Cyclist Conor Murphy Wins Silver at European Youth Olympics

Conor Murphy celebrates with his silver medal after finishing second in the boys' time trial final during day two of the 2023 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival at Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport in Maribor, Slovenia. Photo by Tyler Miller/Sportsfile, provided by Olympic Federation of Ireland.

Cyclist Conor Murphy claimed Ireland’s first medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Maribor.

The Clogher rider was second in the Boy’s Time Trial, becoming the first male to win a cycling medal for Team Ireland at the EYOF.

The 16-year-old finished the 10km race in a time of 12:55.38, with only the Dutch rider, Gijs Schoonvelde, going faster. Co

Afterwards, the surprised and proud Cúchulainn CC rider spoke about his race, admitting:

“It feels amazing, I can’t really believe it to be honest. The course was pan-flat and a case of just going as hard as you could. I really wasn’t expecting it, I was hoping top 25-ish, and I just came over the line and I couldn’t believe what the man on the mic was saying.”

Coached by international racer Bryan McCrystal, Murphy normally competes on the mountain bike, and came into the event not knowing what to expect.

“Byran’s been great to me giving me advice for the Time Trial,” the silver medallist said. “I can’t thank him enough has really helped me, he even lent me his bike for the race. I think everyone will be pretty proud in Louth now. I’m in disbelief now but I think I will believe it when I get it in my hands and see it hanging on the wall at home. It’s a nice way to start the week, we will just give it a go on the mountain bike tomorrow.”

The only other cyclist to have won a medal for Team Ireland at the EYOF is Lara Gillespie, who won a silver medal in the Girl’s Time Trial in Gyor 2017.

David Gaffney and Philip O’Connor were also competing in the same race, finishing 18th and 43rd respectively.

The Girl’s Time Trial saw Killarney’s Kate Murphy finish in 27th position, ahead of Greta Lawless in 40th place.

Irish Horses to Watch at Glorious Goodwood 2023

Glorious Goodwood is one of the world’s leading flat race meetings and the festival will take place between the 1st and 5th of August 2023.

There are plenty of races to be excited about, including the King George Stakes, Nassau Stakes, Sussex Stakes, and Goodwood Cup. Before we take a closer look at some of the leading Irish contenders in 2023, we must get to know the racetrack a little better.

Goodwood Racecourse

The Goodwood Racecourse is in Chichester, West Sussex and in known as a right-handed track. However, for races over 2 miles in length, the runners will also take a left-handed turn early in the race.

The flat course provides the riders with tremendous views of the South Downs and the two main right-handed turns can be found one mile from the start line and on the final bend. The home straight may look like the easiest part of the track from the stands, but many runners have got into trouble on the straight at Goodwood, leading to some dramatic finishes.

Soul Sister

Now we come to the first of our Irish horses to watch at the 2023 Glorious Goodwood festival. Soul Sister is expected to compete in the Nassau Stakes and will be up against the favourite, Blue Rose Cen. Soul Sister arrives at Goodwood on the back of a third-place finish in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp in July.

She did well under pressure in the final stages but did not have the pace to challenge the winner. However, good wins in the Musidora Stakes and the Epsom Oaks makes Soul Sister one to watch at Goodwood this year.

Coltrane

Coltrane has enjoyed a fantastic year and has quickly become one of the leading contenders in Group 1 races. Having won the Coral Marathon at Sandown last season, Coltrane went on to win the Group 2 Doncaster Cup and finished second in the British Champions Long Distance Cup. Coltrane ran in the 2022 Goodwood Cup and finish fourth but all three of the horses who finished ahead of Coltrane will not be racing this year.

He finished second in the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup and dropping back down to 2 miles will suit Coltrane as he aims to give the crowd something to cheer about on the opening day of the festival.

