Cricket Ireland is Monitoring the Spread of the 2019 Coronavirus

Cricket Ireland is scheduled to face the hosts in a six-game series in Zimbabwe on April 2 to 12 of this year. The matches include three Twenty20 face-offs and three one-day internationals at the Queen’s Sports Club in Bulwayo.

However, there is a possibility that these matches won’t push through because of the threats that the coronavirus have worldwide. Earlier this month, Ireland’s women’s tour to Thailand was also cancelled because of this. The four-team tournament just didn’t push through.

According to Cricket Ireland, they are closely monitoring the situation. The association said in a statement, “Cricket Ireland is liaising with both Irish and British governments, as well as working closely with sporting authorities north and south, to ensure we are fully informed and confident that sending a squad to Zimbabwe will be safe for players, staff and travelling fans.”

The spread of the 2019 coronavirus is becoming a concern for many countries. The virus that is reported to have started in Wuhan, China has already affected almost 100,000 people. There are already over 3,000 deaths that are related to this virus.

The sports industry is no exception when it comes to its effects. There are now many sporting events that have been either postponed or canceled because of this. Switzerland’s government has already released an order to cancel any event that involved over 1,000 people to help slow down the spread of the virus.

Italy has canceled many football matches already and the cricket industry is on the lookout and is also monitoring how things are doing before they make any move. Cricket Ireland also said in a statement, “At present, there are no travel restrictions to Zimbabwe, but the situation is developing on an almost daily basis. Since our foremost priority is duty of care to players and support staff, we shall continue to monitor the situation, and comply with the appropriate advice.”

The International Cricket Council has also recently announced that the second series of the Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League A will be postponed. This is set to happen on March 16 in Malaysia, but it’s now likely to be held during the latter part of this year.

Sports fans would usually travel just so they can watch sports events but it’s likely that many people would rather stay indoors now. What’s likely to not be affected is the sports betting industry as people can now do this in the comfort and safety of their homes.

Cricket Fans can check the TopBookies top cricket betting sites to be able to see the best bookies where cricket bets can be placed. It’s surely a safer alternative than travel to land bookies where it is usually visited by many people.

Meanwhile, Ireland already has 26 confirmed cases of the virus since last week, when the first confirmed case was announced. All these cases are reported to be related to travel from the norther part of Italy. 19 of these cases are from the Republic while the Northern Ireland has seven confirmed cases.

For now, many sports leagues are taking precautionary measures to avoid having contact with people who are infected with the virus. It’s mostly impossible to spot someone who could be affected by the 2019 COVID because many of these people are asymptomatic.

Football and basketball players are now ordered to avoid shaking hands with fans or giving them high fives. They are also advised to avoid borrowing pens and markers from fans and carry hand sanitizers with them all time.

Since there is still no cure and no vaccine to fight this virus, these are mainly the things that the health officials are telling everybody. It’s important to always wash your hands and when washing, do this for 20 seconds to make sure that the hands are thoroughly cleaned. It’s also advised to avoid touching your face as much as possible as this can be a quick way to get infected by the virus.

People with travel history in places with COVID cases are also advised to self-quarantine for at least a week once they get back to make sure that they are clear from the virus. For now, it’s much better to avoid crowded places when there is no need to be in there.

Now, many are wondering if sporting events can just push through without spectators. While this is indeed something that could help prevent the spread, many leagues are not really up for this. It just seems insensible to play in an empty crowd. Many sporting events would rather postpone the matches rather than play with no spectators.

Soccer Myths: True or False?

Soccer is a game that is loved by billions of people all over the world. This is both a good and a bad thing.  Good in the sense that soccer will never die, bad in that people get suspicious and different myths arise.

The fact that billions love it means that each person believes what they want to do about the sport. As such, there are quite a number of soccer myths from all around the world.

Soccer Myths

Just like there are things people believe about roulette online and how to win them, there are some interesting myths that people believe about soccer too.

The Sportswear Myth

Soccer teams always have a jersey, and the colour of the jersey is up to the team and the team manager. However, it is believed that the colour of the jersey has something to do with whether your team will be successful or not in the future.

