that occurred over two decades.

Nicola Gallagher’s Statement

In her Facebook post, Mrs. Gallagher stated, “Silence isn’t the answer, I tried that, I thought I was protecting my children, the only person I was protecting was him. Please anyone who’s been through this, speak out. Silence nearly killed me.” She also went to detail some of her experiences of abuse, but at this time we cannot publish those details.

Rory Gallagher’s Response

Rory Gallagher has denied the allegations and said that they have been previously investigated and dealt with by the relevant authorities. He also said that his focus over the past four years has been to protect his children from the ongoing turmoil in their family.

Derry GAA’s Statement

Derry GAA was contacted for comment regarding the allegations and asked if they had spoken to Mr. Gallagher and if he would be involved in the upcoming Ulster Final against Armagh. In a short statement, a spokesperson for Derry GAA said: “Derry GAA condemns all forms of domestic violence. We encourage anyone who has experienced domestic violence to report it to the relevant authorities immediately.”

Legal Proceedings and Custody of Children

According to Mr. Gallagher, the couple’s marriage broke down over four years ago and he was granted a full Residence Order in respect of their three young children in February 2023 following long-running court proceedings in Family Courts in both jurisdictions. This outcome was recommended by social services.

Mr. Gallagher has left the matter in the hands of his legal team and requested that the privacy of their family be respected at this time. He has also stated that he will not be making any further public comment on the matter.

Stormers gear up for Connacht challenge in URC semi-final

The DHL Stormers are preparing to face off against Connacht in the upcoming BKT URC home semi-final at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town. While the Stormers were pleased to secure a home game thanks to Connacht’s upset victory over Ulster, they won’t be taking their opponents lightly.

DHL Stormers’ impressive home record

The DHL Stormers have established a formidable record at the DHL Stadium, with 19 successive wins. The team has also won two matches in Stellenbosch and took a home match to Gqeberha, winning all three matches. In the history of the BKT URC, they have lost just eight times in 40 matches.

Respect for Connacht

Despite their success, the DHL Stormers remain wary of Connacht’s dogged spirit. The Irish side has consistently punched above their weight and has shown their ability to take on the bigger teams. DHL Stormers head coach John Dobson has emphasized the need for respect towards their opponents, acknowledging their culture and team ethos.

“They are tough opposition. With respect to Connacht, a team that has crossed the equator is more preferable opposition rather than somebody flying down from up country or Durban,” said Dobson.

“We can feel confident, but that confidence must not be interpreted as arrogance. We have massive respect for the culture and team ethos of Connacht. They fight, and their attack shape is really good. The way they took Ulster apart at the breakdown was good.

“Like Seabelo (Senatla) always says, ‘we got dog’; they have that ‘dog’ in them. Connacht is a great story, to do what they are doing with the smallest budget. They are a team that does not go away, and Ulster experienced that, as have other teams. They have a helluva lot of mongrel in them.”

DHL Stormers’ preparation

DHL Stormers assistant coach Dawie Snyman has highlighted that the hosts are preparing for a heavyweight arm-wrestle against Connacht. The team is expecting a tough match against quality opposition. Snyman also acknowledged Connacht’s fighting spirit, noting that they fight for everything on the field.

“They are a tough team, we realised that when we played them in Galway last year. They are a quality side, well-coached and they have experienced players in the Irish setup.

“Connacht are a team we won’t take lightly. That game in the first round was tight until the red card and they still came back. They fight for everything. They fight for every ball, every ruck and you can see they’re playing for each other on the field.

“That makes them quite a threat, but we’ve got our own character and we’re a strong team.” Whatever the result, both teams will know they have been in a dog fight.

Conclusion

Both teams are preparing for a challenging match, and the outcome is likely to be a closely fought dog fight. While the DHL Stormers hold the advantage of playing on home soil, Connacht’s determined spirit and ability to punch above their weight make them a formidable opponent but bookies expect  Stormers to win by 15pts.

Scottish Rugby World Cup Training Squad Announced

Gregor Townsend has today named his extended 41-player Scotland squad ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup. The group will be led by captain Jamie Ritchie and includes flanker Rory Darge and winger Darcy Graham, both returning to the international set-up having been unavailable through injury previously.

The 41-player group will gather for an initial training camp on 29 May to begin preparations for warm-up matches in The Famous Grouse Nations Series against France, Italy and Georgia at BT Murrayfield in July and August.