Orazio

The Stewards’ Cup, which will take place on the final day of Glorious Goodwood, looks to be an open race, and includes Irish contender, Orazio. Trained by Charles Hills, the colt started the season full of promise and came out on top in the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Handicap at Newmarket, moving away from the rest of the field in the closing stages of the race.

Moving to Ascot and Orazio looked very comfortable when winning the Peroni Nastro Azzurro “Live Every Moment” Handicap, moving clear of the field to win by over two lengths. Orazio will be challenged by Saint Lawrence, another Irish horse to watch, who finished first in the Wokingham Stakes at Ascot, a race in which Oraziofinished sixth.

These are just some of the Irish horses to watch at Glorious Goodwood and there are sure to be many others who will be confident of tasing success throughout the week.

Ireland’s chances at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup?

Nine months ago, Amber Barrett rocketed a searing right-foot strike into the bottom corner of Scotland’s goal, and in doing so, secured Ireland’s qualification for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The 1-0 victory over Scotland ensured that for the first time in over 20 years for both the men’s and women’s teams, Ireland will have a representative at a World Cup. Now, as the tournament approaches, we look at what chances the girls in green have ahead of their first match.

What the betting markets are saying about Ireland at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

For context, let’s take a look at the betting markets to see how the bookies are rating Ireland’s chances at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The numbers from most major bookmakers paint a stark reality for Ireland—they are heavy underdogs in Australia. Favourites USA pays 9/4 (3.25) to win, closely followed by England on 7/2 (4.50) and Spain on 11/2 (6.50). Ireland, however, is well behind at 200/1 (201.00). While they may not have the longest odds—these belong to the Philippines, who pay an incredible 3000/1 (3001.00) to win the tournament, Ireland is rated a humble 16th favourite to win the tournament.

While various special offers and promotions will no doubt be offered by bookies on popular Ireland to do well, the girls in green will need more than that if they’re to have success at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Breaking down Ireland’s Best XI

Looking at the options for Ireland heading into this tournament, they may not have the big names of other nations but still have plenty of depth to choose from. Here’s how we see their starting XI shaping up for the opening game of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup:

1.       Courtney Brosnan – Goalkeeper

2.       Louise Quinn – Centre defender

3.       Diane Caldwell – Left defender

4.       Aoife Mannion – Right defender

5.       Megan Campbell – Left midfielder

6.       Sinead Farrelly – Right midfielder

7.       Denise Sullivan – Centre midfielder

8.       Lily Aff – Centre midfielder

9.       Katie McCabe – Left wing

10.   Aine O’Gorman – Right win

11.   Kyra Carusa – Centre striker

While there’s been plenty of chopping and changing to the starting lineup in Ireland’s squad, we say this is the most settled version of the XI that will be fielded in Australia. Expect a 5-4-1 formation used on defense, switching to 3-4-2-1 on attack.

Keys to victory for Ireland at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Irish teams thrive in the underdog position, and there’s certainly how the women’s team will need to play at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Vera Pauw will need to employ some astute tactics if her side is to overcome the deficit in talent and experience on the pitch. One approach that will be critical is their adaptability when it comes to possession. Against weaker sides, Ireland will need to play direct and hold onto the ball. However, when playing more talented teams, Ireland’s ability to take their chances and go for broke will be pivotal.

As they’ve shown over their path to the World Cup, Ireland will be willing to give up big swings in possession if it means having success on the scoreboard.

Savethelastdance wins Juddmonte Irish Oaks at The Curragh

Savethelastdance and Ryan Moore win Juddmonte Irish Oaks at The Curragh. Credit: Breandán Ó hUallacháin.

Savethelastdance and Ryan Moore won the Juddmonte Irish Oaks at The Curragh this afternoon.

The victory of the Ballydoyle-handled filly gave her trainer Aidan O’Brien a record seventh success in the fillies’ classic over a mile and a half.

Winner of the Cheshire Oaks in May and runner-up in the Epsom Oaks last month, the daughter of Galileo battled hard with the English challenger Bluestocking, representing the sponsors, at the business end of the race.