Is this true or false, we have no idea. However, studies show that teams that wear red have been more successful in the EPL as compared to other teams that wear colours other than red.

The good looks myth

A general belief in the whole world, soccer or otherwise is that if you are good looking you are most likely to be successful.  However, when it comes to soccer in Germany, it is the exact opposite. They believe that the less good looking that you are, the more successful you are going to be.

Mario Balotelli

There is a lot that people believe something about Mario Balotelli. So we will list just a few of those things. At some point it was believed that he gave £1,000 to a homeless man who was sitting outside  online horse racing. Another is that he went to a petrol station and bought everyone who was their fuel. Also, there are many who believe that he received DJing lesson from Tom Westwood.

Limerick book semi-final spot with win over Waterford

Limerick did enough to book their place in the Allianz Hurling League spot with a win over Waterford on Saturday. The Shannonsiders prevailing 1-21 to 1-17 in the end.

Limerick led this game by 0-05 to 0-04 after 20 minutes of play. Aaron Gillane’s accuracy from placed balls and Gearoid Hegarty playing superb for John Kiely’s men. Graeme Mulcahy floated a brace of points over to extend the Limerick lead and the gap was three points by 26 minutes. Limerick then got a goal. David Dempsey fielding a long range delivery on 28 minutes, before laying off the ball to the powerful Gearoid Hegarty who fired to the net. Pauric Mahony then hit three frees in response. It was 1-08 to 0-07 at half time. Jamie Barron the only Waterford player to score from a play.

Peter Hogan got on the scoreboard early in the second half. Hogan was a half time substitute brought on my Cahill. The sides continued to swap scores. Gillane, Hegarty and Mulcahy landing scores to make it 1-14 to 0-10 after 55 minutes. Calum Lyons knocked over a Waterford point, before Gillane and Paddy O’Loughlin registered scores for Limerick. Waterford then got a lifeline with 58 minutes played. Jack Fagan soloed with the ball through the heart of the Limerick defence to reduce the margin to five to set up a close finish.

However, man of the match Gearoid Hegarty landed another score to bring his personal tally to 1-03. Gillane then had a goal effort tapped over the bar by Shane O’Brien. Waterford try as they must to turn the game around, but they just couldn’t get another girl which would have set up a titanic battle. Limerick through to the semi-finals, Waterford have to settle for a quarter-final place against Kilkenny or Wexford.

Maher and Steede named club players of the year

Borris Ileigh club man Brendan Maher and Corofin star Ronan Steede have been named club players of the year in hurling and football respectively.

Brendan Maher was fully deserving of his award having led his club to the All-Ireland Club Hurling Final. However his side lost out to Ballyhale Shamrocks. Earlier this week the GAA announced the hurling team of the year. It included five players, goalkeeper James McCormack  Paddy Stapleton, Jerry Kelly, Dan McCormack and of course Maher.  Moreover, Maher, an All-Ireland winner with Tipperary in 2019 scored 0-06 in that final. He also scored 0-07 in victory over Ballygunner in the Munster decider earlier in the year.

Maher as many would have seen by now was playing with a broken hurley in the win over St Thomas’ in the semi-final. Speaking at the AIB awards night he said of this, “I had a twenty-one yard free and I remember the second I hit the free the hurley just split down the middle,”. “I remember waving and running towards the dugout, calling for a new hurl, but I knew there wasn’t going to be enough time as the ball was pucked out short”.

Meanwhile Ronan Steede scooped the football award. He was also named on the team of the year. The Corofin man was instrumental in his side run to a third successive club All-Ireland title. He scored 0-03 in the final win over Down side Kilcoo. Padraic Joyce rewarded Steede for his super performance with a Galway debut. This came in the Allianz League meeting against Meath, Steede scored 1-01 in that game. The 28 year old said he was delighted he has been given a chance at inter-county. He said, Yes, I just got a call up there. Padraic likes attacking players as midfielders, he has that style of football he wants to play,”.

