Before Wales’ Neil Taylor decided to tackle Seamus Coleman during a World Cup qualifier in March of 2017, the Irish right-back was tipped to join one of the Premier League’s top six clubs.

A second later and that dream was all but over once Taylor had recklessly clattered into Coleman, leaving him with a double leg break and a spell of ten months on the sideline. Taylor meanwhile only had to contend with a mere two-game ban before carrying on with his career. 

It should be said that there are varying degrees in which a sportsman can break their leg. Indeed, England rugby prop Joe Marler once recounted a humorous tale about being diagnosed with a broken leg only a week after it happened and still went on to compete in a fixture with what was supposedly a significant fracture. Some careers, as you can see, don’t come to a standstill when this happens and in Marler’s case, he was hardly affected. Even today, there is very little sign of any long-term side effects, as the latest rugby odds from Betfair will attest to with Marler’s team the Harlequins, whom he plays a talismanic role for, at just 9/2 to win the Gallagher Premiership this season. 

Essentially, life went on for Marler as it does for others who also sustain similar fractures.

Coleman, however, won’t ever have the luxury of telling a humorous anecdote to the Independent about his leg break given that it threatened to end his career right then and there. Additionally, there was no mistaking what had just happened as the right-back clutched his leg on the turf of the Aviva Stadium. Somewhere in the background, the referee waved a red card in Taylor’s face as the Irish team doctors sprinted onto the pitch.

It is during moments like these when injury of this nature strikes that nothing is ever guaranteed as far as the future goes.

Of course, comebacks are not impossible but there is still a sense of concern as few can predict what type of career will be had after the hard yards of rehabilitation are put in. As far as Coleman goes, it won’t come as a surprise given how much of a competitor he is, to hear that he was always convinced that he would make a return and play in the Premier League again.

Five years on from that 0-0 draw in Dublin and Coleman has made a phenomenal achievement in itself. Yes, the conversation around Everton’s right-back can, at times, centre on how much he lost in terms of not securing a move to a bigger club owing to his injury, but it’s easy to forget just how much much is required of a player to compete in England’s top-flight.

The inescapable reality is that it is an unforgiving and ruthless league that will expose any professional who can’t cut it. This is where Coleman deserves huge credit having returned to the Toffees’ first team in 2018 whilst astonishingly, going on to receive the captain’s armband in 2019 following Phil Jagielka’s departure from Goodison Park. 

With this impressive trajectory in mind following Coleman’s double leg break in 2017, one can only conclude that the 33-year-old hasn’t given this injury even the slightest chance of affecting his career.

Remarkably, the Irish international has racked up an impressive 383 caps for Everton as of May 2022 and will go down as one of their all-time greats when he eventually leaves the club.

The pitch for the modern game is between 130m and 145m long, with a width of 80m to 90m. it is played for 70 minutes and is divided into two halves of 35 minutes. The goalposts have a minimum height of 7m with a width of 6.5m and a crossbar that’s set at 2.5m. The goal is placed at the center of the goal line at both field ends. Players are given shirt numbers 1-15 in line with their position on the field: a goalie, 3 fullbacks, 3 halfbacks, 2 midfielders, 3 half forwards, and 3 full forwards. 1. Frank Lampard

After taking over Chelsea, Abramovich spent a lot on the club. They bought new players every year. The two veterans who stayed in the club for many years were Terry and Lampard. 

Frank made a great contribution to the club as a midfielder. He scored goals, showed great technique, and made good passes at long and short distances. There is a genuine fear among Leeds United’s staff and fanbase that club stalwart Stuart Dallas may have played his last game in the Premier League for the Whites after suffering a career-threatening injury against Manchester City. In many ways, Dallas was incredibly unlucky to come away from a challenge with Jack Grealish with a femoral fracture given that these types of breaks to the femur only really occur when high-impact trauma is involved. Put another way, it’s exceptionally rare for footballers to suffer this particular type of break but when they do, it goes without saying that very little is guaranteed in terms of a return to playing anytime soon. 

Indeed, with Leeds United’s top-flight future hanging in the balance as the latest Premier League relegation odds 21/22 put Jesse Marsch’s men at just 4/5 to go down, it becomes easier to imagine a scenario where Dallas has played his final game in the world’s most competitive league.

Of course, Dallas has a contract with Leeds that runs until the summer of 2024 which means that he will be on the club’s books for at least another 24 months. There is, however, a difference between being contracted and being in a position to contribute towards winning football matches on the field of play. As things stand, no one can say with any certainty that when Dallas returns, he will be at the same level he was before his tangle with Grealish. 

With that being said, there was an indication that the Northern Irishman’s emergency surgery was a success following the defeat to City after Marsch backed Dallas to make a full recovery and come back stronger than ever. It was undoubtedly an encouraging update from the new Elland Road boss but it’s worth saying that the Leeds supporters have become wary of how sincere the American really is after seemingly misreading the mood around the city since his arrival. In particular, Marsch conducted a string of ill-advised interviews about how bright the future is despite a potential relegation drawing nearer. Naturally, this was met with annoyance by the Leeds fans as they felt like the manager should be present in the here and now in order to prevent this potentially devastating development.

Crucially, there’s no suggestion that Marsch is an unlikeable guy but rather that he tends to see the world through heavily rose-coloured glasses which as briefly touched on, has the ability to undermine what he says. With regards to Dallas, everyone hopes that the 48-year-old is right about him returning to an even better version of himself but historically, the rehabilitation time of thisinjury could take as long as 18 months if ligament damage was also sustained.

This is obviously the worst-case scenario with any timeline ultimately depending on how well Dallas’ body takes to the arduous journey ahead. One last point to consider is that the versatile player has just turned 31 which is significant when weighing up if he will ever play in the Premier League again given that he could be closer to 33 when the time comes. 

The silver lining is that Dallas’ Leeds’ career may not be over if the club ends up back in the Championship but if the Whites get out of jail and continue to consolidate their Premier League status, it becomes harder to see a way back for a man who has been a talismanic figure during their recent resurgence.