With the Ralph Beckett-trained Colin Keane-ridden Bluestocking moving on in the latter stages of the contest, and looking as though she was set for victory, Savethelastdance fought bravely for Ryan Moore and came back to claim the win.

Another Ballydoyle runner, the pacesetting Library (80/1) took third place.

The win of Savethelastdance was the middle part of a Curragh treble for O’Brien, Moore and the Coolmore partners.

The impressive newcomer Henry Longfellow set the ball rolling for the Ballydoyle team when claim the opening maiden.

A juvenile son of Dubawi out of the multiple Group 1 winner Minding, previously trained by O’Brien, the 5/4 favourite led home a 1-2-3 for O’Brien with Mythology (13/8) second and Master of the Hunt (13/2) in third.

The Group 2 Comer Group International Curragh Cup was won by Emily Dickinson (6/4f) to complete the treble. The four-year-old daughter of Dubawi had finished fourth in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last month, but on softer ground today, which is more to her liking, she ran out an impressive three length winner over Paddy Twomey’s Rosscarbery (13/8) and Donnacha O’Brien’s Amusement in third.

Druids Is Challenging The Golf Wear Industry Norms With Its Fair Pricing Policy

The origins of golf go back to the 15th century when only the wealthiest Scottish men could afford to enjoy the sport.

The aristocratic community had vast lands, which they transformed into private golf courses to spend leisure time. The sport slowly grew popular and spread from Scotland to the wealthy communities of the United Kingdom, America, and Europe.

Over the centuries, golf evolved and expanded but maintained its reputation. To this day, the sport is considered a status symbol and is played by the richest men on the planet. Being a luxury sport, everything associated with golf comes at a hefty price. Hiring a good coach to learn the game, golf course memberships, premium quality golf equipment, and apparel- all are too expensive for normal salaried individuals to afford.

The golf industry is making massive profits from the sport’s reputation, overlooking the importance of inclusivity and leaving passionate individuals with no choice but to either give up their dreams of becoming professional golfers or breaking the bank to play the sport.

In the golf wear industry Golf clothing is really important that is designed for comfort and flexibility during play. It typically includes polo shirts, slacks or shorts, and specialized shoes to enhance performance and maintain a stylish appearance.

In these times, when playing a golf round can cost anywhere from £100 to £200, a young Irish & Scottish brand named Druids is working hard to make the sport more inclusive with its affordable golf apparel and accessories. Founded in 2014, Druids is slowly climbing the ladder of success and only recently got our attention.

To learn more about Druids, we browsed its official website and were shocked to see the technology and designs offered by the brand at such low prices. A look at its reviews also came as a surprise, considering the brand enjoys the rating of 4.2 stars on TrustPilot. In an interview the brand’s creative director and co-partner, Tim Ferris, says: “Druids was founded on the principle of giving golfers top quality products at affordable prices. We want to play our role in growing the game and making it more accessible. We provide products that will help improve a golfer’s performance and enhance their enjoyment of the game, all whilst not breaking the bank.”

Tim also mentioned that they have a strategy that helps them keep their quality high and prices low. The key aspects of that strategy were:
-No big endorsement deals.
-Direct to consumer sales method.
-A tight knit team focusing on the brand’s core principle.

Are these strategies really practical and helpful in keeping the prices of golf apparel low? That we will talk about later, but first, let’s discuss the quality of golf wear offered by Druids.

Is the quality of Druids golf wear up to par?

Druids claims to manufacture its golf apparel with premium quality cotton and synthetic fabrics. Every article, from men’s golf base layers to trousers, is equipped with edge-cutting features like four-way stretch, Quick Drying technology, anti-microbial finish, and shower-repelling exterior.

To figure out the truth, we ordered a golf outfit from Druids to test it out on greens. The delivery was prompt, and the brand passed its first test as all the clothes looked exactly like they did on the website. The shirt and trousers felt soft to touch and fabric seemed high quality.