Dublin probably should have had a goal on the restart. However, McKeon was denied by a smart save from Matthew Byron. People may know his dad Fergal who played in the goal for the Laois senior a couple of years ago. Alan Murphy’s effort hit the crossbar also. Coffey opened the second half scoring. The gap was down to five but the O’Moore would not get any closer to Dublin from here. Laois were trailing by 6 points with the clock going into the last five minutes. Laois were awarded a penalty by referee Patrick Maguire. However, Mark Barry’s effort was kicked wide of the post.

Dublin weren’t to be denied though with McKeon and Archer coming to the fore to pile on the scores in the final few minutes.

Taylor to fight Serrano in May

Katie Taylor will fight Amanda Serrano on May 2nd. It will be the biggest fight of the Bray Boxers professional to date.

The fight itself will be on the same card as the Dillian Whyte v Alexander Povetkin in the heavyweight division. The news was confirmed on Friday by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing on social media. In a tweet Matchroom Boxing said, “The biggest female fight of all time!! #TaylorSerrano lands on May 2nd – undisputed champ v 7 division champion – huge respect to both giving the fans what we want”.

That certainly will now guarantee Taylor a significant pay day. However, the fight will not be on free to air, meaning if you want to watch the fight you will have to pay for it through the box office. Serrano from Puerto Rico is a tough teak opponent here record is impeccable. From 40 fights she has 38 wins, 28 KO’s and 1 loss. The 31 year old currently holds the WBO and WBC Featherweight titles.

The fight will take place at the Manchester Arena. Taylor will put her 4 belts on the line also. Taylor has fought Cindy Serrano, a sister of Amanda, the Bray woman came out on top 100-90 on all three judges scorecards. Serrano has already begin to start stirring the fight. Just last month speaking to Sirius XM she said Taylor is an “average fighter”. She continued, “She’s an average woman, she’s a girl. I mean, my trainer, Jordan (Maldonado), saw it when she was in there with my sister”.

This game decides what team drops down to Division 2 for 2021. It is a big game for both sides and likely the biggest game of the year for them. In truth both sides struggled in Division 1a and 1b.

Westmeath failed to win a game in Division 1a. However they lost five games. They finished with a scoring difference of – 59. They suffered heavy losses to Galway, Tipperary and Limerick in the division. However, they did push Cork close last time out. Shane O’Brien will know home advantage counts for a lot and a big home crowd could spur them to victory here. Westmeath have good players in their ranks like Aonghus Clarke, Eoin Price and Allan Devine in their ranks. The trio will need to be at their best for the Lake County to triumph here.

Colm Bonnars Carlow side come into the game on the back of five losses in Division 1b. The Barrowsiders finished with a scoring difference of – 70. They suffered heavy losses to Wexford, Kilkenny, Clare and Dublin. They lost narrowly to Laois 0-15 to 0-14.  Carlow will need a big performance here to come away from Mullingar with the win. They have the talent to do so. Chris Nolan, Marty Kavanagh and Jack Kavanagh will be key to the Barrowsiders success here.

Ryanair Chase – Cheltenham Festival Entries 2020

France v Ireland will go ahead

Six Nations organisers have said the Six Nations meeting between France v Ireland will go ahead. It also confirmed that all other games will go ahead apart from the Italy v England (which was called off on Thursday).

In a statement released on Thursday, they said, “The decision has now been taken to postpone the three matches between Italy and England (men’s, women’s, and U20). These were set to take place over the weekend of 13/14/15 March, with the intention to reschedule them at later dates,”.

They said based on information that is available all other Six Nations matches will go ahead as scheduled. “As previously stated, Six Nations fully intends to complete all 15 games across all three championships when time allows.”

Ireland were due to take on Italy this weekend in the Six Nations at senior, U20 and women’s level this weekend but due to the outbreak of the coronavirus this was called off on February 26th.

Incidentally, England v Italy was called off on Thursday. There is little or no room in terms of where they fit this game in. In fact the BBC report that the first free Saturday would be the 27th of June, this is due to clubs playing in the English Premiership and of course the Champions Cup. England will be heading to Japan, while Italy face games against Canada the USA and Argentina.

It remains to be seen when the refixtures will be announced but I would imagine these would be announced fairly quickly.