To confirm the quality, we wore Druids golf apparel consisting of a printed golf polo shirt, golf Joggers, and golf belt and played an 18-hole round. The polo shirt felt soft against the skin and allowed unrestricted movement to swing the club. As mentioned in the product’s description, the polo rapidly wicked sweat and ensured a pleasant experience throughout. The trousers offered a comfortable fit and the four way stretch technology allowed easy bending and stretch of the limbs.

Much to our surprise, Druids passed our quality test and proved that it is possible to find good golf wear at an affordable price.

How is Druids golf apparel so affordable?

Now that we know Druids is offering superior quality golf apparel at incredibly low rates. The next question is how it manages to maintain such competitive prices without compromising on quality. As confirmed by the brand’s creative director, there are several factors that contribute to Druids ability to keep prices low:

Druids operates a direct-to-consumer business model

In an interview, Tim revealed that Druids operates on a direct-to-consumer business model to ensure affordability. The traditional retail channels can sell the products faster, but since Druids primary focus is to make golf apparel accessible, it is only making sales through its online website. This strategy helps the brand save costs associated with intermediaries and deliver superior quality at a low price.

Druids says NO to big endorsement deals

Most big brands spend billions of dollars advertising their products through endorsement deals. This marketing strategy surely helps generate more sales but isn’t customer focused. Druids, on the other hand, avoids endorsing celebrities and famous golfers- a strategy which in our opinion is truly worth appreciation.

The brand’s creative director, Tim Ferris, says: “Wherever we can pass savings onto golfers, we will. One key aspect of how we are able to do that is that we don’t have a raft of big-money endorsement deals. Instead, we invest in up-and-coming talent wherever possible and have partnered with a select few Scottish pros.”

Needless to say, this method helps the discount golf store keep the prices of its apparel within an average salaried individual’s budget and also help it support the upcoming talent.

Druids tight-knit team focuses on its core principle

A vision can not become reality without a loyal team and this Irish brand’s success is proof of that.
To keep the prices low and quality high, Druids has hired a team of individuals who work hard every day to make their founder’s dream a reality. Tim Ferris, in an interview, said, “We have a very tight-knit team at Druids who is committed to sticking to our core principles. It’s at the heart of everything we do.” A small team directed by a strong leader contributes unique skills and expertise, working together to achieve a common goal of breaking the golf wear industry’s norms.

Last Word:

After analysing Druids apparel, low pricing policy, and financial strategy, we have come to the conclusion that the brand is gaining popularity for all the right reasons. The young Irish brand, with its hard working team and strong vision, is on the right track and will soon beat the big names to rise to the top.

Starting teams for Kilkenny v Limerick

“Limerick and Kilkenny Unveil Unchanged Teams for All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final at Croke Park

In preparation for this Sunday’s highly anticipated All-Ireland senior hurling championship final at Croke Park, both Limerick and Kilkenny have revealed their line-ups. Notably, both teams have retained the same starting line-up that led them to victory in the semi-finals.

Defending champions Limerick, however, will be without their injured captain, Declan Hannon, as he misses the showdown against Derek Lyng’s team. In his absence, Cian Lynch will lead the Shannonsiders from centre-field. Additionally, Aidan O’Connor has been selected to join the bench, taking Richie English’s place.

Meanwhile, Kilkenny’s David Blanchfield has successfully recovered from his injury sustained during the previous match against Clare and is set to start at right half-back. TJ Reid will once again lead the Leinster champions’ attack from the full-forward position, while Conor Fogarty and Adrian Mullen will hold the center-field. Martin Keoghan will be stationed on ‘the 40’.

Excitement for the final match is growing, with throw-in scheduled for 3.30 pm at Croke Park. Hurling fans can’t wait to witness these two formidable teams battle it out for the prestigious All-Ireland title.”
